The pen drive you are using requires more power than the phone can deliver.
You may need another pendrive for it to work. I have two pendrives, one works, and one does not
Use a USB hub in between, I know it doesn't make much sense, but this is how I get around the power consumption error.

Does Droid 4 have Host USB capability? In Lapdock it should but what about other methods.
Theoretically Droid 3 didn't have HostUSB functionality, but when you did connect it to Lapdock or HD Dock with USB the ports were supported and there were even app for supporting flash drives. The only with ancestor was that USB didn't have power so you couldn't use cables that have microUSB/USB to connect devices.
droid 4 will do usb host with a few caveats.
It will only do fat32 formated flash drives.
you need to power the drive off another device.
basically you need a usb otg (micro male on one end, usb female on the other) and a usb hub that uses an ac adaptor. The hub with power cord provides the power for the device, and the OTG cable is for the data. This can also be achieved using a powered y cable in place of the hub, but you would need to have the power-only usb port plugged in to a power source.
edit: link to y cable image for better explanation

Has anybody tried Remote Release with the Droid 4? It does Canon DSLR and normally works with Galaxy S2 and 3 without rooting.
Using a USB OTG cable I've connected my Canon DSLR but I had now joy unfortunately...it doesn't recognise anything. Also I've tried keyboard and mouse but that doesn't seem to be working either. Am I missing something

Thanks, I've seen this already. I guess what I was looking for is to understand whether everything OTG needs power or just things like keyboard/mouse/pendrive - things that actually consume it. TBH the DSLR camera itself is not actually being charged or anything, it is just DATA, so I was sort of hoping that I can avoid.
Out of all the devices i have tried all have needed external power... prior to the purchase of an HD docking station I just used a powered USB hub with an otg cable....

I think I've made an assumption that it would behave similar to my android tablet, just plug in the pendrive and it's all good. I have defo came across devices that don't need external power, especially for a camera that doesn't take power.

Hi, I'm not able to charge my cappy with the USB cable hooked to the power outlet.. it says my phones charging but when I look at the battery stats it's still the same percentage.. the only way I can charge it is if I hook it up to my PC and enable USB mass storage mode.. does this have anything to do with software or is it something with hardware??

troubleshooting ideas-
are you saying that it won't charge with usb debug toggle on, but only in usb mass storage mode? if that is the case, it cannot be hardware, imho.
tried a different usb cable, ac ps and outlet just in case?
ideas:
take a look at power supplies shown in sys/class folder- anything odd there?
reset batterystats, which are used to calibrate fuel gauge?
posting more info about your rom and mods might help with getting answers.

Got the problem solved
Turns out it was the AC adapter that was broken

I'M thinking about getting a nexus 7. Question about it's USB OTG capability: Can it connect to multiple things at once through a USB host? I am thinking the ultimate portable workplace would be a portable keyboard, mouse, a microSD reader, and a charging cable all coming from a single host. Is Android at the point where this sort of thing is possible yet?

No, currently you can connect to 1 slave usb device, maybe 2 with the use of an Y splitter cable, if at that. Am not sure if it's a software or hardware limitation.

With usb otg cable pluged in usb hub you can connect more devices.

You should know though that while using USB OTG (if i recall correctly) you are not able to charge the N7 at the same time. It is either one or the other.
While using OTG can charging if flash patched kernel.

Thats what I am gonna xo, as soon as my y- cable arrives.
I'm thinking of getting a Bluetooth keyboard

Awesome! Can't wait for more kernals incorporate it.
Has anybody tried using USB otg with 2.5" self powered hard drive?
I tried my 1tb western digital passport and it doesn't even power.
Flash drives work fine. Using stock kernel BTW.

I am not an expert on the subject but maybe its the lack of power. Try a powered usb hub or something if possible. Again I am no expert but usb 3.0 compatible devices usually make use of the extra power allotment to be "self powering" unlike in usb 2.0. So I am guessing it is a power issue.

keep in mind that must be partitioned as FAT in order to see the content of the drive via OTG. i don't think NTFS is supported. i hear there are custom modded kernels for samsung phones that support NTFS but that's not the case with regular kernels

I've got a 2.5" ToughDrive and the OTG cable I have won't supply enough juice to power that.
The cable works fine with USB pen drives but that's it.
I haven't found an OTG cable that had a power input to support more power-hungry drives.
I've got mine connected via USB to my PC. It says bit charging, and in the notifications says connected as USB device. Does it not charge that way or is something wrong?

I see strange USB behavior on mine. When I plug it in to the USB adapter in my car it does not charge. However, my other HTC phones do charge in my car
These micro USB ports put the power pins on the outside edges so they are subjected to most stress and usually pull loose first. So its not too unusual for the data to work but the charging to not work. If that's what's happening its likely that data will stop working too after a while...
