HTC One Headphone Buttons - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I grabbed a shinny new One today & really love it so far.
However its plagued with the same infuriating headphone remote problem as my older One X.
Long pressing the headphone button launches Google now(useless. rarely need it)
Double clicking redails the last used number (dangerous & bad design)
Its bad enough we only have 1 button, now google ruined that too.
Of course they are not easily re-configurable. Probably impossible without unlocking the bootlocker which I'd rather not do at this stage.
Can someone tell me once & for all why there isn't working 3 button headsets, with volume control for modern Android Phones?
Its 2013, & i'm still fumbling around with an expensive phone trying to skip tracks.

That's odd. The One S supported 3 buttons. I don't have my One yet, but I figured they'd support that. I remember using my Beats earbuds that came with the HTC Incredible on the One S.
EDIT: I guess in that sense the HTC Incredible supported 3 button headsets as well. I guess HTC got rid of that when they slimmed down sense to be more like aosp.
EDIT EDIT: I used to use Headset Button Controller for my Nexus 4. There's a free version on play store.

I use the Monster beats 3 button headset and that works fine for playing and skipping tracks.
Cheers

Just received these last week, the sound quality is great, the design goes well with the phone, and the remote and mic works perfectly.

Thanks guys.
I bought a set of these today. Luckily, the salesman let me try them in the store.
http://www.htc.com/www/accessories/htc-stereo-headphones/
They work fine. All three buttons. Shame non of my expensive headphones work but these don't sound that bad. Too much bass on the HTC ONe but thats for another thread

I was pissed the other day when I was on my motorcycle trying to use the button to skip tracks and I kept calling people.
The design of the buttons is faulty. Makes absolutely no SENSE at all.

Hope this helps
-Nokia purity hd and inear
-htc beats solo and htc urbeats
- souls SL99s (inear)
-nocs ns 200h (inear)
Also just so every one knows Nokia Lumia,Htc Samsung galaxy ,Sony all use Industry-standard headphone jack. So basically that means any headphones that works for one works for all.
The reason I know is because I tested in AT&T store. I own the Nokia purityhd and htc urbeats.

Replacement Headphones for Samsung Focus

I recently destroyed my OM headphones that came with the phone and had the arduous task of finding a compatible headset that offered quality and functionality.
I found out that these do not work
iBeats Dr Dre edition- mic does not work and volume buttons do not work (100)
Skull Candy- Mic does not work but the play and pause buttons do(60)
and finally the one that did work
V-moda vibe duo- full functionality but only comes with an answer button which does play an pause. (100)
feel free to add your experience with purchased headsets
Sound quality was the best on V-moda, then iBeats, then skull candy
Skull candy is a company and not a specific headphones... they have many models. As for the skull candy full metal jackets, the mic does work. I cannot compare them to the others mentioned, but the sound is very good.
My Marshall Minors work on the focus. Not the cheapest but they are pretty cool looking and sound great.
this might be a little late but I need some new headphones for use at work and do not want to spend a lot. I searched "ehs60annbe" on amazon and found plenty of merchants selling what appear to be the exact headphones that come with the phone.
These ones are $6.83 +free shipping
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-EHS60...EEZO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299825988&sr=8-1
I lost my pair that came with the phone, so I was excited to see these.
I ordered a pair and they should arrive tomorrow.
If they are indeed the same as those that came with the phone, I might order me a couple more - I really liked them, and they worked perfectly with the phone (control wise).
Thanks for the post.

Unfortunately I'm having problems with these headphones - for some reason, the controls will only increase the volume - you can't decrease the volume.
Perhaps I received a "bad" pair? Anyone else tried these?
The Focus has a VERY clean audio output. I've fed it into my home stereo and was impressed with the detail and clairity. I listened with Etymotic 6i headphones and was blown away. After that, the included headset sounds muddy with a artificial bass boost.
For those who can afford to splurge on a headset, consider the Etymotic mc3
Any recommendations for matching the original pair that came with the Focus?
My priorities:
-Must be able to trigger voice control
-Must have working microphone
-Must be able to answer/hangup calls
-Must have volume up and down
-Must not be expensive
-Should be gel like for in-ear
I've tried iPhone ones, they don't do volume/up down.
I've tried tried the common silver Samsung one with one button - the button doesn't pick up or hangup calls.
Help!
This ones looks identical to the oem ones and they are pretty cheap!:

Headphones that WILL be fully compatible with wp7, and sound pretty decent as well.
Though it will probably be a few more months until they are released.
Anyone had any luck finding headphones with working volume and answer call buttons? Preferably ones with a more sturdy cover over the connector since my cable broke because of too much twisting and bending.

jkimrey, Did you find a solution? I have the same problem. I read somewhere that it's because Samsung is using a newer standard that allows for TV Out or something. But this is really annoying.
same here i cant find any that the buttons fully work on, that i'm willing to buy. I got some on amazon that only volume up works. my wifes blackberry ones that came with her torch work but i cant find them anywhere. The cat ate my original ones

I can say that these are the ones i got from amazon same thing with the button... It doesnt even look the same as the OEM ones.
Has anyone tried the Zagg Smartbuds? they appear to have all the controls that one could want [play/pause, skip FW/BK, Volume, answer/hangup(I assume would work with voice activation as well)] but they are a bit pricey.
Am I the only one who would like a non-in ear headphone that works with the Focus?
At this point, I just want something that's compatible! I have had zero luck so far in getting earphones compatible with my Focus. I too found the common Samsung ones. Thankfully, I got two pairs for less than $10. Guess what they work perfectly with? My effing iPod touch. GAH.
I honestly have no idea why this is so hard...
V-Moda =
I have to second the V-Moda headphones. I'm currently using them in conjunction with Monster replacement foam tips (medium) and the sound is amazing (albeit the highs are a little muffled but the bass is punchy and responsive). It is a one button setup which bothered me at first, but with a dedicated volume rocker on the device it's really not so much of an issue that I thought it would be. If the Focus only had an equalizer of some sort to bring out the highs, these headphone would be perfect. The mic quality in the headset is beautiful and these 'phones are as durable as all heck (they've been: stuck in a car door for 50 miles, went through the wash, stepped on, trampled, chewed on by a dog, caught on bushes etc.) and have never even began to show signs of wear. If you can live with pocket adjusting the volume, I would recommend getting these.
I should probably mention that I DO NOT work for V-Moda despite how it sounds... I just happen to be a sort of audiophile and while the Focus itself doesn't have the BEST sound quality (I'm coming from a Cowon S9 lol) these heaphones help to bring out its above average playback capability. Another side note is that in response to the OP, the Modas don't only pause/play/answer call/hang up. While listening to music playback you can double tap the button to skip to the next song or triple tap it to skip back.

The iPhone headphones work decently. They don't fully work (microphone / volume up and down), but pause / play / next song/ previous song does work. Before the mango update, I was only able to get the play to work. It seems Microsoft is slowly making the iPhone headphones compatible with the Focus.

Does anybody have a link to a hardware specification for what these in-line buttons actually do for the WP7 phones?
Pretty much all the headphones with in-line controls and a microphone have 4 conductors which are:
- left-audio
- right-audio
- common/ground
- signalling/mic
Here is the spec for IPod Shuffle remote headsets:
pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/iphone_headphone_pinout.shtml
david.carne.ca/shuffle_hax/shuffle_remote.html
So the three buttons operate as follows:
Button 1 - short to ground through 10K resistor (up)
Button 2 - short to ground (answer/hangup/play/pause)
Button 3 - short to ground through 4.7K resistor (down)
But the ipod remote (no mic) has an onboard microcontroller that receives DC power on the mic line as well and is used as a sort of authentication device allowing the Ipod Shuffle to uniquely identify the remote through a challegage response tone scheme. I'm not sure if this is included in the iphone remote cause the circuitry would probably interfere with the mic signal.
Headphones with only one button always short mic/4th conductor to ground so that will always work, but I bet WP7 and Iphone/ipad specs for the resistors for the up/down buttons are different.
I hope WP7 remotes don't have the microcontroller.
I may disassemble my OEM Samsung headphones and try to figure this out. It would be nice to get some Shure or Sennhesier hi-end headphones and plug them into a little adapter that provided to correct buttons. All the hi-end earbuds are iphone/ipad-only.
Presumably I could just cut off the ear-buds on the samsung headphones and solder some of the Shure connectors on there - then just plug in the Shure ear-buds. (all high-end Shure earbuds have replaceable cords

Compatible Headphones

DOES anyone know of any compatible headphones with controls for the Focus S. I was planning on getting some Beats Tour, but I read a review that they didn't work on the Focus S. Also, I have lost all my silicone tips from the ones that came in the box, so that is kinda out of the picture.
Thanks!
Try the ur beats ( not the ibeats) they say made for htc sold at AT&T stores worked on hd 7
you can even try skullcandy
Nokia purity
Check these out! http://www.munitio.com/products/
I dont know if they are compatible with our focus s but they sure looks cool.
They have Inline single button microphone for hands free call and playback functions as you requested and most of the reviews are positive.
If you no longer want headphones with controls I can recommend the EP series from Creative... Im currently using EP630 and although there were a few years ago they were released they still kick ass with exellent soundquality.
My S is Missing Headphone Control Features
On my old Focus I could tap the headphone pause control 2x and it would skip up through the preset station list. And I could tap it three times and it would skip down through the list.
My new Focus S does neither. It merely pauses no matter how I tap it. Sometimes it doesn't even pause it.
Does anybody else have this feature?
Check it on an old Focus if you want too.

[Q] Beats Audio

I'm planning on getting the HTC One, and a major problem I found with my last device was that Beats earphones with ControlTalk didn't seem to work properly, more specifically the mic and the volume toggle buttons served no function whatsoever.
So my question is, does control talk work on the HTC One? And is there any additional feature that comes with the HTC One that works exclusively with Beats devices, such as the device recognizing that a Beats device has been plugged in? (Obviously im asking because it comes with beats audio).
Thanks in advance

I got my one with some nice free solo beats, a case and two screen protectors, the headphones are phenomenal, but the buttons don't work, at least not at the moment anyway. But In all honesty, to get this sound for free, for me kind of overrides it.

and that would mean only the center button works, not the up and down volume buttons right? If i remember correctly, that's the deal with every android phone right? They're just not made to use 3 button controls.
And ontop of that, is there anything specific the One does for beats devices?

Yea the mics ok and the button for pausing music, not sure about answering calls with it though, i find myself shouting when i use headphones for talking, and i get a bit conscious about it. I know how stupid people look when shouting to themselves on trains etc, i don't want to be that person
i doubt there is anything specific for beats device
those 3 buttons only work if its designed to work on android device, otherwise only the center button would work.
If the mic and the inline control is designed for iPhone/iPhone compatible, then the volume control would not work on any android device due to the difference in wiring in the control.
There is also a problem with HTC devices that are jelly bean or above, google now will take over the long press function no matter what app you use, and double click would call the last person you dialed no matter what unless you install "headset button control" from market. The developer of that app included a fix for HTC device to work around the double click issue, but unfortunately that app doesn't work very well with the stock music app on the HTC One. Most of the command you make using the control will be ignored due to a change in the stock music app, and the developer said its a known issue with the HTC One stock music app, and currently there is no way to fix it. He recommend those have this problem to switch to other music player.

I just want the mic to work, regardless if i use it for calls. Cause in my opinion it just feels as though the earphones aren't being used to their full capability, they come with a mic...so there shouldn't be a reason for compromise. Beats aren't cheap, and id rather not have limited functionality cause because my phone doesn't support them.
All in all, when im listening to music and a call comes, its really annoying having to pause the music, take out the earphones, THEN answer the call. And if for some reason you forget to pause the music before taking out the earphones, the speakers will start blasting the music after the calls over, which is much more embarrassing.

One button is still better than no buttons on my current phone, and the fact that the mic will work, is the most important part for me. So as long as the mic works, and even just one button works, its worthwhile. I just feel as though im getting a combo, with the One and beats earphones, i just get a genuine feel that im using earphones that are made for this device, instead of the ill compatibility with my current phone.
As for the problem with HTC devices, i dont see that to be much of an issue, as Sense isn't that appealing to me and i REALLY like personalizing my phone (i.e. different launchers, music players, and even custom roms when the time comes) so i probably will download my own music player within a few days of getting the phone.
I know this might go a bit off topic, but essentially i need to choose between the One and the S4, and the tipping point for me is the beats audio on the One. Also, i think hardware's more important for me as i like customizing my phone anyways.
Theres just one question i have left, that needs a slight explanation. So i live in Canada, and im currently with Bell, but most of my contract is left so i cant get a new phone. My friend, whose done is contract and is happy with his current phone, is willing to upgrade to a new phone and give the new device to me, while he keeps his old phone. Like i said i need to decide between the S4 or One...or any other device but i believe those are the top 2. And the problem is, hes currently on Rogers, and the phones going to be locked, and im more than confident that these providers are not willing to unlock the phone for me. So the question is, which device do you think there will be an unlock for first, letting me use it with my provider? Im not into paid unlocking as i believe it is not currently illegal and sketchy, so which device do you think will get it first, free of cost?

When a call comes through, the music pauses automatically. I'm sure someone can map the buttons on the beats headphones to answer calls etc, if they don't work already.
Have you tried the headset control app in the market? may be of use to you?...
Love the Beats Audio sound! Especially via the Aux cable in the car. I've been able to get past the headphones functions with great sound!:good:

And when the call ends, the music turns back on. The ISSUE was that i would have to take out the earphones to answer the call, since the mic doesnt work with my current device. But as long as the mic works using the One, then theres no issue, as i can answer the call using the earphones. Thanks for clearing that up

[Earbuds/Headphones] With Volume Control

Hello,
I saw this annoucement today > Sprint Exclusive Harman Kardon Phone with special earbuds
This got me to thinking, a lot of the Harman Kardon earbuds have volume control and answer/pause/hangup buttons. In theory, the hardware on this edition is identical to the other HTC M8s in the world. This is technically just a software optimization and a packaging of name brand earbuds. So I wanted to start a thread for Earbuds/Headphones that people are using that have working volume controls on the M8.
I am using some Note 3 (Samsung) earbuds with volume and call button. The volume bottons (Up - Skip forward a track, Down - Skip Back a Track) and the Call button (pause/play music) work, but not as expected. I know it may be a combination of software and hardware, but figured there has to be some thing that can work on this phone. It seems silly to have a phone with superior sound quality on the auxiliary output as well as the front facing speakers, with limited options for earbuds/headphones.

From what I have seen in my quick study into both the M8 & M8HK firmware & rom, it looks to be 100% software. You can actually find all the references to the HK software & enable it in settings by modifying the existing xml in the ACC folder. It won't do anything YET, just enable the options in settings, but once someone has a chance to do some digging & testiing, I am certain it will be an easy thing to implement. There are also already a few headphones that will work with HTC devices that can control volume. There is a thread just like this with lists in some of the older device threads, like the One X, One + & One M7.
obviously the stockers that come with the m8 work. also i have used a set of jaybird bluebuds but they are full bluetooth however everything works as it should.
since trying the stockers out last night, i have to say they sound better plugged in compared to wireless (obviously due to better connection and amplifiers etc). this got me thinking what others are available. i have been looking at the bowers and wilkins c5 earbuds. not the cheapest not the most expensive available but they are advertised as apple compatible. apparantly when used with android only the volume controls dont work. has anyone tried these out on a android.
I purchased the OEM headphones from HTC's site:
http://www.htc.com/us/accessories/htc-stereo-headphones/
And even these don't control the phone properly. Which sucks because the website says fully compatible with the M8.

That's one ugly HTC One M8! Looks like a huge iPhone 3g! I'm very happy with boomsound and the stock equalizers, music has never sounded better in my car streaming via BT. I've always used the latest Jaybird BT headphones. Once you go BT headphones it's hard to go back to wire/cord.
Volume control and play/pause should work with pretty much all headphones. Previous/next track and scrolling - not. This is because Apple has some very weird patents for music controls via cable. So nothing is gonna change in this matter anytime soon.
Not really true. Just about every earphones I've used that have 3 buttons don't control volume on Android, but they do on iOS. If they work on Android the pin out must be different.

That's exactly my issue. Stock ear buds that come with phone only have answer pause button. And any I've tried with volume only skip track. Sucks about HTC OEM stereo ones because I almost bought those. The search continues for volume control ear buds. I know wireless prob fixes problem, but I'm old school and like wired. Also, don't want to have one extra thing to charge. Still resisting Bluetooth as long as I can because most last 8 or so and I would have to charge daily. I use earbuds all day.

I've been using Sony XBA-2VPs on my GS4 (with volume wheel instead of buttons) without button mapping apps. Went to use them on the M8 and still works like a charm.
I believe a-JAYS Five would also still work on the M8 and that has volume buttons.

I've owned the c5's for about 2 years now and they work flawlessly. Control every thing without issue. And sound better than any other earbuds available imo.

Quick question: is the wheel a.. Potentiometer? If so, this has nothing to do with the phone itself.
About the apple dilemma: apple has a different wiring. Most of the headphone producers build for the majority, which they think are apple users. They have to decide. If it works on Android, the Apple people are mad. If it works for Apple devices, the Android people are: silent.
It's our fault.
Also, many OEMs that build Android devices do their own thing, which does not help, either.
It'd be nice to see some unity. But that's not going to happen soon, if at all.

Weird. I'm running Skyfall with barely any mods on top of it.
The headphones are working as follows:
Volume + = Next track track
Volume - = Previous track
Middle button = Play/pause
Are you running a customer ROM?

Volume + = Next track track
Volume - = Previous track
Middle button = Play/pause

I have tried several 3 button wired earbud and volume control control don't work. Even my wife G2 has the same issue and it is stock 4.4.2. What I searched Google it is bug in 4.4.2.

Gotta go wireless

That's exactly my issue. Stock ear buds that come with phone only have answer pause button. And any I've tried with volume only skip track. Sucks about HTC OEM stereo ones because I almost bought those. The search continues for volume control ear buds. I know wireless prob fixes problem, but I'm old school and like wired. Also, don't want to have one extra thing to charge. Still resisting Bluetooth as long as I can because most last 8 or so and I would have to charge daily. I use earbuds all day.

I've had these for quites a while and love them! I hear ya on being old school, but these last 6-8 hours easy. They charge quickly and sound great. Volume control, water/sweat resistant, a little pricey but a worthy investment.

I'm running InsertCoin right now but they worked on the stock ROM also. That was one of the first things I tested when I got the phone. I work overnight and ride around listening to music all night. Having working 3 button headphones are very important to me.
Just chiming in... I just received the HTC RC E190 set from Amazon. On my M8, completely stock, AT&T ROM, with both the stock Music app as well as Play Music, the volume + button will skip back one track, and the volume - button skips forward one track.
I got the original htc earbuds and for me they just work great. first i use them with an htc one x+ but hey just stop working sometimes. but now with the htc one m8 they work all the time. there is just one thing i dont like, is that i cant use the voice control when the screen is locked. i think it would be great if htc gave us the option to activate this,.
the sound of this earbuds are just great for me, the bass responde is very nice, but now i want to try something like the Dual Driver 3-button Black (Android) from degauss labs, they cost like 100 dollars, or the Sabotage Royale 3-button Black (Android) that costs 60 dollars
i hope this can help you
Hi, i've bought these: http://www.plantronics.com/uk/product/backbeat-go-2 .
Very practice and the sound is good.

Moto G 2014 Dual SIM - Bose soundtrue in-ear earphones not working

I've had my phone since January 2005 and I've been using the Bose in-ear earbuds since they came out.
My current ones are starting to show signs of wear (cable starting breaking down near one of the buds) and thus I was seeing on replacing them and keeping with Bose, since I really like the sound and the design of these earbuds. So I passed by the Bose shop and bought the Bose Soundtrue earbuds, designed for Samsung and Android phones, that come with a line in remote.
However, when I tested them out, the remote was not working. Pressing vol+ was restarting the song that was playing, and the same when the play/pause button was being pushed. The vol- did nothing. I tried using a third-party app to make it work (Headset Control Center from Degauss Lab) but to no avail, it did not. And to make it worse, the Bose Rep tried to call me on my phone and I could not even pick up the call with the button (middle one). In the end I returned my purchase.
So I'm bummed out. I have no clue what to do. I really like Bose and would like to stay with them. But if I really cannot get their earbuds to work... not sure if I will.
Anyone have any idea what I could do to make it work?
Or alternatively, are there similar earbuds (sound and design-wise) that would actually work with the Motorola G from 2014? I really abhor full in-ear earbuds for the closed out feeling I get when wearing them and the fact I'm less aware of my surroundings. I bike a lot in Brussels and I want to be able to hear what goes on around me (to do anything else is suicidal).
thanks in advance for your replies.
Bump. Is there really no-one around who can help?
Hey there,
I was using the same headphones from Bose since a year or so now on both Xperia Z and Z1C.
In mid August, the remote - which was working perfectly - stopped working.
I called the after sale services, thinking the something was wrong with the headphones...
They changed them to brand new ones that I received today. They don't work anymore.
Something happened between nov. 2014 and aug. 2015 ( my guess is lollipop - but I'm not even sure), and I can't use the earplugs the way thety were properly working before (play, pause, vol up / down - double click for skip...
This is a bummer.
I have a similar problem with Lollipop on my HTC One E8, with a single button wired headset: after the upgrade to Lollipop, the single-button control via my wired headset no longer works.
It never worked right without using the Degauss Headset Control Center, but before lollipop, using Degauss I could control it.
But since Lollipop, a single click results in multiple clicks - one, two, three, four even five clicks!
Even though I setup the Degauss app to map all those to play/pause, it sometimes it still skips to the next or previous track, and sometime it won't pause or resume.
I've been looking high and low for a solution, or others hitting the same problem(s).
I did not find a solution yet.
I gone and bought the Bose Sountrue anyways as I really like the sound and the way the earbuds fit in my ear. The mic works fine when I call and receive a call (I have to accept it from the phone as the buttons do not work). I do think it is a hardware problem of the Moto G so most likely will change to a compatible phone in the future.
