Hi Guys,
I have read a lot of the threads but I cant seem to find the right one, perhaps there is a guide that I cant find?
Anyway, I have an xperia Z on stock I unlocked the bootloader a few months ago without problem but I never got round to flashing a rom, now there seems to be a lot more to choose from I would like to flash, but theres a few things that are slightly confusing me.
1: Can I just flash any rom because I have an unlocked bootloader?
2: if yes to question 1, could someone please point me to a guide.
3: do I need to root to be able to flash a rom?
4: if yes to question 3, please could someone point me to a guide
5: Do I just need to use flash tool to flash a custom rom?
6: if yes to question 5 please can someone point me to a guide? (I found a guide in the general forum, but it only refers to flashing a stock rom, abd I am interested in custom roms)
7: Am I miising something completely?
sorry for all the questions, I have previously flashed roms on HTC and Samsung phones but this sony seems a little different.
I would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer.
Thanks
1. Yes (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2153167)
3. Yes (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2154310)
You can also use (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186423)
5. Flashtool is used for flashing only stock roms and kernels (custom kernels (Unlocked BL) or stock (Locked BL), You should use recovery to install custom roms (link in 1)
7. Yes you are - the kernel. Hope you would be moving to CM or AOSP, in such cases you should flash their respective kernel before flashing the rom. Refer to link 1. The kernels will be provided by themselves and you can also use flashtool to do the same!
Hit THANKS if I helped!

Comeon..... Go to dev thread all instructions are very exhaustive and if u have a unlocked bootloader why to worry..... Flash any rom u will be fine... U will find all instructions clearly laid down
Unlocking your bootloader allows you to use the likes of cm 10 and as op also it i is then very easy to install roms, if you ever have to recover with flashtool ftf then after completing you just flash dooms kernel and then there you have cwm, rooting is very easy doom lord created a self rooting zip which you flash in cwm. No more flash ftf, root, install cwm. Also you are able to factory test / wipe cache in cwm because dooms kernel will just rebuild files needed
a lot of custom roms are already prerooted I think there are 2 which isn't, 1 is zeroinfintitys

Hi, this might be asked a hunded times before, but i'm new to ROMs and looking for some feedback.
What are the steps for using a Custom ROM? Is it at all recommended for someone that haven't rooted his phone to go down that path already or should i stick with more basic stuff for now?
Is there any step by step good guide to start? I've been trying to root my phone using odin, but it's failing, will need to research a bit more.
Thank you
you need rooted device to install custom rom, because they use CWM recovery wish needs device to be rooted
rooting your phone is as easy as saying it , dont worry.
the easiest way is to flash jw4 gingerbread(2.3.6),and flash cf-root afterwards CF-ROOT , flash the version compatible with jw4 it is down there in the first page. read thoroughly before flashing.
any other question, feel free to post here i will help if i can.

I'm trying to install now following this instructions for this custom ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776738
Basically i rooted with the jvu, then the CT-ROOT kernel, and now i'm stuck at installing the ROM, it brings a .zip which i tried to copy to the internal memory. There's a signed and an unsigned version of the zip, the signed gives "signature validation error", the unsigned gives "no space on the device error"
You need to flash CM9 first before flashing anything based on CM9/CM10 or any ICS/Jelly Bean ROM in general. First flashing will give you a bootloop, don't worry and flash again!

thanks
Greetings everyone.
As the title says, I'm a new proud owner of this phone and wish to tinker a bit with it, to smooth out performance and battery life (specially the latter). I am currently navigating this forum to find answers to all my questions, and am only creating this topic as a "fail-safe" to assure I find (and understand correctly) the answers I'm looking for.
First, the beast:
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband: L620_MODEM_SIC_02.121601
Kernel: 2.6.39.4
Build: IML74K
Software Version: LG-P880-V10h-NOV-19-2012
Probably too much info, but better safe than sorry. I've found guide on rooting and bootloader unlock (although I'm unsure if I'll use it for now, I'll play around with stock for the time being).
Now, here come the questions:
1. Can you only install CWM \ TWRP with an unlocked bootloader?
2. CWM says "only for 4.0.3", does it mean that it can only be installed in that version or will it only work with that Android version? (EXTRA: if there's any better recovery alternative that I've missed so far, please do point it).
3. I'm planning on using CPU Controller to set my max to 1.2Ghz (have a Vita, so the phone won't be used for gaming), I shouldn't have any issues, but a confirmation would be nice nonetheless.
4. After rooting (and mayhaps bootloader unlocking), could I safely update to stock JB? Would I lose any of the procedures if I did?
As I said, I'll keep lurking around to try and find an answer to these questions. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Firstly u need to update to official JB to unlock the bootloader & then root it & install CWM, since ICS bootloader can't be unlocked so no custom kernels.
1. yes u can install CWM with an unlocked bootloader
2. CWM & its procedure to install on ICS & JB is different.
3. No issues when you underclock your phone.
4. Yes after rooting ICS also you update to official JB.
Lastly i would recommend you to first update to official JB, then root, unlock bootloader, install CWM & then finally go with all roms, mods & kernels.

First off, thanks for answering.
Can CWM only be installed with an unlocked bootloader, or can I add it without having to unlock? That was more the point of my question.

You need UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER in order to install any custom recovery like CWM or TWRP. The best way to install CWM is Rom Manager from Play Store.
I have already answerd most of your questions with proper links availabe here on XDA here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42058399#post42058399

That's all I ever needed to know, many thanks! The order was confusing me (coming from a LWW, where you could install CWM without unlocking), and I didn't want to mess anything up. Time to fire up the JB upgrade.
So i have decided to give my galaxy mini a new life with custom roms.
I have done my fair share of readin
I am not a complete noob and know my way around with these things
But i am still confused on some questions
1.Do i have to root before installing cwm recovery? I don't think that is a necessity
2. What do i have to do to return to stock?
As far as i have read, i just have to redo the steps taken to update to 2.3.x . (the phone is already on 2.3 to start with)will that be all?? I read phones getting bricked and flashing all 4 files to go back to stock and what not.
Can any one provide comprehensive steps or a link may be to return to complete stock including the stock recovery?
3. Also, can anyone link me up to stock firmwares And the necessary drivers? I live in INDIA.
Thank you!
I am new to rooting and stuff.
So recently I bought Sony Xperia SP C502 .
The current firmware version is 12.1.A.1.205 .
I want to root my phone and install eXistenZ 4.0.0( rom based on stock rom )
My bootloader is locked.
Bootloader unlock is allowed.I don't want to unlock the bootloader.
Is it possible to root and install the rom without unlocking the bootloader ?
Will rooting and installing the rom automatically unlock it ?
please help I am a noob.

See bro
Root it using app called towel root
Install super su not from play store
Install busybox installer from playstore
Install a custom recovery
And flash it
You won't be unlocking your bootloader
You can flash it on locked bootloader too.Flashing this rom won't unlock your bootloader
Existenz Ultra 4.0.0 - Awesome Rom

Steps for Switching Rom
I am currently using Cm11 on sony xperia sp, I have a unlocked BL and root access.
I would like to switch to a new custom rom now like XperianZe. I tried also, and in the process i bricked and also had a bootloop.
Can anyone please explain the detailed steps to do a fresh install to a new custom rom like XperianZe.

Just follow the mentioned instructions in the respective thread. And as for Xperianz as you mentioned, you have to read this post.
Based on the post, it seemed the installation is straight forward. What makes you have a bootloop? Did you flashed the kernel mentioned in the thread via fastboot?

yes, you guessed correct. i tried flashing the kernel. And the phone didn't start at all.. not even power up.
Later i read a post in XDA, in which it was described that i should do a hard rest by pushing the hole button at back and then try to boot.
Tats when i got boot-loop. I again flashed the custom kernel (DooMLoRD) and did installed CM11 again using CM recovery. Then the phone booted cm 11.
I followed this link and tried doing so. which resulted in phone not powering up and then boot-loop.
So now if i install Xperianz ROM following instruction in this link, it should be working properly correct?
Am sorry if am asking dump questions. Now am a bit scared to try to switch to this cutom ROM as i may end up bricking the phone again. The thing is I really don't want to mess it up again.
I am new to rooting n playing around with custom ROM. CM11 was my first try and was a success in first go.
Thank you for helping me.

I am concerned about how you flashed the kernel. How did you flash the kernel provided in the thread? Did you use adb or FlashTool?
If you want to try any other you can use Existenz as it require only the stock kernel.

I used FLashtool to flash the kernal.
If my understanding is correct, As of now i am not on stock kernal. When instaling CM11, I flashed the kernal of DoomLord for getting CM 6. recovery.
If this is the case should i flash the stock kernal first and then give a try for Existenz?

Well Existenze require most Sony things out of the box, so you'll first need to have Stock ROM in place before flashing it's ZIP. I've dug through the Xperianze thread for you and seemed like your problem is not to be found in the thread. If you really want to try out Xperianze, you might want to flash the kernel via fastboot using adb, rather than Flashtool.

So i rooted and had custom roms on my Z1 lastyear but had to go back to origional due to network issues i had and left it stock since going through rooting it and the whole process i didnt want to do again.
the problem i am having is the original threads that I looked up ALL the download links for the files required and Nut's .ftf are unavailable...
is there any new links threads that im missing out on? i looked at the thread on the development forum but same deal , dead links
currently sitting at
C6906
4.3
3.4.0-perf-g4f35567
14.2.A.0.290
i believe this is the rom i need to downgrade to hence why i didnt update.
any help would be appreciated. i can use the guides for the process and commands to use inside flashtool, i just need the correct files so i dont have the incorrect network problems i had before, and i dont want to brick my phone either.

Ok so you should first download Z1-lockeddualrecovery2.8.3-RELEASE.installer.zip, just google it, I cant put links up.
Unzip it and execute the install script, make shure you activate USB Debbuging, it will ask you if you are rooted or not, if not it will still install custom recovery and you can root from there, you can also flash custom roms from there.
just a few things i gotta clear up if someone could answer :
Since im on a locked bootloader, which development thread do i use...
do i flash custom kernals or no? (pretty sure this would brick since the bootloader is locked?)
i know how to flash customs i just dont wanna go through the process of soft bricking and getting flashmod and sony to restore it like last time...
Edit:
i can get it rooted, and dual recovery installed... but every rom i try to install (even when it says its compatable) i get a sony logo or nothing at all...
do i have to update to 490 first?
