Gps Lock Issues - Motorola Atrix HD

Hey guys, so I know most of us have issues getting a good lock on our phones. Those of you that are getting decent signals WITHOUT wifi, what have you done differently to get it?

If you've done the EB40 mod, you might want to make sure you trimmed enough plastic for the battery to fit. I know that when I tried it the first time, the battery was lifting the section of the frame with all of the antennae (WiFi, GPS, GSM, etc) and I could not for the life of me get GPS to lock unless I squeezed the phone around the volume buttons. Since I've trimmed it, I've gotten pretty decent lock speeds (around 3 seconds).

so is the only way to fix gps on 4.2.2 is with a physical mod? I had gps working on Joker, but then going to AOKP and PAC seemed to break it. GPS would give me a general location (about 4-500 ft away) so I had to go back to stock to get my GPS working. I'd really like to install PACman v22 but it also has the same GPS issues. Are all of the roms for 4.2.2 based off the same image? (sorry I'm still a little new to this)
(I don't mean to revive an old thread but I didn't see the point in creating a new one for the same issue)

The issue is within the kernel for the 4.2 roms. There will be a fix eventually I'm sure but not as of yet.

[Q] New Captivate; update worth it?

I Just recieved my new captivate (sent the other one in for warranty issues) in the mail, and am wondering if it's worth it to upgrade this 100% stock captivate to JH7, or if I should wait for 2.2?
Another suggestion
Upgrade to the Cognition ROM...you get JH7 with a lot of other goodies... http://cognition.theidiotshideout.net/phpmyfaq/index.php?action=show&cat=1
The GPS issue appears to have been resolved with this ROM, and the whole phone seems quite a bit snappier.

That's awesome; I'm gone for a week-ish and THIS pops up?
Major thanks.
+1 for the Cognition ROM... I have had my device 2 days now and the first thing I did on night #1 was blow away all that ATT and Samsung [email protected] and load Cog.... this ROM rocks... super fast for me. No telling when 2.2 will be baked enough on our devices for me to use it as my daily driver.... weeks maybe....
Flashed Cognition 2.1; Works wonderfully, sans GPS... This phone is turning out to be a real debbie downer in that department.
My GPS has been somewhat OK.... for the 3 times I used it, it was pretty darn close. It drifted a little when driving highway speeds, but crap, close enough for me most times. I think my phone is a late build... I waited for a while to pick one up due to the glass shortage that occurred earlier... curious, can we tell when our units left the factory, and if so, I wonder if they are coming out with different GPS chips on them?
One last thought - did you do a batt pull once your new ROM was in place? Just shooting off ideas... I hope it starts working better for you... I am really liking this phone compared to my Bold 9000.

I've never gotten a lock with either of my Captivates; What do you mean by a battery pull? Just lug the battery out of the phone while it's running and put it back in? I'm curious as to how that would be beneficial to GPS. (I've done a reset, but that's about it)

Yes, exactly. Pull the battery out, wait for a minute, put it back in and reboot. In many cases, this has (for me) fixed weird little issues after ROM updates etc. I have no evidence that this would affect the GPS in your case, but I thought I'd mention any tips/methods that have helped me in the past.
Yeah a battery pull usually solves a lot of issues when upgrading roms...I've had t so that twice.

[ROM-FIX] CM 6.xx, Ruby 1.1.1 and Shadowrom Radio and Wifi - Drops and Reboots Fix

Latest Cyanogenmod nightly number 97 (10/3/2010) has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch if you are running it or a newer one.
Back Story
Long story short, the Chinese group Miui mananged to get / build (not really sure) a new Radio Interface Layer for our HTC devices... I pulled this file out of the Nexus one build that they released and it works perfectly. Link to the Nexus1 version
Over in the Nexus one forum a few people have questioned where this Chinese group got some of the files they're using, as they're really bleeding edge (at least thats what they say in the N1 forum). This newer / different RIL file seems to fix the issues we're facing with random phantom reboots while wifi is on. Also included in this is the issue where the signal bars show an "x" for a second or two after connecting to a wifi hotspot. Also fixed are issues where the radio signal drops before / after receiving a call that plagues AOSP builds (ruby and CM for sure).
Cyanogenmod 6.xx
This works on the 6.xx versions as well as the Nightlies.
NOTICE: As of Oct 2nd this has been "committed" so I assume the nightly that comes out this evening will have the fix built in. Check it out
Latest nightly number 97 has the new ril baked in. No need to use this patch.
Ruby 1.1.1
This works for Ruby. If you are wanting the BT Media Streaming audio fix as well, please see this thread. They are two separate installs.
Shadowrom
It has been confirmed that this also works for Shadowrom.
Bugs
I honestly don't know of any yet... but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Only a handful of us have been testing this thing out on the inc so far. Figured more people might want to check it out.
Credit
I take no credit for the fix. The Miui group built/got it(not sure which), I simply happened to be playing around with some files and noticed the side effects. Thanks again to Jermaine for letting me know more about the rom (and the fact that they weren't plagued by our reboot issues) in the first place so I could start digging...
Of course thanks go out to the entire ruby and cyanogenmod teams, without them we wouldn't have these fun roms. Lastly, IncredibleDoes for doing the Inc port of miui that opened our eyes to it.
Installation
- Download the file and place it on your SD card.
- Load up Rom Manager and hit "Install rom from SD card," select the file.
- I'd probably make a nandroid backup if you haven't recently just in case... no wipe has been needed.
Disclaimer
If this messes up your phone, not my fault Was tested by about 30 people so far, and no issues that we've seen. Please make a nandoid backup just in case.
THIS IS FOR AOSP roms listed above ONLY. Please do NOT install it on any sense based roms.

Isn't this just cosmetic? Or because the phone is switching from 3G to 1x? I've never dropped a call while toggling WiFi on...

Not that I can tell... so far the mere fact that the wifi isn't causing reboots anymore is the main reason I'm putting this out there...
anything else is just gravy.

Fixing the WiFi reboots would be great. Though, strangely, I'm at 110 hours uptime with the WiFi on... I guess it'll take a while to verify this fix works.

Installed the fix on Ruby 1.1.1. Running stock Ruby Kernal (This kernal has been the best overall performance Kernal for me on Ruby). Will report back results
I've installed the file you sent me... and holy crap. It seems to work. Really hope this does it or at least puts koush in the right direction.

I am packing up a BT-Fix for Ruby right now but will keep it separate, to not complicate things.

I really dont believe its the wifi. Its when the 3g turns on or off when the issues happen, which is when you leave or enter a wifi area. I turned 3g off and didnt use it for 2 days with wifi on the whole time with no reboots. I've have the lockup with just 3g on as others have noted. Also I believe that the lockups and the reboots are a separate issue. I have yet to see where any dev said it was the wifi directly, and with the known issues of 3g+froyo it points to 3g not wifi.
So, if you turn wifi off and are in a good 3g area then you will unlikely lose 3g much if at all, but if you have signal issues then the reboots still exist.
If we are going to find out what the problem is we need to setup test groups.
1 - no wifi, no 3g
2 - no wifi, 3g on
3 - wifi on, no 3g
4 - wifi on, 3g on
Make sure everyone is using the same rom/radio.

That's a possibility, but I think I'm in a good 3G area, and the majority of my movements are in a pretty small geographic area. I'll get reboots when my phone is just sitting on a table or in my pocket though in an area w/ strong signal.

I think what we'd really need is for the testers to check all 4 combinations. There's too much geographic variance to have a bunch of different people testing these combinations unless some lived very close to each other.

The glgps daemon, jupiter.xml, and you! (How to make the GPS behave better)

Hi Vibrant owners!
I made a post over in the Captivate forum about how we can configure the GLGPS daemon in our phones (this is used to control the GPS behavior)
Attached are some update.zips with a new glgps daemon pulled from the Nexus S, secgps.conf and a jupiter.xml configuration inside. The GPS chipset is common among all SGS models, so this should work for you. Please try it, feedback is appreciated!
Sweet!
Sent from the helm of the vibrant Galaxy S!
I thought the vibrant does not use the jupiter.xml
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I know at least one model of Vibrant does (Bell), not sure about the others (CDMA does not I believe)
With the vibrant froyo leaks, we now use gpsd and jupiter.xml Samsung decided to make it the same across the board. At least for the i9k, cap and vib. Not sure aboit the epic and fascinate though

i really don't understand these "fix your gps" threads. Hasn't it already been fixed a while back with the newer 2.2 roms? Mine is just fine now.

Wow. Your like saying that people doesn't have to fix their gps if yours has been already fixed.
im saying if you've upgraded to a new rom like most here then it should have been fixed. what kind of fix are you expecting a 100/100 Sat lock the instant you turn on the GPS app?

Yeah it should have been fixed, but to some it isn't. Maybe because of the hardware or other issues.

I'm not expecting that, we all just want it to be usable like having a better accuracy.
sorry it's getting late and my brain is not fully functional ^_^ though it is sorta confusing how the same hardware can produce different results with the newer 2.2 roms.
It's not the same though.
The antenna got revised in October 2010. See the post about the gps fix in the Vibrant general forum.

It seems the newer antenna did fix it - the older design is unreliable so "identical" hardware can have different GPS performance depending on how much the connection has worked loose.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970
if you compare to HTC model like HD2, you will see that vibrant is very slow altough gps is fixed...I once use htc hd2 with MDJ mod for android GPS is real fast, never more than one minutes from start ( case compared when u totally delete gps data) I don't know how HTC did it...just for your guy to concern
My GPS has never worked and I've tried every ROM and every fix. Sure I can get a lock on 8 of 12 satellites, and I can easily get 10 foot accuracy. As soon as I try to use Navigation, it sucks. It'll jump around by a few feet here and there, and that's enough to totally throw off the navigation. All of a sudden it thinks I'm the wrong street and its telling me to turn around.
im sorry guys, that sucks. mine has been fine for a while now. and i navigate quite a bit as I am new to Cali. Initially it truly pissed me off when I was on 2.1, telling me i'm staying on the highway when i infact took the off ramp etc... lol. I'd get a replacement.
Can anyone ever say the word GPS without sending everyone into a pissing frenzy?
BACK ON TOPIC:
OP which one do you recommend starting out on for us Vibrant owners?
I highly.. very highly recommend Sombionix' Nero 3. I've used a lot of roms and this one is very very fast. And I usually refrain from saying "fast" because most phones are initially fast when new roms are installed but this one definitely deserves it even after massive app installs and use.
I tryed out the google version and it killed my GPS it sees 12 birds but won't connect to any.
Which do I install? I have a Tmobile Vibrant. You have 3 files listed. Thanks.

Any way to get wifi calling in jellybean?

That's it...just want to see if I can add it somehow to one of the ROMs I've tried. (My battery life is suffering from radio standby searching in dead zones I frequent, like my house).

I don't think there is any wifi calling (like the stock ROM) in any JellyBean ROM. I think it was available in CM9, but, in general, it didn't work for me and it wasn't worth keeping. I liked wifi calling for my overseas travel, but I have learned to live without it.
I would like to be wrong about this, because I would also like to have wifi calling. Skype isn't a good general purpose solution.
Good luck.

I have Skype and google voice. Both are fine with wifi and with data plan but that does not fix the radio searching for towers draining the battery overnight (as indicated by the battery use applet.)
On the stock rom, with wifi calling, the battery lasted three or four days, I'd like to get back to that level while using jellybean.

That's what I was afraid of, maybe one day T-Mobile will have a build with it we can take it from...who knows.
As of now WiFi calling is only available for JB on the HTC One and the S3 it is now part of the rom and can't be ported over.

RIP HTC Vivid

It saddens me that our beloved phone is officially dead. I hope some dev out there challenges our desire for a 5.0 update by destroying hardware limitations, battery consumption and the occational bugs. I'll be waiting for the day that Vivid rises from the ashes.
I'm still using mine since 2012, it's a good, reliable phone but admittedly has awful battery life.
Well, if it's hard to love, and you loved it. You're married to it.
RIP
Still using mine every day, thought admittedly as a WiFi-only device. Still a great screen and camera though. Just wish I could get a download of this custom ROM though as all the links in the thread have not surprisingly expired:
