Just want to get this off my chest. I purchased an 8 gig nexus 7 online immediately after it was released. Being an iPhone user and having little to no experience with android products I fell in love. Good bye iOS. A few weeks ago I forgot that my nexus 7 was in my back pocket and got into my truck and cracked the hell out of the screen. I was not a happy camper. $200 and a trip to Staples later and I replaced my 8 gig with a 16. Wonderful. With the exception of the fact that the same day I bought my replacement and I was flipping through flipboard I read that Google is probably releasing a second gen nexus 7 this summer. Now I wish I would have waited for the latest and greatest for the same price. Only question now is should I return this unit and then go back in couple months for the second gen?

Enjoy your 16GB Nexus. The 2nd gen will be improved but not greatly. Wait for gen 3.
I say hold onto it. If the new N7 seems like its worth the upgrade sell.

I think that you should keep it, 1st gen nexus 7 is a nice powerful device, off course 2nd gen will perform better, and I want to say that if you can live without it for 3 months, why not? But am afraid of the availability of the 2nd gen and also afraid of first batch...

Early adopters gonna adopt... early
I ordered the Nexus 7 16gb from Google the day preorders became available and I was one of the lucky ones that received mine on time and didn't have any of the issues that came along with many of the first run of devices like the screen separation or bad flicker or screen washout. So with that being said, I wouldn't count on being that lucky again. I'm going to hold onto mine until I see what all is going to go wrong with the first runs of the 2nd gen N7's because if I had had as many problems as others had with theirs I would definitely not be a repeat customer.

Return it and wait!!!
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I'd say return it and wait, if they do announce the 2nd gen Nexus 7 it is most likely to be released a month after it's announcement, therefore it would be out by next month, Google I/O is only a few days away now, if there's no such thing and it was all rumors you can just buy the Nexus 7 again.
Don't wait for any new generation models. Simply enjoy what you currently have. If you keep waiting for the next best device you will never end up enjoying anything.
Say the 2nd generation Nexus comes out, and just a month later a better tablet in the same price range comes out from another manufacturer. What then? Just buy what you want and enjoy it and stop worrying over products which don't even exist yet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272029
Here's a list of specs of the next N7. I wouldn't call that jaw-droping. It just isn't impressive enough for me to ditch my current N7. But if by some reasons you want a rear camera and a Qualcomm chip then you should wait for it.
I do believe in getting as much as you can for your dollar.
I would use the N7 as long as you can before your return period. The I/O conference is this Wednesday. Well know more then.
But for $200, do you want this years model or last years?
I have a N7 and its wonderful. Typically on Nexus devices, you can easy get 2 years out of them before wanting to upgrade.
If you own a current N7, upgrading doesn't make sense. But if you are new and have the option of one or the other, I'd say the new one.
Faster processor, rear camera (which is useless on a tab IMO), higher resolution screen, Qi wireless charging, newer Android, an extra year of official support, more ram, etc.
I'm picking one up for lots of reasons.
1. Support the Nexus project.
2. New toy
3. Pass off the first gen as a gift to family member
4. Above items

No, because you will never be happy. Technology moves on, the Nexus 7 has been around for a year, a refresh is possible (but still not confirmed), and Apple are no different in this respect.
Call it a Nexus7s and you see that there is NEVER a right time to buy. Be happy that you have a unit that has refined production process with none of the niggles that early units sometimes had...
The Nexus7 is a great device, worth every penny, and it holds it's resale value well. Enjoy it for what it is, and don't try and surf the bleeding edge way, you will always be frustrated...
If you always wait for the next model, you'll never buy anything.
Its worth the upgrade. The tegra 3 was just about a year old the time the N7 came out. The S4 Pro isn't nearly as old, so it has a more current gen CPU this time around. Its a relatively inexpensive device.. its not like its 500$ every year.. whats 200$ nowadays? I've had my N7 since launch.. and the Next gen is going to be a first day buy for me. Im currently selling my N7 and will use those funds for the next gen. As one brought out.. use it as long as your return period allows you and return it for full price.. save the money and get the next gen.
And please ignore all the , "Wait for next years!" crap.. with that logic.. you'll keep waiting.. Next year they'll say the same thing.
I guess it depends if you bought it because you really wanted to do something with it or because you just wanted to check it out. If you just need a toy and you feel like you can wait, then you should.
You know what renews an old device? A shiny new update software can only go so far though.

+1 THIS!
And now some new rumors suggest that the new gen of Nexus 7 will be revealed on June 10.
Even if you wait till then getting the hands on the device might add a few weeks more as i'm pretty sure the first shipment will be gone in a day.
In short, keep your Nexus 7 and wait until you see the specs and availability before deciding to sell your Nexus 7.
Well if it was anything like last year, Staples and other local outlets will have them. I didn't have a problem finding one at all locally. Eventually the 16gb's started to become rare but there were plenty of 8gbs. And the 32gb version I bought at OfficeMax before it was even supposed to be released and didn't have a problem. They had a "skid" of them, they said.
I agree that trying to order one on Google Play will be tight though... but I've always had relief in buying one locally so that if there was a problem, I could just take it back and get my money back or exchange it on the spot. Shipments through Google Play last year were pretty horrendous with shipments lasting weeks.

Is the Nexus 7 one of the most of the anxious devices you have purchased?
For me, yes
I answered yes but mostly because it's the first thing I've ever pre-ordered, which instantly makes it the longest I've ever had to wait to receive a shiny new toy.
Second most anxious device (after Nexus One).
I dunno, but when I get mine I'll ask it.
As anxious as when I first got my iPad 1
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Don't know. Google hasn't specified it's anxiousness so hard to say . I am anxious about receiving it though
I hope it isn't too anxious because I have no idea how I would safely administer Valium to it. I'm fairly happy to be getting it though.
More anxious than when I was going to get my iPad
first real android tablet!! waiting is killing me!
I don't pre-order stuff because I'm very impatient, this is the first time I've pre ordered anything and the wait it is killing me.
I specified that I wanted one that was already on Xanax.
I am always anxious to get ANY new device
Dunno if anything will ever exceed the happiness of me getting my first USR 28K Sportster modem as a kid. Partly because it was the most expensive thing I ever bought with my paper route money.
I'm a early adopter and love my gadgets. Maybe the original Palm Pilot had the most anticipation for me followed by my first iPhone.
I was telling my wife last night about reading on Compuserve that the Palm Pilot was in stores, calling Circuit City and begging the guy to hold one for me for and hour. I called my boss and told him I had a personal emergency and went to get my Pilot.
I won't need to call off work to get my Nexus, I work at GameStop.
I'm pretty excited but a new toy is always exciting
Ever preorder thread has been like this. The tf101 preorder thread was intense, for example.

Soon to be former HTC Flyer owner here. I just ordered my 16GB Nexus 7 today. I had just paid $200 for my Flyer in February, and to be honest it was a great tablet hardware wise but ruined by lackluster support by HTC. It hit EOL status way too soon, and got cut off from support at honeycomb. I spent the last month debating whether or not to keep it or cut my losses and get a Nexus 7 and Finally Monday I decided I'm not happy with the Flyer, it didn't live up to my expectations, so on Ebay it went. Haven't sold it yet, but decided to go ahead and charge the Nexus 7 before they sell out again.
Very excited and looking forward to receiving it! BTW how long does it take for google to process and ship the order?
i ordered my nexus late afternoon on monday, and it is suppose to arrive tomorrow according to the trackingt number from UPS. So i am gonna guess 3-4 days.

2 day shipping means that the actual shipping takes 2 days - they can still take a long time to process it.

Seriously??????????
How on earth has Google lied about 2 day shipping?
I assume that you have ordered online before and are aware that means delivery is 2 days from when it is shipped and not 2 days from when you click the order button...
If you have never ordered anything online before then please excuse my sarcasm....

?? There is a difference between when you Order it and when they ship it. When they ship it, it is 2 day business delivery. It may however take more than 2 days before the ship the unit from your order.
I think they did great. When I ordered it July 19th, the order page said ETA 3-4 WEEKS.... They shipped it 6 days later, and it arrived within 2 business days of the shipping date.
The only people who seem to have had issues with shipping had...
o Problems with Customs, not much Google can do about that
o Shipping issues with UPS, again, it is out of their hands once they hand it off.
From what I've seen, Google has refunded shipping costs when this happened which is just about all they can do.
They are not "lieing" .... and are not lying either.
Woa....
Sorry didn't mean to get everyone riled up. Just don't quite understand what 2 day shipping means from Google. I've been ordering stuff online for over 10 years. Just sayin 2 day shipping from say newegg would mean ordering yesterday would get me my stuff by Friday.
But from what I've seen it sounds like the 2 day shipping is actually 3 to 5 days so no that doesn't make much sense.
Sounds like they just aren't providing all the details like processing time etc. Sorry I just hate waiting on shipping! I have planned on buying it from a store until I read about the warranty.
Sent from my De-Sensed HTC Vivid using Tapatalk 2
that's because they ship same day. 2day shipping only applies to the time it spends in transit by a carrier. Processing and handling time is a different story. if you order say, a custom computer from dell, you can get 3-5 days shipping but it takes them a week to build it. so the system will arrive to its destination a week + 3-5 days.
tldr: shipping time =/= ETA. Handling & processing is not calculated in shipping time.
EDIT: you also have to consider the terms and conditions of the shipping service. most of them are business days only and some are based purely on time spent in transit regardless of it being a business day or not.

When it's here I won't care. Sorry didn't want to start off my first official post with the community on a bad note. Trust me I know Google is a Web product company not a physical product company so things might take longer and shipping is going to cost more than say amazon who ships out millions of products every day. And the petition for the. $14 shipping charge is just lunacy! I went through the play store because the warranty service is better and you get a $25 Google play credit. I'm sure the wait and the shipping charges will be worth it over buying it directly from a retailer.
Google is my favorite company, and this will be my 4th android device, love the os. Sorry again if I offended

Yeah lack of support. I wanted a nice tablet and didn't want to pay a mint. I was actually looking at a Anol novo 7 Chinese tablet with ics on it but I found this flyer refurbished for 200 and figured with Htc I'd get better support. Unfortunately the updated to honeycomb which made it a bit laggy, and web browsing sucked on it. Even Google hates honeycomb as you can't get chrome for it. It's like an ics beta, and in may htc decided all their tablets would stay on honeycomb. Hardware and build quality wise it was awesome but I was mulling over the nexus ever since I got it. We got a good ics rom in the works, borrowing drivers from the one v and desire HD but it has ways to go and overall I finally decided not happy with the flyer, and I really want a nexus, so I went with my heart!
And the 2 day shipping is no lie, getting it tommorrow! Very excited. Im loosing some features like mhl: never used it, rear camera: pretty useless just a toy on a tablet and the flyers camera was pretty grainy anyway, sd slot in which I found just didn't need one. I eventually put one in but only for cwm purposes, selling it with the flyer as a deal sweetner. And vibrate too, but I eventually turned it off on the flyer as it just wasn't needed, it just drained the battery more. So that stuff the nexus is missing is not important to me
And who wouldn't want a chance to play with jelly bean now instead of hoping your phone might get it after key lime pie comes out? Very excited!

Hey guys,
Just bought a Nexus 7 (32 GB wifi) for $250 ($230+$20 tax), but I still have the option of returning it. I read up somewhere that the Nexus 7 2nd gen is coming in march, and may be cheaper?? Do you guys think it is worth the wait? If it will be cheaper and have some noticeable improvements, I don't mind waiting for a couple months. Hope it will be cheaper too.
What do you guys know about Google's second iteration? Are you going to wait or did you snag one for Christmas?
I would wait because it will mostly have a tegra 4 of s4 pro so just wait for it and when all these Ppl have nexus7 1st gen you have the newest nexus 7 2nd gen and then u laugh at them and that's how it works lol

I only want to get the second generation because I am buying a Nexus already late in the game (and close to the 2nd gen coming out, apparently). I'm not going to wait for the 3rd one just when the 2nd one comes out, that's silly. But if a better Nexus 7 is coming out within a few months for cheaper, I know I'll regret buying this one.
I would suggest just keep nexus 7, but it's your choice.
I personally think that one cannot buy any electronic devices by waiting for the next new stuff, because a lot of new stuffs are gonna keep coming out.

Of course I'm going to be flamed for people thinking that I always want the next and better thing. I only was going to wait because of a rumor of it coming in another month or two, and cheaper. With that logic who wouldn't wait a month for a cheaper, better Nexus 7? If it's true it would be a waste to buy one now. I am not saying that I want to hop onto the upgrade bandwagon.

There is a rumor about low-end Nexus 7 ($ 99) in this quarter, but I don't know if that is what you are talking about. Maybe I'm the only one that don't know about 2nd generation. I really don't care about new stuff personally... I bought PSP-1005 one week before SONY release PSP-2005, and I never really think about returning it for change or regret about my purchase. I bought my Nexus 7 32gb 3 weeks ago, and even if 2nd generation came out this February, I don't think I will care for it.
If you really want the 2nd generation (I think you do), just return it before you regret it.

It isn't, next one will be Tegra 4 and that's not ready yet.
The nexus 7 was announced at Google I/O last year. This year I/O is scheduled for May 15. If they announce a new model it would be then. However, I very much doubt a new, upgraded Nexus 7. Most likely a new $99 low end model if anything. Upgraded 2nd gen at the end of the year with the other nexus devices.

As has already been said, it's totally up to you how you spend your money BUT I honestly think that if you wait around for the 'next best thing' you'll always be disappointed.
The Nexus 7 is an amazing device and is even better because of the pretty cheap price. Yes there's always a chance that a new version could be released if you decide to buy one now, but there's no guarantee that it will.
Don't play the waiting game because there is always going to be something better around the corner. It makes sense with non-nexuses because you have to worry about OS upgrades, but with nexuses you know Google will take care of you with OS updates. Plus the nexus is only $200, if Google releases something awesome that you absolutely must have, sell the nexus for 100 on craigslist and by the new one.
Depends on where you stay and how much you are willing to spend though... For me i stay in Singapore so there is no official playstore that sells the nexus 7 i have to wait for ASUS to import it here so the prices are quite high even now. 16GB wifi version averages out at SGD350 and it took months before it reached here. So if i where to wait for the new one then im out of luck .. Very likely that it will reach here only next year == So im not waiting and getting it this weekend Thats my story
I agree that waiting around is useless in most cases but Nexus devices get updated yearly and it is almost time for a new model.
I personally think a higher resolution 7" model will be a waste of resources since the N7 already has such a high DPI. If the current screen is "retina" type where individual pixels aren't visible to the naked eye, then why upgrade further?
The N7 is a fantastic device and I can't recommend any other 7" tablets. Seriously, the N7 is cheap enough at $200 and you can sell it or repurpose it if you ever want to upgrade.
May is several months away and who knows when the actual release date will be. I'd buy one now. At $200, it is better then being without one for who knows how long.

Like others have said, if you always wait for the next device which will be better, you'll always be waiting because every new device will be better.
BUT, since I/O is just 2 months away, I would recommend you wait IF you can live without a tablet for a while. But if you desperately need a tablet now and don't wish to wait, you won't regret getting the current N7. I have it and am very happy with it i.e. won't be upgrading to the newer model.
Its 200 bucks m8. You barely feel it over the budget. ehehe, and to be honest, its a brilliant piece of device, it isnt perfect but believe me when i tell you that its very very close to perfection, and its pretty, slim and accurate (and most of the N7 will agree with me on this one ). That question though is subjective because in the N7 case, Google ordered asus to make a TOP OF THE FOOD-CHAIN device of THE tablet's jungle, with the price of a Jungle Fly lol, (and they got the formula right since its the top seller for tablets atm). Now lets put it another way, obviously Google will order some new piece of tech even more raw than N7, but raw-ness costs money, imagine that a N7 II comes out with an outstanding octa-core? It will not cost 200 i tell you that much.
The more time you waste dueling on the should or should not, the more time you loose with the Nexus 7, go with the odds, N7 isnt the best of THE best only because of the low budget factor.
P.s. As much as i wanted to, i do not work for Google or asus, ehehe.

I got a raise and bonus at work, and I've been playing with the idea of getting the Nexus 6P.......I know though the HTC Nexus is just 6 months or so away......think I should wait for the new one this year or pick it up ?
Nothing wrong with my Nexus 6, great phone not damaged. In fact, I have never dropped the phone in the past 6 months of owning. If I did get the 6P, I wouldn't sell my 6.....still love it plus it's my first Nexus so there's lots of sentimental value obviously.
I would do it... But at this point I would wait for a huge discount, similar to the one that got me my Nexus 6 at $250 on amazon lol

Yeah that's what I was also thinking....if the price were slashed even more, I'd do it without question, but given that it's been out for awhile and still priced originally that's why I'm "eh"

Well, right now its $50 off on amazon, that's a good deal. It might go even further but you'll have to wait a couple of months I guess.

Yeah I saw the amazon deal as well. I'll probably just wait until the price drops more. I have a hard time justifying the purchase given that it's been out for awhile and the price isn't a huge drop yet. It's one thing if it just came out or was -$150 off, but -$50 they have been doing for awhile now.
It's $50 off on the Google store too isn't it?

To be honest I would wait for the new nexus line to come out. The 6p really isn't all that much better then the 6. I even picked the 6 over the 6p.
Me, I'd wait too. It's always nice to have money to burn, but if you're thinking of spending a huge wodge of cash for a phone which will be superseded in six months then you earn too much...
I've had my N6 for about 15 months and I still love it. I've bought Nexus devices since the Nexus 4 (so I've had the 4, 5, 6, 7 & 10), but I saw no point in replacing such a great device as the N6 with another one with a smaller screen and a suspect CPU.
I reckon in six months when the Nexus 6P+ comes out (Snapdragon 820... mmm...) you'll be kicking yourself for your impatience and prodigality.
I would wait too until the next nexus came out. I got mine 6 months ago and wouldn't replace it with a 6P, its just too expensive. I will see what the next nexus brings and if it isn't worth upgrading i wait till the 2017 version. My N6 will still be running fast by that time.
i am waiting it out, i also have my Nexus 6 for like about 8 months or so , and i love it.
it is my first nexus too, i will wait until the price drops from 499 down to 399 .
then might get one
I say no, I bought a 6P to replace my 6 with a broken power button. I had to remap the power button to volume down. After getting the Nexus 6P it still wasn't worth it, even with the problems of my 6. I sent back the 6P the day I got it. The new Nexus will be out it about 6 months or so. Hold out on getting it. The 6P will start dropping in price and depreciating value soon. If you have money from your bonus set it aside for the new one to guarantee you have the finances on preorder day (coming from a college student, may not be relevant for someone who works and had disposable income. This was just my reasoning behind my decision).

One thing that I don't like about the 6p is that it is by Huawei. Motorola is pretty good for customer service like broken screens and whatnot but I've heard mixed reviews with Huawei.
I think I'm just going to wait esp since my 6 is working without any problems.
Id prefer to buy from HTC vs Huawei tbh anyways.
OK Im just going to skip the 6p and see what happens this fall. Maybe pre-order the new HTC one. The HTC M10 actually looks nice. They have been putting out junk since the M8 so it looks like they have it right this time.
I'd wait for the 2016 Nexus since the 6P isn't a major upgrade over the 6 unless you really want USB type C and fingerprint sensor. However, I wouldn't be worried about the 6P being made by Huawei. In addition to the 6P, they've made some really nice phones like the P8, Honor 7 and Mate S. Huawei's customer service might not be the best but Motorola has recently had their own issues with warranty service.

Lol, took the words right out of my mouth, bought a 6p last week of amazon, used it for two days and boxed it, and will be returning it this week. I'm now on a N6. N6p heat issues were evident for me with pretty simple tasks.
I also though, the next Nexus should be along pretty soon, why would I pay $500 for a phone I'll trade off for the Nexus 7, if I can have a N6 for pretty much 1/3 of that.
Best decision I've made.
The N6p is not a bad phone, its a great phone if you ignore the 810's heat issues, but aside from that I just didn't like the feeling of the phone, its too thin, for me it felt delicate like it could break easily, and it felt extremely uncomfortable in my big hands. Then N6 feels just right.

That was another factor. If I were to pay full price for it I should have gotten it last Fall. Seems pointless now unless it's heavily discounted just b/c it has been out for awhile. There is a possibility that the new Nexus may be very similar to the new HTC M10 which I would not mind. I'm curious as to where the price point will fall for the new Nexus. IMO, for the Nexus phone, the base should be under $500. They have been slowly ratcheting up the price and it's for feature I think are redundant and only to compete against Samsung when their actual audience is oriented differently.

Welll I do hope the release a 5.5 + screen. I've heard wonders about the 5x, all the reviews tend to be positive, but I hate small screens.
Honestly, if you think of it, $550 for a High End phone with speedy updates and no drama (looking at you 1+1) is pretty cheap.
Another fact I forgot to mention, from what I saw 6P development sucks big time compared to N6 development. Devs just don't want to work with 810 devices.

For me the ideal size would be 5.5" like the Note. The Nexus 6 is slightly on the larger size, but I can live with it. If it were a bit lighter that would be perfect.
The Nexus 6p isn't too pricey at $499 + I'll admit and I don't need more than 32GB myself. I OTG frequently so space isn't an issue. The fingerprint scanner for example, I don't need and would rather not have it and save money. The wireless charging is also a gimmick as well along with NFC payment systems so if they got rid of that I'd be happy.
This is just me, but I think the Nexus 5 was the best approach, and the Nexus 6 is even my first Nexus, I never owned the 5. Retail $349 with specs available in 2013 was great. If they brought it up to 5.5" and charged $400 that would be good as well.
The Nexus 6 price point at over $600 was pretty ridiculous....fortunately I only paid $200 brand new in box. If they brought down the price to the $350-$375 people would probably upgrade every year.
I'm the outlier I guess. I've been a Nexus 6 user, which I loved, for well over a year and decided to get the 6p almost two weeks ago. This is the best device I've owned. I love it. I paid $550 for the 64 GB and consider it a great bargain. No heat issues. Extremely fast device. Great hardware. I love the fingerprint scanner and the camera is fantastic. Really good battery too.

This thread has been a great encouragement to me as I just picked up an N6 on eBay for a little over $200, and was wondering if I should have gone with the 6p. I just couldn't justify the added expense though. I've got an N10 that I use every day and look forward to continuing that experience with my phone. I'm coming from an unlocked, s-off m8 and I've gotten spoiled by active development and complete freedom.
