[Q] How to install app and game (.XAP) to windows phone 8 - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just download windows phone application and game (*.XAP) from some website, but how to install it to my Nokia Lumia 920?
anyone know please help
regards,
dane

If you downloaded it from windowsphone.com, you can't install it because you need a MicroSD slot....
If you downloaded it from a "questionable" site, this is not a place to talk about it but, you need a dev unlocked phone and install the dev kit (needs Windows 8) to be able to install it..
Talking about pirated software here is a good way to get yourself banned so watch it.

You can't. I have a HTC 8X and I am in the same boat as you with No MicroSD slot. I can not do it. This was something set by Microsoft, installing of XAP files can only be done via MicroSD cards and I checked, there is NO way to install XAPs with out a MicroSD card.
Sorry but, like me, you can't. The only way to install a XAP file on a Lumia 920 or HTC 8X (a WP8 device with no MicroSD slot) is a Unlocked phone with the Dev kit and that would only be for self made or unencrypted XAP files.
You can download all you want fromt the Marketplace but, you wont be able to do anything with them.
Yea, I agree, it's crappy...why should we lose out of that feature but, this was set by Microsoft...

thanks again!! DavidinCT,
"the only way to install a XAP file on a Lumia 920 is a Unlocked phone with the Dev kit", could you show me to do it?
it was hard to download the big game from the phone, it seem like the "resume" of windowsphone doesn't work properly.
thanks,

You can't install XAP-Files downloaded from the Store using a developer unlock. They get encrypted when being put into the Store and developer deployment only works with XAP files that are unencrypted (which you get when building Apps yourself).
So basically: you can only download from the PC and install using a SD Card. Or download and install directly on the phone. Everything else only works for Homebrew Software or for stuff you have developed yourself.

Y'all telling me that if I get my hands on a Developer Edition Lumia 920 I can install XAPs via the Windows Phone SDK's Application Deployment for Windows Phone 8? I use the hell out of that on my HD2 and Titan (HSPL).

@berrywr: There's no such thing as a "Developer Edition" Lumia 920 (or any other phone) that I'm aware of; it's just a matter of using the official Developer Unlock feature on Windows Phone (which is done using the "Windows Phone Developer Registration" utility installed with the SDK, but requires having a developer account with Microsoft, sometimes called an AppHub account). Once you have the phone dev-unlocked, you can install .XAPs using Application Deployment, yes.
However, bear in mind that the vast majority of WP7 homebrew is completely non-functional on WP8. The internals of the OS are too different. WP8 is even more locked down than WP7 (much, much more locked down than on a custom ROM such as the HD2 uses to run WP7) and we haven't broken that yet.

@GoodDayToDie This is why I like to take my time before jumping all in with a new smart phone; homework! Is the Windows Phone Development Center the same entity as what use to be the AppHub? I see from their website they're offering an annual subscription to WPDC for $19 until August 27, 2013. My memory serves me correct it use to be $99 unless you had a student (.edu) email address which I do coincidentally have...was for Windows Phone 7.x Since my Titans are HSPL I never had a need for it. So what is being advertised around the web as a Developer Edition is not necessarily bootloader unlocked it simply means pentaband or for example you can go to a Canadagsm.ca and get the same thing for about $400 US; yes? Thanks!

I have a Lumia 720 ....it has SD card option....so can anyone tell me how to install apps from SD card ??
Sent from my HTC Explorer A310e using xda app-developers app

@berrywr: You're correct. The $19 account will get you a 1-year Dev Center account (same as AppHub) and that will allow you to dev-unlock your phone and sideload XAPs. You can certainly try using the school account, and it may work and save money, but historically school accounts were relatively locked down by comparison (maximum of three sideloaded apps at once, which was relaxed but nore removed for paid accounts).

I'm in the same boat, I have removable SD card and I cant install apps off it on my Nokia.

@orbitalschool: Did you even read the post you claim to be "in the same boat" as? I don't think you did, because if you *have* a microSD slot, then you are explicitly *not* in DavidinCT's boat.
In any case, the "install apps from SD card" is for marketplace apps that you downloaded using a PC, to save phone bandwidth. Nothing more, nothing less (well, It might work for enterprise apps too, but you can just email those to yourself or send them via Bluetooth). You still need a valid license to install apps that way, too. Homebrew apps can be installed using the dev tools. Pirated apps can't be installed at all, generally speaking, though that (and the fact that asking about it is against the forum rules) hasn't stopped people from complaining that it's not working...

The Apps, I downloaded manually from Microsoft site. Put them on the SD card. I re-factory set the phone, as wp8 started downloading my hotmail emails and I didn't know how to uninstall or turn that function off. Every question is easy if you know the answer, I had no idea you could send apps to the phone via bluetooth, thanks for the info.
Its all irrelevant now, I put two tutorial.avi videos on the SD card. Phone wouldn't play them, I'm sure more knowledgeable people could easily rectify this, I tried a SD avi player app but couldn't get that to work, I must admit I really liked the Nokia 820, butter smooth and looks and feels great...Its just been repacked as I'm sending it back. Such a shame as I can do everything I want on my HTC wm6.5....so wp8 for me is going backwards.

Let me adjust me tin hat, my frustrations as a not very technology minded person; I just want things to flow. I don’t want to feel everything I do is governed by big business. On my wm device, select file explorer, find app, install and watch avi. WP8…???

Here is the legal way to do this

Android File Manager

Its out now, anyone seen it yet?
This should help out a lot...hopefully next we can move apps to the mem. card.
just found that you can view the app data by going to system and then to apps.
you think if we were to make a app folder on the mem. card they would run? im going to play around and see what happens
well the manager at the moment only lets you view the files. I have tired multiple times to cut and paste program files onto the mem. card but with no luck. possibly the second file manager program will have all of the bugs out of it.
but....
do you think if we had a system/app file on our mem. card the phone would pull the apps off of our card? just trying to get things rolling here so we can get everything FINALLY on our cards and stop wasting all of our phone memory.
THANKS
I don't think so... but could be wrong. I noticed the card only has "media" folders nothing yet is stored on the card really.
ya i noticed that as well....hopefully this is a step in the right direction. once we can actually view ALL files and are able to move things around then things should start to get interesting.
what if we were to somehow make a shortcut to tell the phone where the app is? so only the command to the app on the memory car would be on the phone. it would be a VERY small size file on the phone compared to the entire app...think this may work?
I doubt we can ever be able to move or view all files. Google set it up so our version is locked down and no one can get root access.

True words. Sometimes I think that openness and mobile operators are two incompatible things. You should be watching the presentation of G1 organized by T-Mobile. All was going good until the audience was able to ask questions. The questions were about operator restrictions on the device and locking. The general mood of the presentation went down after it...
With the source code available, can't the developers just compile a new version of the software to run on the G1 which is not locked by the operator/carrier?
Don't know much about developing but just wondering what it is that really stands in the way?

A good developer that knows what he/she is doing is what is standing in our way. This is all new so it will take time for developers to first look at the code and start building. And more time to perfect their talents on this new device and OS.
I'll give props to this program for it's functionality that should have been native.
At work I had a customer who had a bad version of a ringtone he made with Ringdoid and needed to delete. Aside from refer him to edit the SD via USB (which I cannot even do yet w/o swapping devices).
I had him d/l the Android File Manager and use that to locate and delete. Made it easy and only took 2 mins d/l time included.
Based on the good start, this might become the default file manager I use once more options become available within it. (especially the open ability - and a select all would be nice).

now you can only do official developer unlock (for $19 per year or free via student Dreamspark account).. no jailbreaks or interop unlocks...
but also dont forget, for unlocking device and sideload xap files from PC to WP8 device you need to install WP SDK 8 which can installed to Windows 8/8.1 x64 (x86 not supported)
also you can wait when some youtube players be temporally free... check with Store Deals app...
or try this app

Dev-unlock is free, now, though you're limited to two sideloaded apps at a time. The $20 account will bump that limit to ten, or the free student account to just three. Download the SDK and run the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool, then use the Application Deployment tool.
Oh, and for <REDACTED> sake, USE THE <REDACTED> SEARCH TOOL! This has been asked so ridiculously many times... and it's not even anything particular to this forum; you can find the instructions right from Microsoft!

What's interesting is that I have a limit of 10 apps, as a student. The thing is my school isn't dreamspark enabled neither do we have a .edu address, so I sent them my ID and they activated it, with a limit of 10 apps.
Huh, that is interesting. If you had to follow any unusual steps to do that, it may be worth posting; otherwise, thanks for the tip!

[Q] How To Download Apps Higher Than 50 MB in My windows phone???

how to downloada app higher than 50 MB in phone without wi fi connection????
my phone is lumia 720. I have no wi fi connection, so i can't able to download the games like Six Guns from the store.
is there any way to download the app in uc browser and install manually in windows phone. I downloaded the app google.xap from windowsphone.com app and games section in uc browser. But when i try to install the file it shows a error.
First point: stop using all bold. It's just kind of annoying.
Second point. it's up to your carrier. Overriding that setting is currently not possible on Nokia WP8 devices.
Third point: If you phone has a microSD card (I forget whether the Lumia 720 supports one or not), then yes, there is a way. Download the app (on your PC) from the Windows Phone Apps + Games website. It will be a .XAP file (don't bother trying to open it; it's encrypted using PlayReady DRM). Put that file on the microSD card (either by removing the card from the phone and using a card-writer on your PC, or by attaching the phone over USB and writing to the SDCard "folder" using Windows Explorer). Then on the phone, open the Store. You should see an option of "SD Card", and you should be able to install the app from there. Note: this only works for store apps, and it still needs an Internet connection, but it works for large apps.

I know how install app from sd card.
just want to know how to download in mobile...
anyway thanx
You could try using a proxy server to override the maximum download over cellular data rule. The phone only checks that once a day though, I think, and it's checked in the background (you can't trigger it). Still, changing that value might do the trick.
I really can't imagine anywhere in the world where using that much cellular data costs less than going to somewhere with WiFi though, or even getting a WiFi adaptor for your PC.
Also, your phone *might* download via the PC's connection if you're connected over USB. WP7 would; I'm not sure if WP8 does or not. It still has a IP-over-USB connection, but the only thing I *know* it's used for is communicating with the Visual Studio debugger.

Would it be possible to Jailbreak a Lumia if you can deploy unlimited xap's ?

My question is if it is be possible to Jailbreak a Lumia if you can Deploy unlimited xap files to your phone.
I ask it because you can deploy unlimited xap files to your phone.
All you need is the latest WP 8.1 update and a phone with a sd card slot.
First you can Developer Unlock your Lumia phone to be able to deploy 10 xap files.
Deploy 10 apps to your phone. After that you can move your 10 sideloaded apps to the sd card with the storage check app.
After that remove your SD card from your phone and deploy other 10 apps to your phone.
Now you can insert your SD card and move the new installed 10 apps to the SD card.
After that you can reply this process again.
With this method it should be possible to deploy unlimited xap's to your phone.
Hope this will help the devs to Jailbreak a Lumia like the 1520.
Can deploy max 20 apps (10 on sd and 10 on phone)
then when i try to move phone apps to sd i got an error .
Sadly, no. The change we need to make for interop-unlock is tied to how many apps you can sideload, but it's not actually in any way related to sideloading apps. A way to bypass the restriction is potentially useful in general, but doesn't help in finding unlocks.
But what will happen if we deployed over 300 apps ?
... nothing special? My phone is interop-unlocked, but it's probably only got ~30 sideloaded apps on it right now.
You have cause and effect completely reversed. A fixed-wing powered craft capable of generating more lift than its own weight is an airplane even if it's sitting on the ground. A car that flies off of a cliff does not become an airplane just because it's (temporarily, due to extraordinary circumstances) flying. Just as it is the *capability* for powered and controlled flight that makes an airplane an airplane, it is the OS-level support for installing over 300 apps that makes a phone interop-unlocked.
I could sideload another thousand apps on my phone (well, if they weren't too big) and then modify the MaxUnsignedApp registry value back to 10... and my phone would have ~1030 unsigned apps installed but it would *NOT* be interop-unlocked.
I'm not sure why this is hard to understand. There has been at least one other discussion of this idea already. I'm not even going to bother berating people for not searching before posting; instead I'm going to berate you for being obtuse. What part of
The change we need to make for interop-unlock is tied to how many apps you can sideload, but it's not actually in any way related to sideloading apps.

[Q] maps to sd without interlop or nokia storage check

does anybody know how to do this?
Seems like Storage Sense on 8.1 should handle it, but I'm not sure if it actually does. On my 8.1 phone (HTC One M8 for Windows, or a "W8" as some people are calling it), apps were automatically downloaded to the SD card.

You can probably change the registry key yourself by hijacking an OEM app chamber. You obviously have an SD card, and I'm pretty sure the relevant registry value is meant to be set by the OEM, so it's going to be in a location writable with second-party capabilities.
