Battery life test proposal - Nexus 4 General

What if you want to compare your battery life with other people using the same Nexus 4. You can do a subjective assessment like the ones in this long tread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992627&highlight=battery . But every body uses their phone differently and have different programs installed.
I was thinking what could be a good test that complies with the following:
• Be Simple
• Be Repeatable
• Be Comparable between users
• Can spot hardware failure in the battery / charging system.
What do you think of this procedure
1. Backup your phone
2. Charge it 100% and keep it plugged
3. Take out your SIM
4. Do a factory reset (wipe/format)
5. Do the initial configuration skipping everything (no simcard, no wi-fi, no google account, no name)
6. Go to display settings and set brightness to maximum.
7. Turn off Wi-Fi
8. Shut down the phone
9. Disconnect it from the charging cord
10. Turn on your phone.
11. Click on the clock on the home screen and start the StopWatch.
12. The stopwatch screen will prevent the screen to turn off.
13. Wait for your phone to die and record the time it lasted
14. Share how long it lasted in this thread
This would be a synthetic test (does not resemble a real usage scenario) but also is comparable and repeatable because does not measeure a lot of variables or differences between set ups.
RESULTS:
First charge
Battery time 6h 02m
Here is a screen shot taken just before it died.

Second charge
Battery 5h 53m
And an screen shoot taken after charge it again and then turn it on
I can only explain that the in the second charge the battery lasted less because in the first charge I left the charger connected a couple of hours after it reach 100% but in the second charge I started the battery test the moment It showed reached 100%.

It just died at 6h02m. This is for the first charge of a new phone. I really don't know if this batteries have to be conditioned or not. I will ran the test again tomorrow.
Hopefully someone can replicate for the test to be useful.

6h with no use ?

I have gotten about 6 days standby, and at the end of the night my phone is at like 50-70% with moderate to heavy use. I am impressed, I don't see why everyone else is having problems

jeeeeeeeeeeeez... 6 hrs of stopwatch... doesn't mean NO USE
this is interesting though... I will keep reading this thread

All this means is how much time your screen can last with little to no use, factor in network,WiFi, and processor and that number halves

I generally get through the day with 60% juice left, and that's more than enough for me. I feel no need to compare with others since real life usage really varies greatly.

A day at work for me is 10hrs. When I'm at work I set my phone in my locker. When I'm on break I'm on it constantly reading reddit, xda, Facebook and Twitter. Usually get about 2 hrs sot using just data and leave work around 50% get back home and use wifi and get around 4.5hrs by the time I go to sleep and charge. With my old epic 4g touch I'd only get a max of 1.5hrs and that's while using airplane mode with my phone in my locker. I'm fine with how long this phone lasts...

Might try this when I get the time. I've tried a lot of different things and cant get more than 3 hours of screen time on a single charge. It Usually gets me through the day but not always.. standby seems to have improved with 4.2.2.. But when I read about all these people who get 5-6hrs of screen on time with similar usage I'm obviously going to feel like somethings wrong since I have the same phone.. So yeah, I'd like to see if on a standardized test we get the same battery.. then we can slowly narrow down other factors to figure out whats causing the difference.. Cause even with battery stats I dont know why mine isn't lasting as long as other peoples..

Comparing to my iPhone 4S
When downloading apps and browsing the web and stuff, I give the edge to the iPhone. I can stream Slacker Radio and browse the web for about 4-5 hours before hitting 20%. The Nexus only lasts me about 3 1/2 hours. Not a big deal.
Standby also goes to the iPhone. I can fall asleep at night and wake up with about 3-5% drain. The Nexus is about a 10% drain.
The Nexus wins at charge time though. I can fully charge it in less than an hour. The iPhone takes at least 1 1/2 hours.
The Nexus also wins with WiFi. I see no difference in battery drain when connected to WiFi or it turned off. The iPhone takes some noticeable drain when using WiFi.
I give the trophy to the iPhone. Although Android completely voids the inferior battery. Nexus > iPhone.

Yes I read OP, every single word. But what I'm saying is that if your battery life is great and is enough to last you a whole day, there's no need to check the battery life.

I have updated the original post with updated results.

Actually theres a great reason to check. If you can make it thru the day with a phone with a crapped out battery, that wont be an issue for you but it will be an issue for the next person who owns your phone. It matters because of the resale value of your phone. If you can get an rma that will benefit the next owner, then you should do it just so that it sells better in the future.
So you run the test and find out your phone is damaged on arrival even if you didnt notice at first, and you get it replaced.
It would be very interesting to find that everyone's battery lasts approx the same lol under this situation.
The only limitation of this method is that we do not take into account any leakage of a certain, a more or less efficient processor or modem on someones phone.

It is funny because this is actually why I crated this test. This phone is a RMA replacement of the one I had before with battery issues. It was a pain to know for sure if the problem of my previous Nexus were SW or HW related in this forum I only found subjective opinions on battery life. Nothing to compare and be 100% sure it was in fact a defective battery and not some misbehave app.
So at least I now have a base line to compare if some battery life problems arise again.
Waiting for someone else to run the test to see if results are similar in other nexus 4

So with just stop watch & screen on the phone is getting 6h total time ?

I'm not getting nearly the battery life that others are claiming.
I just calibrated my battery this time, so we'll see how it goes.
Please post a screen shot of your 'settings -> about phone -> battery usage' and click on display and tell us the 'time on' numbers.
I have about 2 hours of 'time on' time, and I've gone through a third of my battery. And I have very conservative screen settings. I don't see any way I could get the reported 9 hours of video time that Engadget reported.
I'm not complaining though - on my mytouch 4g, I could get probably 3-4 hours of screen time on a battery. Considering how powerful this phone is, and the size/resolution of the screen...... No real complaints.
- Frank
P.S. Can you imagine a hyperion extended battery? The stock mytouch 4g battery is 1400, and the hyperion extended is 3500. So a hyperion extended battery for the note would be ..... 6250 mah??!?!? [email protected] What we need is an ibm 'slice' type of battery - that wouldn't add much thickness.

I can't wait until ICS & devs start making ROMs & kernel for the Note. I think then, we will see the Note truly shine.

What kind of battery life test would satisfy you then?
For instance:
I have used a variety of phones over the last 6 months (BB Torch 9800, Torch 9810, BB Bold 9700, Bold 9900, Galaxy 7" Tab P1000, HTC WP7 Mozart) and none of these devices can deal with my pattern of usage every day without at LEAST 2 full depletions and recharges of the battery.
I'm looking to the Note to be the first phone that can last a day, or at LEAST a day with only one recharge.
Engadget reckoned they got 9 hours of video playback on one charge. I do hope that this is indicative of the notes performance...

I am a heavy user. The only battery test I want is if the batter has juice left in it when you are ready to go to bed. I have a 4G Infuse, the POS would die in 6 hours. So lame.

Your post doesn't tell how the battery life is good. The part that consume the most of the juice is the display and I can see from your post that the screen of your Note was awake just for a little time...
So, trying a browsing and video experience would give us a better idea

That's a known ROM/kernel bug in Gingerbread, with AOS taking up so much time. It will be fixed in custom ROMs - though who knows if Samsung will fix theirs ??
Battery tip, if you have NO SIM card in, "cell standby" will tear through your battery in no time. Put it in airplane mode, then enable wifi FTW.
I'm having the same problem. Really frustrating. Needing a recharge every 12 hours or so. And I'm not a heavy user :-/
Dear all,
Today I change a animate wallpaper to static, the result is good, my battery level after same hour, same use is much better.
Before, I full charge at nigh, start use the phone from 7am, web, email at cafe to 8am, have some phone call, email, and web again from 9pm to 11pm.
With animated wallpaper, at 11pm battery is 0, but today, its still at 50%, its good!

Animated wallpapers are battery death unless they are pseudo animations like that melting droid wallpaper which is effectively a giant battery meter. It's like playing a movie constantly.
When judging battery life, you should take in account that if you just have bought the device, you maybe are using it more than you will in the future. (I said maybe, don't jump at me )
I did... And I got 12 hrs or something.... I think that I will manage a good day with it in the future.
Of course the largest consumer of juice will be the screen... So, use a low brightness whenever you can.
And, I bought Juice Defender + from the Market, this seems a good investment and works fine on the Note. (Free version does too)
http://www.juicedefender.com/
I can live with a data connection that just every 15 minutes goes on to check mail etc.
(although some people complain when they don't hear from me within a minute )

Serious batttery issue, is this normal?

The battery on my Note is decent, giving me 2-3 days of moderate use or roughly a full day with heavy use.
Problem is when the battery decreases to around 40% & lower, the battery drains like anything even when not used.
Simply idling the phone would lose roughly 5-6% over an hour.
When the battery is around 20% it will easily run down to 10% and less over a period of a few hours when doing NOTHING.
Yet when then battery is at 80 & 90% it will lose around 5-6% battery over many hours.
Here is the proof, I took a screenshot of the battery information & you will clearly see rapid drops in battery life when at 50% and less.
On the last 20% it goes down even faster, and this is with NO use at all.
I hope this is fixed in ICS as it's a serious problem.

Pretty flat at the end there, even while being used.
I have seen that reported elsewhere, but not seen it on my own Note. I have just settled it into a new pattern after rooting and deleting the stats, so I am not certain right now, but I think it remains fairly even over the whole cycle.
I am not sure I could use is as little as you appear to have however!
I've yet to get my Note battery to last until 2 days, and not even a full 24 hours (almost heavy usage on data network).
So I guess that's good enough that yours lasted for almost 3 days!

Haha, don't get me wrong, I think the battery is great.
I'm only wondering why it goes so quickly when it's at 40% and under...
This seems odd. I'd say I'm having the same issue (the poor battery performance).
I've been trying to analyse this but don't have much time to do it right. From what I'm seeing the battery usage graph looks legit. Phone seems to enter deep sleep states. Nonetheless Note seems to drain the battery a lot faster in deep sleep than my Galaxy 3 does, which is odd considering Note having 3 times larger battery capacity.
What seems odd too is extremely slow suspend/resume cycles (e.g. the time it takes for the phone to turn the screen off/show lock screen). It takes more than a second on my Note to show the lock screen. I've seen other report this too. A friend of mine shocked a salesman on a Samsung booth lately when he showed him that. Galaxy S2 is thunderfast, while Galaxy Note takes ages to resume. My Galaxy 3 takes <0.5s. I've looked into the `dmesg` output for some hints. I'm no guru in this, but `ehci` seems to be taking some time to suspend/resume. This also converges with my other observation - Galaxy Note notoriously locks up when playing with usb host. I've tried couple of keyboard/mouse on usb - some of them do work, some of them don't (I can see 'Mouse/Keyboard' connected on the statusbar but there's no mouse pointer nor keyboard input is possible; after some time it's most likely to hard lock the system).
Thus I would suspect buggy usb host/otg hardware/driver that's leading to such a poor battery performance. But hey, maybe it's just me and my theories. Nevertheless something must be broken.

I just made a suggestion, that's all. I'm trying to help you save battery. If you want all the bells and whistles and want battery then going for the extended battery is your route. I don't think you will get much more from the standard.
I have had troubles with battery life since I bought this beauty. I have been trying several Roms and Kernels, and none seem to make much difference. I also tried selecting among governors but still no better luck.
When I have 20-24hrs battery life it is very good!
The only thing that allowed me to save some was to reduce lcd intensity, and use the Note in dark environments.
Maybe I am using it more than the average user, but with all the opportunities it provides, I can hardly refrain myself from using it.
My typical use is:
- Radio and surf when going to work and home,
- Email and surf every hour at work
- About 10-20mn phone calls
- Listening to music when I can be alone working (1-2 hrs each day)
- Tablet use when at home.
Do you consider this to be a very heavy usage of the phone ?
I have just had my Note for a few days. The biggest battery eater in my case is WiFi. If I switch it off, the discharge is quite acceptable (a couple of percent during the night). I am not deep into Android internals, but it seems my 5-year-old Palm TX had much better WiFi power management than my brand new Note!
BTW, I am on a stock ROM and have disabled auto-sync.
Have you tried wiping battery stats? Let the phone completely die then charge it without interruption until it's been on 100% for an hour then boot to CWM and wipe battery stats

I can complain. I paid $750 for it.
The bells and whistles are there but the battery can't cope. Major flaw in battery implementation.
I already told the other guy i appreciate his help but that defeats the purpose of such an advanced and sophisticated mobile phone.
I had a SE symbian for 3 years then several HTC WM 6 mobiles, then a year of HTC Desire then an iPhone 4 for 1.5 years. I'll head towards the best regardless of brand.
Quit being a fanboy.

I am not complaining about the battery drainage per-se.
My previous phone was a Nokia N900, which I used all day long for calls, mails, radio listening, ssh to my home computer, etc... and I knew well that I could not use it for more than a day without charging, sometimes even less.
The phone battery was never advertized as being able to cope with such usage, and only announced battery times for 2G/3G calls.
When I first read announcements about the N7000, I read that Samsung decided to increase the battery power to make it last 2 days, which looked nice to me.
Now I have hardly 13 hours of battery time with my usage (see my previous post) and I want to know:
- is it a normal behaviour for the phone?
- is there a way to make things better with the same hardware?
- do I really need to lower my expectations?
If the answer to the last question is yes, I will be of course disappointed but I can cope with it, as I did with my previous phones. As CorruptedSanity already mentioned, my only complains are to the Samsung techs (or advertizers) and not to any member of this forum who are usually able to help beyond my needs.
I hope that screen optimizations will come that will increase the battery life while I use the phone, but my expectations are low.
You can expect around 5 hrs of screen time based on peoples reports here

Yup, that's the killer IMO. I can leave WiFi enabled all day, or use the phone for a couple of hours of calls and a few hours of 'screen time'. Not both!
Before rooting and killing bloatware, I could do neither.

Battery Report Review - Pre OTA vs Post OTA Update

I picked up my Nexus 4 yesterday and got everything setup. The stats I posted are only from today, coming from fully charged. I have not updated to the latest OTA yet.
You will notice that after 9 hours, I still have 40% left.

A good portion (about 4 hours) of the day was spent inside a building that results in poor reception. As a result, there should've been more battery drain during that time. Also, I have wifi enabled almost the entire time.
The screen was on for almost 2 hours.
The Nexus 4 gets plenty of deep sleep.
Some notes about my activity. I listened to music through a bluetooth headset for about 20 minutes. I sent and received over a 100 text messages. Wifi was enabled and connected almost the entire time. Autosync for email, contacts, calendar, facebook, and twitter are enabled. I have Tasker running in the background. I played around on some social apps (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) and downloaded/updated a few apps.
This is probably light to moderate usage in my eyes and would easily get you through an 8-hour work day. Battery drain was between 5% and 7% per hour, depending on when during the day you calculated it. It usually averaged around 6% drain per hour though.
I'll probably take a few more screens of my stats tonight before updating to the OTA. I'll then report back tomorrow with similar screens to see if the OTA helps battery consumption at all.
EDIT: I have posted updated stats on page 5. These will include stats after the OTA update.
Thanks for this! With all the backorder emails going out I'm definitely going to wait a few weeks before I decide if I'm going to order one. If I do it will be hard to part with the 3100 mah battery in the Note 2. You can't kill this thing!

the only thing that's keeping my decision tough is that 3100 mAh battery.
based on the OP stats, it's doing a decent job. i think it can do a better with further updates to come from Google, i am just not sure since battery life on my G Nexus was horrible.
Ouch that is pretty ****ty battery life for a device you've hardly used. My GS2 would be on like 70% with what you've used....

Keep in mind it should get better after 4-5 cycles. It's certainly not groundbreaking but it's also nothing to sneeze at. With some monitoring you should have no problem making it through a day without charging. I don't like monitoring though, which is why I love this Note 2

That's actually not too bad. Like thegregulator said, it's decent and will get you through the day. Also, I think my battery drains more when signal is bad, and you will notice that I'm in an area with really bad signal for a good portion of my day.

Here are some updated usage shots by the end of my day. It averages out to about 7% consumption per hour, giving me about 14 hours worth of battery life.
I just updated to the OTA and will charge my phone overnight to give it a full charge and update this thread again tomorrow afternoon after another full day's usage.
I don't understand... I always thought 1-2.5 screen time was terrible for 14-18 hours. I get 3-4 in 24+... Hopefully battery will get betterbwith custom kernels, ROMs, and underclock.

I wouldn't say it is terrible battery life, but I would say there is room for improvement.
Again, keep in mind I experience a little more battery drain due to poor reception. I saw someone else post a screenshot reaching 18 hour battery life, with almost 3 hours of screen usage.
Hopefully, the OTA provides some better usage times. I'll report back again tomorrow afternoon.

This is really bad. I often reach 6 hours of screen on time on my GS2 with a 2000mAh battery.
I don't understand which part of the Phone is draining that much power,
IPS panels are usually pretty efficient, the S4pro if not pushed should not drain that much either.
The only reason I can think of is that the CPU is spending too much time at the max clockrate with multiple cores online.
Can someone post a screenshot of CPU spy?
I would be interested to see what the battery life is like in airplane mode over a few hour period. One with the screen off (more than likely in deep sleep), the other with the screen on. If the problem is in the jelly bean kernel that can be fixed on xda. If it is the screen draw that is a little different. I have full faith in the developers on xda.
sent from my perfect 32GB Nexus 7
My gut says that the kernel could have used a couple months more cooking time. The hardware is way too efficient for these performances.

You did, but he can't see how much time was spent at the highest clock rate. Looking at those shots, it seems like your phone isn't going into deep sleep nearly as much as it should. Maybe check your wake locks and see what's keeping it awake?

Maximum Ability Maximum Battery Life

Greetings,
So as many of you may know the battery life on the Optimus 2x is terrible. with lots of mixed reports. some ppl 24 hours some ppl 12 hours and even some saying 36 hours. i guess theres a few with like 4-6 hours.. Like me, i find my battery lasts roughly 6-8 hours. when im using the fone for why i purchased it. if im trying to SAVE battery. i can squeeze 10-12 hours out of it.
however, this lead me to think everyone who is trying to save battery finds it usually involves turning off everything u can do without. disabling alot of stuff etc.meaning, ROMS that perform well with everything disabled, would be recommended over those that are not. yet these roms that dont perform so hot under lock down, may actually perform better than the very same rom that out lasted it but with everything on.
what i want to know is, which is the better rom that allows me to have everything ON. im talking
wifi 3g data gps (prob not BT who uses that anyway? j/k) rotation, display brightness, motion sensor, gyro + the works.
which ROM would give the superior battery life over the others, with that in mind. EVERYTHING available.
<rant>
Because im sick of having to look @ my fone when i want to do something and think. well its locked down i have to quick menu or widget enable data, turn on 3g. or wireless. oh now i need gps. watch it chew juice turning on. use it. then turn it off again. seems pointless.
i want all my fone all the time. its discouraging when i know i should be using my phone for alot more. yet i dont because im so worried about trying to conserve battery, im over it. i dont care if it runs out of battery in 6 hours. it was going to anyway, at least i can do anything with it at anytime. withing that timeframe.
</rant>
DISCUSS!
i think ill start by disabling the "% and battery icon " haha
This is a "which is the best ROM" kind of thread and it'll probably be closed by a moderator as these are not allowed here ^^
Anyways, to answer your question I'd say Temasek's CM7 has proven to be the most stable, battery friendly ROM in the past year for me. However, as functional as it is, I find it boring when compared to CM9/CM10 or ICS. Tonyp's PA 12 is another good choice, even with its few flaws (no hwa, for example).
I guess you won't find a definitive answer for this as the experience varies greatly from one user to another. There are way too many variables that make it different for everyone such as the location, the capabilities and strength of each carriers' network, how you have configured your device, the apps installed on it, etc.
In short: try yourself and see which ROM suits your needs the best.
ive tried most the roms on here. but most the time i was disabling everything to see how long the batt would last.

Don't know how people get such a awesome battery I disabled GPS no net on 2g mode brightness lowest no apps installed no syncing..but my battery drains like 6 to 10% in a hour Even without using the phone screen off brand new original battery also ril baseband matching and network full 0% without signal don't know what's the cause flashed every ROM and ever kernel seems this problem is with phone as most of us never get good standby on lg optimus 2x ...
---------- Post added at 02:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:59 PM ----------
Even I removed memory card read in some forum that some corrupted files make your media server to scan again and again..still no success
I dont have everything disabled - for example there is no need to turn off GPS... If its enabled it doesnt mean that it will drain your battery whole the time. It will drain your battery, only when there will be need to use GPS - for example when you open Maps, or application for navigation, tracking and so on...
I think that wifi and mobile data always enabled drains your battery the most. If you could live with mobile data disabled when you dont need it, you could have wifi enabled all the time with advanced settings = turn off when screen is off. Then you could have a lot longer battery life. I dont have wifi enabled all the time and if I dont have time for touching my phone, it could last for cca 3-4 days on CM7. If I have time, it will drop to 1-2 days.
I have off everything so it should last longer than why it doesn't even I deleted Google backup transport.apk as in s3 forum it was mentioned this file keeps draining your battery..Hope somebody have a fix presently on clean nvflash goodbye ROM by Stephan with 2nd core off and screen off frequency set to lowest 216
That's why I bought for the 2x and 4x extended batteries so I can use the phone like it supposed to be used. I also have a external battery tmas back up. Battery life on android period is bad. Ios or windwos phone 7 and 8 just have way more superior battery life. It is just a fact we android people have to deal with. It sucks.

Don't know I just feel atleast standby battery life as mentioned by lg for optimus 2x is 500 hours means around 20 days...atleast it should run a day
Yes the battery will last that long if the phone has no apps installed that utilize either data nor location services. My 2x gets great battery life if airplane mode and not touched it will like barely dropped battery at all but as soon as airplane mode is of battery goes to hell especially if u use data over cellular instead wifi. Same in the 4x. Android is the biggest battery hog period. My windows phone 7.5 with the same social apps and location apps and email set up last a whole day in the same usage pattern where my androids not even making it a half day. It is just that bad. Now with extended battery I get like 13 14 hours out of 2x or 4x not great that's on a 4400 mah battery for the 4x where I get on a 1600mah on Windows Phone 23 or more hours. That's the main part I hate about Android. The battery life is just that bad.

Sadly android sadly really is a battery hog. Specially on data it eats thought the battery in freaking no time. I bought extended batteries and they make the phone usable but also bigger but at least I can use it now without having it on the charger every freaking damn minute. I am still thinking about using my windows phone 7 as daily phone again. Because battery is just so much better.

Actually I'm die hard fan of Android but surely would try windows don't know what's with lg phones Samsung Android have awesome standby and great battery life my cousin have Samsung s advance it's not add speedy as 2x but battery life is 10 times batter better than 2x ...I think the problem is the processor lg just wanted to enter it's name in world record book and released before proPer testing ...
you may be right sir
Don't know my best stand by time was with Django Manouch 1.7 rom, without any extra apps instaled and using it only when needed, the phone managed 8 hours before reaching 10% of battery life remaining.

i think it's calculated like this
500 hrs standby OR 10 hours call time OR 3 hrs Wi-fi with screen on etc... not all together
some battery related apps are showing you exact time you have left for each purpose (surfing on wi-fi/3G, gaming, standby, listening music,...)

i have stock battery that came with the phone... phone is 9 months old...
my standby time is superb (1% loss in 8 hours over night with wi-fi off) so if you calculate it with simple maths - i can get some 700-800 hrs standby in theory (but i think noone leaves his phone untouched for a week )
my 2 cents...
wow, i put mine in 2g / data off / gps of everything off. wifi off. sleep it still be flat in 10 hours. lose 10% per hour.
Have same 10% per hour that too on brand new stock battery from lg service center

Not getting this "awesome" battery life??

Hey all. I just got my s6 active via insurance upgrade about 5 days ago.. I expected more battery from what I read... I unplugged it this morning at 525 and by 625 I was at 92%. Is this normal? The battery screen doesn't add up to the battery % lost. I'm just trying to figure out how everyone is getting this great battery. Is it possible they sent me a referbed with a used battery? Many days/weeks of running the phone will it take in order for the battery to even out?

Seems like your phone doesn't go into deep sleep. There is a rogue app that is probably causing your phone not going into deep sleep. Find the app cure the problem.
Yes it does take many cycles for the battery to reach optimal battery life
Nothing keeping it alive.... Cpu sleep time is the majority of the time. I do use my phone heavily. But i get about the same life as I did with my s5 active..
Same here. I "upgraded" from a 6S on the premise of much better battery life and waterproof without the need of a LifeProof case.
So far I'm getting about the same, maybe less life out of it than my iPhone. I've been out of the Android game for almost 2 years, what can I do to fix this?
Based on battery tests and whatnot, I should be losing around 6-7% per hour, instead of the 10-12% I'm losing now, about on par with an iPhone with half the battery size.
Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: Noob mistake, forgot to mention I'm on the forced 5.1.1 version.

The 5.1.1 version was a battery hog for me too. Before it, i would make it til bedtime with about 30-40% battery of moderate usage. During the 5.1.1 upgrade i was at 40-50% before lunch! Had to charge twice daily. Now with Marshmallow, i'm back up to all day battery. Even lately being a heavy user, it'll generally last all day. I might be at 5% by bedtime, but it'll last all day.

How much SOT do you get?
I lose about 6% per hour if I watch videos on wifi, however I lose 1% every 6-7 minutes if I'm using my phone for anything else.
What system process is killing the battery? There's no reason I shouldn't get over 12 hours of SOT from daily usage.

I don't know how to say this without sounding condescending, i don't mean to, but you're insane if you think you should get anywhere near 12 hours SOT. Let alone "no reason I shouldn't get over 12 hours of SOT". I doubt I could get 12 hours SOT with 2 batteries.
I average 5-6 hours SOT which i think is actually pretty awesome, (And that's with the dark theme). I honestly don't count battery percentages and compare videos to surfing/browsing. I just know that i can use my phone all day and I don't have to charge it until bedtime.

Their web browsing test is a more realistic expectation, which is why I said 12. They got 16 hours, which I don't doubt, but this phone draining comparably to a 4+ year old HTC? Not at all impressed.
I have screenshots where I tested their results vs actual daily usage and they were very close for every phone.
But no worries, I'm glad you're satisfied with your phone's performance.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-how-much-screen-time-you-getting-charge.html
A few new phones have come out with massive batteries, but still not 12 hours SOT. One guy with a 10Ah zerolemon on his note 4 was able to get 16 hours (unverified), but that's the best i've ever heard.
http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-s6-active-battery-life-test/
The One X, S3, LG G2, and iPhone 6 & 6S web browsing results were great representations of what I could expect as far as smartphone battery goes. I've had more phones than I can count, but those were the ones I kept the longest and remember the results off the top of my head.
I can find my old One X SOT screenshots to further prove my point.

This makes no sense to me. In their test, the battery lasted longer playing videos, than web surfing? Something is off here. I've never seen a phone have more than 6 hours SOT, ever (with the exception of extended batteries). Maybe if the phone was in extreme battery saver mode and the screen was at the lowest setting possible, and it was only on 3g, it might be possible to get 6 hours. I'm not calling you a liar, or the article you posted a lie, i just have to believe something else is going on. If i was to get 12+ hours of SOT, for me, that would be equivlent to the phone lasting me all work week.
I hope you get your battery life figured out, but i have to believe we're on different pages here about something. There was an update pushed out this morning, maybe it will help a little.
Not getting this "awesome" battery life??
Yes, this is due to less CPU usage and videos/movies are not almost entirely white.
I looped a couple of YouTube movies and left the S6 Active running all night at 50% brightness with only wifi on. I woke up, 8 or so hours of SOT, and the battery has 59% left. This leads me to believe it's a system app, more than likely a Samsung one, since all of my other Android phones don't have this issue.
I'll post up actual pictures when I get home, I'm back on my iPhone.
You haven't been here long, which is fine, but trust me when I say that there's something draining the battery. A G2 with a 3000mAh battery lasted over 9 hours consistently with data on, the S6A should have no problem matching that.

Hello I have recently purchased an used S6 active gsm unlockrd with android 5.1. This is my first day with it I still don't know about the battery stats anyway I would like to know if I will get improvement in marshmallow. What are the advantages. Also since at the s6 and s6 edge the marshmallow update improved the camera speed. I would like to know if it will improve also the camera speed. Thanks

Hmmm, maybe i'm just considering real world use instead of ideal conditions. Kinda like how i'm supposed to get 35 mpg in my car, but actually only get about 26-27.
When i was on 5.1.1 and had insane battery drainage, all of my research and testing said it was kernel related. I just stuck it out and waited for marshmallow, and now my battery is back to acceptable to me.
Keep us updated if you figure it out, even though i'm relatively happy with my battery life, i'm always happy to get more.
P.S. I've actually been here longer than you, so i'm not sure if that was directed at me. You are way more active and most likely way more software savvy than i am, but i've been here a long time.

Yeah he gained 9% battery by leaving his phone on all night, lol. I kid, maybe i'm just reading it wrong.
"left running all night at 50% battery life....... I woke up, and the battery has 59% left"

I meant brightness, too many ideas at once haha. I'm posting actual pictures in a second, and will keep the phone running while I'm at work.
It has to do with a Samsung "feature", I've turned off most of them from settings. Next will be disabling packages.
It sucks that we don't have root, it seems like an AOSP Rom would net us the battery life that we should get.
