First, please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong section. It seemed most appropriate.
Second, I take no credit for anything here except for writing the .bat file here used to do the work, as well as assembling the files as per the original post.
All credit goes to djmwj and his article found here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/8722-lenovo-ideapad-k1-rooting-guide-messy/
As the title states, it was very messy. The OP figured out how to make it go, but it was a bit fuzzy to follow. So, I thought I'd help folks out a bit and clean things up.
So, I took the instructions presented in the OP, and condensed them into one download with one .bat that does everything from start to finish, minus installing the respective drivers for ADB and NVFlash. However, the drivers are included in the download.
Instructions:
1. Extract K1Root.rar to the directory of your choosing.
2. Connect your tablet to your PC with the USB cable.
3. With your tablet off, press POWER+VOL_UP+VOL_DOWN until the screen turns on, but displays only black.
4. Windows should detect the device, but not install drivers.
5. Go into device manager, select the APX device, choose update drivers, and install the drivers from the aptly named NVFlash_Drivers folder.
6. Open up the NVFLASH_HOME folder and run the file K1Flash.bat
7. Make your desired choices when prompted, and enjoy.
Notes (PLEASE READ BEFORE USING):
THERE MAY BE BUGS! I used it on my own stuff before releasing, and all of the essential components work as they should, however, there may possibly be a minor hiccup somewhere in the script. This should not damage anything. If you have doubts, you're welcome to examine the .bat and check it for yourself.
Please be gentle. I am not a full-time developer. I just wrote this to help make the process simpler for people.
The OP suggests you download and read the partition table, and then name the backup files based on that. This script names the backup files based on the flash.cfg script referenced in the OP, which is what controls the flashes used anyway. So, there shouldn't be any irregularities, however, I can't speak for every device on the planet.
This does NOT use the latest OTA updates. The rooted files being flashed are the default ones from the original download. You can easily adapt this to any files generated from the latest OTA files by simply dropping them in the NVFLASH_HOME file.
To install the SU properly, you have to install ADB drivers midway through the script. There's probably a way around this, but I didn't find it to be too inconvenient.
The ADB drivers are also located in the NVFLASH_HOME folder. Just do like you did when installing drivers in step #5, but instead point to NVFLASH_HOME.
Um...um...
That should be it. Obviously, use at your own risk. Let me know if there are problems with the script, and I will fix them.
Oh, and party on, Wayne.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AG10XE25
EDIT:
Attached is an updated .bat file which fixes a few errors in the original script, plus adds more userability. Just extract to the NVFLASH_HOME folder and run.

You may want to change the title to Ideapad K1, I don't know if this will work for the Thinkpad tablet.
Thanks for this, I just picked up this tablet ($250 at staples) and was worrying about having to tackle linux and "compiling" just to be able to get hulu.com working. You're a lifesaver.

Wow. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the key used is just for the Ideapad. Thanks for pointing that out. My dumb a$$ must've blanked out and just used the group name when posting.
And just to be fair, the original poster does include everything needed to do stuff in windows as well - it's just very hard to discern from the post.
question
Is anyone working on a custom ROM for this tablet? I am hopeing that there will be at least a few custom roms available at some point in the near future.

We need to be able to root and unlock the bootloader first.
Does the root method work on the 121211 update?
Or is there a way to flash back to the older firmware?
the OTA update 12 12 11.... seems to be update.zip style with no .img files inside. just loose files like normal rom updates. doesnt seeem like you can drop the files in as suggested. or i have the wrong OTA....
oh and is this for LINUX as the OP or work in windows too??
Hi, I was wondering, is this procedure works for the Lenovo ThinkPad 1838-25U? I'm thinking to buy it to give a test ride, i sold my Transformer 101 to buy the Prime but it seems like Asus is taking vacations on the delivery shipments. Is this a good tablet? or is better to wait for another version?
READ THE POST
IDEApad not THINKpad. no it wont work.
First of all- thank you so much for creating this script! I have been putting off rooting this device due to the "messy" nature of the original post.
I was hoping you could help me troubleshoot, I have tried both the new K1 root application and the original .bat file. I know the drivers are working because the script makes it as far as creating and formatting partitions and successfully pushes the bootlooder.bin but then:
bootloader.bin sent successfully
file not found: recovery.img
failed executing command 2147483647 NvError 0x4
command failure: create failed
I've tried everything I can think of... any ideas?
Thanks again.
I found problem.
after root done follow step. I cannot factory reset and update any ota.

Yes you have to roll-back to 04 stock and then apply the OTA's

I recently got this device and looking for a way to root this device without having to roll back to the factory default rom and then having to update again using OTA.
Question, am I in luck, is that at all possible or do I have to really rollback and reinstall everything again?
Thanks!

Anyone have the root? Megaupload is down forever.
Okay. I am stuck and frustrated like crazy. I have a touchpad that i am trying to root. I have tried the universal novacom installer and it fails. I have tried web os doctor but that fails as well. I put the tablet in editing mode, then hold the volume up button while pluggin in the tablet to my computer and that puts it into usb update mode or something like that. I start the webos doctor and it gets to 4% and the tablet shows the HP loga and all of a sudden the computer looses connection with the tablet so it stops. What do i do? I really want to get this going but am hitting walls left and right. I have ene tried it on my old laptop that is running Windows XP. I can either use my XP laptop or my Windows 7 computer so anyone please gimme some answers. I probably left out some info so please ask. If anyone wants to call me thats fine by me. Thanks
Kenneth

Have you put the touchpad in developer mode? To do this, go to the just type line on the webos home screen and type "webos20090606" without the quotes. this will allow you to continue. If you would like me to assist you in depth, I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Additional help can also be found at webosnation.com in their forums

If it isnt one thing it is another it seems with this blasted tablet. Anyone able to hlep with this new issue please. Thanks

There is a space after < ie // < ACMEInstaller2
Have you installed novacom correctly as the novacom.exe file should in the Palm, Inc folder when you open it along with along with a folder called novacomd and terminal and that is where you should put ACMEInstaller2 and for safety's sake ACMEUnistaller .
Hope that helps.

That's not supposed to happen with that guide (I've used it and it works perfectly), so you are not doing something on it or you are doing something incorrectly. So. One more time. Exactly. Step by step. What have you done?
Quite honestly, if you still don't answer this question, I give up.

ok these are the steps i have done.
1) Start by downloading Java from the link below or in the description:
http://java.com/en/download/
2) Next open the Novacom files you downloaded in videos description. Run the UniversalNovacomInstaller-1.3 installer.
-Once the installation has completed navigate to the install directory on your PC. The Default path will be C:/Program Files/ Palm, Inc. Once there Paste the files located in the “Add to Palm, Inc folder” here.
3) Choose One of the following versions of CyanogenMod. Download your chosen package and extract it to your PC.
Next attach your HP TouchPad to your PC with the USB cable and place it into USB mode.
Transfer the extracted cminstall folder onto the Root Directory of your HP TouchPad; the location that opens when you attach the USB to the PC/Mac.
Once complete disconnect the TouchPad from the USB cable.
1) CyanogenMod 10 Jelly Bean (CM10) Preview cminstall package:
http://d-h.st/er3 Note! This one folder now contains all 4 needed files!
2) CyanogenMod 9 Ice Cream Sandwich (CM9) cminstall package:
http://d-h.st/rda
3) CyanogenMod 7 Gingerbread (CM7) cminstall package:
http://www.2shared.com/file/raSLI1my/CM7_cminstall.html
4) Installation:
-Once the cminstall files are on The TouchPad and you have disconnected the USB cable, it’s time to reboot into USB mode.
-Reboot the device by going into Settings/Device Info/ and select “Reset options” choose restart. As soon as the screen goes dark hold down the volume up button until you enter USB mode. Note* the large USB symbol that should be on the screen. If you miss it just reboot again and hold down Volume up button right away.
On your PC
Open a command prompt by going to the start button and typing CMD into the search window (enter)
-Next either type or copy and paste the following in to the command prompt (without the part in brackets)
cd\ (enter)
cd program files (enter)
cd palm, inc (enter)
(only type One of the Following lines below based on the Version of CyanogenMod you are installing.)
Note*The ACMEInstaller3 should be used to install all versions of CyanogenMod.
novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2 (installCM9 or CM7)
novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller3 (installCM10)
novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEUninstaller (uninstall CyanogenMod)

You just copied and pasted that, and you didn't even bother to crop out the CM versions or ACMEInstaller directions that you didn't use...
I give up. Good luck.
EDIT: unless you used all 3 ACME commands?! In which case you installed whichever ROM you downloaded twice (once with ACMEInstaller2, then once with ACMEInstaller3) and then uninstalled it (with ACMEUninstaller).
Hi All,
I'm trying to get Ubuntu installed on my Touchpad... with lots of problems... (anyway, for now most are fixed...)
However, does anyone have a working link for TouchPadBuntuRootfs.tar.gz version: 12.04 LTS edition...??
- all links I found so far are dead!!
Ubuntu 12.10 Final = Screen Corruption, graphics messed up.
Ubuntu 13.04 Final = Does not install, and need to get rid of E17 and restore normal desktop
Ubuntu 12.04 = Cannot find this addition anyone, and Ive been trying...
Many thanks, Lister
I'm downloading mine from here.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4WUjKii92l2bDRlQ0NTbTZBemM/preview?pli=1 but haven't tried it in the process of installing it.
Took me awhile I had android on my tp so I ran acme uninstaller to do a fresh start because for some reason my WiFi is not working on android.
When I did that it messed up my whole TP then I had to follow directions to factory reset it took me about an hour so now I'm downloading the files to try to run Ubuntu
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Hi Hovax615,
Thanks for the link, but I am after the specific 12.04 LTS edition of that file...
As I have tried 12.10 but that appears to have limited driver support, and both the graphics display drivers are messed up, plus it wont let me join WiFi... Says I do not have permission, even though I'm an Admin user...
And 13.04 version does not install via the method I mentioned in the other post. It says it's installed, but ends up in a Boot-Loop (only in Ubuntu, all other OS's are fine...).
So if anyone has a link to the 12.04 / LTS Edition that would be most welcomed, as all links to that file seem to be dead at the moment...??
Yeah, restoring a Touchpad can be scary times... My first go at that, and I thought my Tablet had proper died... as even WebOS Doctor didnt want to know it... But thankfully, its alive and well... And now I know how to fix that again easily, its not so scary now... lol
Many thanks, Lister

Yeah I got it to run pretty easily via smackme2. From clean install all you have to do is make a folder “sminstall" put the files in it should be
UImage,
the kexec which on Ubuntu 13.04 it comes with it already.
Moboot
You have to have the smackme2 in the folder that you have acmeinstaller in when you loaded android. I have windows so mine would be in
Program files/palm, in
Okay so let me run it down for you.
Download the files you need it should be 4 files total depending if your going to run the 12.04 which should be 4
UIMAGE SMACKME2
KEXEC.TAR(OR WHATEVER IT IS)
MOBOOT
UBUNTU
MAKE “SMINSTALL" FOLDER IN TOUCHPAD COPY KEXEC.TAR, MOBOOT, UBUNTU TO SMINSTALL FOLDER.
THAN YOU WANT TO PUT THE UIMAGE SMACKME2 IN THE PALM, INC FOLDER.
NOW TO GET THE PALM, INC FOLDER YOU'LL HAVE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE NOVACOM DRIVER. WHICH I ASSUME YOU ALREADY DO.
UNMOUNT YOUR TP RESTART IT AND PUT IT INTO RECOVER (WHEN RESTARTED HOLD UP VOLUME)
NEXT YOU WANT TO OPEN UP “FIND" OR “SEARCH" ON YOUR LAPTOP OR COMPUTER AND OPEN EITHER CMD OR COMMAND PROMPT.
NEXT AS FOLLOWS FOR COMMAND PROMPT.
CD /PROGRAM FILES/PALM, INC
novacom boot mem:// < uImage.SmackMe2
You can copy and paste that last one.
After that it should show the two penguins and start extracting.
It'll reboot the boot into kexec then toggle with volume button to Ubuntu and to select it press/hold the power button at the top.
I'm going to try to find Ubuntu 12.04 for you but its 1am here in California and I'm about to go to bed.

Can the Touchpad Toolbox be updated to so that it will accept GAPPS named pa_gapps-*4.4.4-*.zip instead of pa_gapps-*-4.4.2-*.zip?
Either that or remove or allow to skip the requirement that GAPPS zip must be present to do the "Install Android" selection. I eventually worked around it rejecting by renaming the 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 but it will probably frusturate novice users.

Yes the Touchstone charging dock works on android...
TP Toolbox failed; I'm OS-less; please help
I'm on a Mac.
I can't figure out how to make tptoolbox work on the Mac.
I went to a frustrated friend with a PC (Windows) who did not allow me enough time to complete my task.
My Touchpad is now OS-less, as in no OS; no WebOS, no Android.
I successfully did a full data wipe, twice. Thus no OS.
I couldn't get past the next step, install Android, on TPToolbox.
I got stimied after trying to copy the three files to the ttinstall folder. It said a proper recovery file was not found.
I followed the steps above to a T. I copied and pasted the three files from the windows batch to the ttinstall.
I realize in those three files there were no gapps, no recovery, no kitkat files.
So I hope I copied the right three.
Anyway, my frustrated impatient friend kicked me out, so I have no access to a PC anymore (just my old faithful Mac); I have a TP without an operating system on it; and I have no idea how to proceed (as I don't know which three files I'm supposed to copy and paste as it seems the ones I did copy and paste weren't the ones and there's no Gapps, no Recovery and no Android KitKat installs anywhere (I thought that would be within the TP Toolbox programme itself.)
Like I said, I clicked on the correct links, I went with JCSullins first link vs. the other two.
So somebody, anybody, write me back if they know either how I can proceed, or if I can just send you my TP and you can do a big favour for a small nobody.
Thanks everybody.
If not, anyone wanna buy a TP with no OS?
I still need help. HELP!

Have you tried to install it using jcsullins recommendation that you use the Linux way with Mac?
Kit Kat working
OK, like the chap above, I moved the wrong three files into the ttinstall folder. I figured that out. It's the way the thread was written, easy to get confused as they have links right below and say it's those, when in fact it is not (a gapps, recovery and rom need to be moved in there, not the data version of android as that link downloads). Anyway, I sorted it out. Just putting closure on that. Thanks JCSullins! Now we need a Mac version so I need not borrow a friends PC laptop.

Have you tried running the script in terminal as jcsullins suggested?
C) Run the script provided with TPToolbox
Extract the contents of the TPToolbox zip file from above.
Navigate to the tptoolbox_v40 directory that was extracted from the zip.
On Windows, run the batch file named tptb_v40_win.bat
On Linux, run the script named tptb_v40_nix.sh
On Mac, try what I said for Linux and let me know what happens.

Hi Shumash, Thank you for writing and being interactive. Yes I did do as suggested and tried running the .sh (linux) file on my Mac. The file opened with TextWrangler and read:
#!/bin/sh

I did a quick search online and found that Macs don't handle the .sh command, rather the command is, believe it or not, .command.
More that that I'm a novice. So I can't say.
And that's when I went to borrow a friend's PC whereupon I double clicked the .win file, extracted it, then ran it in the ensuing window no problem.
--------------------
Now I'm glad someone is reading this thread. I have a question for you (or anyone). Now that I've TP Toolbox'd my HP Touchpad (and I did not select the option to install WebOS on it), how do I transfer files from my Mac (preferred method) to the HP Touchpad now?
I put it in recovery mode (the big USB sign) but it didn't show up on my Mac desktop. It was unrecognized in the Finder too.
So I went back to my friend on hands and knees and am now using TP Toolbox to put an updated file into the ttinstall folder. Is TP Toolbox now the only way to get files on and off my Touchpad? Say it ain't so (and walk me through the process if it ain't so).
There must be an easier way. What am I to do? Please help. Thanks.

From a search on Google (I don't have a Mac):
First in terminal make the script executable by typing:
chmod a+x (yourscriptname)
Then in finder right-click your file and select "Open with" and then "Other...".
Here you select the application you want the file to execute into, in this case it would be Terminal. To be able to select terminal you need to switch from "Recommended Applications" to "All Applications".
NOTE that unless you don't want to associate all files with this extension to be run in terminal you should not have "Always Open With" checked.
After clicking OK you should be able to execute the script by simply double-clicking it.

Again, what is my scriptname?
3. Is this related to quetion 1? Does yor response suggest all files must niw be xferred using tptoolbox (in the method you described) if im using a mac and that there is no other way to accomlish that task?

TP Toolbox on a Mac
This system will not allow me to post my questions. It claims I have a URL in my message (which I do not) and won't allow me to post.
Is there another way to contact you?
Another email? Forum? Etc.?
I saved my questions as I can not submit them here.
There's a problem with the XDA forum.

it was the fourth result, entitled: "How to run a unix shell script from the Mac Finder"
I followed those instructions.
Terminal opened (launched from the Finder window using their noted technique) and here is what was displayed in Terminal: (please note: I exchanged my computer name from it's real name to ABC and XYZ (for this thread; not my real computer name).

I do see the .bin file in the same folder, the TPToolbox folder, as tptb_v40_nix.sh (which, by the way, I duplicated and changed the extension from .sh to .command, prior to searching in Finder as outlined in above links' description).
So I don't know what to do.
I know a lot of things you likely do not know; but you clearly know more about computers than I. Please be patient and explain succinctly.
I tried your method, first replied from , with and without brackets, that didn't help.

Regarding Android File Transfer, and I thank the contributor below for chiming in with that advice, I've used that, but it only works sometimes. It is not reliable; and doesn't see ALL the files (as a WebOS USB connection to my Mac used to).
Is there some way to put the HP Touchpad into USB mode and connect it to my Mac (like I used to before on the HP WebOS side (when I had an HP WebOS side)? This may be argument enough to keep the WebOS side. (I can put it in USB mode on Android, but the Mac does not recognize the HP Touchpad at all doing it that way).
---------------------------------------------------------------
Another unrelated question: What ever happened to PreWare? I can't find it anywhere. I installed Jason Robitaille's WebOS QuickInstall 4.5.0 and ran it ok. But when one clicks on the globe, there's no Preware. When one clicks on the Search field , there are zero results (except themes). No Applications, Kernels, Patches, etc.. Nothing. So what ever happened to Preware?
Not having been able to find that, and with Palm no longer supporting WebOS at all after Jan 15, 2015, was the nail in the coffin for WebOS for me. If I can't find Preware and all the apps and tweaks that come along with it, the only reason I can see keeping any WebOS on this tablet at all is to be able to put it in to WebOS USB mode and easily connect it to my Mac.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Lastly, I'm running JCSullins build titled/dated: cm-11-20141002-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
How do I take a screenshot with this ROM? It used to be Power button and lower volume button, but that screenshot option is no longer available in this JCSullins build, nor in the previous build: cm-11-20140625-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
Any ideas how to take a screenshot?

My guess is that executing the shell script by double-clicking starts it in the wrong directory. Open a terminal in the directory where you have the Toolbox files and execute it from the command line there.
