I have some questions regarding the installation of SlimBean ROMs from Stock ROMs:
Upgrading Slim Bean
Unless we specify otherwise in changelog
Reboot to recovery, wipe cache, dalvik cache then just flash your device zip.
From Froyo/GB Rom to SlimBean
Get yourself booted with cm9 or cm10. then follow the steps "From another JB or ICS ROM"

1. I'm from GingerBread. Does this refer to the "[NIGHTLY][ROM][4.2.2] CyanogenMod 10.1 for Samsung Captivate" from Android Development?
From another JB or ICS Rom to SlimBean
Download device_x.x.zip, slim_gapps.zip.
Enter CWM, wipe data, format system ( in mounts and storage)
Flash Device_x.x.zip***, then MUST flash slim_gapps.zip (other files optional)

2. Assuming I'm from JellyBean Stock ROM, do I have to install cm9 or cm10 as well like the one posted above? Before proceeding to these steps?
From Other Custom ROMs:
Wipe data
Format /system
Flash rom
Reboot

3. Do they still require cm9 or cm10 installed as well? Or no need?
GB > CM10 > Slim
Just follow instructions for each step, nothing special or too complicated.
You can use CM10 stable. Get the files + instructions from http://www.cyanogenmod.org/
For Slim files + instructions go to http://www.slimroms.net/
Yes, Slim requires CM10, can't upgrade GB to Slim directly. There is no Jelly Bean stock ROM for Captivate.
If you already have working Jelly Bean custom ROM, then flash Slim directly, no need to go through CM10 again.
Is your GB rooted and with CWM already?

I suppose you could change out CM10 for a Custom CM10 based rom? That's what I did and it seems to run fine.

Yeah, that works as well. CM10 is just the simpler option as it's more popular/easy to find.
Yes, and CM10 has a stable release, no issues expected with installation.

So I can dirty flash Slim 3.0 over cm10 without the factory reset? Just Dalvik and cache? Not the newest Slim for cm10.1...
I never recommend dirty flashing. If you want to move to Slim, then go for the latest 4.2 version. It has many new and improved features.
Thanks for the reply.
Some follow ups:
1. Is it recommended to use CM10 Stable instead of CM10 Nightlies? Does it matter in installing custom roms?
2. Nope. Not yet rooted and without CWM. How to do those for this phone?
3. Is rooting required before installing custom roms from stock? Are all custom roms already rooted?
1. CM10 has stable version (tested), CM10.1 is still in experimental stage (may contain bugs, including installation process). It is my personal preference to use CM10 stable.
2. You may start from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 or here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YvC_lLbjk06WOttsifG8fD2QUHvC9_rDtZdNrDZKAFc/edit?pli=1, both very good guides.
3. Yes, Root/CWM is required. Yes, custom ROM's are rooted and with CWM. Once you have custom JB ROM installed, switching to another JB based is very easy.

Does this mean if I'm from Gingerbread stock and choosing another custom rom besides SlimBean, there's no need of installing CM10 because they are already "Custom CM10 based rom"? So all I have to do from stock GB, is to flash a kernel with CWM to be able to flash the custom rom zip from sd card?
It is always good to flash any rom which is complete in itself
Slim rom is not as its slimmed
Say it can be captivating, hellybean, any cm10
Then flash slim rom
Wiping data is necessary when switching from one rom to another as every rom contains different features

You ALWAYS gotta follow the FULL ROM instructions posted in their OP.
Coming from GB, you'll have to flash the ROM twice. You'll need their respective Gapps.
There are plenty of guides on this, you need to do some reading if you're not sure of what you're doing.

Well, that's what I did. Was on GB 2.3.5, rooted/cwm with tut in my sig, then from that flashed Captivating X5 with no issues (that may have been hellybean based idk I lose track since sepphi switches bases a decent bit). Currently running SlimBean Build 4.2 with no issues (Captivating X5 -> X6 -> SaltyBean Final -> SlimBean 3 - > SlimBean 4 - > SlimBean 4.2 (my cappys life in the past few weeks).

What do you mean by flashing the ROM twice? Please explain. I didn't understand that part.
And regarding Gapps, if I'm not wrong, most custom roms have it already included?
If ever it's not installed, will flashing the latest Gapps zip be compatible with this device? No compatibility issues?

When coming from something else than JB, you need to repartition, which is what flashing the ROM twice will do; Flash the ROM, get back in recovery and flash it again.
Also, Gapps aren't cooked into JB ROMs. They need to be flashed right after flashing the ROM.

Simply grab the one provided in their OP. If some apps need updating, just do so through the play store.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Gapps for Captivating included in the ROM? If not now, were they prior to X5? Don't remember flashing Gapps when I used to run Captivating.

They could be, I haven't looked at Captivating all too much as I gave my cappy to my little brother before it got released. (I'm actually quite behind on ROM updates for the cappy tbh)
Thanks. I think I could handle it with regards to the Gapps thing.
Lastly, I just wanted to clarify if I'm directly going to a Custom ROM from stock, do I still need to be rooted? Or just CWM installed?

Hi,
Recently i have just switched from IPhone to Galaxy Note, while really need some advise on get it "rooted" and flash with ICS (Since many people feed back its eventually better" perhaps someone can guide me a proper way of backing up my system as well as flashing it?
my phone details as below:-
Model - GT-N7000
Android Version - 2.3.6
Baseband - N7000DXKL2
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA1(I suppose this should be KJ1? but on my phone it shows this...)
Build number - GINGERBREAD.XXLA1
in such situation should i proceed to get it flash with the KJ1 method?
yes your ROM is newer, so you have to downgrade it.
You can downgrade to KJ1 pre rooted ROM, download link you may find on 4th line on my signature.

So in summary all i need to do is to downgrade my ROM to KJ1, follow the guide to root it, then only flash it to ICS?
by doing all these will it void the warranty of the phone?
Forget about ICS for right now..I would consider it advanced to install and for beginners I would stick to rooted GB builds until you got more familar with the phone and flashing etc..

Yes, Get Root + CWM
To install ICS, follow installation guide available with ICS ROM you want to install
Somwat agree with MrDSL, at least you shud read a lot before installing ICS.
Warranty can be regain by Reflashing Stock ROM.
Yup, indeed doing more research before i proceed to flash my SGN, sincerely thank you for all the advise and guidance though.
Rooting is pretty clear to you now I think.
As for flashing ICS ROMs, I don't actually agree with anyone above. I have earlier flashed TeamRocket's ICS ROM, Imilka's AOSP ROM and ICS Stunner on my note. ICS Stunner is actually one of the best you could have for ICS. (Almost everything works, or rather everything actually works ). Now I am using Imilka's CM9 port from SGS2, very very smooth, stable and most of the things work. Download and install instructions are pretty clear in their respective threads. I would actually suggest you to go ahead with ICS ROMs (ICS Stunner or CM9 especially)!
PM me if you need any help!

Hi,
I'm currently on stock ICS (4.0.4).
My phone has recently started occasionally/randomly restarting itself.
I've read that doing a factory reset or data wipe will result in a brick so was thinking of switching to a custom rom.
What's the best Jelly Bean rom? or isn't there a good stable one?
If not then what's the best stable/usable ICS rom and how do I get there from stock?
I know I need to flash GB via pc odin, but what after that?
There are warnings that say "FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!"
I just wanna be as clear as possible. Would hate to have a brick.
Thanks.

JB roms are still in development and not so stable for daily use yet. For flashing custom ICS you do not have to flash GB rom, just flash safe custom ICS kernel and flash custom rom through cwm recovery.
You can also wipe your current rom after flashing safe custom kernel. No need to flash custom rom just because you cannot wipe on stock kernel
For my personal of view, liquid smooth jb v2.0 beta is the best at the moment.
If you on rooted ics. You can flash jb rom thru safe kernel such as cm9 kernel, gb kernel or notecore kernel.
But please read carefully and understand what noted at op and follow the installation method.
Good luck.

Never Never Wipe on ICS as stated in op.
Now everybody knows JB is still under development and in preview. So I think you should have to wait for a stable version to enjoy the juice
For ICS you can try Cleanote v5,Kingdroid or RR for better performance and battery life
Here are the links :-

Here is the best thread for rooting and flashing custom kernel on Note- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Once you are rooted and on safe custom kernel you can follow the instructions on your chosen custom rom OP.
In terms of safer installation method. It have too many of opinions around note forum. Some will say flash any rom or nandroid by using abssy 4.2 kernel, some will say not neccesary to use abssy 4.2 kernel with the secure and safe kernel exists such as notecore and speedmod kernel.
Some will advice you must go back gb before flash cm base rom and some will tell you totally bull**** and not neccesary to go back gb before flash cm base rom with secure tw kernel around.
Confuse? For me, all of them have the right opinion and nothing wrong with them. Thats your own smartphone which cost about usd 500. If you scare of something, just follow the long installation method. If you feel lazy to take do such of long intallation step, you can always use the secure kernel to swap in between gb, tw and cm base rom.
But anyway, is your own asset, your own choice. You are the one who will take full responsibility for doing any modification, rooting and flashing. Not anyone else here.
You can always refer dr.ketan advice.

Hi, I need help with my Galaxy Note. I just buy secondhand Galaxy Note, it has XXLS2 4.1.1 rom for now. I want flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom on it. My previous phone was HTC HD2, so I'm used to flashing without limitation So, I need your help to tell me if I'm thing good about it. So, firstly I must flash Philz kernel for my phone, to get root and recovery. But for my rom is only version 2.7... is it safe to flash? And next I can just do full wipe, reboot, and flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom, yes?
You won't be able to flash a aokp rom using philz 2.7 as it will not install and error 7.
-Install Philz and gain root and cwm
-Then place all the required files to flash the rom to storage.
-Then flash a different safe kernel like hydracore or cm kernel.
-Boot into recovery and do wipes and formats and flash. the rom. (while on a different kernel you might not be able to boot into the rom. Just recovery)
And version 2.7 is safe? Why there is no 3.99 version for this rom? But when I finally flash PA rom, I can stay with kernel included in this rom? Or I need to flash cm kernel second time? I'm going to make backup before flashing new rom, but I'm just wondering if I can normally recover this on PA rom or I need to flash stock philz kernel before restoring... So the "diffrent safe" kernel may be "Kernel_CM10.1_20130126_Nightly_CWM.zip", yes? It will work with aosp based pa rom? I'm going to flash 2.99 version...

Yes 2.7 is safe. Just that it cannot install some roms.
Because it's and old kernel.
Yes stay with the kernel included in the rom
Yes PA has a safe kernel and the backup can be restored.
Any kernel like hydracore or cm will do.
Also 2.99 PA might not to that's stable. So.. Your choice. You can use and older version like 2.57 as well
Actually Philz 2.7 is ICS/older JB, and therefore not subject to error 7. Good to wipe and Flash ROMs with. (It's safe too)

Look the paranoid android will be a stable ROM but you'll have more features in the other hybrid ROM. It's your choice. ROMs by beerbong are very good and stable
I'd personally recommend you the P.A.C. ROM also by beerbong. It has all the features you look in a custom ROM, AOKP, CM, PA. PAC ROM is the way...
Hi Varad297,
I would recommend that Rom too, currently using it on my ZTE Blade and on my HP Touchpad and love it.... I plan to upgrade my ZTE Blade to a N7000 come October and been asking a few questions as I am new to this beast (N7000 and all its bricking problems) but not new to Android...
I asked a question a while ago, but still waiting for it to be answered so perhaps you could advise as you know this ROM.
The N7000 I will be getting will come with Vodafone UK official stock JB rom, (Android 4.1.2 I believe). However i want to take it to PAC 22:40 (based on Android 4.2.2).
However I am confused as to which Philz recovery kernel I would need? And how (what to look for) in the kernel when choosing...? Philz seems to be the most recommended one, but there are so many to choose from....
thanks, Lister
You mean which Philz kernel you'd need to flash PAC? I flash my ROMs on the CWM recovery as i do not trust the Philz kernel doue to some problem while flashing certainAOSP ROMs on the CWM-based recovery provided with the Philz kernel. I'd rather suggest you yo flash ROMs on a CWM recovery like that which comes with the CM kernel.

Nope. Throw Cyanogenmod on that baby.
GB: CM7
ICS: SlimICS
JB: CM10.1.3
4.2.2 performance wise is the same as 4.1, but you get access to Google Now and a few more tidbits here and there (like the new Clock app)

I find that some kernel don't play well with the Cyanogenmod 9/10/Any other ICS JB roms, especially if they're kernel for AOSP, and the whole BML to MTD process gets a little iffy(it never boots, just constantly reboot to recovery, partitions can't be formatted, mounted partition are always empty). If you're starting from a Samsung ROM's kernel, it goes OK most of the time, but if you start from Semaphore JB or GearKernel or another AOSP kernel, the installation process just skipped the BML to MTD conversion, or screw it up somehow. It may just be me, but doing one extra step can't hurt
The phone in question runs stock ROM. First needs to be updated to GB 2.3.x, than Corn Kernel + CM10.1 Stable will update it to JB 4.2.2. No need to flash another GB-based ROM after the stock GB. CM10.1 Stable installation process has no issues with Corn Kernel. Tested many times.
