[Q] Stuttering audio? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I searched and didn't see anything on this -- even Google did not turn up any results. I saw on the HTC One X sometimes there would be audio stutter/skips with the Beats EQ on. Sometimes when I'm playing music the audio will just glitch and stutter for no apparent reason. It is random. Has anyone else experienced this? It happened with the stock ROM as well as with ARHD7.

I am having this problem with the HTC One, streaming via bluetooth. I have raised the problem with HTC tech and waiting for a response.

I'm finding it hard to believe no one else has this problem. If it's a hardware issue I fully expect HTC to replace my unit. I will even take a recording of the stutter if necessary.

My audio will make weird noise in certain tracks and bass tones out of no where with beats on or off

Yeah I get stuttering on Pandora, a reboot fixes it for me... shrug.

I had this with my HTC One and it has been reported that it is a wifi issue. Turn it of (wifi) and it should work OK, mine does. It is a pain to keep switching wifi of and on so I found an app called A2DP volume in the play store that does it automatically.
M.

Bumping to see if anyone else has this...

I am having this issue only when stream over BT.

Faulty sdcard possibly or your files are corrupt. Have you done an MP3 check on them?

I'm also experiencing this. Except mine skips/stutters even with beats off.
Running ARHD8.0 stock kernel w/purexaudio. I'm not sure which version of purexaudio the ARHD installed, but I went ahead and installed the most current version (v4.0) to see if it helps. So far no skipping, but I haven't tested that long yet..

There is a known issue that if you are using Adblock or a similar piece of software which modifies the hosts file that Pandora will stutter. Are you using an actual file, or are you using a buffered service that could be having an issue because of this?

It happens in the regular music player too; however I reinstalled ARHD8.1 and am not selecting adaway hosts files. I'll report back on the issue.. Thanks for the tip!

I am not using AdAway, and it happens in Play Music over the headphone jack. Haven't tested it with Bluetooth. I plan on installing TrickDroid sometime soon; I will definitely update this thread when I do and see if it still happens. Curiously, it's been happening less lately. Only once or twice a day.

So I reflashed ARHD8.1 without adblock and Pandora is no longer horribly stuttering. However it still has occasional stutters in both Pandora and Google Music. Still not sure what's causing it.

I reflashed without PureXAudio and the occasional skips/stutters still happens. Maybe once every couple minutes, really annoying considering this happened on my Note 2 also, which is why I bought the HTC One. I initially thought it might be a rogue app, but I don't have anything that could be causing it besides maybe groove IP disconnecting/reconnecting, or tasker. However I disabled both apps and the stutters still happen..

In terms of Bluetooth, the largest thing that could change in the near future would be if we get an official 4.2+ or the rumored 4.3 release, as the BT stack is recoded in that code base. This has the potential to change the game, but really considering your issue still seems to be isolated to your devices and not everyone's though, I've gotta think we're overlooking something. The further clue that you are saying this happened on your Note 2 as well also makes me wonder what else is happening.
Is this stuttering possibly during PBAP, MAP or some other profile saturating the connection with its own traffic? Is this on all BT devices that you've tested against or are we dealing with a dodgy car kit/speaker instead of a phone difficulty?

I dont use blue tooth, this is strictly wired 3.5mm connections. I don't have any uncommon apps besides tasker/secure settings/busybox/grooveip/xposed installer that were on both my note 2 and htc one. The only apps that have SU access are secure settings, xposed installer, seeder, solid explorer, betterbattery stats, and tasker.
I was almost sure that the stutter/skips were caused by purexaudio, but I guess not since I removed it.

I had this as well, does it sound like the stuff in this thread?:

I personally had it fixed when I flashed CM 10.1 nightlies, so I'm guessing it's a software issue, more specifically maybe even androidHD

It sounds similar, sometimes the audio would cut out entirely for a third of a second, but it was not happening nearly as frequent as yours. Mine only happened once every couple minutes. Also I have since flashed bulletproof 1.9 kernel with purexaudio 4.0 and the problem seems to have gone away. However, more testing needs to be done..

I'm thinking it has something to do with CPU usage, like it running a process in the background that disrupts the audio output. But I don't know if anything can be done about that.

[Q] Audio only works after reboot

The audio both from the speaker and headphones only seems to work after a reboot. I have no idea when it stops functioning.
This was a problem from day 1 with the free elephant kid book using the Read To Me function. I just had it happen with the music player, both the native one and MortPlayer. I had originally assumed it was a glitch with the book.
If a reboot fixes the problem, it's a software issue, right? Why did a search here not produce any similar threads? If I'm alone here, then it's a hardware issue and I'll need to unroot and return it, right?

It's defective. Get a new one.
Thanks for the reply.
Now to unroot...
Mine had the same exact problem. Audio usually stopped working after the screen went to sleep for the first time after a reboot. I recently flashed the 900mhz "screamer" overclock kernel and I've yet to have an audio problem since then. As much sense as that does or doesn't make, it seemed to fix the problem for me. Its worth a try. Hope it works for you (if you haven't already unrooted and returned by now)

When you get your hands on the new one, before you leave the store do this. After power on & such, try the audio (V0l + -). Works? Put to sleep for >10sec. Wake & test audio. No-work? Reboot, (Long power press) Try sleep/wake sequence again. If it works you are golden, now check a few other things & go home & root it! If it fails the test, don't let the Nook Genius tell you that you should let it charge for at least 4 hrs. before testing. The three that I have received had between 50% & 90% charge OOB. That's plenty for it to work properly, assuming the battery level meter is accurate. Put together your own checklist based on info on this forum. Crossword to test edges of screen, kbd. when charging from wall adapter etc.
Good luck, when you get a good one they are solid!

Interesting! That would support the thinking that this issue is related to timing & initializing the audio codec or something related. Hardware specs may be skewed just enough for it to not work when waking up. That's actually encouraging! Means that all those with this problem may see a F/W fix if they don't want to re-clock it.
Cheers,

Well, I unrooted and restored it to factory new using the 9 reboot method. This brought the device back to 1.0.0. I then went back to the store. The manager came out, took the device, and said "it needed 1.0.1 to fix the problem. Let me load it for you." I was thinking, "whatever dude. It had 1.0.1 on it and it still had the issue." But the guy was super nice and ran off with the device to some back office. He came back while it was installing 1.0.1 and it's working fine now. I kept trying to get it to recreate the problem with no luck. (So it actually is good luck.)
I'm assuming the 1.0.1 software update didn't install properly the first time.
I could have done all that myself without going to the store.

[Q] Songs jumping in walkman player

Has anyone else had issues with tracks jumping or freezing briefly in the walkman player? I've only had it happen a few times, but it never normally happens with the files themselves. Any ideas?
Ill reply this happened previously on one of the last java Sony Ericsson phones think it was the c905 - cant remember. But I fixed it somehow.
Anyways,
Are the songs on phone or memory card?
What bit rate are the songs? What format?

Sound issues
Hello!
I have the same problem with freezing music not only in walkman app, but also in player pro. It happens more often when device is using multitask (for example, browsing and music at the same time), but sometimes there are pauses even if screen is off.
All the media is [email protected] stored on microsd.
And i have never noticed this problem in media apps that use their own media decoder. Sound in videos played by mxplayer is ok, and music has no longer these freezes as i started to use playerpro with DSP pack.
As far as i can see, the problem is caused by software, not hardware. I hope sony will fix it by firmware updates.

They're stored on internal memory as I need to get round to buying a 64gb microsd. Songs are 128kpbs and mp3.
It freezd when listening FLAC music.

any other ideas? this is seriously bugging me - listening to music is probably one of the main things I use my phone for outside of calls/texts
Um have you cleared the cache for the walkman app?
Or like windows pcs.
Clear the phone - factory reset it - start from scratch do a clean wipe.
Try another music player.
Or try a different bit rate mp3

Have done all but cleared the cache and bit rate so will try that today. Also getting my sd card today so will see if it makes any difference once they're on that instead, as is it possible it could be to do with the read speed of the internal memory?
As i have already said, it looks to be walkman app problem.
I have noticed no such issues since i started to use another player app.

See, I'm having the problem regardless of what music app I use, which is a bit weird. Although last night, I wiped all my music again and transferred just a few of the songs, so will continue to see how that goes.
Ok so have tried everything now - different bit rate, clearing the cache, factory reset, phone repair, using different music players, trying it on both internal memory and SD card and it's STILL skipping.
Could this therefore just be a hardware fault?
That's really weird.
You know, i had same problem, some people were reporting about this problem both here and on local russian forums, but the feedback about the issue was not that massive as it would be in case of hardware fault. And at the moment everything works fine on my device.
If you dont mind, i'll contact you in a moment via private message, hope i can provide some help.

I mean if it was a hardware fault just specific to my phone. It's annoying if it is as I haven't experienced all the other issues people have had like dead pixels, LED light problems, stamina mode not working, etc. so would be reluctant to swap my phone and potentially end up with any of those issues.
Had this problem' solved by using player pro and having audio buffer set to very high and priority set to high sorted it for me.

Using player pro with DSP enabled, so will try editing the audio buffer and priority settings as well.
Well, everything is possible.
But i can't see the way for hardware to cause this problem with music, but not to affect any other use-cases of the device. As you said, you experienced no other troubles like random rebooting or graphic disfiguration, which would point to defects of cpu or memory or somewhat.
My guess is that system lets the device to fall into "deep sleep", that's why music decoder stops its work for a moment and causes the freeze. Just a software bug. But i can mistake, though.
Yes, i forgot to notice this: the priority of decoder in dsp settings of playerpro is also set to max.

Ok so I downloaded playerpro from the link you sent me after uninstalling the player pro and DSP pack I already had on my phone and weirdly, it seems to have improved. There's still the occasional jump/pause but nowhere near as bad as it was. Will keep testing and update. If it continues to be buggy though, I still might pop into CPW tomorrow and see whether I should get it swapped.
Update: It seems you could be onto something regarding it going to sleep - I don't know how it would go to sleep so quickly, but in look and feel, when I selected to keep the screen on, and it didn't get locked, I experienced no jumping in the tracks.
Looking at this http://androidforums.com/captivate-...-playback-stock-player-samsung-captivate.html
I wonder if it could be anything to do with CPU throttling? It is definitely the case that it only skips when the screen is off, so I'm assuming I have no way of fixing this.
Anyone able to get Lastfm scrobbling to work with Walkman?
Tried the Xperia App but it only works with the official Lastfm app and it's a piece of crap.

I have sent a request to sony's support via e-mail asking for their response about this music problem. I hope the answer will come today, so i'll post sony representatives' comment on the issue.
Still believe it is software to cause bugs. Playerpro decoder, set to maximum process priority, doesn't let system to sleep, which increases power consumption, but fixes freezes and pauses. The original sound decoder has lesser priority, maybe there are some bugs in power management, so the issue we decribe happens.
The problem is, there can be no firmware updates for XZ until the end of March or beginning of April, when android 4.2 will become available for our device.

Left speaker issue

I'm running TD 9.1, and prior was on 8.0. Tried both stock kernel, and a few other ones with no luck. At first when the sounds starts playing, the left speaker works fine, then with in a sec, it will fad to almost nothing. Is this something someone else has encountered? For all I know it has been like this since day one.. But I don't believe so.
Edit: I have also tried clean installs. i have not tried other roms yet.
Double edit: My xda search is not working, but google did for me. Found one other person having somewhat the same issue, but it was never answered. I hate to bump an old tread like that, after i have posted mine already.

I have the exact same issue. Tried million ROMs, sound patches and tricks but nothing change. The easiest way to see the difference between the two speakers is to run the Audio Test using HTC Function Test by dialing *#*#3424#*#*
Finally, I managed to get S-Off and now I'm going to get back to 100% stock flashing RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_BrightstarUS_WWE_1.29.1540.3.exe, I'll do the test again and update the post.
EDIT: I'm full stock and it didn't fix it I guess I have to send it back...
BTW, what did you do? Did you fixed yours?
Running Sinless 5.1.5 now with elemental, everything works 100%. I guess for some reason my phone just didn't like TD, we all know they have a personality of there own..
Sorry for the long wait before response, I don't pay attention very well.

[Q] Audio stutter on 4.3?

Is anyone else suffering from audio stutter since the update to 4.3 and if so has anyone found a solution? I've read about lots of issues with other devices and music stutter on 4.3 but can't find anything on the Xperia Z.
I'm running the Generic UK rooted update from the Android Dev section, and I have narrowed the stutter down to when the device is sleeping.
At first I had my headphones (MDR-1RBT) on bluetooth and assumed it was that, but after connecting them with the wire the issue continued. Next I switched to Walkman player instead of the Google Music one (all music on both apps is local, on the SD card, not streamed).
The issue still continued, however, every time I wake the device the stuttering stops. I ran CPU spy to see what is going on and noticed my device has never entered deep sleep since the update (is anyone else seeing this also?)
One suggestion was that Wifi optimisation could be the issue, I turned that off, but it didn't help, and even turning wifi off doesn't seem to help, but wifi on seems to make it worse I'd say.
It's driving me insane and I use my phone/headphones to listen to music several hours a day and can't deal with the stutter, I'll have to go back to 4.2.2 unless I find a solution.

Same problem as well, except it does not stop when I wake the device - the stutter still continues no matter what. I'm using the default Walkman app as well as have tried other music apps, but same problem throughout
no issues with poweramp. try apollo or some other player (not walkman or play music) and see if that helps.
No stutter here with walkman app.
But if I run the Walkman app, the accu usage shows that Mediaserver sucks my Battery,

Same here and for @AngelBob
It's annoying and I've not been able to find a solution to it yet...
I went back to 4.2.2, so i have one question: can someone test if stuttering are not present using PowerAmp?
Thanks all

I believe it's kernel related. We had this exact issue in the past and Sony fixed with am update.
CM builds are also suffering audio 'stutters' so I think it's something we're going to have to live with until Sony push a new kernel/libs

You're right, after investigation, I can say with some certainty that the cause is the new bluetooth stack Google switched to in 4.3. I tried modifying some of the bluetooth configs but it made no difference. It'll need a fix to those libs and perhaps a kernel update as you say.
I don't know if it's been fixed in 4.4 yet, since I no longer own any nexus devices, but I wouldn't count on us getting the fix any time soon unless Sony decide to resolve it themselves.

You're right, I tested wired and it's the same problem.
In this case, I'm going to put the issue down to kernel and power save/sleep mode. I switched straight back to 4.2.2. I really like the new UI, but I can wait, hopefully 4.4 fixes it. I wouldn't count on a maintenance release from Sony before 4.4
I had this problem on 4.2.2 ROMs when I had Wi-Fi on. I think it was probably due to media server scanning for other devices over Wi-Fi network. It was going crazy when I was at uni as there were so many devices around me. Had to keep my wi-fi disabled just to listen to music.
You guys getting the same issue?

Unfortunately not, even worth wifi disabled it still happens, makes no difference.
It seems to be kernel related, perhaps something to do with cpu states or such because it only happens for me in sleep mode, it also happens when apps install so could be I/O related.
I'm starting to think sony rushed the Z 4.3 update, the T leak does not suffer this bug and it also has transparent nav bar by default!

Can we use bluetooth/a2dp libraries from other devices or versions of Android?
For example can we put Xperia Z 4.2.2 bluetooth files into the Xperia Z 4.3 firmware?
Thanks
On 4.3 Drummerjeds stock pre-rooted and deodexed rom with PXA23 I don't get any stutter when streaming. Is it only a problem with music stored on the device? (Doesn't appear to be an issue either with music from Google Play music stored on my external card). Just wonder if it could be related to my having the kernel tweaks on Power Guard Pro running in learning mode, if it's related to a problem in sleep mode?
Just want to inform you guys that I have no stutter whatsoever with walkman but I'm on the official C6602 4.3 ROM, but the screen sometimes flickers in chrome, the most annoying bug so far

I only use Streaming from Play Music, issue still appears,
Though I am leaning to the kernel going to sleep causing the issue,

"Music slowing down when screen is off" Thread.

Hello all,
I have researched this issue and have received various answers to this issue, so I thought I would start a thread discussing specifically this topic.
When playing music on my M8, I notice no matter what Rom I am on, I notice the music that is playing slows down when the screen is off.
As if the cpu is clocking in low (my guess is 300) and is slowing playback.
I have found questionable solutions:
1. Wipe data from the music app
2. Firmware update
3. HK adsp firmware.
My device is s-off
Running beyond stock Rom
With the latest Adsp firmware flashed.
Can anyone give me some insight to why or what can I do about this?
i've had this issue too, but i've only tried viper rom. I didn't realize it was an issue with other roms as well. is it a problem with all music players? I've only seen this happen with the google play music app.
Your streaming quality is probably set to low, which can cause this kind of issue. You can change it in the settings menu of play music.
Screenshot of what I'm talking about.
I had the music I was playing downloaded on my device. When the screen was off, my music started skipping.

I was out of town a few weeks ago and this same issue began to happen. It drove me crazy that I couldn't take a walk without having the music sound like it was robot running on fumes. I did a full wipe, re-download and reflashed the Viper ROM I'm using, firmware, played with kernel and screen frequency settings, etc... Nothing I did seemed to work. Until, all of a sudden it dawned on me that it's most likely not a hardware issue and something had to be running when the screen is off causing the music to sound like that. I turned the music channel setting to "Off" and that did the trick for me. The visualizations require a bit of power and the slower cpu/gpu clock speeds when the screen is off sem to d to play a role. Hopefully this is the solution for those of you having the same problem.

Downloaded as in cached or Downloaded as in mp3 on device? I'm guessing cached, if a low quality cached file is cached, I know of no way it'll magically become higher quality...
There may be something to the music channel, but it's unlikely that would effect playback of the file. Mc just gathers info and lyrics and has a visualizer.
I'm guessing you didn't bother to check in your play music settings to see your quality settings, and instead just ignored my suggestion, cause you know what your doing. So once ya figure it out, share with the rest of the class thanks. Meanwhile I don't have the issue and am gonna go back to stream with no lag.

Being helful is admirable, being demeaning is mean!
No need to be this way. Please take it down a notch:good:
Thanks, and happy holidays
Are you all using a Harmon Kardon?
I have the HK version and have this issue on custom Roms too. My understanding is that its due to having the HK firmware but not the proper sound libs which match it in the ROM, since the roms are based on the standard M8.
Had trouble on:
viper rom
Gpe ROM.
No issue on Bad Boyz rom based on HK.
If you have an hk model and have this issue on viper and perhaps other sense 4.4.4 roms not HK based, they have a mod to flash the libs and firmware, just skip firmware when Aroma asks, since you already have HK firmware
My trouble cleared after flashing it.

I'm not currently on viper ROM right now as I installed the gpe lollipop version. I did actually follow your instructions, but I didn't have a control since I've changed roms. And yes I meant cached instead of download. You don't have to be a **** dude, i just gave my experience of having the same issue.
I don't understand why playing a cached version of a song would play slower when the screen is off compared to when the screen is on. Im still have the issue with gpe. My guess is something with some Roms trying to conserve more power when the screen is off.

Here are the results of another test I ran. I played an mp3 file on my phone using Apollo and play music. When playing the same song in Apollo with the screen on and off, the music played perfectly fine. When the same mp3 played in play music, the audio slowed when the screen was off.
Could somebody confirm that this doesn't happen in other music players?

hmm sounds like a cpu is slowing down or something when the screen is off. do you have a custom kernel attached to your rom?
I had the same diagnosis of slow music but due to certain xposed modules that was controlling alarms and wakelocks, try disabling xposed framework to identify if its interfering with any custom ROM framework modification

I am not using a custom ROM just a stock version of Lollipop and am having this same issue on my LG G3. In my case, it's downloaded files on my device as well as cached playback.
The screen being off definitely seems to be a trigger.
I've just started experiencing this with Google Play Music on 6.0 GPE. Did anybody ever find a fix?

I had this exact thing happen on older ROMs as well as the 6.0 GPE. In the past, I flashed a custom kernel and turned on "high quality audio" using Trickster Mod. Although, I've been running 6.0 GPE un-rooted for a while so that's not an option.
Not sure if it is a permanent fix yet, but I turned on the equalizer under the settings menu and I haven't had the slow audio problem for a few songs now.
