For some reason, the onscreen Back and Home buttons now appear in the lockscreen in the black space where the navigation buttons normally go. The Recent Apps button does not show in the lockscreen; only Back and Home. Before it was just a blank space when viewing any lockscreen. These buttons have no response and not even a haptic feedback when being pressed. It was bad enough that the black space was there in the lockscreen. How I have two buttons that don't do anything.
I have a TL with stock AT&T Jelly Bean firmware, but it also occurs on the generic .140 firmware.
Has anyone else seen this happen on their Xperia T/TL/TX? Is there some known setting or other thing that makes these buttons appear?
The back and home buttons appear when the notification panel is opened. Else it is just an ugly black strip. The functions are basically to close the notification panel after it is pulled down. As far as I know there is no way to remove it unless you completely disable the navigation bar and enable Pie Controls like me. (Or some alternate soft buttons).
If in your case the buttons are always displayed.. it could be a bug.
please

Yes, that is the solution. Smart Key app keeps those virtual buttons on in the lockscreen.

is there no way to keep the app and let the navigation bar remain invisible on lockscreen ..
or any alt app ?
Not that I'm aware of. Hopefully someone will discover a solution at some point.
Indeed I was the one who mentioned this problem, I also tried to address this problem to sony to update there app. But no response. Pleas all of you go to the play store and address this problem. Maybe sony will hear us this time.

I'm an amateur at all this I've managed to get my nook color rooted, and I've installed a few apps. I've tried softkeys, but I'm not 100% happy with the result. First it wouldn't start on its own after a reboot. I reconfigured it following some directions form another user, and it starts now, but it's still too "busy", with bars and buttons popping up all over.
ALL I WANT is an app or some way to configure a "back" button and "menu" button in the lower black bar where the clock, bettery meter, etc are? Any ideas?
Either that, or is there a way to turn off ALL THE OTHER FUNCTIONS AND DISPLAYS of softkeys EXCEPT the ability to go "back" when pressing the physical "N"/home button, which is how I have it now.
In the end, I don't want any "back" or "menu" buttons on the actual viewable screen except the lower black bar.
THANKS a million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not quite what you asked for but i remapped my volume keys for menu and back. works great for my needs. i control volume with a widget now.

Well, if all you want is a back button on the notification bar..... you have one. Not talking about the back button that appears on there either. Just swipe left on the notification bar and it should always work as a back button.
Other than that, there's an app you can try called Button Savior you can get from the Market. It has a small launcher button that appears on the edge of the screen. You can move it around a limited range as you see fit. It's not as complicated or as "busy" as Softkeys.
If you find the visible button not to your liking, you can try this modded version of Button Savior. The button is invisible. You can see where the button actually lies by switching to the Sense UI theme. Then back to the default or Froyo theme to make it invisible once more. The modded version of Button Savior can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897253
I suggest you try the Market version of Button Savior first.
I'm going to second Button Savior. It hasn't let me down once

You don't have Softkeys set up properly..

I understand what you are looking for. I would like the same thing, but I do not believe there is anything out there for us..
I may end up remapping the volume keys myself.

With SoftKeys you can put the menu and back buttons in the notification area, since ver. 1.0.8 I believe. Then, disable the popper, and you are good to go.
Hi,
Not sure if this is bug or not, but all the icons on the Xperia Z are only touch responsive if you press on the upper left corner of the icon. (except for the back, home, task keys)
If you press it like you normally do (in the middle) it will show you the animation that it's pressed-in but will not do anything else.
And press-hold on the icon will jump to the add home screen pane.
I'm on the latest firmware build .434, the only way I could fix this; is to reinstall to its original state via SUES.
Anyone else experiencing this, or know more about this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Solution: Go to settings > Developer Options > Enable all three Animation Scales.. Reboot.
This is a bug in Xperia Z launcher. I myself found this solution

Thanks lovemyarc for your answer!
Yes, indeed I did disable all the animation scales!
Because I didn't needed them, thougth it might speed up 0.01%
Anyway since restoring I haven't disabled those functions and the bug hasn't occured anymore. :fingers-crossed:
Cheers!

I love the idea of softkeys. With it you can put bigger screens on smaller devices and they can disappear whenever needed to.
The main problem is that it's a 50/50% chance that they will disappear when I think that they should. With physical keys that's never an issue.
Movies, yes
Games, yes
Full screen applications, yes
etc.
What determines when the keys disappear and not? Is it up to the app creator? What can I do about it (I'm not rooted)?
They can't always disappear in full screen games. If the game needs a back button you would be stuck.
I assume there is something in there that tells it. Much like if an app does not have an on screen menu button (usually three dots), a menu button will be added to the lower right side of the portion of the screen where the soft keys are.
It's not there for all apps, only ones that don't have a menu button on screen. Not sure if this is declared by the app or if 4.4 can detect it somehow and show the button when needed.

On my tablet (running 4.1) I get these dots you are talking about (but not in the lower right corner, they replace the ordinary softkeys)). That's all fine because they take less space (from what I remember) then the ordinary softkeys.
If it all comes down to having a back button in the app, why not implement that in the app?
I downloaded crazy taxi yesterday and those softkeys are annoying me as hell.
I ended up getting used to using LMT and just turn on expanded desktop to make the navigation keys go away. That way if LMT gives me any trouble...I just hit the power button and turn off expanded desktop and my navigation keys are back. (Gravity box to get that option in power menu.)
Hated pie at first...but used to it now.

Hello,
after the sources for the Z2 Pro have been released and good Custom ROMs are possible, I would love to buy this beautiful device. I've read alot about this U-Touch thing, where you navigate only by using the Home Button... and I don't like it. So my question is: Does this phone also have the normal Back, Home and Recents hardware buttons?
Thanks!
Hi,
Yes, you can add on screen buttons in "Developer Options" menu. At least you can do it with z2 (non pro). I guess you will have this option too.
So there are no "real" hardware buttons to the left and the right of the home button?
On screen buttons are in developer options in both models, make sure you reboot to effect the changes.
Thanks for your answers. I know about the possiblity to show the On Screen Buttons, but that's not what I wanted to know.
I'm curious if the device also has dedicated hardware buttons (not on screen) for Back and Recents, or just the U-Touch button?
It only has 1 physical button on the front..
I'd love to see an app or even integration in a custom rom to be able to configure the behaviour of the front button. What are the chances this will become reality?
It already lets you configure what the button does. You can also preset actions to open specific apps.

But that is in the ZUI ROM right? I'd like to see this in a separate app or built into custom ROM so it can also be used outside ZUI.
Now that the sources are available someone who knows what he is doing should be able to pull this off.
Is there a way to make swipe left on the u-touch button act like a back button? Maybe there would be a way to have it open an scripted action that acts as back button?
Edit: Just figured out that short tap is back, so my problem is solved!
Thanks, this helped me out!
I'm looking for a phone with this same exact button. I'm always super stunned how retarded iphones are compared to my $200 phone.
My navigation button seems to have lost the 'home' and 'recent apps' functionality. I still have fingerprint unlock, back and google menus.
I tried turning the normal nav bar back on and off, but that didn't help. Stock ROM. Any ideas?

Are you sure that there's no dead touch spot on the screen? Try to turn on visual touch feedback in the developer options to check the area around the home and recent button. But I think there's no way to avoid a reset. Don't forget to back up your stuff!
also make sure that you dont have any overlay app, like dim screen, rounded corners etc. They often mess up system buttons, because this is how android protect from fake touches made by apps.

Touches all look reasonable (but there is no indication for the off-screen buttons). No overlays or anything like that on this phone. I think it will have to be a reset, but kind of reluctant to do that in a rush...
