[Q] Slow notifications Compared to nexus - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My htc one seems very slow to react to push notifications.
gmail - takes bit longer
others etc
snapchats dont even push through
This is compared to my nexus 4 that i am used too.
Is there an option to make it faster, or do i just have to live with it

Have you tried disabling power saving ( i think it also closes your data connection after 15 minutes of inactivity)?

did some tests this morning. Seems you are right. Under power save settings it puts the data connection to sleep when screen is off.

just uncheck the data option in powersaving so it still reduces the cpu speed and screen but you still get the data connections you need

Auto send/receive while in sleep mode?

Is it just me or can this phone not do it?
On my iphone if I leave wifi on and turn the screen off, it will connect only when needed using the auto send/receive schedule.
My xperia no matter what i do just wont seem to send receive with auto send/receive set to 5 minutes, wifi enabled, and i turn screen off with power button (or even leave it automatic).
Does it work for anyone else or is this just the way the xperia works? It only sends/receives when it's awake, in which case, pretty stupid, cause i can just do it manually if i'm using it.
I think winmo only sends/receives over a cellular connection while the phone is asleep. Wifi on the other hand is disabled when the phone goes asleep in order to preserve battery life....so no sending or recieving emails over wifi with the device in sleep mode

That's really disappointing, it's a feature I had come to expect, thinking the device could atleast witch it on long enough to sync my email just like the iphone does before switching it off again.
guess my only option is to buy a data plan.
Try Advance config
Bottom right softkey "Menu" --> More Settings --> Connections --> Enable Wi-fi on standby mode

Thanks, I have just tried this, but I see that basically what it does is prevent the wifi from sleeping on standby mode, which is going to kill the wifi I presume in a couple of hours.
I guess it's just not possible for it to do what exactly I wanted it to do which is to connect and disconnect when required, to send and receive, while left switched on and the phone is in standby.
I believe that even when the phone is on and wifi is on I think the normal wifi power save (middle slider position) switches itself off after an idle period to save power when not in use, "on" just means available for use, not necessarily powered up.
I need this too, could someone try a mort-script or something to connect to WiFi automatically and then send/receive emails every desired set hours? Think it is possible..
Well
I tried enabling this (and yes, the wifi stays on while asleep) and putting my power save slider all the way to the right, however, after waiting the set time for my auto send/receive (5 minutes) and infact more, it did not send/receive until the moment I woke it, so I don't know if it was just about to do it, or if waking it caused the update.
i will give it another go and see how it goes, if you say that the wifi does infact just sleep itself when idle it shouldn't harm the battery life too much.
Strange
Ok, after further experimentation, I got it to send/receive my email while sleeping with the mode set for standby wifi enabled, however, with the refresh time setto 5 minutes, it took almost 15 minutes to update.
15 minutes is about the time I want, but will it take more power if I leave it on 5 minutes, or will it take even longer still if i set it to 15 minutes?
I'll try leaving my wifi on for a couple of days and see how it goes.
Try the program rk-OSR. It can connect/disconnect wi-fi automatically only for synchronizing e-mail.
Thanks

Thanks, I'm going to see how it fairs over the next couple of days with the wifi set to work during standby (in terms of battery life) and if that doesn't work out i'll take a look at the app.
I don't know what it is but i just have a phobia of running extra 3rd party software on a phone that can only just about handle itself.
You pretty much have to run 3rd party apps on WinMo. In my opinion it's like using a normal computer with windows without installing any other applications. It's barely usable for anything at all without getting really annoyed.

Yeh, but what annoys me is that my desktop computer is designed with the hardware to run its OS and a hell of a lot more, the hardware in this thing barely runs the naked OS, so I'm reluctant to add any more.
Anyway, after experiments it's been pretty much a total failure with the sleep wifi thing.
Looks like that 3rd party app will be my last resort, lets just hope it's unobtrusive and has litttle battery drain (aside from the obvious).
Failing that, it's either keep lugging around an iphone or get a data plan. Might sell the iphone to fund it.
You can't seriously consider using the iPhone for this. It's a toy.
I'm sure you'll be happy with rk-OSR.

You;re right, iPhone is a toy, but considering the problems I'm now having downloading email attachments (mp3) and the fact that it doesnt check my mail properly while sleeping, it seems almost worth carrying just to make sure I get my email without having to actively check for it.
I'll take your word though and try rk-OSR and hopefully find a solution to my attachment problem, then I'm a happy happy xperia owner in heaven.
Ok...but.
Ok, got rk-OSR installed and it is working perfectly if I use the "test" button. However, I put the device to sleep, set to sync in a couple of minutes, wait 5 or 6, wake it up myself and nothing. Even the log doesnt have anything after my test attempt. What could be the problem?
still wondering how to get the phone to do this... is it not possible for the phone to check emails while it's in your pocket? such a simple concept yet...
alias_neo and dinan, I found a solution!!! All you have to do is to install GProfile and this program called rk-OSR. You create a time-based profile (in GProfile) and choose a specific time (eg: 1am) to run rk-OSR. You donĀ“t have to select anything else (wifi toggle, etc). Then you select the same time in rk-OSR (1 am) and in this program you select the wifi options. It worked for me.
Hope it helps you

data off??

anybody know is there a way to have my 3g/H /edge connection disabled when the screen is off like in the wifi sleep policy??
seems a bit of a waste having wifi set to sleep when screen is off if the 3g /edge connection becomes active.

One of the main use of a smartphone is to receive emails and such while the screen is off. So the answer is no, but I guess you can find a 3rd party utility on the market that does it if you really want to.
Wifi takes more power than EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA

I use "Superpower" to switch between 3g and 2g when screen is off, but you can also let it disable data (and wifi) completely.

If your life /phone usage would be better not receiving emails etc twenty four hours a day then control your phone to your needs the definition of smart is definitely not email day and night .
A Smartuser who does not depend upon receiving emails twits and facebook then use an App like Quick Settings to turn mobile data off when not needed .
You use the phone dont let it use you .

ok managed to get profile set up for data to switch off when display is off and vice versa.
only thing is in the notifications bar it says 'no active profiles'??
how do i know he its working?

you could add additional "Notify" events for testing, they'll have a timestamp indicating when the even fired.
My Tasks:
Event Display Off
Wait: 10 Seconds (in case it went off for inactivity but I'm still doing stuff)
Mobile Data: Off IF %SCREEN ~ off
Event Display On
Mobile Data: On
Clock From 0:00 every 15 min Till 23:59
Mobile Data: On
Clock From 0:01 every 15 min Till 00:00
Mobile Data: Off IF %SCREEN ~ off
cool. just set this up now. this app is unreal !!!!
thanks for that

[Q] Best Free Battery Saving App?

I've had my Galaxy Note for a week now and am enjoying this awesome device. Battery life is okay and lasts me a day, but I want to get more out of it. I have an unrooted device, by the way.
To me, these are very important:
1. Push e-mail needs to be on.
2. Real time notifications from Twitter and Facebook.
3. Google calendar needs to sync.
My screen brightness is set to 20%, I'm using darker wallpapers to go easy on the screen, and I turn Wi Fi off when I don't need it.
After reading through the threads, it seems that there are three free battery saving apps that stand out- Green Power, Juice Defender, and Easy Battery Saver+Task Killer.
What is the best among the three and won't affect the important things for me?
Appreciate all the inputs.
Unfortunately, none of them.
Each take advantage that while your phone is in your pocket, they can turn off network to save some juice. If you really want RT notifications for any service, push must stay on. In that case, none of the common battery saving applications will work for you.
If you are willing to 5-15m delays on notifications (assuming the screen is off, when you turn the screen on they always restore connectivity), the vast majority of apps will service you well.
P.S. I was hovering the thanks button then I scratched my hand and clicked it by accident. I'm not trying to get to you thank me

this is really useful information for me, so i still clicked on the thanks button.
i'm not willing to sacrifice 5-15 minutes of delays on notifications. assuming that those battery saving apps disconnect the push features with the screen off, it means i'm going to miss tweets and messages from facebook while my phone is in my pocket.

Heh, glad it was.
They will: the way push works is your phone maintain an open connection to Google's servers, and anyone who wants to push a message sends it via Google and they write the data down the open connection. Any delay you find with push is actually the effect of your phone figuring out that connection has broken (i.e. moving from Wifi to 3G) and re-establishing it (at least, that's my understanding, give or take).

What do you receive your FB/Twitter notifications via? I don't connect social services to my phone but if they have their own dedicated apps, then should be safe to kill. If I wanted to be sure, I'd kill it then generate appropriate notifications on Twitter/FB and make sure I got them instantly - but I have the services running and I've nothing setup in them so I certainly would kill them.

[Q] Push Notification Delay (wifi only)

Hi guys... Since updating to kitkat 4.4.4 I've been experiencing this annoying push notification delay on wifi.
Before 4.4.4, the android I used was 4.2.2, and the notification delay didn't occur. I suspect that this is a "feature" for saving battery when in deep sleep.
The delay may vary between 5s~1m. Depending on how long the device is sleep.
When the notifications are delayed, you can receive them inmediatly by just turning the screen on.
Things I've tried:
- Wifi power saving features disabled
- Stamina disabled
- Background data sync allowed
- Changing the prima drivers (at least just the 3 files inside system/etc/firmware/wlan/prima)
Somehow I cant change the .dat file because the wifi will not even connect)
- Router config
I've noticed the exact same behaviour in a zl with android 4.4.4 as well. BUT not present in Samsung devices (at least S3, S4 mini running 4.2.2)
REMEMBER: This problem is NOT present in android 4.2.2
Thx in advance!
I have this delay too.
Make sure the next option is disabled:
Settings -> Power Management -> Uncheck "Queue background data"
Profit.

Oh.. that delay is just when you just turned the screen off. If the phone is idle for, lets say, 15 minutes, the delay is bigger. Between 3 to 15 minutes! That's what bugs me. And what annoys me is the fact that this "delay" is not present in android 4.2.2.

Can't say I've had that issue. Maybe I haven't left my phone idle for that long......
I have the same issue and it only occurs on wifi, not on mobile network. There's no delay on wifi or mobile network when the device is charging.
I disabled ARP offload and wifi power saving. The delays vary between 1-3 minutes since.
I'm not sure if there's a connection, but when you dial *#*#426#*#* you can open the Google Play Services monitor and check "Events". Even on wifi I receive the actual alert (for example facebook messenger) almost immediately, but the notification only occurs once there's a "Flushed GCM com.google.android.gsf.gtalkservice". On wifi it takes a few minutes for this line to show. On mobile network you see it right after the alert happened.
Could that mean that the GCM service is somewhat slower/delayed in order to safe battery on wifi?

That is EXACTLY what happens to me!
I can't understand why nobody cares about this (except andQlimax, who developed PNF). This is completely annoying... where is the "always connected" feature of a smartphone that delays notifications for so long?. For people that rely on this kind of features (partialy, like me) this is completely unnaceptable!!. What's the difference between 4.2.2 and 4.4.4 that makes this work like this??..
You can try "Push Notifications Fixer" from Play Store. I use the root version and works like charm!

How much lag is too much?

I'm curious if anyone else is finding the phone a bit too laggy, or if it's just my setup. I tap an icon or a soft key and there's a 1-2 second delay while the phone thinks about it. I move the phone away from my face when finishing a call and the screen takes 2-3 seconds to reactivate so I can actually tap end to end the call. Is this normal in your experience?
I seem to recall there was not this much lag when I first got the phone, but the odd thing is that I haven't really installed any more apps. I do use Nova, but I don't have any social apps running in the background or GPS enabled or bluetooth enabled. Just WiFi and 3G. I also turned off nearly all the Google services.

The phone is fast for me as well, even recent apps have no delay (there was LAG when GravityBox was installed).
However, I notice the phone call issue you having, selecting the contact and press call, takes 1-2 seconds to get through (no visible UI lag) and after finishing the call, it takes the same amount of time while the CallUI goes away.

no lag here, phone flies. have been stock from day one, it's been four months now. recent apps, transitions, opening and closing apps = all fast. there is the noted lag when starting the camera from the shutter button, and not consistently responsive Tap2Wake, but once the screen is lit up and i'm doing things, i'm happy.
re: finishing a call. just got off the phone a little while ago, and didn't notice any slow behaviour -- certainly nothing like a 2-3 second delay to come on.
OK, so I guess I might have a problem. The weird thing is that sometimes there's a lag launching an app and other times there's not. Must be something running in the background messing with it, not that I normally have much running.
The phone call thing is really annoying though, and has become worse since the firmware update. Often I will have to push the button to get the screen to light up when I want to end a call. It's like the proximity sensor just refuses to do its thing. Guess I'll wait for Lollipop to see if that changes anything.
