Hey all. Wondering if it's possible to charge the phone while using the following setup.
OTG cable into the phone. Powered USB hub into the OTG cable.
Can the phone even be charged while using OTG, since OTG is meant to power other devices?
I'm trying to find a decent setup to allow me to charge the phone, use a wired controller, and possibly an MHL. I could always just use a Bluetooth controller and the Media Link HD and charge the phone, but is it possible the other way?

Well, i just bought a dock for my dell streak 7 running Honeystreak. When i try to connect the USB cable into the back of the dock while the tablet is in place my win7 computer doesn't recognize it at all. The tablet doesn't even show its connected! can someone help please!!?
Are you getting any error message ?
Look in your printer and devices folder, you should see it show up as a media device.
I looked and i didn't see anything... I know the dock has to work because the charging (from charging port not UBS port) and hdmi work.

Keep in mind, the charging usb port is SEPERATE from the data usb port. I use this dock and I just charge off it, if I want to use data, I use a 2nd cable connecting to it.
I think I tried that. I connect the dock (VIA charging port) then I connect the data cable(VIA mini usb) to the computer. It should charge and connect to the computer but it still doesn't recognize anything. Could it be the rom?

Well to confirm, can you use a normal cable to connect to your PC? Without the dock that is.
Also as for the rom, Ive used djsteve 2.2.2 and honeystreak, dock works in both. I know on WinXP however I needed to use a diff driver for the MTP Device.
Unfortunately my normal cord died and i coudnt find an original replacement so i got a dock instead. The original cord used to work without trouble though.

Got a PSP USB cord to plug in? Or try the PS3 controller plug. =p All those could work to test with on the dock.
Alright so i bought a usb powered hub, a usb OTG cable, and a usb DAC. I can get the usb DAC working fine by hooking everything up but i cannot get the Nook to charge while in USB host mode. Is this a problem with the settings on the Nook or the USB hub i bought? Also is there any way to charge the nook at 2A while in USB host? I assume this would require a custom cable but i have found very limited information on the internet.

I could be wrong or downright delusional, but I didn't think you could (or worse yet, could cause damage if you tried).

Hello,
I have a USB OTG cable and dell keyboard that I have tested and work in OTG mode on a Nexus 7, however i cannot get them to function with my HP Touchpad 32gb, running CM9 2.6.35, built on Sun Oct 28.
The device recognizes when I plug in anything via USB, but only as a generic Linux USB hub, and not as any particular device. Are there any steps to take to debug this? Has anyone had experience with this type of an issue?
Thanks for your help,
Cory
I don't know if this is the issue, but I know the touchpad doesn't support OTG like the the Nexus does. I think you need a Y-adapter + OTG to provide power since the micro usb port doesn't give any power to the device you connect. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
Apparently even a powered USB requires a powered Y cable to be properly recognized. I hacked together a quick Y cable manually, by splicing in another USB cable's power and ground (Red and black) to the respective locations on a female USB cable. Works as expected.
I am now communicating with an Arduino over Serial
Thanks!
Read this thread, should give you all the info you need:

Basically the Touchpad has OTG but it provides no power.

Agreed. I think people just are not stating reality regarding the ability to charge and use OTG Hosting to USB devices at the same time.
My goal here has been to attach a flash drive with video/audio media and play & charge on long flights. It looks like play, charge are mutually exclusive on my beloved TouchPad.
I've asked for the specific confirmation of this from this YouTube but have never had the poster reply:

There are devices out there that have very advanced micro USB device implementations. Sadly the HP is only superficially supportive.
I for one cannot wait to get my SGN2 smart dock which offers:
Charging
OTG (x3 USB)
Audio out
HML HDMI out
Docked Profile
greetings,
i did a lot of googling around, but only found more and more confusion. i understand that the xperia t has a microusb port that can be used for charging, connect usb devices with an otg cable (tested), and connect an external monitor/tv with an mhl adapter (haven't tested yet).
i've also come across a dock (sony calls it the 'tv dock') which is supposed to charge provide charging *and* allow a monitor to be connected - some say it has a usb port for connecting accessories, but according to the pictures and videos i've seen, it's clearly only meant for charging.
so.. since most people here are a lot more knowledgeable than me, my question is:
is there any accessory/cable/hack that allows me to connect an external monitor, a keyboard, *and* charge the phone at the same time?
thanks,
bamdad
p.s. this is my first post, so hi xda folks.. ^^
On Xperia Arc S, this is possible, because he have Hdmi port and micro USB port for charge.
Here in Xperia T, we have only one port, micro USB. I use mhl to Hdmi cable with USB cable to charge and make possible to see picture on TV for example, and I use Bluetooth keyboard with touchpad like mouse.
For me, this is all that I want, to make this feature to work.
Edit: Another possibility is to use screen mirroring function from phone with HDMI mirroring dongle to TV.

meh, too bad. i'm not really a fan of bt keyboards, because most of them run on batteries. i read somewhere that in *some* phones it's possible to get both usb and hdmi on the same connector (iirc it has something to do with it having more pins).
what do you mean by that 'mirroring function'?
Yes, the USB and Hdmi are posible on one cable. I have this one:

Edit: for mirroring like this for example :
HDMI CHROMECAST Dlna stream.

This is for free micro USB on the phone to charge it and plug your keyboard and mouse, with USB-Otg cable to the phone with USB hub or dock Dk10 for examples.

i've been using chainfire's app to do some timelapses, and it's pretty awesome.
But is there a way i can charge the nexus 7, at the same time as i have it connected to the DSLR?
Like is there a cable or something?
-Skandix
I took a look at the app you're using and it appears you use a USB OTG in order to connect the camera to your Nexus. There is in fact a variation of the OTG which is an OTG y or OTG power adapter which as a leg for power and a leg for data. Here is the first result on Amazon so you can see what I'm talking about:
http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Nexus-Galaxy/dp/B00CXAC1ZW
The only thing is that you need a Kernel which supports USB host while charging. Once you've got that and the cable, you should be able to continuously connect to the camera while maintaining full charge on your Nexus.
