[Q] Optimus 4X SLOW AFTER JB update - LG Optimus 4X HD

Hello
Is someone else experiencing the same thing? After I updated my Optimus 4X to jelly bean my phone became very slow. Free ram dropped to around 200MB. At first I did the upgrade from the LG software, while preserving the settings and everything. I got around 12500ish on the Antutu benchmark. But the phone itself, the keyboard, chrome, sms writting everything was really nearly unusable. Slow loading of the webpages in chrome over wifi, EDGE or 3G not loading pages.
So I searched the forum and some of the guy suggested that the it is advised to wipe the phone to factory default and than update the firmware. I did that too while holding down power and volume key down on the boot. After the update, it was the same. So in the end, I downgraded to 10H IML74K which is working as it should and as it was before upgrading. Now has someone else had the same problem, and how did you resolve it?

flash v20 using "KDZ_FW_UPD" and then make a full wipe. now everything shoud work fine
BTW, next time please use the Q&A section

I did the KDZ update method...and full wipe. And it did not help. As you know also the downgrade is not possible with kdz update procedure, but has to be done with other exe tool. So to add to the tried options I did the LG update/upgrade and a KDZ firmware update and a full wipe. Without good results.
And also I did the search on the forum, otherwise I would not be posting the question, as I do it only when I check and I do not find a solution or thread.

hmm, Why don't you try downgrading to 4.0.3, and then installing new software through KDZ updater?
Here's the rollback instruction:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179126

I downgraded to 10H ...that is 4.0.3 and I did the upgrade...and full wipe with and without JB, before and after JB.

I cannot say that my phone got "very slow" or "nearly unusable" after the JB update. Still, I did experience the same 200 mb drop in free ram (whether that's positive or negative is another question). Sometimes I got lags when switching homescreens or opening and closing apps as well as having homescreen icons "rebuilding" themselves after closing an app. I tried wiping all caches, did a factory reset and froze all unused stock apps. Problems remained the same.
Therefore I rolled back to ICS 10h. Right now I can live perfectly well without the new JB features and I guess I will simply wait and see if any better update comes along. I guess the frustation with the JB update is due to the fact that it's not quite understandable why a clean update on a cache wiped and factory resetted stock version causes trouble for some users. Even more so because others experience no problems at all.

The LGFlash Tool perfoms the cleanest install.
You shouldn't have any problems after that.
In JB, the page scroll is slower than in ICS. Nothing to do about it...
The rest works fast(er) as on ICS.

I have the same problem, after the update my phone is really slow, the louncher is too slow an laggy, when I do click on phone icon, the application takes about 5 seconds to open.
Once the phone has the screen off for about 30 minutes and turn it on, the icons and widgets disappear and reappear in about 4 seconds and the screen goes completely blocked.
When I few minutes without opening the menu and open it, this is slow and has lagged flow.
I've also noticed quite lag on the lock screen.
I have a question, to make roolback the phone must be rooted?
Thanks

Have you done factory reset after update? If you havent, do it and the problem will be gone..:good:

Thanks

No,just do a factory reset and you should be fine!

I have absolutely same problem as you.....it really bugs me

I too agree with all who fell the JB update has slowed LG optimus 4X HD. I recently updated to V20 (4.1.2) and I could see lot of lag in many of the operations. A factory reset although improved the performance, but the lag is still noticeable. Jelly bean was supposed to make things smoother (with its project butter) but in this case, it has made the performance worst.
I am planning to switching back to V10

Have you tried this method?

why don't you install cyanogenmod latest nightly and then optimize it,
i have more than 500mb ram available
underclocked my processor to some 800
and just disabled few default apps
and i have no lag at all even i play low level games with listening to music in background and replying to messages at the same time with zero lag.
so try cm 10.1 and optimize it...

You don't have lag and also few other things. Before advice a OS against other, report also the issues. There are a few with CM... Until now, only official ICS or JB are the 100% working OS's. With or without lag (also depends on user settings).

Well it surely can't do anything bad
Factory reset might sound time consuming. But If you backup to the external SD using the LG backup app (for the settings of the phone, accounts and widget/homescreens) together with Titanium Backup for the Apps + Data. You can bring back your phone to what it was before a Factory reset.
But it looks like you flashed V10G, a Factory Reset after a flash can also help if apps start to act weird. Reinstalling apps is something I myself would do anyways then.
Factory reset helps if the phone seems to have strange behavior after rooting. I didn't have that strange behavior after root but other members did.
Success!
Many have reported better battery life after doing a factory reset when rooted. Might be that some remains from the rooting process are still there and eat up the battery.
Thr answer is no.

The "factory reset" requirement is not only for battery life improvement.
Its because of the root process that makes the phone to be slow like hell...
I can't say if the battery life get improved or not cause, everytime I root the phone the next step is "factory reset".
Well, in my experience the phone didn't become "slow as hell", because I would've surely noticed it.

Upgrading to JB Issue

I'm looking to upgrade to JB or another rom as my current version is starting to act up. My phone has gotten ridiculously slow and I struggle with switching tasks and random reboots. I'm currently running 6.7.232, I flashed this version last year before the official ICS release came out. Can I flash straight to JB from my current version or do I have to go back to GB then doing the OTA upgrades? I'm very confused on what order I should follow when trying to get JB. I've been trying to find a guide but I'm afraid of bricking my phone if I try to go back to GB or straight to JB.
Thanks for the help!

My suggestion is don't touch the Jelly Bean leak. I check the thread out every couple days and nothing but problems. If you want to try Jelly Bean download Liquid Smooth 2.3. The only thing not working is Bluetooth (apparently, have no use for bluetooth).
I believe you must be on .246 to update to JB. No frozen, deleted, or altered system files either. I took the update and am very happy with it.

Can't you flash to 246 using RSD then OTA to JB? I'm not sure you can flash to GB from 232 or whatever u said u are on. I tried doing that and got an error each time, but I was trying to go from 246 to GB. I flashed 246 over my installed 246 then OTA to JB and my device has been stellar since.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. I flashed to 246 and OTA'd to JB. It ended up working quite well. I want to put on CM10.1, hopefully I don't have to flash back to 246.
A couple things here. First you could have saved time and effort by just fxz'ing to jb directly using the 98.72.22 fxz. Yes, even over 232. Second, your comment about "hoping you don't have to downgrade" is frightening. Simple solution to that one. You can't. Period.

So if you've taken the OTA JB update then you're screwed? No possible way to go back to ICS?
My phone worked great on ICS but since the forced OTA JB update it has become a complete piece of crap. I lose Verizon signal constantly and have to reboot my phone to get it back. This happens probably 6-7 times a day. Text messages hang and don't send, I get strange UI FC's, etc.
Has anyone else run into these issues? Any suggestions on how to fix?
Thanks,
Michael
Correct, there is no possible way to downgrade to ICS once you've taken the JB update. The security mechanism behind this inability to downgrade has been well understood since the ICS days. Given that you couldn't downgrade to GB from ICS, I'm not sure why so many people are surprised to find the same situation with JB.
Anyway, to fix your issues you should probably do a Factory Data Reset (FDR). This will wipe your data partition so you will have to reinstall your apps and setup the phone as if it were brand new out of the box. However, this will give it a fresh start and will likely fix the issues you're seeing with the phone.

I thought about doing that, but I was hoping not to have to do so.
Since I was also dumb enough to not have OTA root keeper installed of course I lost root too. I see there is another post about rooting stock JB using Linux, etc. Has anyone developed another method yet? I have searched but haven't found anything. I used the motofail method to get root on ICS, but no posts as to whether that works on JB or not.
Thanks,
Michael
No possibility of root without using the Linux exploit. Don't bother waiting for a windows version as it's not coming. There are "easy root" solutions out there that are basically a virtualbox image that you can just load up and run the script.
As for an FDR, you're needing to if you're having those problems. Nothing else is going to fix it.

Thanks for patiently answering my questions, I appreciate it.

It's worth a shot. FDR won't affect the system partition at all so if it works you won't lose root doing the FDR.

Ok I will give it a try and go from there..
Hopefully with root restored and FDR my phone will return to what it was and I will be happy with it once again.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000 freezes after around 30 seconds from reboot.

Hello everyone, thanks for taking your time and reading this.
I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000 for about two years now. This phone is not my primary phone, as I just use it as a secondary phone for different apps/backup, most of the times the phone is turned off.
But a few days ago, I turned the phone on, and once the homescreen had loaded, around 20-30 seconds later, the phone will freeze, and there's nothing else you can do other than take the battery out to turn it off.
A few details about the phone: the phone has never been flashed, and the OS has never been touched. It's basically at stock, but the only thing I remember is updating the official firmware through the Samsung link in the settings. The phone has never been modded, and that's what bugs me the most. (I've never had experience with 'modding' phones with custom ROMS and such)
So, after sitting at home all day looking for a fix, I couldn't find anyone else in my situation. There are a few similar situations, but I am yet to find something that replicates my problem exactly.
I've also tried rebooting the phone in many different ways, for example, taking out the memory card, then taking out the sim card, then taking them both out completely.
That's when I found a link which gave me information on how to factory reset the device. Since nothing else was working, I decided to go for it.
I held the VOLUME UP button + the HOME button, and hit the power button and got the menu up.
The menu works fine, I was flicking through the options for 10 whole minutes just to check if it freezes or not, and it works perfectly fine.
So then I factory reset the phone, wiped the system cache, and I also formatted the internal SD card.
Still, the problem persists. This time, the phone will reboot for a little while longer, since I expect the system files are getting set up, then it asks for the language, and before I can hit English, it freezes, and the screen stays like that until the battery is dead. All the hardware buttons don't do anything, it's basically fully dead with the screen still on the OS menu.
I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do?
I can provide more information if needed, and I can even upload a video to YouTube if you want a better aspect of the problem.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Ah, sorry, got the title completely messed up there.
Yes it's the GT-i9000 and I think it had Froyo 2.2.1, forgot to include that in the main text.
Could try Rooting the phone and wiping all options in Recovery and Reboot
or
Could be that something maybe corrupted which is halting the system
Upload a video so that we can offer better advice
Which Rom / Firmware are you using?
Last option.
Would Recommend Downloading Rom (whichever you choose) and go from there....
Major UPDATE:
Okay, so after sticking at it the whole day and trying to get a better understanding of this situation, I've managed to work around the problem slightly. It's not fixed yet, though.
So after the screen had frozen for the (insert number here)th time, the battery was starting to go empty, so I stuck it on charge, but I forgot that I had left the frozen screen on (currently frozen on the 'Language Select' set up menu).
After about 20 minutes, the phone vibrated and a little message popped up, and it said that 'the process Soundhound.com.xxx.xxx was force closed', or something along the lines. I can't remember fully because it popped up for only around 4 seconds and disappeared.
As soon as I saw that, I quickly went to the application settings and deleted all of the soundhound cache/data and then removed the app completely. After that I thought it was fixed for sure, so I was messing around with the phone and using different apps to see if it freezes again, and it didn't.
But I had to restart the phone to see if the freeze issues happened again, and yep, it was there again, this time the same as the first issue, where it used to freeze up in the home screen. AND, I let it sit on the frozen screen for 15 minutes and it was that SAME soundhound app that got force closed, so once it got out of the frozen state, I quickly went to the application settings and the app was still there, it was like I didn't even delete it?
This leads to my new problem, the so called 'hard factory wipe/reset' doesn't actually reset EVERYTHING. As seen in my other post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2305825
Now I'm completely confused as to what I should do.
I've pretty much tried everything, and i'm sure a FULL hard reset where EVERYTHING gets wiped out might just fix it? The thing is though, I don't know how? I've been trying to fix this phone for about 7 hours straight now.
My opinion Flash a Stock Rom or what ever you wish and then Root it...
If selling it just dont bother with Rooting it.
As you say you have been at it for Several hours and flashing takes less than an hour even for a newbie if following the procedure correctly
As going by what you say it seems that files are messed up on the phone and better to start fresh

Is there a legit way to flash it, maybe through Samsungs website? I don't want to mess around with custom files, as I would like to keep everything clean.
Oh, and also, I just went through the media files and found some of my old pictures too. So for some reason, the 'format internal SD' option in the recovery menu isn't working.
If I flash it, will I have to flash it to Froyo 2.2.1 which it is currently in right now?
Here's information I found on the 'About phone' menu:
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
[email protected] # 1
Build number:
FROYO.XXJPY
Baseband version:
i9000XXJPY

Thanks.
Briefly read your guide, and it's all mind boggling to a newbie like me :silly: lol
I might just have to flash it, because this problem is getting a little bit annoying now.
Which parts of your guide should I follow exactly? And shouldn't I be sticking Froyo 2.2.1 back in? Won't a newer firmware (such as the 2.3.6) make the phone slower/drain more battery than usual?
Oh and one last thing, what's the difference between rooting and flashing a phone? Cheers.
Rooting briefly means :
Giving yourself root access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked read only
This allows you to change all kinds of things that normally you wouldn't be able to
Flashing : Erm.. Flashing a new Rom on your Phone or the process of over-writing your internal memory
2.3.6 will be ok for you if you wish to stay just Stock on your phone.
Plus the fact if you wish to move to another Rom later on its just a matter of Rooting the Phone and installing the Custom Rom
Just follow guide from the : HOW TO GUIDE : TUTORIAL TO FLASH 2.3.6 JVU + ROOT BEFORE INSTALLING CUSTOM ROM
and you will be ok.

So the 2.3.6 Firmware you provide, is that known a 'custom firmware'?
I've been searching for YouTube videos with people explaining how to flash, but all the videos sound like they're speaking about some rocket science sh** lol
Now I'm super confused, some guy on YouTube is flashing to 2.3.6 JVT while you're doing JVU, I don't even know what that means haha
I just don't want to brick the phone and make it completely dead, that's why I'm just making sure I understand the basics before I go ahead with it, sorry if I'm starting to sound annoying lol
You wont brick it if you follow it correctly...
2.3.6 JVU is the basis for all custom roms been flashed unless stated otherwise by Rom Developers.
As its basically a stock 2.3.6 then when you want to flash another Rom its just a matter of Rooting the 2.3.6

Ah, okay.
Well, I'm in the process of downloading your files, THANKS for ALL the help you've given so far, sir!
I'll flash once all the files are downloaded. By the way, does 2.3.6 have Google Play store, and not the old Andropid Market?
I hope I can get this done before I head off to sleep in a few hours, been a very long day haha
I'll let you know of the results, cheers and have a good day sir.

Back again, haha.
I was just wondering, did you say I should root or not? As rooting it seems like a bit of a hassle? Plus, it says that I should install a custom rom zip file if I decide to root it, but I don't have one? I am using your 2.3.6 which was in your Odin Files download link, right?
So if I root, what do I do exactly?

Okay, so I've rooted it also now, and unplugged the USB.
Now it's restarted, and the language set-up page is there, and guess what? .. It froze again :|
Exactly the same way before I flashed it :crying: :crying: lol
I actually feel like crying right now haha, I think the phone may be completely dead? Something is seriously corrupt with it I'm guessing?
I've never dropped it, or accidentally dropped liquid on it or anything like that.
I have absolutely no idea what to do now. Sigh.
Thanks for your help either way though.

Random Restarts

I experience random restarts despite of the ROM I have flashed. I have tried JellyBeer ROM, PA ROM, Stunner ROM, Sweet ROM and many more with their respective default kernel. My stupid phone even restarts in CWM and trying to flash a new ROM.
What could be the issue? How can I get this fixed?
Random restarts are quite common with ROMs under development or if not flashed properly. Update the ROM to a stable version or re-flash the ROM wiping cache, factory reset and see. You can flash a stable ROM to get rid of the problem.
All wipes and reflash may solve your problem...

I always flash a stable version of the ROM with a full wipe. Even I format preload, cache, system, etc. Whatever ROM I flash it does not help.
But I simply can not understand what cause the restarts on my phone ?
No harm in just re-flashing a ROM. I face random restarts on the PAC currently, this is a common problem. Else try one of the stable 4.1.2 TW ROMs. Hope you don't face a restart then!
It might be a app you are using. Install catlog from play store and find the cause. You say it happens on all ROMs you flash. Is there any particular app you restore

Thanks I'll try this for sure and let you know. I have installed the app. Can you please tell me how can I use this to make sure what's the problem ?
If you're getting random reboots on TW and AOSP based Roms, I would suspect an app driving the system nuts.

I only use well reputed apps such as Facebook, solid explorer, google handouts, flipboard etc
Facebook App has a good reputation? Would be new to me. Look at their app reviews and star(s) on Google play.
try a proper stock rom with en see if it happens.

I mean like they are used by everyone plus I have been using it for a year now. Never had a problem. I always use the apps that I have been using for a long time. Nothing new

Option 1>>>Open Catlog and press record and minimize it has it will start the log process. Use your phone normally and see anything happens.
Option 2>>>I would suggest you one thing flash any ROM best choose CM base ROM and flash gapps and reboot. Don't sign in to google just cancel the process and add it later from settings. Live it stock without loading any apps and see if it reboots for you.
Option 3>>>Might be a faulty motherboard don't know. Was the case when you brought the phone in the first place?

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it mate. I have clicked the thanks button
Once I got the phone it was working fine. I'm not sure about the power button too. I'm working on it to figure out whether it's the kernel or the ROM the power button.
You can try the following:
1. re-flash the samsung stock rom ....i would recommend you go with Official ICS Rom 4.0.4. Perform a clean data wipe, cache and dalvik cahe.
2. Do not use any other apps other than whats included in stock rom. Observe carefully for 2-3 days.
3. If all goes smooth, you can try installing well-known apps like facebook, whatsapp, etc etc
4. if you still have issue, i suggest you change your battery. Go for the official samsung battery only. Observe your phone's behavior.
Hope it helps you
HAve you ever tried to change the battery. I saw lots of Note batteries gone bad after 9-12 months. I could be the reason. Not sure though.

Dude you rock
it was a matter of time ....
Just updating to this now, will see how it goes
i've chosen not to wipe cache and apps etc, would a full wipe be recommended or will i be fine?
i ALWAYS do a fresh install including wiping everything because then it rules out having any problems in the future... once i do a full fresh install, i just redownload the apps and transfer the videos again OR leave all the stuff on the memory card as the memory card doesnt get touched while its flashing away lol
now whit android 4.3 (.569) i have one interesting problem -whit games specialy NOVA 3 after playing a while the deveise is restarting ....with android 4.1.2 i don't have these problem ....any solution ?

I have been using this rom since it got posted, my wifi with it is terrible though, it drops loads, could it be the fw in any way or is it the tablet it's self?
i know the issue isn't the wifi it's self because my phone is also connected and when my tablet's wifi drops my phone is always still connected and i can still view web sites etc..
Any suggestions?
i have not yet experienced any wifi issues :S... im not sure what it could be unfortunately, try a full wipe flash

I can confirm there is wifi issues but not just on this FTF, I used your file to get to stock from cm11 (which had no wifi issues for me) I then relocked bootloader and used sonys tool to fully reinstall the latest firmware. In both instances of official ROM I had random wifi hang ups, not so much full disconnection but it did happen once randomly.
Point is, its nothing to worry about on your part its just a problem with official in general.
