Customizing Dock Icons - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible? I really like the stock Messaging app, but for ease of Emoji etc, I like to use Go SMS. Unfortunately it comes with a hideous stock icon, and trying to change it while keeping it in the dock is proving to be quite difficult.
Any ideas without running a third party launcher? I'm trying to keep the phone as light as possible.

Surprised this hasn't been answered yet. Anyway, it's fairly simple. You can only change your docked apps when you have the app drawer open. Simply open the app drawer first, then move the current app in the dock and drop it into the drawer. You can then move any other app from the drawer into its place. Hope that helps.

Sorry, but this doesn't really help me as I can't change the icon for Go SMS when it is in the dock. Using an icon switching app seems to only let me create a Go SMS shortcut with stock Messaging icon on a homescreen, not in the dock or app drawer, which is what I need

Hello all,
As a new user I'm apparently not allowed to post links at all until I'm verified. So that means you'll have to a little leg work to find some things if you're interested.
This is my customized phone. I used the same background in my blog; The icons I made in a roundabout way—Bobbyperux over at Deviantart, made a pretty all inclusive tutorial on how to make them. It even had a video. You'll need to know something about Photoshop and have a tiny bit of patience. I changed the font to futura and the color to white. Except for the android market, ha. Little color never hurt anyone. The phone is rooted, non-market apps are enabled, and I can sync to my itunes with ease. Mac user.
Anywho give it a whirl--the icon pack is called up to date icons.
Id like to change my icon set too. Do you have to be using launcherpro or can u change them on the stock TW?
Thx.

The news widget is called buzz box-- its pretty nifty. You can choose from a ton of sources within the actual widget and it updates the news all day. I don't know how it effects battery life, but my captivate seems to be dealing with it just fine.

Arranging icons in the homescreen

A quick and maybe dumb question: Is there a way to arrange icons in the homescreen just by sliding one on top of the other, like the iPhone?
Thanks in advance!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Thats exactly what you do.
Press and hold the icon the drag it round to where you want it then let go.
Drag it down to the bin icon to remove it.
To place an icon on the home screen, go to the apps screen and press and hold the icon you want on the home screen. Only let go when you see the home screen appear.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Sorry if I haven't made myself clear, what I mean is if it's possible to drag an icon on top of another so they switch places.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
as far as I know it is only possible in the TouchWiz App Launcher (when you are in the edit mode),
but you can't change places on the homescreen like on the iPhone. (not with standart launcher)
This was something I was surprised by as well... it's like having one of those puzzle sliders at times to get everything where I want it!

Even more annoying to me is the fact, that folders don't close when the home button is pressed / an app is launched. I think that's quite irritating...Oo

What do you mean by the "menu bar"?
I guess he's talking about the bar at the bottom.
Yes, it's possible!
Press the Applications icon at the bottom, then press the menu button, press on edit, and you are now able to drag new icons to the bottom bar.
Thank you!
I gotta say... I REALLY, REALLY LOVE THIS PHONE!
After discovering this, I'm not gonna change my launcher yet, I got a paid version of LauncherPro, but i like the horizontal scrolling in the appdrawer.

What ru using for widgets in your launcher?

The idea of using another launcher on the gear, really makes it worthwhile.
Those of you who are using a different launcher, what are some of the widgets you are using?

I'm sorry to ask such a basic question...but once you have Pie or UDN installed how do you lock the UCCW widget? Is it in the UCCW app or is it on the homescreen when you're looking at the widget? I really appreciate everyone's help!
I have 2 different screens set up in Nova and I change between them depending on if I'm at work or not. The one I use at work has Simple Calendar widget to show me my schedule as well as the time above it using Minimalistic Text widget.
The one I use when not at work is more minimal/stylish and just has a battery bar up the top and time in the middle. Both are Minimalistic Text widgets.
I also use LMT to give me a menu, home and back button when I swipe up from the bottom edge. I set the swipe zone to 1 pixel so you can't see it and you don't accidentally tap it when tapping icons in the dock.
I also set up the home button to toggle the dock in Nova. Before I did that, I found I would often accidentally turn the watch on with a motion and tap one of the dock icons if I was standing with my hands behind my back or arms crossed or something.

How do you get the Minimalistic Text widget setup on your Gear? I created a widget on my phone, then exported it, then moved it to my Gear, but can't get Minimalistic Text on my Gear to recognize it. Can't figure out how to her to the menu to Import it.
Any help appreciated.

I think you have to create/add a widget on your home screen first, then go into the Minimalistic Text preferences from the app drawer.
Select the widget you created, then from the menu options select import.

Where are icons located?

Does anyone know the directory/folder where the "app drawer" icon is located? I plan to modify/change the icon to match the rest of my icons and theme. I dont want to use a launcher I just would like to locate the file so that if possible, I can change it manually.

Yeah, I know, it seems like they really didn't want that app drawer icon messed with. But now that I think about it , I may be completely wrong. It may not even be an icon at all but maybe something more like a widget.

Have you tried this app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jy.iconchanger.ad I think it may work for icons one by one, I think I've read about people using it for the app drawer icon. For applying icon packs system wide, the Xposed module Unicon is great for that. Especially the beta version, it has the ability to use icons from multiple packs using the custom icon assignment feature. Theming the app drawer icon is also a plan for the future, just currently not available.

Thanks for the info, I like the app. I just flashed a new ROM so I'll be making use of it here soon. And theming the app drawer icon would be a great addition to the xposed module. Right now to get the look I want (all icons being same shape and size) I have to switch between themes that use either a round appdrawer icon or a square one. And then have to have all round icons or all square icons otherwise the appdrawer icon sticks out like a sore thumb. But the app you referred helps to find matching icons, thank you. I'll check out the xposed module too, probably tomorrow.

I'm thinking now that the app drawer icon is actually part of the theme more so then an actual icon. Could be wrong but would explain why there is no actual icon anywhere.

I'd think the themes for the LG launcher work similar to Nova launcher themes. Skinning images in the LG launchers res folder. If you browse through the LG launcher apk you should see a res folder, with other folders inside. Somewhere there would be a app drawer icon. Usually to replace that, you have to use something like apk tool to decompile the launcher apk, change the launcher icon to whatever you want and recompile and install the apk, or go through the same method with a launcher theme. Decompiling it and so on. Which might be a little easier. I've never browsed through the LG launcher, but that's how it works on other launchers usually. The icon changer app would be a far easier approach if it actually works. But I'm not 100% sure it will since I haven't actually tried it.

That information is very much appreciated. That is exactly the info I've been looking for. I just came over to android from iOS so I'm still getting familiar with everything. I run Linux on my PC though so I'm picking it up quick. Anyways thanks again for the info.
Icons are not stored in the system. They are pulled from the apk files and then listed in the app drawer. This is all done via the XML and java files in the system.apk and then the application.apk. There isnt a way to just swap out a icon unless you use a modding app or you decompile the apk and rebuild with a new icon. If you want a perm way of change the icon, you can pull the apk from your phone and then open it with 7zip, and then just replace the icons in the /res.drawable-* folder. Other then that you need a modding app
The app drawer icon was the only icon I was having trouble figuring out how to customize. I really appreciate the information you provided already but do you happen to have information pertaining to the app drawer icon itself?
