[Q] Why unlocking bootloader? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from the samsungs which was pretty straightforward in rooting and custom roms.
I see there are custom roms for locked bootloaders, which won't lose Bravia engine. So what are the benefits in unlocking it?

Use of more roms which only work on UB, can't loose Cwm, you can run cm android 4.2.2 and asop, ect which you can't on LB

That's cause samsung has an unlocked bootloader straight out of the box.
Locked bootloader = no custom kernels at all

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader VS Locked Bootloader.

Hey guys,
as we all know, there has been a work around to gain root access and flash custom recovery to locked bootloader devices.
The only thing i heard was, that by doing that, NFC would not work anymore (but can be fixed) and your bootloader will have the status changed to locked forever (also believe there is a fix for this)
So i just want you guys' insights on what are the advantages of bootloader unlocking apart from the above,
Cheers guys~
I'd also love to know what's not possible with a locked bootloader.
My biggest question is whether I could still use droidwall since that's what keeps me from getting huge accidental data bills.
- The NFC works, I just tried it with a credit card as well as with one of the smart tags that Sony gave with the box.
- The Bravia Engine is disabled, however there will eventually be a workaround for this one as you can already get Bravia Engine version 1 running whenever you wish even with the unlocked bootloader, not the version 2 just yet. However, my take on this is quite positive as I appreciate realistic colours more to over saturated bright and overly contrasting colours, hence why I don't like AMOLEDs for instance.
- Other than that I have not noticed anything different in my device. Mind you it's much better since the unlock, as I have already flashed a custom ROM, I'm using Revolution but there are some really good other ones too, with all the bloatware gone, you can clear the bloatware you do not want without a custom ROM. I also have a custom kernel now, using Doom's kernel with no overclocks.
- Oh and I also have a mod for configurable switches in my notifications area so no reason to go in and out of Settings application or use Sony's laggy widgets.
- The ability to use AdFree and other root requiring applications is a great plus for me as well.
I think its very confusing. My bootloader is unlockable, and i would like a custom rom, but not sure what to do, and what i will break and not break. Its a bit of a jungle.

BE is DRM so umlocking means losing them forever, unless someone find how to relock BL again and restore BE
With unlocked BL you can flash any Rom and kernel.
With locked you can flash only stock based Rom and can't flash CM roms

Does that still mean we can only flash stock based ROMs?

Twrp is just a recovery, like CWM recovery
So still you can only flash stock based Rom
To flash CM Rom or any Rom that is based on CM or even AOKP roms, you need unlocked BL.
These Roms use a different kernel than stock kernel.
Unlocked BL is needed to flash these custom kernels in kernel partition
Go to XS dev section, you will see alot of Roms that need unlocked BL

Sorry for confusing you like this.
I will say it in more clear way
With locked BL, the only thing you can do is to flash stock based roms.
With unlocked BL,
-can flash stock based roms,
-Custom based Roms,
-Stock based kernel
-Custom based kernel
So you can't flash doomlord's kernel with locked BL

My favourite part with an unlocked bootloader is that with proper knowledge you can handle memory handling, CPU scheduling, under or over voltages on your CPU/GPU, etc.
So really the unseen side of things, my Xperia Z goes 2.5 days with one full charge with the modded kernel I have, using AOSP with nothing unused installed.
I wouldn't have been able to achieve that with a locked bootloader.
And I did not really like how overly saturated blues became with Bravia Engine anyway, so nothing lost on that side really.
I unlocked after the first 24hours of stock use.

First off all, why have you posted a link to the S section when secondly, there is two types of recoveries you can find and should use in this section.

You can flash stock based ROMS if you got root access and if the ROM does support stock kernel.
AOSP / CM / AOKP / PA / PAC ROMS requires unlocked bootloader though, thanks to using their own specific, unsigned kernel.

[Q] Xperia SP Locked Bootloader KitKat ROM

I have changed my ROM a couple of times now after rooting my SP.
I am unable to unlock the bootloader, and dont seem to find many ROM's for locked BL's
Is anyone doing a KITKAT ROM for locked bootloaders at all?
Great work by all the DEVs.

No, locked bootloader just support stock firmware, or stock based ROM's. Since the last stock firmware for our device is 4.1.2, the only way you to put a newer version is by unlocking your bootloader.
But don't be afraid, Sony will realease android 4.3 for XSP this month.

Hi - can you tell me which roms you have been able to install with locked bootloader .... thanks
Andrew
With a locked bootloader you can only use Stock based roms – so no Kit Kat custom roms on a LB until Sony release 4.4 themselves.
These Roms will typically have the latest Sony media apps (camera, Walkman, video etc.) and use the Honami (Xperia Z) theme. They are often de-bloated and tweaked so their free RAM and out of memory settings improve on normal performance. Other features may include an expanded power menu and long press volume key to change track when listening to music.
Existenz is the most fully featured custom rom you can install without unlocking your bootloader.
An alternative is to install a debloated ROM and use the Xposed framework to get some of the goodies from Kit Kat and other AOSP based roms. This is what I did before CM was developed for the SP.
yes u can..

[Q] Is it worth unlocking bootloader?

I have C6903 .757 rooted using [NUT] way, is it worth to unlock my bootloader now, what I can get and what I will lost? beside thatis there any custom rom that better than stock rom for now?
IMHO not worth it. Keep your X-Reality and BIONZ and other Sony exclusive software. I hate buggy camera and sleep-of-death issues, so I keep my Z1 on 4.3
But keep an eye on this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714333

Sony stock ROM is the best
Except you don't want Sony UI,then you can unlock bootloader & flash CM11
You will lost DRM keys if you didn't backup,X-Reality won't work for Pictures & Movies
No feature will disappear from unlocking the bootloader. Stated by Sony themselves. Before 4.3 stuff did happen though.

Pre 4.3 this was the fact. Camera ceased to work and other functions aswell. The DRM keys did matter there. The tech guy from Sony also confirmed this.
Kitkat version though this is all fixed. And like he said to quote him "Nothing will change software wise with just unlocking a bootloader under Kitkat, aslong as you dont flash custom roms ofc."
So to translate this: The DRM keys aint used in KitKat. And it is very easy to confirm this yourself. Google the functions that people say will stop to work with no DRM keys. None of thoose has stopped to work with unlocked bootloader for me on KitKat 4.4.2.
And for the camera, the camera working worse under KitKat as you also can google and find information about. Unlocked as Locked doesent matter, and this is possibly one of the reasons why ppl still think, Bionz, X-Reality and other functions stop to work with unlocked bootloader.
But is it worth it? Well that is up for anyone to decide for themselves. Since KitKat, the phone aint working so well anyway imo. So if it would die on me i wouldnt care. I will probably not buy Sony in future though, they used to be good but something has happened.
For real?

Now I'm curious:
How, where or why are custom ROMS faster than stock ROMS?
I really can't complain about the speed of my stock. I haven't unlocked my bl yet (no need for) but I doubt you'd see much difference in speed between stock und cfw.
It was different on my sxs. Latest aosp or fxp was definitely more fluid but the z1 is a powerhouse.

Nobody said they are more faster, they are tweeked but at the moment on Z1 they are in development so before see a wonderfull stable Custom Roms you have to wait.
BTW, many Custom Roms are based on Stock Kernel so you will never see any difference. The heart of the tweekness and fastness on Android it's the Kernel, it's the main reason.

You can install CyanogenMod if your bootloader is unlocked. If you do that you will lose all your data and warranty but I think its worth it. You will have more control over your phone (privacy settings etc) and much more.
If you want to do that you should do a nandroid backup before and most important a TA backup. TA backup is for relock the bootloader if necessary (so you have warranty again). You can find TA backup tool in this forum, just search for it.

Unlocking the BL is for rom development mainly. You will be able to load CM11, but so what. The stock rom is excellent for most people and its nowdays to tweak the interface in so many ways its silly.

With an unlocked bootloader you are able to install custom Kernels. CyanogenMod based ROMS require a diffrent kernel and this requires an unlocked bootloader.
You need to follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354721
