Swype to unlock - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Maybe this is not the right place to put this message, but since it has to do with development I might as well try. There is some trent developing in the industry that you will be able to unlock your device by swiping over the screen. Like the Z10 and probably the Lumia 920. Since the powerbutton of our One is on top and for one hand rather difficult to reach it would be nice to have such an option too. Maybe not swype but hit Home and then Back or Home twice. I leave that to the smart guys. Is this possible or maybe is it already out there.

Ok, Thank you for your clearing this up. Now when I search the forum I won't find anything related to this feature. Any direction to where I have to search for please.

Search in this Android Development Forum or in the Original Android Development Forum for Kernels!
There are a bunch of Kernels which have these features. Just keep your eyes open :good:

Did you ever find anything on this? I'm looking for this for my s3 and I found one called pgm nexus

[Q] Possible to have buttons lit when screen is on?

With no tactile way of knowing where each button is it sure would be nice if we could have the buttons stay lit when the screen turns on. Can't take THAT much more battery. Or perhaps tie it in with the light sensor so that if it's dark they come on with the screen?
It might be possible but like most people memorize the buttons in like a week.

Seriously.. Q&A should be in Q&A.. I mean you even put a [Q] in your thread title.. shouldn't that be common sense..
[Q] Possible to post on the right section?
Please guys keep this forum clean for development
Moved to Q&A.
What the hell? I did put this in the Q&A forum, how did it get here???
Whoops, my bad...although it actually does belong in development as afaik it isn't a standard setting but would be nice if it were developed...
Anybody? Nobody else wants this?
Actually I would love if someone made this happen. My girlfriends keep complaining that she cant see the buttons when she is trying to use my phone.
Same for me
I am no dev but it would be nice to have button illumination tied to light sensors.
Please Devs think about it.
As a cheap work around - get a ROM that has BLN - keep a new email in your inbox to keep the lights on
I would also like to link the buttons to the screen backlight time. I have started other threads about this and was surprised at the lack of attention given to this. I tried looking at the liblights to see how I could modify it to get the lights on anytime the screen backlight is on. I couldn't find a way to make it happen myself; even though I am positive it can be done. We just need someone with the know how to want it done or convince someone to do it for us. I would think there would be far more people using their phones in the dark!

[Q] Top 10 apps for Galaxy tab with Gingerbread?

Hello all,
what are your top 10 apps on the Galaxy?
I have Googled this - but other than general top 10 Android apps, there was no hit.
Since the Galaxy tab is not the same as any general Android phone, the top 10 probably are not the same either. Also, new apps come all the time, so a list from a year ago would not necessarily be the same today.
So: would you be so kind to share with me (to help me discover my brand new Galaxy Tab - bought two days ago) what you consider the best / most useful / must have apps for it?
If this has been already posted somewhere - in that case please forgive my question, and pls point me to the right direction.
Thank you all!
Anyone? I have downloaded thousands of apps - and I really would not like to try all of them...
I have also tried a couple considered "best" for general android use, and they did not even work on the Galaxy tab...
Please point me in the right direction...
Nobody replied because there is no answer. Ther is no top 10 "best" apps as it all depends on the person who uses the device.
There is a "Must have" topic, you are better of looking through that for peoples "preferences" and see what you like sound of.

I don't se why they wouldn't work on your tab, the only thing that might be off is the scaling of the app fitting the tabs screen. If that's the case in which you speak of "not working", just download "spare parts" from the market , open it and scroll down to compatibility mode. If its checked, then uncheck it ( or viceversa check if unchecked) and reboot then once rebooted do the same and reboot and they should all fit your screen. Let us know if that helps.

Change the button mappings so that one of the buttons do not exist, and see if that gives you an on screen button. To the best of my knowledge ICS detects hardware buttons, so if it thinks there is no physical home/back/search button it will create an on screen version.

And if you dont have the skills then learn, its always good to know how to do something so you dont have to rely on other people, you sir (the op) are what gives xda a bad name

I tried this for a while. Not really worth it. You'll still be able to see the capacitive buttons and it's really just quite ugly to have two sets of buttons.
Why you need on screen buttons ??
we already have soft buttons that perform the same function.

There is such a thing called a library, or a friends laptop, hell walk into walmart and do it.
Also if you ask if something is possible it implies that you don't know. If you new it was possible you should ask for a port of this feature with links. I stand by the statements I said earlier
I think he posted this thread as a joke. I sure thought it was funny good one
why are we all such negative people, like seriously come on now. OP, they have a point, search nextime. But everyone else, you dont have to be so instantly judgemental and negative toward him. there is a polite way to tell someone something, and swearing only makes you sound ignorant like you dont know how to form intelligent sounding words. this site is for our hobby, everyone cheer up, geez.
You guys need to relax , it was a request . I know how to search I wanted to see if someone had the same interest or had it for personal use . Seems like the threads title was "My GPS doesn't work" CHILL

I agree that rudeness is not needed but:
#1 You posted a request in the development section. Questions or requests should not be posted here.
#2 You should have posted in your OP:
a. What you are requesting
b. The conditions you are in / working with (status)
c. What you have looked up already
d. What you have attempted already
The last 2 are key - its shows you are not lazy and you are genuinely trying to fix / solve the problem yourself.
Good luck

Popular Ideas for Development

EDITED per Admin's suggestions:
Hey xda,
I wanted to make a thread for people who are not as developer-savvy as others to share ideas and make requests for mods/roms/etc.
If a request or idea could generate enough feedback or support, developers would be more informed on what people would want or like to see.
Here are two things that I would personally like to see on my Nexus 4.
On your homescreen, when you press and hold the home button to go to Google Now, is it possible to add shortcuts and or folders to the extra space around the ring? This would allow the user to clean up some screen space by hiding frequent shortcuts.
Also, I would like to see app-specific security (pattern, pin, password) protection. This would allow a user to easily unlock their phone but still have the security they would want for their messaging, facebook, etc.
Thanks for reading.
I'll maintain this thread as best I can and put the best suggestions below.
Best Ideas as of January 02, 2013
Ideas will be added to this list as support is generated.
Ideas will be removed from this list as they are developed or "worked-around."
See the post number for more details.
App-specific security (pattern, pin, password) protection. OP, #1
Simultaneously video recording with both cameras. DonDizzurp, #21
Full calculator as a lock screen widget. AlwaysDroid, #23
5 PNGs as your WiFi/Signal bars. kcls, #32

rom control should be built into most every rom. the features they stick in rom control are different though. i would imagine they all have the navbar deal. its best to flash a rom. find its features and then wipe and add a new rom. and keep going until you find the one you like best. after you find the right one... spend the hours it takes to set up your phone the way you want. for instance.. all of this talkin has caused me to want to throw cyanogen on here to see what those guys have been up to.

There's a big difference between posting direct requests in the development forums and posting a thread in the general forum for collecting ideas you think might be cool to have developed one day. There's nothing wrong with this thread and it's not bothering anybody. It's certainly more useful than the hundreds of threads that occur at every device launch complaining about one hardware defect or another. As an amateur developer I think threads like this are cool places to look for ideas that might be fun to tackle.

second
except for the am dev part. i dunno devving.
So i was browsing the thread and i came across this, and from the title alone i was ready to shut it down......
But i as i read in to it i had to change my mind. The OP is not blatantly making a request to any specific dev. They are simply stating things they would like to see. Now i know this isnt a place to make you phone look cool and i am obviously aware of the rules. But bedoig brings up a very valid point. Some of the amateur dev's might see this as an opportunity to dig in a little deeper. This is not in the development boards and no one is making a specific request from any of the dev's, so i see no reason to shut this down at this time.
However, since i do not normally moderate this board, then i welcome this boards mods _Arjen_, iridaki, eagleeyetom, YZ, TeeJay3800, Diamondback, AvRS, krook6023 to sidestep my decision if they feel the need to.
@oneonezerosix you may want to consider changing the title of your thread to something that sounds a little less demanding. The Dev's here might take it the wrong way (just a suggestion)

suggestions? sure, to an extent
XDA is here FOR the developers not for the average consumer to pressure devs.
as most xda OG's would say: if you want it done, do it yourself...
if you cant.. then try to learn and get the ball rolling and a dev will probably help you along the way.

After reading the post, I can understand your perspective. All that I ask is that you attempt to understand mine as well.
Zelendel stated that, "XDA is a place to come to learn and share your knowledge."
As an amateur developer, I do not know how to develop much of the things that I wish to be able to use. It was my sole intention to facilitate a discussion of new ideas for development from varying levels of skilled members. Even the best developers can dream of new mods/roms/kernels/etc that they may be unable to produce by their own means. Which is reason enough for one to want to request the assistance of others by posting in a thread like this.
If you do not see any value in this thread, then I apologize for wasting your time.
I am not a Dev and get offended for them when someone says "please add this".
But this is a recollection of ideas, honestly, what's wrong in that? Where would the devs be with no ideas?

I agree. This is an "ideas" thread, not targeted at a specific developer. A dev may take this on board and incorporate it, as they might think its a good idea

totally stock no root etc.
Trying to find a couple things that frustrate me.
1. how to keep screen on when charging? it is not in the developer options (where most phones have it) so where is it?
2. how to arrange apps - I cannot see where you can arrange apps alphabetically. the random order is killing me trying to find stuff.
I have no idea how to do the first one (but would like to know as well). To arrange your apps alphabetically just go to the top of your app drawer and drag down. Then just click Custom and a drop down list will come down with Alphabetically being one of your choices.

With respect, when I read through the q/a forum, it appeared to be solely for questions about rooted devices, how to root, which ROM does what, etc. There were no general Q's about stock devices, hence I put my Q in the general section since it appeared it would apply to a more general audience.
My apologies.

1. You can use an app like Screebl. It works very well.
2. When you scroll all the way to the top of the app drawer and then scroll up some more for it to refresh it will give you a drop down menu that you can use to choose the sort order. Alphabetical is one of the options.
