You should be able to enter download mode by holding only the down volume button and power button while the login is off. But you will need the home button to select options in the boot menu after update.

If you have root, you could download a nice app: reboot to recovery.
To select options in cwm you also could use the power button. Just press it with a short/normal tick.
I found this link there are a few easy ways to boot in Download mode
check them and tell us if they work.

Sorry for late reply, bought a Jig in the end as they were down from £10 to £1.60 on amazon! worked like a charm, straight into download mode, back to stock rooted and now back up and running rooted with cyanogen 10.1 nightly, very nice!

Can I ask the steps you took on using the USB JIG (especially on choosing which stock kernel to flash)? I am currently experiencing the same problem and my USB JIG will arrive probably by the end of the week.

Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?
How to solve? My SGS I9000 accidentaly off during downloading firmware upgrade. Now, when I switch on the phone, no Samsung and Galaxy S logo appeared, but the connected phone-pc icon appeared with warning icon in the middle. What can I do?
You have semi bricked it. you need to put it back in to download mode (vol down + home key + power button) press all 3 buttons at once. When in download mode reflash it again with Odin. If your 3 button doesn't work then you need a jig
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah.. 3 buttons doesn't work. I don't have any JIG right now. Maybe the best is go to Samsung Service Centre. Huu..
Plenty of jigs available on ebay or see the thread on here about making one
Anyone can verify this solution, is it work? Mine can't:
SOFT BRICK
Resolution
First off DO NOT PANIC. there is a simple solution, just remove the battery , plug the phone into the computer, press and hold volume down and it will enter download mode.

You can't because it doesn't work that way. If you have a semi brick or brick (without the combo) you need a JIG/JTAG.
Other tricks like "heat the battery" "heat the Cellphone" or the one you pointed are just fake.
Hello,

is there an another option?
i'm pretty sure there is a way of forcing download mode, and then flashing a ROM using Odin.. not sure how though.. try googling it or asking around on forums.
Although, if you dropped your phone, and now its not working, there's a possibility of physical damage, and then you'l have to get it fixed.
The good news is that if you cant force download mode or recovery mode, and you cant turn the phone on, your dealer won't be able to tell what you were doing without forcing a flash or replacing hardware, so you're safe anyway.
But yeah, try forcing a flash using a bootloader.
EDIT: oh yeah, check this out. seems pretty scary, but hey, what the hell do you have to lose??

I have had this problem already. You need to force download mode by pressing three buttons and then with Odin reinstall the version you use to have you can find everything on this forum if you search a little. Success!

Stupid reply but: Tried pulling the battery out?
Anyways:
No download mode means buying/borrowing a jig.
Or you could try the hair dryer method but thats a bit risky.
If you cant to any of those you'll have to send it to Samsung. Just say you were updating to 2.2.1 with KIES and then when the update was finished, your phone wouldnt start.
If it fails starting in download mode remove the battery put it back and try again. If the telephone can boot to the galaxy screen. It can boot in download mode. It was tricky when i had the problem and it took me 2 hours until i manage to have it. In my telephone the trick was press menu first then on and volume down..

Note CAPTIVATE NOT SAMSUNG GALAXY S
Its a different system for download mode on a different phone .
Method remove battery replace hold down volume DOWN button and HOME button Now hold down POWER button .
When phone boots to splash screen let go of home and volume down followed by power button .
not work means you need the download mode recovery jig from the front pages .

Since we can force dl mode with sa jig, is it possible for a differently configured jig to do the same with revovery mode?
What are you trying to do?
Think about it, if you need a jig that likely means your software on your phone is toast, so would be recovery
If the phone can boot you can use abd to force recovery

you can unbrick you galaxy S without jtag or jig , here is the steps:
1- Start Odin
2- Attach the USB cable to the PC (DO NOT ATTACH IT TO THE PHONE)
3- Press and hold "Volume up" and "home" buttons
4- Attach the USB cable to the phone while holding both buttons
5- The phone will enter in download mode
Install a new firmware and everything is going to be OK

misinformation! Thanks for shutting it down. I'm soft bricked since Thurs. I do not need try what is incorrect..
While I ordered a jig Friday, I'm two hundred 3button + usb, + battery attempts later and only one DL mode, and that fruitless for other reasons..

Jig is amazing! Now Monday and I got the mail. One try, and into Odin 1.82 and I even completed the talon1.3 kernel load.. All in under 60 seconds, when I spent the whole weekend bruising my fingers trying to get into DL mode and worrying about whether I was more than soft bricked. I had gotten into DL mode twice in the 4 days with no progress in Odin.
The power button on my captivate is pretty much not working. Im not really 100% whats going on with it but as soon as i put in the battery, it automatically turns on and if i hold volume up and down it reboots. however when the phone is on pressing it does nothing, and the same for recovery.
Does anyone know of anyway to fix this?
If the buttons a goner whatre my options for working around this..
thanks in advance!
