Thanks for this. Was hoping for a non-root tethering option that actually worked. I've rooted my past 3 phones, but trying to live without it... as long as I can handle it
Actually, I don't see any need to root and rom with Sense 5, I personally like it and it's stable for me. I'm only missing some seldomly used root apps. Tethering is the only reason I have right now to actually break and root. Just trying to not do that this time around.

Bloatware is always nice to remove.

Thanks
Great instructions, easy to follow... now rooted!

Good to see you here QBKing77

Much appreciated! I was able to root and install recovery with these instructions. Have you any more tips or videos on the horizon for us new One owners?
I like how the One beat the S4 on the fresh unboxing benchmark test you conducted on the S4 video.

Yep there will be more soon!

have you played around with any of the kernels or roms? im getting my sprint one this week and i was just wondering if there were any you recommend. as far as roms go ive been looking at viperRom or Tranquility. i figured i should start with sense-based and see how like it. for kernels im thinking of going with wolfpack. elementalx looks good but it says its not compatible with the sprint version. any thoughts?

What did you do after the root?

So, as most of you know a root for the AHD came out yesterday. I wanted to say thank you to everyone that worked hours and hours on getting the root, even though Dan gets the money lol. But there are many new comers to android out there, including myself. Coming from the iphone I can tell you everything you can do once you jailbreak and iDevice, but what all have you guys done after you rooted your device. I have owned one android and played around for a while on many, but most of which were completely unlocked and had new roms installed ect. ect. So I thought it would be a good idea for people to be able to post what all they have used the root for so far, so maybe we can use those ideas and make this phone even more awesome.
The first thing I did do was calibrate my battery and have noticed a little bit better life today than I do most days.
I also uninstalled some of AT&T's annoying bloatware (which IMO belongs on NO phone)
So share what you did and give some ideas to all the readers!!!
Thanks again Dan for the root and I know Matt worked for hours and hours on it, so I would like to thank you too

Great thread idea!
First i removed att bloatware/unused ringtones and notifications
Changed boot animation
Gave already owned apps root permissions to do things like one touch reboot, auto dpi changing.
And right now I'm working on changing the color of my softkeys

Once i get home from my business trip i plan on porting cwm and seeing what we can do from there

Lol I was thinking the same thing. The EB40 is an awesome upgrade and I def considering it. I just am at home and work where my phone can be charged all of the time anyways. Not to mention once we get some bloat free roms that run more efficiently, the EB20 should be okay.
After rooting,I install RootExplorer,SQ Lite,Titanium Backup,etc.

[Q] what is the best free backup programme to use?

Hi guys, i wanna perform a downgrade back to jellybean because kit kat really gets on my nerves for multiple reasons..
The reason i have not done this yet is purely because i dont want to lose anything i have on my phone, basically I'm looking for a backup programme which backs up absolutely everything i have on my internal storage, including 3rd party apps I've installed and set up, downloaded videos which are stored within apps and everything else pretty much THEN once I have performed the downgrade, to be able to just restore the backup and have my phone identical to how it is now only with jellybean instead of kitkat. Is this possible? Cheers in advance.
Titanium Backup is Good but sometimes gives errors.. I personally use Super Backup Pro it never fails very good for App and other items backup and restore
Sent from my Xperia Z1 using Tapatalk
For apps titanium for pics, mega, 50GB for free, never runs out like dropbox will.
If you're going to get titanium, pay for the pro version, you'll thank me later when you're restoring your apps.

This! Especially when switching ROMs often, you will find the added features from the pro version helpful.
I was greatful for being able to restore the device ID so apps would just work like before.

Very true, using the non pro version will work but it's a mundane task to have to allow and then install each and every app one after another, very useful if you plan on testing different roms with your apps, the automated process is so much quicker and it'll save you time.
Half way through installing 300+ apps you'll be thinking of that pro key.
Plus the do deserve your cash, amazing app titanium.
When looking into these backup apps including titanium it says I need to be rooted to use the features i want. I'm not rooted and dont really plan to be. It's a shame really because i moved over to android so i had more freedom and control over my device and at first I had as much control as i needed with jellybean (more is better obviously) but the kitkat update pretty much made every sd enabled phone into a poor device. Plus I find the wifi range is really bad on kitkat but jellybean had so much better range. My point is that it's annoying that i should have to root my phone to make it as i want it and be able to toy with the settings when really it should already either have these features or be better optimised. Now I'm wondering if i should just root my phone rather than downgrading it? If i root it can i tweak the wifi range? And can I allow my apps to have better access to my sd card? Also if i upgrade to 4.4.4 can i still root the phone after? Cheers
If you root, it is easier to do on 4.4.4, and you can fix the sd card issue.

Fantastic help from you guys, much appreciated. It's good to actually be on a forum without morons! Lol
Ok so im now possibly leaning toward the rooting route.. Would you advise getting it done by someone in a shop or doing it myself? I'm pretty competent but if it's a risky process then I'd rather it be done properly! Are there any good tutorials for rooting from 4.4.4? Also does rooting wipe the phone memory? Cheers
And any app recommendations for rooted phones that allow me to sort out the sd access problems, also apps that allow me to tinker with my wifi range etc.. Just any good full customisation apps really so i can really get this phone as it should be!

Xposed not working Verizon Nexus 5.1?!

Has anyone been able to get Xposed working on their Verizon Nexus 6 running Android 5.1? I've been trying all day and have searched and searched and followed all the workaround threads and nothing has worked. I cannot get Xposed working. I've tried the SELinux mode changer app, tried the initd script, tried flashing the zip that sets linux to permissive. Nothing is working.
So has anyone been able to get it to work on their Verizon NExus 6? If you did please share what method worked for you..

Xposed got big because it brought customization to many phones that had root but locked bootloaders. It's a little less useful when you're on a custom ROM but there's a lot of app hacks. I like it to do simple things like save all my Snapchats without notifying people or unlimited skips in Pandora.
Not to mention some of the top devs prefer to work on Xposed rather than ROMs since it isn't device specific. So a stock 5.0.2 ROM with the Gravity Box module has more customization features than most of our current ROMs do. Here's the full module repository:
http://repo.xposed.info/module-overview

Xposed does a heck of a lot more than just block ads. The uses for it are almost endless. It allows almost limitless customization. Everything from UI modifications to, unlimited Pandora skips. It literally gives you all the options of a really really feature filled custom rom while still running the stock rom. Take some time and look through all the xposed modules for it and all the things they can do. That should give you an idea of how much you can do with it.

For me its the little things. Like crappalinks. Don't ya hate how tapatalk does a link hijack? Fixed. Want to use Google voice to text with Swype. Fixed. Hate the stupid "hey dummy, you are using a vpn, that you know, you like installed and set up and launched?" Fixed. Removes a lot of little annoyances that the custom ROM devs are too busy making the **** work to begin with to address.
Also, Gravity Box, lol. The last six months or so of my use of my old S4 was on a Google Edition ROM port. It was by far the best performing ROM, but it also lacked features, kind of like the stock based ROMs here. Gravity Box brought almost all of the features of custom ROMs to the GE ROM.

Xposed is a framework that allows you to "inject" new functions, settings, code into any ROM or app. For example, you may want a custom rom so you can customise your notification quick settings. With xposed, you can install a custom module that will allow that without changing the rom. If no rom has all the features you want, find the feature you want as an xposed module and add it.. Thats what the fuss is about. Its very flexible.,
Here is one of my favourite modules on this device...

Actually I found out about adfree and tried it. Still get ads in apps. Of course YouTube still has ads too which I don't expect will be fixed until we get xposed back.
Xposed is awesome and I cannot wait to get it on 5.1. So someone asked what does it do/why use it? There are many reasons.
You want to keep the original OS after root but still want all of the features of cyanogenmod or whatever. Xposed has a lot of them and more. For instance you could set your verizon phone to tether with a click of a button, add a date in the top toolbar, change colors of things, add battery %, get rid of ads, etc. Just tons of awesome things. With my gNex I always just flashed new roms when I wanted new stuff. But with my moto X I wanted to keep the OS and still get those advantages so I used xposed and really liked it. Now with the n6 I again really like the OS so I do not want to flash a new rom so xposed it is (once its working).
I think xposed is the way of the future. No more flashing roms and stuff when you can keep your OS and just add features you want.
I really just use it to get most of the customization I used to get from custom roms without the hassle of having to flash custom roms all the time.
It will come to 5.1 just need a little patience, it didn't take that long to get it on 5.0 and that was a much bigger update.

Yes the Android modding scene has changed drastically in the last few years. I remember when I first got into modding Android on my Verizon S3. That was also when xposed first came out. 3 flagship phone generations ago. I remember waiting for the Verizon Jelly bean update. 4.1.2 Hahaha. Gold old days. (only 3 years ago. Lol). We had actual leaked insecure bootloader on the s3. The last Samsung device on Verizon to gave a legit unlocked bootloader. Not the work around line Loki or stupid safestrap on the s5. That's why I quit the Samsung line last year and got an M8. Now I have a Nexus. Quitting Samsung was a good choice though by the looks of it, the S6 in all its variants sucks. If I wanted an iPhone I would get an iPhone.

Can you downgrade and root S5 active G870A?

I have looked over several pages and have not come across anything with good solid information or facts. I have a ATT S5 G870A (S5 Active). It has Android 5.0 on it. I have several questions actually.
1. Can you root this device on 5.0? I cant find anything on an active version. If so, can you point me to some good simplified layman terms instructions?
2. If not, how do I downgrade it.
After getting to a state where it is possible to root it. What do i need to complete that task? I am looking at getting Twisted Lolipop ROM on this device (IF IT IS POSSIBLE). That is the goal anyway. For some reason that ROM sticks out to me after reading about all of them. galaxys5root.com/sm-g900f-galaxy-s5-custom-roms/twi5ted-lollipop-rom-for-galaxy-s5/[/url]
I have watched the video on that site and it doesn't give out hardly any information. I am not even 100% sure it will work on an active on ATT. I dont want to trust some kid on youtube trying to tell me how to flash my phone without knowing if it is correct or not.
I am terribly sorry in advance if it has been asked before, but there are several discussions here, and lots have been updated somewhere in the hundreds of pages of information contained within them.
Thank you in advance,
Josh.
If u have bootloader 0c5 u can down grade then root the active.
If u have bootloader 0f2, 0f3 no u can not. There's no root for those yet.

Thank you. Is there a good way to back up the entire phone that is pretty easy in case I disable something that shouldn't be? I enabled the system processes in developing menu and thy wrestling are a lot of things running and lots of red at the top (assuming that is for the processors). And I don't have a whole phone full of games installed. Facebook, messenger, snap chat, a weather app. Then a few other random apps like a steak n shake app. No games at all.

Will anything past OE2 ever get Root? (OG5,OG7,etc..)

Anyone know of any active developement regarding the 925V variant? Way too nice not to have root.
There is zero development.
Zero KNOWN progress. Who knows for sure though. King root might work for us one day or it might not.
There wasn't much development on my tmboile s5 either. What phones do have good development these days?

I've stuck with my ATT Note3 on TMO, and TMO Note4. My son has a Sprint S6 Edge on TMO and it has surprisingly quite a bit of development. If I knew anything regarding locked vs. unlocked BL's I'd have a go with this 925V. Just really surprised at the lack of development for this device. Sucks!
Unfortunately, it seems that we've been left in the dark. Surely one of the many devs would have a thread going with some sort of progress update if any were working on it.
@spadz93 That's kinda what I'm thinking. Too bad. I use way too many root functions to even consider keeping my 925V. Really nice hardware either way. I'll probably look for a TMO variant.
Verizon sucks anyway. Worst service I've ever had. I liked T-Mobile way better. I have constant dropped calls, missed texts etc with Verizon.
I would pay good money to have some development for this device... without development, its useless... anyone interested? pm me =]

I wouldn't go so far as to call it useless... It's still a solid phone with decent hardware. Just because you can't root it and install custom ROMs doesn't make it useless. I'm more interested in a phone that works consistently everyday than I am the ability to push the hardware to the point of random reboots and overheating. Once I gave up root for 5.1 I've had next to zero issues with the phone and I like it much more.

Yea, my statement is a little exaggerated but no xposed is huge for me personally. I like to play with my phone and customize it. Without root and xposed, I can't do that like I could with my s4 so it bothers me
What upsets me is the fact that devs give up trying to root a phone if a solution doesn't come within a month or two, if the phone is the only variant that still doesn't have a root and it will take more effort than a few tweaks to do it. I've seen it over and over again with so many phones. If I knew how to even begin to look for a root on the phone and I had the money to buy phones that I could burn in the process, then I'd totally work at it.
what I dont understand is theres ppl with the Note 4 that are able to root 5.1.1 using King Root and no one has tried it on any firmware beyond OE2 for us yet..
I know one person said it worked for him on OF1 but need more to confirm before I update and update all my ROMs.

I enjoy it.... I also had it since day one. I unrooted mine and took the updates. Lol I need AOSP and we were never given the time to achieve it.
