So a guy from work found an iPad the other day and when he tried to use it apparently it was tracked and now he's being charged with theft. Can the Kindle Fire be tracked the same way? I found one and I'm just wondering if I should even try rooting it or connecting it to the internet. I didn't steal it, there's just no way for me to get it back to the owner seeing as IDK who that is. No point in wasting a perfectly good device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You should be fine. iOS has that tracking app and combined with Cloud, allows you to track the device through Internet. Kindle devices have no such app, although 3rd-party apps from the Play Store can also do this. As long as you've got no such app installed, it's safe.

Alright so I did a factory reset on the device, but it still wont let me register it. Am I going to have to root it in order to "unlock" it or is there another way?
You don't need to register. It only allows you to connect to Amazon services. You can import your own media and still use it just fine. Or root and install CM10.1, then you don't need Amazon at all.
As I know, Amazon can make it "disabled", so you cannot use it if the owner reported it as lost.
Only the way you can use it is flash 2nd bootloader and TWRP, then flash CM10.1.

I bought the Nook Color while visiting Boston few weeks ago and activated it in some random Apple store (free wifi!)
Now I'm wondering, if I ever need to activate it again while not in the US, are there any workarounds? or can it be activated from anywhere?
I activated mine from Hong Kong, no issues. afaik you don't have to be in the USA to activate it, the only thing about the NC is that you have to be in the States to buy books from B&N (and that is only IP-wise too) and go on Pandora.

Ok good to know
One more question, when I load my own epubs to the nook, they show up in all the right places except for the home screen, there are only the b&n books, any way to get my own epubs there?
Activated in Spain with no problems. The only issue is you can't buy anything out of USA.
Yeah it works. I still hope someone here finds a way to circumvent the activation / registration process. Nobody knows how much the nook is phoning home to B&N.
Also, some versions of the classic nook firmware forced registration like the nc, and B&N filtered non US IP addressss...
Their TOS allow them to disable your device by deactivating your account. So if our NOOKs for instance send back lists of installed apps, B&N would know that we rooted (went against their TOS) and could deregister our device ... yeah, all this might not be a big deal since accounts can be easily created again, but that again might change.
that's a great news, I order my NC today, but I live in france.
Is there a way to root before registering?
Yeah, I believe for our rooting method it doesn't matter when we do it.
Now, even if you are rooted you'd have to know which files to change so that the registration Wizard doesn't come up. Maybe you could just kill the process of the wizard via adb, but you might have to do this at every boot and maybe the wizard is part of some larger app, like the DeviceManager.apk that has to run in the background all the time.
You can test and unregister, then register again via the menus. So maybe analyzing the data partition's differences in between could help us find the important files.
On a registered device I already tested deleting /data/system/accounts.db, which caused my name etc. to disappear from he device info. Still the wizard did not come up again, and I believe there must be another place where the nook saves a account ID or at least a bit that says, "wizard is finished". I also tried to delete the data directory for the device manager. This simply caused a notification to appear at reboot, that my device has been updated. (Of course it hasn't been updated). Still no wizard to be seen and root was left untouched.
Hi
My Nook is rooted and is great. However I'm needing to deregister it so the new owner can use it.
Whats the best way to do this? I'm not 100% sure I actually have the B&N password as I'll never order from them being in the UK.

I have a motorola droid A4855 and I'm running cm 7.2RC2i installed gapps and ive got rom manager/clockwork recovery and so on...
Here is my issue. I have never been able to get the play store to work. I just bough this phone from a friend of mine a week ago for like $10. I haven't had a phone in almost a year and I'm still somewhat new to Android.
Well before I rooted this phone and put the ROM on it it was still on its basic ROM. I was able to at least open the Market and it would have me put in my credentials to log into google to do the sync thing so I could access and download apps. but it always said it couldnt connect. I have it running off of wifi because I do not have a 3G data package as of right now. I'm not going through a traditional US phone carrier either, although I will be in the near future here. Right now my wireless carrier is through Reach Out Wireless (a government supplemented wireless program). It runs on the Verizon network though. I check my number and it comes back as Cellco dba Verizon Wireless.
Now that I have rooted and installed CM I installed the gapps and now have the Play Store (as opposed to the Market previously). I click on the app to open it and it gives me the dialogue of "You must add an account to the device to continue. DO you want to add one now?" and it gives me the option of Yes and No. I click on yes because I obviously want to, but then the app just closes and I'm back to my home screen. I've downloaded and installed the play store from several different sources and it still doesn't work. Neither do any of the other apps that require a google login. They all ask to chose the account and there are none visible and they give me the option to create a new account but I click on that and it does nothing as well...
Anyone have any idea why this could be happening? Is it just because I don't have a data package? Every other app on my phone works perfectly fine through wifi. And I have tried about 6 different wifi sources as well at home, work, 3 different mcdonalds and a starbucks.

Problem solved. I was not installing the proper gapps package... D'OH! stupid me lol
Ok so not completely solved... The play store keeps saying that my device is not compatible with a lot of the apps I want to download. Most of them say that they require 2.1 and up or 2.2 and up. Well I have 2.3.7 with CM7RC2 on my droid correct? Therefore my device should be compatible right? I called google and they said they would check into it. I'm not sure what could be causing this to happen...
I've been looking at trying to tether my Kindle Fire HD to my cell phone via Bluetooth. I can tethering enabled on my phone via WiFi but it drains the battery rather quickly. Looking around, it appears that are several apps out there that do this (BlueVPN, FoxFi, etc) but none of these are on the Amazon app store (anyone surprised? no? me neither...). Any ideas on how this might be possible given the lack of a Google Play store? Also I thought about seeing if I could sideload it after purchasing the app from the Google play store but thought there'd probably be copy protection on the apk or something that would prevent that?
Resolved
Just wanted to post that I got this working in case anyone else is interested!
I followed the directions to root the device and then installed the Google Play store. I was then able to download the BlueVPN client on the Kindle via the Play store. I am now able to stay connected wirelessly as long as I have my cell phone on me without draining the battery like mad. Yay!
I've downloaded FoxFi on my android phone and setup a wireless network that is broadcasting my personal SSID. It's encrypted so I am the only one that can connect to the WiFi. I can then connect my KFHD wirelessly. Once I am done I stop the broadcast of the wireless network on my phone. The next time I start FoxFi on my phone, the KFHD automatically connects since I keep the wireless SSID and password the same. I haven't seen any issues with my battery life being quickly depleted on my phone or my KFHD

I tried again installing the app from Google Play and now it works flawlessly. The first time I side-loaded the apps.Thank you!
how did you get you phone to tether over wifi on your phone? i can seem to be able to do it.
I've looked through dozens of threads so please forgive me if I'm duplicating.
I had previously rooted my KFHD7. I used Titanium Backup to freeze some apps (like Silk) and I used LBE Security Master to forbid the stock Amazon apps (including system apps) from accessing the Internet (after I noticed Silk being 'un-frozen' and Amazon Video being reinstalled).
So this morning (don't know what possessed me) I allowed all the Amazon apps access the Internet just to see if there were any updates etc. - next thing I knew my Kindle was going all weird so I rebooted - only to find all the frozen apps defrosted and other stock apps reinstalled - and root removed - the SU binary was gone as was the actual SU app - as were Google Play and some other apps - I kid you not - I don't wear a tin foil hat - Amazon went in and effectively destroyed my Kindle by defrosting/reinstalling/upgrading their apps and un-rooting my device.
Anyhow, I decided to re-root.
I chose - 2 Install Permanent Root with Superuser from the Kindle Fire Utility
Last thing I saw on the screen it was installing FFF (FireFireFire), the screen went off and now nothing. I have the factory cable (I bought it here as a just in case), I have the standard cable - but nothing. Not a flicker. No adb commands come back with anything, no fastboot commands - nothing.
Is there any hope? :crying:
Err... last time I checked, we are supposed to be using Kindle Fire First Aide (KFFA) for the KFHD 7". FFF is for the original Kindle Fire?
Edit:
Perhaps when you enabled all internet access, the 7.3.0 update was pushed to your device? If you didn't have it already that is.

I didn't know about KFFA until after I had used KFU (which I already had on my hard drive along with dozens of other utilities).
(I don't visit XDA much (sorry) because I block a lot of adverts, scripts and tracking etc. via Firefox and so the forums don't look very good on my PC and I can't see the Captchas unless I use IE)
I also didn't know about 7.3.0 until I started searching XDA so I'm guessing that's what happened (I had Internet denied to the apps only a couple of months).
So there's no hope then?

There is hope. Find the kindle fire first aide thread under general, follow the directions carefully and post there if you have questions or problems.

I did already (honestly I wouldn't waste your time without trying as much as I possibly could myself) but my KFHD7 is completely unresponsive.
I've tried the whole 20/30 second hold button thing, I've tried the regular cable, the factory cable, different USB ports (it doesn't register on my laptop in any way). I've rebooted (using the 20 second thing), hooked up the factory cable, then rebooted again (I don't even know if it actually is rebooting because there's nothing on the screen) and then hooked up the regular cable - nothing.
I'd send it back to Amazon but all my private emails and contacts are on it (I used Kaiten to download thousands of old emails). All my logins to various websites are on it, all my passwords were synchronized between Firefox for Android and my (Windows) desktop Firefox. I've nothing criminal to hide (criminal no, embarrassing yes - dating/hookup websites etc.) but I wouldn't want to have to change dozens of passwords.
Can I open it up and short something? Is there a way to manually factory reset by doing something physical internally? I love my Kindle - I even bring it to the shower to play music over speakers (with TuneIn). I'm a big Twitter user and had several Twitter apps and several news app - everything was set up just right :crying:
What annoys me (angers me) is that there was no warning from Amazon. They have my email address (and my phone number) and obviously they have access to my Kindle but they never warned me in advance - they treated MY Kindle like it was a piece of corporate equipment still belonging to them.
I swear - I'll never buy one again. Nexus 7 next time.

Well, What KFU does when you choose the "permanent root" option is root the device, And then, Without your permission downloads and attempts to flash FireFireFire bootloader and CWM recovery, Both made for the original KF, Problem with the KFHD is that when the wrong bootloader is flashed, The bootloader partition is irreversibly damaged. So for now, This device can only be recovered using specific tools that amazon has, So you need to contact amazon, They will probably ask you to ship back your device and send you a replacement.
Also, I forgot to mention - I'm in Ireland - so I'd have to change my Amazon account to a friend's name and address in the UK etc.(get that friend in the UK to let me use their address). I'd have to send the Kindle to them (at my expense) they would have to do the swap with Amazon (if I did decide to send it back) and then they would have to send it to me (at my expense).
EDIT: You were replying (thank you) while I was typing AmrBanawan - it seems to be a lost cause then - short of sending it back - for now it's just a (costly) paperweight.

"Without your permission downloads and attempts to flash FireFireFire bootloader and CWM recovery" - therein lies the problem - I thought rooting involved an exploit, an SU binary and an SU app - end of - when I saw FFF come up on the screen I had no idea what was going on.
Lesson learned - an expensive lesson.

If you read the program notes, you'd see a warning against using this on any device except the original Kindle Fire. It also states that it flashes FFF TWRP & COTR. Now since you already had the program on your computer from before, I'm guessing you didn't go to the KFU thread to read up on this stuff. It happens (I've made the same mistake before).
Well my point is, I now make it a habit to read up on threads dealing with whatever program I am going to use. That way I can make sure if there is an updated version of the program, and also to make sure if the device gets an update, whether I can still use the program or not. (Like 7.3.0 having a new bootloader, and we need to downgrade to 7.2.3 to add Hashcode's bootloader).
I hope I don't come off the wrong way. I don't mean to flame or criticize. Just trying to help out for the future!
Ugg... The blue text is a pain to read.
Ciphernoelie, you may want to beg Hashcode to offer a solution (if there is even one) and also, you may have to just come to terms with the fact that you made an honest mistake and now have to hope for the best. I'm sure the folks at Amazon have better things to do with their time rather than snooping around your private stuff. Be optimistic.

I dont believe there is a solution to his problem short of manually taking apart his kindle and flashing the rom by hand, there are no tutorials on this and to my knowledge no services that will do it for you.

Thanks everyone for your replies - no offence taken to honest replies (Protomartyr).
I've costed sending my Kindle to a friend in the UK by courier or by registered mail plus the cost of him sending it back (plus giving him something for his troubles) and I figure for 20 euros more I could buy a Nexus second hand so that's what I'll do. I'll hang on to the Kindle and (this time) watch the threads here to see if someone comes up with a miracle solution to problems like this (I might prise it open and take a look inside ).
Thanks again :highfive:

Na, when the bootloader partition is damaged the device doesn't even power up no matter what you do!

I have had my Kindle Fire rooted and working for 3 years. Just recently I installed the updated GooglePlay Services and keeps crashing no matter what. I even tried downgrading but keeps crashing.
I haven't updated the fire OS as I blocked updates, could be that a problem? I have read around that it's the new play services but if that's the case why doesn't an old version work?
Re: Kindle Fire HD GoogleServices Crashing
Hi.
I don't have a solution exactly. But I actually had the same problem. I rooted my Kindle Fire HD a couple years ago as well and have had no issues until now. Like you I had a lot of problems with Google Services. I tried a few different tacks unsuccessfully (updating, downgrading various Google Framework files etc.).
Ultimately, one day the device crashed and prompted a Factory Recovery Screen.
Fortunately, recovery proceeded with Superuser still intact. I haven't connected device to WiFi yet. Right now I'm trying to get my PC to recognize the Fire HD again, but I'm having some trouble. I still have Kindle Fire Utility and various ADB drivers etc. but I haven't gotten it to work again (yet). I know that newer versions of the software development kits have different requirements (serial numbers). But I'm a bit hazy still and I've just picked up this project again.
Annoyingly, Control Panel shows Kindle Fire in the device list as an ADB interface, but my (outmoded?) Kindle Fire Utility doesn't show it, nor does it even show the device as a USB storage......Strangely Android File Transfer on my Mac still works.
Right now the device boots runs Apex launcher and looks like stock Android. Previously, it ran all Google products relatively seamlessly (with some hiccups now and then). I never got rid of the Kindle OS, just rooted it and had launchers sit on top. And for a good couple years Google apps ran on it (and they auto-updated too). The main OS itself, though wasn't being updated and I suspect this is the reason why current versions of Google Services couldn't function any longer.
Hopefully, I should at least be able to sideload apps again, if not get all Google Apps working again.
Good luck with your efforts!
Update: several re-installs and reboots later, ADB utilities on my PC work and I can view/mod the drive of the device. I got old versions of Google Play to work, but any attempt at using Google Play Services results in a crash. Other apps, ex. Netflix are totally fine, micro-HDMI to TV still works beautifully. So it doesn't seem like the Kindle OS needs updating, if its easier to leave it intact---I'm still on the fence about installing a new ROM. Regardless, I continue to be impressed with the quality of the hardware Amazon uses....
