Hello,
about half year ago, my GPS receiver stopped working. It simply cannot find any sattelites (tested with GPS status). At best case scenario it finds 3 (usually 1), but locks to none of them. I have already installed faster fix, but it didn't make any difference.
Problem already persisted on Darkyrom (2.3.3) and situation is about the same now od Mackay ROM.
Any ideas how to fix it?
Bump
Use "GPS Aids" or "GPS Test Plus" :good:

No it's not a hardware issue . He has to update the A-GPS data
last year I opened my phone's case to clean up the gps antenna contacts. unfortunately didn't go well and i screwed the Bluetooth/WiFi module :crying: .
Same problem here, with Cyanogenmod 10.1.
krneki10 : could you try app Z-DeviceTest (on playstore) ?
In the GPS section, you can find lines begin with has_ephemeris and has_almanac.
Check if these lines have some "true" or if it's all "false".
A GPS that works properly should have "true".
Mine have all false and it works very bad.
I can't find any solution until now, but I think the problem is A-GPS (so not hardware)
Well its quite common failure for i9000 about GPS.
juz bear with it or try this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697217
compacity, do you have ephemeris/almanac in Z-devicetest ?
Does your GPS work properly ?
nope, i dump my gps usage as samsung really is idiot for developing something useless as this i9000 gps comparing their big companies so sorry for helpless info

Hi,
I got a Samsung Galaxy S here in Australia, rooted it and upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 I know that GPS worked just fine with 2.1, I was able to walk home and see my position updating very nicely on Google maps
Since updating to 2.2, GPS hasn't worked at all. When I turn it on, and start an application that uses GPS (Navigation, Maps, etc), the GPS icon sits there and flashes back and forth between those two types of icons and I don't get anything on the maps which shows me where I am. I haven't chased this up since upgrading, but it's starting to bug me now
After searching these forums for 'gps not working', I've pulled down the 'GPS test' application and I don't know for sure, but it appears to find one satellite:
PRN SNR Elev Azim Flags
2 11.0 74.0 150.0
But the GPS icon just sits there flashing back and forth.
I may have missed something since upgrading, do I need to do something to the phone to get my GPS working again?
Thanks!
OK, I seem to have fixed the problem I turned on "Use wireless networks" and voila! I now have successful GPS lock and position in my maps
I would have thought that you could use GPS without having "Use wireless networks" turned on!?

Wouldn't call it a successful GPS lock. Since you got it with the mobile networks. (in my case when I use it . the accuracy in my village is about 1000-1500m since the BTS is that much far from me )
So if you get into an area with weak mobile networks, wont help you much .
Wouldnt call this as resolved with "BAD GPS" cuz your GPS still sucks as before (and doesnt work , you just found a workaround that was there also before , 2.2.1 has even some other function for GPS that tries to fix it (or help?) )
But since you can use it now, its ok I guess . OH and there are kinda almost no real fixes for this. Most of SGS GPS suck . There is GPS aids, shutting down wifi, GPS status app, changing the something according to your country.
Ok!
I got the same problem as the user from the post.
GPS worked like a charm on my Galaxy S (NDrive or Google) running 2.1.
I updated it to Froyo 2.2.1 JS7 and since then it doesn`t work anymore.
I can't get a fix.
I did the GPS position test and It locks on 8 satelites. Why the F%CK it doesn`t work anymore?
I am almost going back to Eclair.
Any sugestions?
TY!
So you get a lock when doing the GPS test, but no luck in any other applications? I couldn't get a lock at all until I turned on my wireless as well as the GPS, then it worked for GPS test as well as applications...
I get a lock on 8 satelites on the Location Test with and without "Use Wireless connections".
BUT
I can't get a lock when I am using Google maps, with or without "Use Wireless connections".
I bought the AIDS GPS app on Market, but it did't work neither.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
I updated to Gingerbread (2.3.3) and my problem was solved. Hope it helps somebody!

I also installed GPS Aids and paid for it.
This program does automatic changes to your GPS settings.
Maybe it works for you.
Anyone else having problems using the GPS on this device? I've tried several different GPS apps and none are working. The problem is that is finds 2-3 satellites, but never gets locked.

1 - Download "GPS Status & Toolbox" (EclipSim) from market
2 - Enable Location from Settings in order to use A-GPS data.
3 - Enable Use GPS from Settings
4 - Run "GPS Status & Toolbox" and then go to "GPS Status & Toolbox" menu where you can clear A-GPS and then download newest A-GPS data.
If you can't get a fix after this, you might have faulty SW or HW
You could also try "GpsFix" from the Market.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
Thanks I'll give them a try.
I've now also tried to pair this phone with my holux m 1000 (bluetooth), but can't even get that to work. I managed to pair them, but it won't connect to the phone.
Is it just mine or is this phone so useless?
i am having the same problem too
Hi,
I'm using Sygic Mobile Maps 10 8.2 and Google Maps (unlocked with navigation). Both work fine with GPS and fix is within 5 sec.
Yet to try my stereo Bluetooth headset, will try in a sec ...
Edit: Headset at work, will try tomorrow...
This phone is very good for gps navigation.
Google Maps Navigation, Sygic Mobile Maps 10, Copilot Live, Navigon and Igomyway are working fine. They give me a lock within a few seconds.
A few tips:
Under Settings - Location and Security:
- enable using wireless networks
- enable GPS-satellites
If you're using WiFi the fix will be faster then without.
Oh yes, and one more thing: don't forget to insert your SIM-card.
For me to get gps fix, i need to stand outdoor without any roof on top of me, this is so bad if I'm indoor and beside a window, i can see a few satellites but it just wont lock on.
Is this software problem? I don't wish that it is my hardware problem

Fixed it!
I called LG, and got the recipe for fixing the gps.
Do a "hard factory reset"
Turn off phone
hold HOME and VOLUME DOWN and POWER until you see the android. Then wait.
Done. It now sees 10 satelittes indoors, and uses them all, as opposed to maybe seeing one, and never using any.

LG made a booboo.
There is no gps.conf in /system/etc, so there is no assistance. I pushed the file from a Nexus One (attached) into place and that sorts it.

erm.. sorry... a newbie here... what do u precisely do with this file?
thx
I tried to use gps.conf and supl method but no luck, the issue weren't there. My gps was a jerk, last week i spent 30minutes to fix the satellite while driving in town. Even standing under the sky, the fastest I am able to fix is 200seconds, not to mention there are many times they wont even fix.
But my problem was stopped once i changed from stock to other rom. so I guess there is something else wrong in the stock rom, as the other roms are able to perform well even without gps.conf. (around 20-30 sec fix time).
So I guess only when your gps is able to lock satellite, gps.conf will help to speed it up. At least that's what happen to me
okay a lot of people come here and say there GPS won't work but don't say what they have done about it. I hope I will get some answer(s) if I explain the steps I have already tried.
1) I rooted my phone with z4root
2) Did everything that is explained here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842694
3) Installed GPS Aids :
in GPS Aids' Setup I get a green light on everything but a blue light for root rights. is that a bad thing? I mean I have superuser installed and GPS Aids got permissions in superuser.
Anyways GPS Aids doesn't really do the trick. It's inaccurate by 15 meters (more or less).
4) Installed "GpsFix" and it WORKS!
GpsFix is amazing. It does indeed fix the GPS. I have tried it at home and I live in house#1 and it even locates me at house#1. I am amazed how accurate my GPS CAN be. Now if I click on the location icon in GPS fix it brings me to google maps and shows my exact location but just when I am in google maps for a few seconds google maps seems to "auto correct" the location and JUMPS right at the wrong spot again google maps ALWAYS gives me which is like 60 metres away from where I actually am. So GpsFix fixes the location but google maps ****s it up again.
So those are basically the things I have tried (and some youtube videos which don't work either) and nothing really works.
What can I do? Just admit the fact that the Galaxy S i9000 is a piece of **** and people who rate it VERY GOOD are a bunch of morons who don't know how to test a device or am I actually doing something wrong and it could be a pretty lovely phone?
In case this is important: I am located in Germany and my provider is Vodafone.
Thanks a million if ANYBODY can offer some solution (or let me know that I should have better gotten a HTC).
What can I do? Just admit the fact that the Galaxy S i9000 is a piece of **** and people who rate it VERY GOOD are a bunch of morons who don't know how to test a device
Their could be a third answer in that some phones have a definite hardware problem or GPS software problem rather than all phones .

oh yeh right i forgot to say I bought my phone September 2010. I have read the hardware got improved in October 2010- is this true?
I have contacted Samsung and they suggest: Do a factory reset.
i think that is the worst advice ever and i don't even think that will fix the problem. its just like telling people to format their hard drive if their computer got a bug.

GpsFix gets my exact location. I turn on "GpsFix" and it shows the street name and address in text and it finds my exact location. then i click on a location button which will lunch google maps and it shows the exact location for a few seconds until google maps seems to auto correct and jumps back at the wrong spot like nothing ever happened.
Trying to find out what exactly GPS fix is or does .
From your last post it seems something like other GPS tools .
I will have a look and try and work it out .

I just can't find any satelites, in the gps aid app when i press the GPS doctor it's telling me that the gps status is off.. is there anything that I didn't try and could work?
Please, I'm Desprit..
I Tried and the problem is at every rom
I'm Right now using ICS RC3.1 By onecosmic..

and a wipe cache
I though onecosmic's RC 3.X was only for the i9000 and not i9001.
Well I Tried and looked at the gps status, I didn't really get what am i sepoused to do there, I reset and cleared all gps data and downloaded it after wards..
the app didn't show any errors ..
Try to get GPS Aids from market. Had the same problem and that fixed my gps
Tried the gps aids too... Ain't working.. anything else?...
When I tried the gps doctor at gps aids, it showed me that the gps mode status is not working (the cube near it is red) and after trying the setup and the fix everything possibility it still ain't working... any idea?

Try to download the GPS test and install it, then go to settings and select clear agps, then update agps.
Oh and dont try the gps inside your house! Try it in the middle of the street! Gps signal is always reeeally weak or undetectable inside a house.
Unhappy to say, still didn't work!
Can you post the exact ROM and kernel version you are using?
Also try the following. Disable wifi, reboot phone, try GPS test.
I had GPS problems a while ago and the workaround was to boot the phone with wifi disabled. Something todo with init scripts messing up GPS/BT.
When in Google maps do you get the GPS icon in the status bar when trying to GPS fix?
try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STlb...xt=C3c039cbUDOEgsToPDskJOGd0pTyqyB6SPWL6OcwDB
Better to just send it back to samsung for them to fix if it's under warranty. If not, just sell it and get another one. I really like my SGS but i've given up hope for gps. I've just accepted it doesn't work and be happy the phone's great in everything else (like sound). Was kind of gutted having paid so much for a phone with a non-working gps but to be honest i have little need for a gps so when i need one i just use a dedicated one.
Now I'm using RC4.2 ICS By Onecosmic, Gps Still aint working well, I do get the gps icon... but still, my location ain't really accurate and I cant navigate or anything..
I tried the video that have been posted, None improvment...
Is there any thing else?..
The GPS issue with the i9000 is a mystery to me. I've tried software and hardware fixes to no avail with GB based ROMs. However, when I switched to Slim's ICS ROM my device started to register satelites again with the GPS test app from the market. Despite this when I open the maps app it takes forever to get a fix, so long infact that I give up long before it ever does
Same issue AOKP Milestone 4 ICS. Nothing on GPS Status.
I use market app GPS aid.

Hi there,
I'm not allowed to post in the proper ROM-Threat, hence my question in this threat:
I flashed VorteX 1.2 on Monday and now have a real problem with GPS. No matter what I do, I don't get any GPS-Satellite on my position.
At first I tried the GPS w/o any app, didn't get a fix on any satelite.
Then changed to FasterFix (preinstalled), didn't work either.
Deinstalled the app, installed FasterGPS and tried that.
Still don't get any fix.
I try finding satelites with GPS Test now, but still I don't get any signal.
I am using both, GPS Satelite positioning and allow finding my destination via network connections, except wlan (which I do not intent on using).
Do you have any suggestions what I can do?
Thanks for your time,
greetz, gogo
Hello. Maybe the problem is hardware.
Check this out. It solved my GPS problems.

Also my I9000
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697217&page=38
Hope this helps
That would be really bad. I do hope, it is software-based, since I am not keen on soldering and doing other stuff, which results in permanent changes to the hardware. Still, I do not remember, whether or not GPS did work on the stock-gingerbread-rom; don't even remember, whether or not i tested it.
What I did find in the meantime is this threat dealing with an AGPS fix. It seems not to be a good idea with my device, though (I think, I don't have the i9000 4G; how can i found out, to be sure?)
Well, what do you know...
I did try the fix you suggested, zcata2008, but only the one bending the contact a bit so that the contact to the gps antenna will be stronger.
Seemed to work; i now have a quick 6-satelite fix, which seems to be quite a goof result in my area and from within the house..
thanks a lot!
