Does anyone know how can we check the phone for defects like dead pixels, etc when buying the phone? Does it have any test codes to enter just like Samsung phones with the *#0*#??
Thanks!

You can download "dead pixel test" from the play store.

I've found this test menu code from an online source
*#*#3424#*#*
Can someone with a HTC One help to confirm if the code works on their phone?
Oh my, what is this obsession in this forum with dead pixels. Every day there's a thread about dead pixels. Still wondering how you can detect one dead pixel on a 4.7" 2.1 megapixel display. You have to have microscopic eyes, that's for sure.

Yes, I do agree with you that its pretty difficult to detect a single dead pixel in a 4.7" 1080 HD screen. However, you can use the same test to detect if there's a cluster of dead pixels present. There are also other features that needs to be tested (LED notification, speakers, mic, camera, wifi, etc). Manufacturers only do batch sample testings and does not test each inidvidual phone before shipment. So it is only up to us, the consumers, to test the them out before accepting our purchased products.

Is not obsession. Is about getting a good quality product with the amount of money you are paying! Why get a defected good when you can check before you purchase? If you don't feel like helping at all, don't even reply please.

And thanks very much with the code. Hope it will work when I'm purchasing the phone.
The code works. It is not helpful for dead pixel testing.

Well, as soon as I purchased my Nexus 7 tab and received it I thought to my self for 199$ I just robbed Google for this high spec tech giant of a tablet, packing a 1280x800 HD display, Tegra 3 CPU, 12 core GPU, 1 GB of RAM, NFC, GPS and Jelly Bean! WOW! and the list goes on and on and I thought I just couldn't complain even if I tried to. The first thing I wanted to do was to test it out with some apps and ROMs and kernel's and then the second thing was to hop on XDA Nexus 7 general thread to see if I missed any cons after my tests with the device and boy was there a lot of unhappy people with a lot of issues. So, I checked my device for dead pixels, screen lift, blown speakers and screen flicker...I thank GOD that I didn't have any of the issues stated, but I asked myself after seeing all of these people returning, upset, and bashing Asus and Google for quality issues, I thought to myself, if this had happened to me would I be among the bashing group? After a deep breath and thinking after all this is a 199$ premium spec tablet and with specs like this given for a price like 199$ and issues I've seen hardly even looked like a issue, hell! I wouldn't mind buying another for the bathroom as a electronic newspaper when I'm taking a LMAO! So guys, at a price like this for Nexus high spec like this I would have still purchased it even if it didn't have a chassis!
(EDIT)
Please post pictures of you defective Nexus 7's THANKS!

You'd feel differently if your screen was lifted so badly that when you pressed on it, the screen cracked. This has actually happened to a few people. Being a good value isn't an excuse for poor quality control.

QFT.
Normally I would agree with the expectation that a $199 tablet would feel like a toy, but that was until I owned a Kindle Fire. That thing is built like a tank for the same $199, and its build quality I think is something I've never seen a complaint about despite the low price. So after owning a Fire, I would say I did expect the same sort of solid build quality at $199 out of the Nexus 7. Packing in high end internal hardware is no excuse to cheap out and have exterior bits and pieces failing, screens not calibrated well, etc etc. IMO for the sake of the manufacturer's reputation, either do it right or don't do it at all.
Whoever built the Kindle Fire is who Google should contract for the next Nexus tablet...
Google made this with the intent on gaining market share. I'm sure they make little to no money on the tablet itself. It all come from the Play Store.
That being said, I would still expect Google and Asus to put out a quality product, regardless of price. Now, I thankfully haven't had any issues, but if I did, I would still be upset. $200 is still a good chunk of change.
I cannot imagine that these two companies are happy that they have released a product with so many defects. Thankfully it seems that that they are handling the issues quickly and being helpful. Too bad they don't get any credit for that.
All said, I am very happy with my purchase, and feel better knowing if an issue does arise, I will be taken care of.

Your first post was on the money, but I find it hard to believe you wouldn't care if your screen shattered due to poor build quality
I think most people would understandably be a little bit mad lol.
I've got minor screen lift on mine, and zero ****s given. It is an amazing device and the more I use it the more I love it.
It seems to have matured a bit over time too, had a rocky start with a bit of lag etc, maybe that was because I didn't know how to close backgrounded apps at first lol.

I too think people have out of kilter expectations, and they are being manipulated by the Apple shills into RMAing perfect good units, because they have been lead to believe that screen lift will get worse etc.
It's all part of the delaying plan whilst Apple prepare their 7in tablet.
I know of 7 Nexus7's with friends and family and all of them are perfect to our specifications. My mothers has a small amount of screen lift, but she will never notice it, and it has no effect on daily use. I'm also pretty sure that before the internet age, there wouldn't be this sheep mentality into RMAing units... Those people wouldn't have even noticed these things.

I guess it sounds strange around here, but yes. I do expect to buy a quality product. And I believe some people have gotten quality Nexus 7, so it's not like we are expecting the impossible.
Just waiting for ASUS to consistently reproduce that quality.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I bought one of these because it was the first Google tablet and it has pure, unadulterated Jelly Bean. With a Nexus device, you don't need to worry about app compatibility or updates. Your tablet is the only officially supported Android tablet.
Tell me what other, more luxuriant tablet has this much to offer in terms of software and compatibility. Then you can criticize me for being cheap.

Google CSRs have been telling customers that any screen lifting at all should be exchanged. We've been infiltrating the intern placement program in Cupertino for months, and when they corralled us into answering phones our preparations were complete.

I agree and disagree to certain extents.
The screen lifting is definitely inexcusable, although I'm still a believer of the idea that these forums makes the % of defective units sound a lot higher than it actually is.
However, there are a lot of other things that people are just being ridiculously OCD about:
1. Backlight bleed. Okay, I dont have it on this unit, but I've had it on my phones in the past, a bit on my 20" Dell IPS monitor and even some of my $1k+ TVs (thankfully not on my newest 50" plasma ;D). Considering the problem is really only obvious at a pure black screen and high brightness, I dont consider it a problem. Its more of a inherent disadvantage of using these kinds of displays.
2. Dead pixels. Same as above... My monitor has a dead pixel somewhere, although after years of using it I dont even remember where it is anymore. My 42" Toshiba LCD has two "stuck" pixels (one red one green) on the screen, bothered me for the first two weeks of owning it, but literally impossible to notice under normal use. Again, its an inherent disadvantage. Unless you have a good few dead pixels scattered all over the screen, just deal with it.
3. The flickering issue. I tried this myself; couldnt replicate it. Then I was told I need to have only 1 bar of WiFi signal, max brightness, light background, and be downloading a large file while keeping the screen on for at least a few minutes to begin noticing the issue... WHAT THE HELL? Are people serious about this one... its just stupid.
4. Multi-touch Axis crossing. I made a post on the thread and attached my own youtube video. My N7 doesnt have the issue unless I use four fingers in a square formation with all axis overlapping. Two fingers pose no problem.
Discovered that my G2 has the same issue, after years of using and not noticing a problem.
Not sure how real this issue is, but I guess if my device went wonky with just two fingers I'd be annoyed too.

While i do expect to get a quality product with anything I buy, I couldn't agree more in terms of the over the top OCD. When I first opened my N7 from its packaging my first thought I had was WOW! I honestly thought the silver bezel was metal simply because the build quality felt so good. We all know the under the hood specs are top notch and it came sporting Jelly Bean. Do some units have a few early launch manufacturing flaws? Sure but that's usually the case with most new devices. So for $199/$249 I think ASUS and Google hit the nail on the head. Im 100% happy with my purchase.

Well, I don't know about other countries but when the tablet gets to Sweden they are gonna lose very much cash if they don't fix these problems as the laws are very good for customers. For example, if having to return the same product twice/2 repairs without any difference you can claim your money back.
Expecting a perfect device or not it should be working as it is stated to do. I would not accept a device with the screen moving around when touching it for example, that is not how it is supposed to be.
What a silly question.
I expect to get quality on any device I purchase...especially a Nexus device.
That said, I have a tiny smidgen of screen lift, so minute that I had to really look for it to see it. I do not care.

I, too, had screen lift, and was able to repair it, myself. I also had a noticeable creak I was able to MacGuyver away with little effort.
I must say this is one hell of a device for two-hundred bucks, but if my homegrown fix hadn't worked on the screen lift, I would have surely RMA'd it after a couple of months (as others have done/are doing).
Had I had screen lift to the point where it cracked, I would have been quite (righteously) sore at Google/Asus, but would have definitely not taken things to the extremes I've seen on these forums.
Yes we did expect a quality product. And we got one.
Everyone has issues in their initial roll out, and Google seems to have corrected the issues in their next batch. So if you have a defective device, hold onto it for a little bit. Once the next batch reaches wide circulation, call Google and get a replacement. Problem solved.
I absolutely hate the new qhd screens. I think its a waste of resources, battery and processing power. Im not too familiar with amoled screens. Im wondering if they look good at resolutions other than native, such as how a crt monitor is, and not like a lcd which looks horrible at anything other than its native res.
If this was true we could just run the phone at 1080p res and save a ton of resources instead of pushing all those pixles that we dont need.
All modern displays need to be run at a native resolution to make it look good. Old CRTs could change the pixels they were projecting onto the screen which allowed it to do true resolution shifts. With modern displays those pixels aren't projected onto glass. They are hard set. Consequently, you can't do it with LCD, AMOLED, LED, or Plasma. 1080p ain't happening.
However, we theoretically could push it to 720p since that is one quarter of it's native resolution. That would just mean that four pixels would be grouped together as one. I expect it won't take long for mods to make their way out for that and it could have a significant impact on battery life. Hopefully it won't screw anything up. I've heard that 720p mods on the LG G3 have screwed with some of the stock LG apps.

Damn. Im not sure that the 720p would be enough for me. Just had a g flex and its 6 inch at 720 and didnt look the greatest. I hope next year they realize that qhd is totally unnecessary and go back to 1080 panels.

Why not just buy a 1080p phone then? The Huawai Ascend Mate 7 might be kind of what you're looking for.
It's got a 6" 1080p screen, metal construction, a huge (4100mah) battery, finger print scanner, etc. It's also roughly the same physical size or a little smaller than the N6 and similar in price I believe.
Overall the reviews have been fairly strong too. It might be worth a look.

Need a nexus device. Im tired of being held hostage with updates by the manufactuers for updates. They either wont fix something dumb that a dev can fix in 2 seconds, or they completely abandon the device after a year and you will never see the next version of android. I need to keep a phone that has massive dev support.
Plus that phone specifically doesn't suit me. No front facing stereo speakers, no amoled, no wireless charging, no stock android, and some weird processor that I don't trust lol
Does it actually make a difference to change the resolution? You still have to light up ALL the pixels.

Not on an AMOLED display. Backlighting is done on a per-pixel basis. That's why blacks are so dark, because the pixels aren't even on.

Coming from someone with a g3, there are plenty of things you can do to make the phone snappy without having to gimp the resolution. The phone can handle it, just buy a portable battery if you are really worried.

Absolutely it will. QHD isn't just about what the screen putting it out. It's the processor calculating what goes on that display. You are right that the power the screen consumes doesn't change. However, the processor now only has to calculate 1/4th of the graphics it used to. When you consider how much power is needed for graphics calculations on the processor, that is a MAJOR savings and can really add up over time.
Major? Like he said you still have to fire up all the pixels. It has always been my understanding that pushing the sheer number of pixels is what eats battery. I agree that it's overkill for such a small screen but regardless it's here, you can either but it or not.
on my g3, outside of playing games, reducing the resolution did not increase my performance or battery life.
Hi,
I want to buy something with a 6"+ diagonal with a 16:9-ish AR to replace my dying Zenfone 2. Since nowadays every new phone is released with an 18:9 AR, which is no upgrade from my current 5.5" phone, I have to look at older models. Currently I've almost decided on a Mi Mix.
There is a Mi Mix review on GSMArena, it has some negative points that I'd like to hear a second opinion about before I make my decision.
* IPS LCD: apparently quite bad outside. I can barely see my Zenfone 2 IPS screen in rather cloudy conditions, at max luminosity. Is the Mi Mix screen that bad outside? (I've seen an S8+ under direct sunlight and it was bright as if inside, right next to my Zenfone 2's litterally black screen, but well, amoled is amoled )
* No MicroSD slot: The USB 2 on my Zenfone 2 is very slow, and every time I want to load a few gigs of video of flac files I remove the MicroSD and use an USB3 adapter on my PC, it is way faster this way. Is the Mi Mix Type-C port USB 3 ot two?
* "Our review unit acquired a few scratches on top of its display in the first three days even though we were extra careful in handling it". Ew. Is it really that bad? I've used screen protectors on my older phones but you always see there is one and it is quite distracting. I've had my Zenfone 2 without a protector film in my pant pockets with loose change and keys, and the Gorilla Glass is spotless after 3 years of that. I was intending to do the same with the Mi Mix, but if it won't last a week at a 400-500€ price, I'll look elsewhere.
Thanks.

Hi, according this:
https://www.devicespecifications.com/es/model/9dda3f3d
The USB port is 3.0 in the Mi Mix. I have the 256G version and so neved missed the SD card slot.
As for the display visibility outside there is a thread in this forum about this. My personal experience is that the visibility is not so good when facing the sun directly, but I have a glass screen protector that may be worsening it.
Sounds good, thanks guys. One last thing: since it transmits sound by vibrating the top part of the screen, do other people really hear your conversations? I am reading conflicting opinions on the subject. I suppose that it may be the case in a small and quiet room, but I guess that in the street, in the subway or the train, there is enough ambient noise to counter this?

It's the 128gb version
One more thing. It's probably a stupid question, but here goes. One reviewer said that since the Mi Mix' screen is not a standard 16:9 resolution, it will display "standard" content with black bars. Fair enough, I see no way around this anyway. But then he added that native content shot with the Mi Mix will make full usage of the near bezel-less screen. This got me thinking... I suppose the camera does have native and standard 16:9/4:3 modes, doesn't it? I don't want to have to process all my photos and videos every time so they fit onto 16:9 screens without black borders.
Also, if the stock camera app can do that, what of the one that comes with Lineage OS?
Camera app has 4:3 and 16:9, no worries.
Hi
By coincidence I've recently replaced my aging Zenfone 2 ZE551ML with a Mi Mix 6/256: rest assured you won't be regretting the ZF2
The missing SD card is a non-issue, considering the 'minimum' configuration of the Mix provides you with 128GB of storage..
Screen visibility in full daylight is more than adequate for me, and anyway much better than the ZF2 screen. I find the Mix has a better, clearer display somehow.
Can't vouch for the Mix screen resistance, but I've put a cheap glass screen protector on it. Sure it's a tad smaller than the Mix screen - for some reason they don't seem to make properly sized screen glass - but good enough for the time being.
I think you'll appreciate the difference between the two devices, as I did.
PS: have a better look to the ZF2 screen: you'll find lots of small scratches - mine had them, to be sure.

Hi,
I want to buy something with a 6"+ diagonal with a 16:9-ish AR to replace my dying Zenfone 2. Since nowadays every new phone is released with an 18:9 AR, which is no upgrade from my current 5.5" phone, I have to look at older models. Currently I've almost decided on a Mi Mix. (...)

A quick mini-review for people who might stumble upon this thread with the same concerns that I had. I got the 6/256G variant.
* IPS LCD: way more luminous that the IPS on the old Zenfone 2, so no problem with this. Also, even though the MiMix is larger with the same resolution as the ZF2, it looks sharper.
* No MicroSD slot: while USBTreeView does not show "SS" (super-speed, allegedly USB3) but only "H" (High speed, allegedly USB2), the transfer speed is definitely USB3.
* Scratches: I don't know what the GSMArena reviewers were doing to the phone, or maybe their model had a different screen coating, but after a week in my pants pocket together with some loose change, the screen does not have a single scratch.
* Phone sound: The handset produces a clearly worse sound quality, but this screen vibration does not let other people hear your conversation.
* The stock camera app is kind of garbage-y. No stabilisation. You can change "Camera Frame" from 16:9 to 4:3, and "Picture Quality" between High/Standard/Low, but nowhere did I find figures like "4608x2592 (16:9, 11.93MP)" that free apps like "Open Camera" will show you.
Extra stuff:
* If you are planning to flash the phone right away, be ready to waste 3 days of your life being unable to install and config your phone. The Mi Mix has a locked bootloader, you have to ask Xiaomi for the permission to unlock the device that belongs to you. This part is done quickly though, but then you will have wait 72 hours upon receipt of the permission e-mail until their flashing software allows you to do the actual unlocking.
* It comes with MIUI 8 (Android 6), and no apt-x. If you have good headphones like the Sennheiser Momentum M2, the difference will be huge.
* I was intending to install Lineage OS for the apt-x support. After flashing I figured it did not have the official Google Play app (big duh! moment ). Not willing to risk using an ersatz then fight with compatibility issues (I have quite a few official paid apps), I flashed MIUI 9 Global beta (Android 7.1.2). Even though by itself MIUI 8 and 9 are rather rubbish (if I didn't want an app drawer I'd have bought an iphone ), with the Nova Launcher it works fine. And it has apt-x too.
Overall I am quite happy with the purchase so far.
Great thread.. i just bought one and waiting for it to arrive. i live in canada. where do you guys who own one live ?? im asking because i also read something about the 4G LTE bands missing or slow ?? do you guys have issues with data speeds ?

Well, I live in the other side of the world (Israel) and I have no problem with data speeds and I get 4G LTE almost everywhere with good reception, But I dont know about North America (In Israel there are no problems with 4G LTE bands and data speed on chinese phones).
good to know.. thanks for that..
Hi,
Considering Nokia 8 has a QHD screen and best CPU/ GPU combo currently available, I presume VR would be great on it. Could someone please check and let me know?
I understand Daydream wouldn't work but Cardboard is pretty cool too.
I'm not sure how many of you would be aware but there is a way of making Steam and Vive VR games work on the mobile using an app called VRidge and its companion software called Riftcat on the desktop. I'd be grateful if someone could test that as well.
Thanks

From what I've read, some LCD screens are able to meet Google's daydream specs, but Google doesn't seem to favour any LCD even if latency is ok. Ironic really as the screen on my Nokia 8 that I returned was imho a better display than what Google's fitted to the pixel 2xl..
To the point of when I receive my 2xl, if it's as bad as 2 of the 3 I've looked at, it will be returned and I will reorder a Nokia 8 or hang on for the Nokia 9..

That really sucks. For now, Samsung seems to be the only manufacturer capable of making a great amoled display.
Although your post is probably the best endorsement Nokia needs!
Screen specs
Anyone abke to get nokia 8 screen specs? Latency? Refresh rate?

I do my best to avoid OLED screens, i have only had one and the screen burnt in very quickly, i dare say they are much better now but the screen on the Nokia 8 is beautiful, no need for OLED.
EDIT:
Just to add, i'd stick my neck out and say the Nokia 8 screen is nicer than the screen fitted to my brothers iPhone X.
After 2 replacements (all green screen's) I've decided enough is enough, this latest one has no green screen issue (BOE) display but the FP reader and face unlock is seriously bad compared to the others I've had. I'm running the 146 update as well and have done a wipe of the device, along with reprogramming my fingers but no joy.
My network are doing a non like for like replacement so I'm getting the Pixel 3XL which comes next week. I will miss this amazing battery and great camera but I've had enough!
Luckily I'm able to retain my tariff as well.
I hope others that stick with this great device have more patience than me.

Sad to hear it my friend, but fully get your position, it's a fantastic device let down by lack or poor QC.
They should have went to Samsung for their displays lol however mine is ok so far, so I'm definitely keeping. It's just sad that this has happened and voided your use.
I have also picked up another device to compliment the Mate 20 Pro....
Here it is.....

Yes it sure is let down by QC, which is a shame as it has the potential to be the best device this year!
Wow fair play, so rocking 2 of the best devices out I see! [emoji12]

Yeah I was always interested in the Find X, and daaaaaaamn it's stunning, but terribly let down by colorOS. Oppo have disabled fastboot, so can't unlock the bootloader, but I'm hopefull that might change.
Other than that I'm extremely happy with it.
Best of luck with your Pixel 3 XL.....:good:

I never really took any 4k videos but heard it wasn't great.

I tried 4K HDR @60fps over YouTube vanced with performance mode enabled, playback struggles @4K, I then switch to 2K [email protected] and video is smooth as butter. 4K [email protected] also no issues.
K980 is not optimised for [email protected] Huawei can add [email protected] for now.
Rooted M20P is a different story.
I think there is some flaw in k980 since it's a new technology and may be it cannot be overclocked, or may be Mali g76 is to be blamed for this.
The rooting section of the forum seems to be rotting, guess Huawei is next victim of Apple protectionism syndrome.
