Development stopped a long time ago, but fastest and most stable vanilla ROM should be CyanogenMod 6 for the droid 1.
That's Froyo, which a lot of folks around here frown on.
But if you want something simple, boy howdy, that's the one.
I tried like heck to find a way to get gingerbread running smoothly and never was completely satisfied. Too little RAM for GB and all the apps I had... even with overclocking and SD card storage solutions.
I can't say from personal experience that froyo is the perfect fit for the droid. I was too proud to drop back a version. I ran CM6 on an ancient G1 and that worked out ok.
CM7 is still getting updates every week or so, though, so give it a try and see if it works for you.
I was OC'd to 1.1GHz with a kernel from Prime. Other people swear by Steeldroid for the droid 1. That dev is still working on it, too.
Most of the custom ROMs are based on CyanogenMod anyway.
Good luck!

OK, running steel droid 10.5 with 10.6 coming out soon on my og Droid 1. So far seems very smooth with less quirkiness than the final liquidsmooth rom I was running. Steel Droid looks like one of the last still trying to tweak the last ounce of life from the Droid 1.

Yay! Keep the Droid alive!

I installed Steel Droid on my Droid a long time ago and it ran smooth. Gonna try it again soon and see what has changed since.
Advice
The fastest and most stable vanilla ROM should be CyanogenMod 6 for the Droid 1 but Steel Droid is very good aswell
Just thought I'd share with you the current status of things. I decided to flash Hashcode's new RAZR HD stock rom on my Atrix HD (Jellybean leak) with Safestrap 3.0.
Good things came out of it! It actually booted, to everyone's surprise.
I got H+ data on boot, and a couple force closes of some Motobloat because I did not wipe data coming from my Batakang Rom (Bad idea, but do-able for me). I am sending this from my USB tethered "RAZR HD" now.

Sorry for the blurry pic:
As you can see I am running the latest official RAZR HD software. A bug noticed so far from SirHoover2010 is that Wifi is not working for him (same for me). Most likely used to different wifi libs used and can be pretty easily fixed by swapping them out I imagine.
His phone has the battery mod as well, and Settings > About Phone calls his a RAZR HD MAXX.
Another difference from RAZR HD is our phone lacks NFC. The option is still shown in Settings, but that can be fixed as well.
Any questions?
You can download the RAZR HD stock rom by Hashcode from here:

This should answer.. just install zip as normally flashing a rom.
So,we have almost the same firmware on both phones. No porting needed. If there's CM-based rom available for Razr HD,we might be able to use it on Atrix HD as well I guess.

You really are a legend:good: I want to cry:crying:
so... in theory, we can flash CM10 for XT925 (or only XT926???) in our Atrix HD?? I compared the specs of both phones in PhoneArena (MB886 vs XT925) and are almost the same phones, only varies in ROM memory, battery, screen size, and the lack of NFC in the Atrix HD, the RAZR HD supports Wifi N - 5 Ghz, and i dont remember what more... this is great!
There will be any support for Bell version on ROMS, recovery, etc.? We don't even have a Custom Recovery like SS yet.
Razr i, M and HD are newer phones and does have Official JB. Atrix is older and we've seen only one leak.

Does it have HDMI detection and HDMI overscan options in settings>display ?
Those are missing from JB leak leaving it unusable for me as a lapdock addict, the picture is cramped and only takes 60% of the display, with no options to correct it.
Even so, it doesnt work now on a proper HDMI TV what the plug is there for in the first place.
They were both there on ICS rom.
Does the RAZR HD ROM include Webtop? If so, does it work?

Well crap. The RAZR and RAZR MAXX do, don't they? Now that we have root, has anyone tried to get that working on the AHD? I tried Webtop on the Atrix 4G and it had potential that was never fully realized. I know that Webtop 3.0 was very different, but it would be nice to have as an option on the AHD.
Or is that something we'd need an unlocked bootloader to do?

I didn't like that the Atrix 4G had no HDMI mirroring, but the entertainment app and the remote with the HD Dock were useful.

You must have forgot, It did have a mirroring option, just not an HD one. But rather a one with its stock resolution 500x900 which sucked.

There was no mirroring natively on the 4G. Some of the people here at XDA figured out a partial workaround if you were rooted. The stock OS launched an "Entertainment Center" (which supported 1080p) which allowed you to show pictures or movies stored locally on the device, so it was somewhat limited since you couldn't launch Netflix, play content across the network, play formats that the entertainment center didn't support, etc. XDA also figured out how to launch webtob without a dock, which helped some, but you were limited to the resolution of the webtop interface.
The Motorola developer documentation mentioned HDMI mirroring as one of the modes, but it was disabled in the 4G (although I think the Atrix 2 supported it). It was one of the top requests on the Motorola support forums for the 4G, but the request fell on deaf ears at Motorola.

Hello, I have been using the Golden Rom on my Atrix HD and once I learned about the unlocked boot loader I tried to switch over to other roms. The problem is, they seem to lag really hard for me and I don't understand the problem.
I have tried flashing this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244963) -pacman rom
and this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250601) aokp.
Both of them lag really hard when I use them and it is a huge inconvenience.
If anyone could tell me how I could fix this I would be very grateful.
There's a performance booster zip that helps. And set your governor right. I don't really have any lag on pacman.

Anyways, the dev seems to be building a new version. For whatever reason, the link is down.

Hi I have rebooting issue with my Atrix hd. I just bought it as used one and upgraded it into the stock att jellybean rom. I don't have much app on it.
I removed juice defender but I have avg antivirus on it. The problem is, it reboots randomly once or twice a day. Other that this its very smooth and looks faster than my Nexus 7. Does anybody have recommendations on this?

I've used Stock, Chameleon OS, CM10.2, and CM11. Of those, I like CM11 the best in terms of speed and feel.

I would usually assume stock cm or something with less than stock cm would be faster since I would assume that any extra features are going to be consuming more ram. Then again that's more from my standpoint of using a old PC.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD running CM10.1 Tablet UI using xda-developers app
I've upgraded from hashcode's JB to kitkang, not the regular cm, and I feel the system is slower, specially when listening to spotify while downloading torrents, that's why i'm asking.
I've tred three ROMs for the KFHD 7
The three roms I've tried are, in order,
1. [ROM-AOSP] Unofficial CM11.0 KFire HD 7" (KK 4.4_r1.2) [11/25 BETA] - Hashcode
2. [ROM][WIP][PORT][SOME BUGS][Halo]Full ParanoidAndroid Port for KF HD 7 - jb2kred
3. [ROM][PORT][IOAP][4.4.2] Kindle Fire HD 7"[Update 02/06/2014] - BookCase
The most stable, I feel, was Hashcode's. I had almost zero interface issues, but certain games would crash. FYI - Don't buy the games Kami, and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour. Both crash on opening. Broken Sword 2 crashes at first, but if you keep trying and eventually get a saved game it works. My biggest issue with Hashcode's was that it eventually slowed down to the point of being unusable, particularly the app switcher and home functions. It all started when I began having to press the power button twice to get the device to wake up, which I've come to find out was an issue with the rom. Unfortunately, I can't be certain that it's the new release (cm-11-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-tate.zip) because I switched roms after that happened. If you haven't noticed, Hashcode has released new versions but hasn't updated his original post. If you follow the link to the old version (Goo.im) you'll find the new ones.
I tried the ParanoidAndroid version next. On first install it was incredibly slow and I barely got through the GApps configuration without throwing the tablet. It was still really slow after I finally got to the home screen so I went back into recovery, factory wiped, and reflashed. The same issue, but faster, and slightly usable. Not nearly as snappy as Hashcode's though.
Next up was IOAP. I currently have this rom on my device. It's very quick, but some of the issues that popped up on Hashcode's rom appear on this one - slow app switching, sometimes getting to the home screen is slow. I think he's using Hashcode's "kernel" (I have no idea what that is), so perhaps it's an issue there. The games mentioned before have the same behavior on this rom. One of the more appealing (I think) features of this rom is that it looks quite svelte - clean lines, black and white, bold, custom icons in places. The bootup animation is ugly, but you don't see that very often, obviously. The other features of the rom I don't really use, mostly because I want the tablet to be quick all the time and it seems like the notification system (Halo) interferes with the functioning of the tablet. There are other bugs on the rom that are mentioned in BookCase's post, but I barely noticed them. I really can't decide if this rom is as fast as Hashcode's AOSP build. I'd have to try them side by side. If reflashing HC's rom makes the app switcher and home functions fast again, then I think I'd give the title to that rom, not this one.
If you really want a rom with an extensive notification system - you like to see emails, notifications, even while playing games and you like a robust lock screen notification system, I'd go with BookCase's IOAP build. If you want a rom that's base Cyanogenmod and functions probably the best, I'd go with Hashcode's rom.
My personal favorite is Bookcase's IOAP, its faster than most when Persano's tweaks are added. I think it's the fastest as well

They're a bunch of init.d scripts created by @persano to speed up our Kindle's. He's got tweak packs for all kinds of different ROMs and OS versions of the Amazon stock software. They work quite well.
