How to change the alert for calendar event?

How it is possible to set my own melody as an alert for calendar events? It should be in the list of available calendars, but how to mark them to be able to get into the menu. It is not possible to get there without hardware keyboard/touchpad/trackball. Is there any solution?

I'm frustrated with the Samsung Galaxy S' calendar. My important appointments make a little low *blip* sound and that's about it. I tried to use Calendar Snooze, but I can't get it to work. Apparently you should be able to select snooze option from calendar, but no such option is available on my phone. Changing the sounds in the phone settings makes no difference. Any ultra mega hacker who knows how to take control over the calendar notifications?

Are the two of us the only ones needing this function?

Same problem on T-Mobile Vibrant
I just got a Vibrant (T-Mobile's Galaxy S) the other day and have the same problem. There is no way to change the calendar alert tone on this device. It doesn't even use the default notification tone. It uses its own, but cannot be changed. It seems like maybe an oversight in the program which may have been developed with the assumption that all android devices would have a trackball. I was able to change it on my old G1, but not on the Vibrant.
Hopefully with all the Galaxy S devices being released this week across many carriers here in the US, more people will complain and this will be fixed soon.

Custom Calender Alarm needed on Vibrant
I need to be able to set up a distinctive ring/alarm for my calendar events so I can tell by sound when I need to get to another appt.
The G1 had a excellent customizable calender reminder, and I could set more than one reminder for each event. I am used to relying on my phone to remind be when to "head out'. The Vibrant has failed miserably and I have already been late once. This is a HUGE oversight for such a great phone..
3rd party developers - PLEASE work on a customizable calendar multi-reminder system that integrates with the calendar program for the Vibrant.

For rooted phone, u can replace 22_on_time.ogg to other audio file u want (with same file name), 22_on_time.ogg is the audio played by calendar notification. This file located at /system/media/audio/notifications

Works perfectly for me, thank your for this tip! Finally I can use calendar instead of alarm.

What program can we use to delete and copy over the new file? My phones rooted (still feels funny to say that!) and I use astro as a file manager, but it comes up with an error trying to delete file. Is there something better to use on a rooted phone?
Edit: I'm trying android mate, and it's been given su permission, but while it says the file transfer has been successful the file still doesn't appear in the folder! I'm lost (nothing new).

I did this, but now I don't get any sound when I am supposed to........
Is it any restrictions on how big the new file can be?

1. something wrong with format of your .ogg
2. you cannot replace the ringtone in ringtones it needs to be in the notifications folder. I took the default samsung ogg and copied it to the notification folder and then renamed to 22_On_time.ogg (case sensitive) and it works fine and plays the tone very very loudly.. better than nothing anyway.. someone needs to write an app to change it and convert .mp3 to this..
the default samsung song is 40 or so seconds so much better then the few second default tone. and much louder.

I took a ringtone from the ringtones folder, renamed it 22_on_time.ogg and placed it into the notifications folder. After rebooting it did not play 22_on_time.ogg, it played a random file from my sd cards media folder.
However, I just noticed in your post you said it was case sensitive. That may be my problem. I will give it another shot.
*EDIT* The case of the file name was indeed my problem. I had a lower case O.

I know this is an old thread but I had this issue this evening and wanted to contribute what I had to do to fix it.
I had replaced the 22_On_time.ogg file with my own and the proper case sensitivity was adhered to, however, it would still play a random mp3 from the internal SD storage. I tried replacing it with the original and it didn't work (before I realized that a reboot was necessary, so that may be why it didn't work) and fought with it for a couple of hours this evening. In the end, it was fixed after I did the following things:
1) I opened the original OGG in a sound editing app named GoldWave, the audio config for the original was Vorbis, 44100KHz, 128Kbps. For some reason, GoldWave wouldn't let me save my OGG file to this configuration, closest I had was 120Kbps. I copied my audio, pasted it over the original audio and then did a Save-As and GoldWave allowed me to save the "original" to the original's native 128Kbps.
2) When I moved it to the /system/media/audio/notifications location, I first deleted the 22_On_time.ogg file that I'd placed in there from previous attempts so that there was no file whatsoever; rebooted the phone, then moved the ogg file to the proper location, rebooted again and it worked fine after that.
I have no idea what the actual fix was but just wanted to share my findings. Those were the last 2 steps I did before it worked so I'm attributing my success to one of those steps.
Additionally, the weirdest thing I observed was, prior to the steps that ultimately resolved the issue, if I had the phone hooked up via USB, debugging mode w/the SD cards mounted, it played the custom 22_On_time.ogg file. If any of those things was different it would keep playing the mp3 from my internal SD card. I have no idea why.
Hope this helps someone at some point down the road.

This is no longer an issue as you can change the calendar tone in Froyo in the calendar options.

Tried the Nudnik app but, come on Google every phone on the market has nagging calendar alert, i don`t see why i have to pay for an app to enable repeating alerts.
This is how I did it:
I have a rooted Galaxy S with Darky`s ROM, BTW great ROM.
I opened a mp3 in Audacity audio editor and exported it as OGG without changing any settings like bit rate.
Copied the ogg to my internal SD and using Root explorer i switched the file system to R/W (read.write) so i can move the file to the file into the /system/media/audio/notifications folder. Renamed the 22_On_time.ogg file to 22_On_time1.ogg and then renamed my ogg file to 22_On_time.ogg (case sensitive name). Switched file system back to R/O (read only) and voila at last a real calendar notifier

thank you very much.now i can change the sound any time i want!!!

I am using the SVHD v1.5.2 ROM on my HTC Inspire. All my notifications are in MP3 format. I downloaded Root Browser Lite from the Google app store. I just used that to copy MP3 files from my sd card to /system/media/audio/notifications folder. Then I rebooted my phone and now I can set them or calendar and any other system sound notification. Just remember the space on the system folder is limited to around 85MB, it may verify with your phone so just make sure you have enough space.

I navigated to that folder but I don't see 22_on_time.ogg. I see many others such as Adara.ogg, Aldebaran.ogg, ect.

[Q] Various questions

Hello everyone, I'm new to XDA, and also new to Android, I've got my note since a few weeks.
I got some questions/problems, and I hope that we can solve them.
1. Skype
1a When video chatting over Skype, I only see myself just for a few seconds, and then the screen (Not the actual screen, but the small window that shows you) goes black. Is this normal? Or is there a way to fix this.
1b When video chatting with someone, the person can't hear me, is this normal(No the mic. isn't on mute) or do I need to use the/a headset. That would be weird since the phone has his own mic.
2. Wifi
When connected to a wireless network you can still see that the phone is scanning for wireless networks, I find that quite useless, since you're already connected to one. Is there a way to turn it off(the searching) I think that it might actually save some battery.
(What I'm talking about happens at: Settings > Wireless and Network > Wifi settings> In the "Wifi networks" bar it says scanning every second or so.
3. Poweramp(purchased)
3a I purchased a 32 GB SDHC card class 10 card from Samsung and I used it for some days, until I found out that we can also use a 64GB card, so I bought that one. But now the thing is that when I browse my music through Poweramp I still see the files that were on my 32GB card.(But of course they won't play.) When I create a playlist, these "Ghost" files are also included, and when a "ghost" file is about to play Poweramp gives me an error that the folder can't be found and then Poweramp stops playing.
3b Sometimes a song plays and suddenly Poweramp skips to another song without the previous song reaching it's end. This ALSO happens when the screen is OFF. Anyone else got this issue?
I got some other minor problems but I can live with those, so I won't mention them.

4. Ringtones
Is there a way to get custom ringtones per contact without installing additional programs?
At the moment I got RingoLite, but sometimes it just resets the contacts ringtone to default.
I'd prefer to set custom ringtones without additional programs of course.
I did look on Google for an answer, but I only found a way to do it at older Android versions.
Contacts > select the specific contact, then options, but there is no such thing anymore. Unless I'm just blind...

5. Customizing
Since yesterday I got ICS stock, I was able to get it with the help of Check Fus.
Now that I have ICS I decided to root my phone. I used this topic to root:

Now I want to do some more customizations, like change the battery indicator in the status bar. I found out that I can do that and many other thing with
UOT Kitchen. But I'm a bit stuck using UOT Kitchen. I have chosen all the mods at the Kitchen website, but at "File upload", I don't know what files I should upload, since it only says what files to upload when you have
Froyo/Gingerbread. So now that I have ICS will this even work? And if it does. What files do I have to upload?
The other question is: at some mods you have to choose screen size, which one do I have to choose for the Note?
At "File upload" (Kitchen website) I have chosen/left the "flashing folders for system files" on /system/framework and /system/app (For framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk) are these paths still correct for ICS?
@ Status bar mod, what screen size do I have to choose and does the transparency work in ICS (Even though it says Gingerbread only) .
I guess that's for it now, I will edit if I forgot a question.

1. skype
it sounds like you have either limited bandwidth or struggling to maintain a connection... yes you should see your cam and yes folks should hear you without the use of headsets.
2. wifi
I am not sure how you are verifying your statement?. If you are looking at settings>wireless>wifi settings, the Note will obviously scan while it is on this page.. I suspect that it does not do so otherwise while a connection is active.
3. Poweramp.
I do not have poweramp, but you should be able to go into settings>applications>running services and clear the data/cache for poweramp.

just open your contact and theres an option to assign a ringtone

Rfresh the library in power amp.. This should solve the problem.

Uhm I really don't see it.
When I select a contact, and I go to the options, I see: Edit, Delete, send name card edd to reject list, print name card.
I was able to fix the Ghost files issue in Poweramp by removing the sd card. And then deleting the Ghost files.
It surprised me that I never thought of that before.

Aaah now I see...
Now I know why I didn't saw it. The options only show up for some reason if the person also have Skype.
The contacts that I want to give another ringtone, don't have Skype, so those options don't show up.

Just got my wife a Lumia 520 and i noticed it does not have a file manager... is this normal?
I'm used to have file manager on Android so this is quite lame...

So... the Internet has these things called "search engines" which you can use to find all manner of cool things. You should really try using one of them.
1: Yes, it's normal that there is no file manager built into WP8. There wasn't one in WP7, either. This is not news. Know what you're buying...
2: There are apps (both on the Store and on this forum) which add very limited file browsing and management capability. However, the OS is extremely restrictive of app permissions - moreso than your typical Android build - so most of the filesystem is unreadable and all but a tiny portion of what's left is read-only.
3: Did you even read the little info sheet that comes with your phone? You would save us all a bunch of time if you did. Connect the phone to your computer using USB. It will appear as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device. You can use this to copy media files (including songs and ringtones) to the phone, as well as copying other media files (such as pictures or video you took) from the phone to the PC. If you're running Windows, it will also offer to install an app to make synching easier. Pretty much every OS has tools for working with MTP devices, including all desktop-oriented Linux distros I've ever tried.

Think of the apps as the file browser. An app that can manipulate a certain file type will show you all of that type of file on your phone. Coming from android you will have to rework your way of using your phone. And SKY DRIVE is your friend. And I'm glad you posted your question because I for one have used and love wp8 although I use my note 2 as my daily. I love people that say search for the answer yet give a long drawn out sarcastic answer anyway.
1.No file browser.
2.Use apps for manipulation of said files
3.Sky drive is your friend. It COULD be said it's wp8s file manager.

You can hook your phone to your PC and use the Windows Phone app for desk top, this will let you browse your files as far as music, ringtones, pictures and videos; I'm not sure if it includes documents but it the closest to what you are looking for because system files are off limit like the guys just explained.
What I don't understand is if you can view your files from your PC why can you do the same from the phone? Oh well maybe one day like in an update; this would be cool for browsing for files on your SD card...

Ok so i appreciated the help but i don't really explain well in the OP.
I apologize for the way i wrote the OP, i was frustrated after unsuccessful search for a way to work around the limitations of the OS...
I did not know that the WP7 and 8 did not add an file manager, but the other part i did know :/ so no need to be so sarcastic in your reply (last time a used a Windows based phone it add windows mobile and it did have file explorer much like other OS's).
What i really meant was if anyone knows a way to work around the OS locks on the file system and of course an file explorer that uses it... But after more search i find none

Yeah, that exact question has been asked before. People are working on it. Part of the reason I wrote my webserver app was to facilitate deeper exploration of WP8 in the hopes of finding a way to unlock more permissions. So far, no dice. The OS is still young, however.
With that said, from a "what can I do with it" perspective, it's best to think of WP8 as being like iOS: until or unless "jailbroken", everything runs with extremely low permissions.

Ok thanks for the info .
After some research i got the idea that WP8 as worst than iOS in terms of restrictions :/...
Thats really a shame because this Lumia 520 hardware its really nice for the price. It will be awesome wen someone is able to root it.
Still i will keep using Android on my personal phone... (this one was bought for my wife).

So far i can't move files (wma and MP3) to the inner folders on the ringtone folder... and the custom ringtone option does not let me chose other files than the one it came from factory
Not really a big bummer but it just seems a stupid limitation...

"Inner folders"? I just dragged files to Phone\Ringtones and they appeared at the top of the list, under "Custom". I didn't even need to resize them or change the genre, as WP7 required.

Well i tried every folder on the phone (that are available to the user) and the OS still does not let me choose custom musics for ringtones... :/

Music files should go into the music folder and ringtone files go into the ringtone folder, this is what I did; I put in an SD card and created Folders on it with the same name as the ones on the internal storage and placed all my music and ringtone files there, when you go to ringtones it shows up under custom, if your talking about alert tones for MMS or SMS then you are out of luck other than ringtones the only thing you can change is your alarm tones.
This is a big mistake by MS by not allowing users to use customer tones form email and SMS or MMS their are customers that are actually returning their phones and exchanging them for Android and even iPhones because of this and other limitations. Users have been asking for this since 2011 on MS's very own suggestion page (check it out here) and MS hasn't even responded or given a hit to fixing this issue.
For you guys who know me well and see that I bring this subject up a lot, I apologize but MS needs to wake up and stop trying to restrict even the simplest of tasks.

1. Connect the phone via USB. An MTP device, with the phone's name, will appear (for example, in Windows Explorer).
2. Open the phone device. You will see a "drive" called "Phone". There may be a second volume called "SD card".
3. Open the Phone volume. You will see the following folders: Documents, Music, Pictures, Ringtones, Video.
4. Open the Rintones folder. It should not have any sub-folders.
5. Copy the music you want to use, as MP3 or DRM-free WMA (I think DRM-free AAC/M4A also works), into this folder.
6. On the phone, go to Settings, then Ringtones+Sounds, and tap on the box under Ringtone.
7. Scroll to the top of the list. There will be a header "Custom", under which the music you added to the Ringtones folder will be listed (by title metadata, not file name).
8. Tap the Play icon beside a song if you want to see how it sounds as a ringtone, then tap the song you want to use as your ringtone.
If this doesn't work, be very, very specific about what step looks wrong (i.e. is not as described) and what you see instead. Also, be specific about the kind of music you're trying to use. I have tested using 128Kbps (constant bit rate) stereo 44.1KHz MP3 and WMA files of up to about 4:40 long.

Yep did all that ...
The only thing i did not try yet is to create a subfolder in the Ringtones folder like i've read somewhere... i will try to do all the processes again and try other tips and i will post my results as soon as i can.

8. Tap the Play icon beside a song if you want to see how it sounds as a ringtone, then tap the song you want to use as your ringtone.
If this doesn't work, be very, very specific about what step looks wrong (i.e. is not as described) and what you see instead. Also, be specific about the kind of music you're trying to use. I have tested using 128Kbps (constant bit rate) stereo 44.1KHz MP3 and WMA files of up to about 4:40 long.

Finally i got it to work...
Like i've said i've done the above (like you suggested) the 1st time and repeated and nothing happen.. so i reset the phone!
Copied just one file to the ringtone folder and success it worked (!). I don't know why it did not the other times ... Now my wife can copy her musics and put hers ringtones as she like.
Here is my device info in case its usefull for anyone:

OS is young and the questions you posted, really needs to be solved. MS has put too much restrictions in OS but I think it will open some APIs and remove some restrictions in WP blue update due in early 2014. I only need limited file explorer to manage my personal files, a good Music & Video app(VLC is coming) and a notification center, that's it. All would be well for me to jump the ship from Android.
Btw, try Kirik file browser. It gives you some limited accessibilities on SD card.

I completely agree. MS still as lot to do on this OS... But for people who don't need more computing options its a good choice (i think i like it better than iOS...).

So far besides the OS limitations my biggest disappointment is the store... there is not enough programs to satisfy my needs :/ But like i stated before i'm happy with the device (actually my wife is lol since its her that uses it).
Switching from Android... hmm no. I don't see myself switch to WP or iOS (btw i have iPod touch 4th gen) for so many reasons, but to start the integration with my Google account and services.
I had a Qtek back in 2k3 (actually was a job phone) and used Windows Mobile (or was it CE?? cant remember) and back then i love it. But the "updated" Windows OS for mobile does not give me the same experience. Android so far is my favorite (gonna give a try to Ubuntu touch since i use Ubuntu at work... lets see how it performs).

The whole thing is that WP8 is designed to protected installed apps _from other installed apps_. Any data an app writes, is completely off limits to any other application. So a file manager would be compeltely pointless. If someone would create one, you could create files and maybe even download files in the folders you created.... but no other app would ever see that data.
this makes programs that can download data (Windows File sharing, FTP clients, etc..) to be played by another program (music player, video player, etc..) impossible.
I do agree though that WP8 needs to create a single 'unmanaged, unprotected data pool' where all apps can write / read, probably organized by folders just so people understand it.
If an app then wants to write data there, it knows it got no protection and is on its own. But if an app wants to write personal data (appointments, messages, contacts, that kinda of thing) it can write it in it's own data store like WP8 is now and the data is protected from every other possible app.
If they will do this for Blue... I don't know. I haven't seen it on a list anywhere yet.

Well, you can ask the OS to open a file (the equivalent of ShellExecute on Win32) and that can be used as a form of inter-app communication and file passing (sending a file from a file browser to the media player is possible, for example). The trick is that it's a blind push; there's no way to ask for the file back, or query what files there are. Also, the other app needs to choose to download the file.
There are Capabilities in the WP8 security policies which could be used to make a decent file browser, at least for the basic stuff (media libraries, documents, a "common area" on the file system, etc.). However, we cannot currently sideload any application which uses them, and I very much doubt MS would let us publish such an app through the store (although it might be worth trying...)

I am fairly certain the current situation will probably change with WP8.1.
if wpdev voice website is an indication of their intentions for wp8.1, things will look very nice soon enough.

[SOLVED] Note 5 Photos, Ringtone MP3 disappear. And unable to set as Rgintone

Two issues with my new Note 5.
1. When I copied my mp3 ringtone file to storage/sdcard0/ringtone it worked for one day, then failed. Tried to convert to wma, ogg, mp3, the program said, "unable to set as ringtone"
2. I copied the photos from the old phone to storage/sdcard0/dcim, but the new gallery can't find them. Any solution on this?
3. Actually mp3 files disappeared too.
5.1.1 no longer have the option to select where to store your photos, any work around, or should i use third camera and gallery app?

If you simply use a file exploer and go to Storage/DCIM you will have your photos in the correct place.
If you are using an apk like Root Explorer just go to SDCard/DCIM - (there is no SDCard0 that I know of. (unless you are trying to create a new folder there) Just put the new folder directly in SDCard directory and you should not have any issues. I have lots of personal photos and special ringtones I copied to the phone adn they all work fine. By the way, when I transfer audio files to any of my phones, it always asks me if I want to convert the file to a diffeent format - says if I don't it may not play correctly - I never do that - and they always work fine.

thanks Mocsab. Unfortunately, i tried, been using andriod phones for 4 years, this is the only time i felt this no longer an android product. The permission setting and other restriction make it an iOS duplicate.
Going back to my issues, it was still resolve.

I understand - I am not sure why are having the issues you described - they didn't happen for me - and personally, i think this is one of the best Android Phones I have ever used. Love it,

yeah, now that i have my data pretty much transferred, maybe i should do a full back up and reset to factory setting. Not able to change the ringtone i've using for 10 years really bother me.....

Ok, i did a factory reset and start from scratch. I was able to setup a custom ringtone by putting the file in the same ringtone directory, and copied the photos to the DCIM folder. It actually worked for 10 hours. 10 hours later, when i deleted a whatsapp images from the Gallery app, the entire photos collections as well as my ringtone were gone, ringtone back to default setting. I think this is a bug, if anyone experience this, please share your experience.

ok, read another forum and found a solution to change the ringtone file name to ring.mp3 and amusingly, the file show up on the list of ringtone and it works.
now the bug on why photos and music disappear still unsolved.

try to see if you have a .nomedia file on your storage card root directory.
what happen to my case was, i found a .nomedia in the storage card root "/sdcard/ .nomedia" so all medias were omitted.
Now that i have deleted the file, my mp3 player work correctly.

Custom Ringtones and Notification Sounds

So I am trying to change my ringtone and notifications. First of all I don't want google Play music to find the music files when it is searching for files. Also I was wondering if there is a specific folder to place the files in. Because i normally just use a file explorer to choose it, but currently it is telling me its the wrong file type and its an mp3. I have the .nomedia file in the folder so that music apps wont load those files. I am wondering because by putting the files in the Ringtones folder they seem to load though the standard choosing method but all the other notifications dont seem to work that way if they are in the notification folder. Does it need to be media/Notifications?

I had the same question.. I found a YouTube video called setting custom notification sounds (just add /watch?v=q5K4zDbOJGo to the normal YouTube URL), and it explains how to do it.
Basically, you need a Media folder on your device, and a Notifications folder inside it. Once you've created them (if they don't exist) Just place your sound files in the Media/Notifications subfolder.

The Notifications folder can be right on the root, it does not have to be in the Media folder. That's where I copied my ringtones and notification sounds, and they show up as select-able now.

Using the "my files" app on the Sammy,
I copied whatever sounds i wanted to use from wherever they were direct to the notifications folder that's already in the device. I did not need to make any additional folders. T-Mobile variant.

? Doesent work for me (SM-N950F).
I can see the mp3 but it keeps the standard ringtone.

For ringtones scroll to bottom of list, you will see add from phone, you can use the built in sound picker app or a compatible file explorer app then just navigate to relevant location
Edit: forgot to mention there's a size and length limitation, forgot exactly but something like under 1:30mins (maybe shorter) and 2mb if I recall

solution:
in note 8 the dir for custom notifications was changed from previously
internal-storage/media/notifications to internal-storage/notifications
just put any mp3 or other sound file to this dir and you will be able to find it in notification picker on any app

I also found the "UI" sounds and "Pen" sounds - but I cannot figure out where I should place these.

But I am not sure where to copy system UI sounds and Pen sounds.

Any help on how to make a "refresh" without wiping all data would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be able to see the stock notifications, ringtones, & system UI without root. Some 3rd party file explorers may let you see them though. They are in system/media/audio.
If you create new folders in your storage & add stock sounds you may see duplicates in the list of sounds when you go to select them to assign them.
As for UI sounds & pen sounds, you can not change them them without root. And to change them you would have to replace the sound file with the one you want renamed with the same file name. I think there was an app that allowed you to change pen sounds for older Notes, not sure if it works on the Note 8 though.

That I do not know, I use Root Explorer but I am rooted, not sure if it shows without root. Maybe try ES File Explorer? I have that on my Amazon Fire TV that is not rooted & I can see some system folders/files but not the data folder.

I copied notifications over to my phone and they weren't immediately available for selection. After a restart I was able to select the newly installed notifications.
Just adding this info for the benefit of anyone who is trying to install new ringtones. If you don't see them right away try restarting your phone.

Different ringtones for default and messages
I cannot get the default notification sound to be different from my message notification sounds. If I change the message notification sound it automatically Changes the default notification sound and vice versa. Can these be different sounds?
