Howdy folks, hoping someone on here can help me out.
Very happy in general with my HTC One, but in transferring my contacts from my HTC Desire HD and linking up to various social media accounts, my contacts list has gone a bit insane, were I have a lot of duplicate entries and in some cases my contacts have inexplicably been given their last name twice. I've gone through google.com/contacts to get rid of the extra last names and delete any untidy data, but it doesn't seem to be syncing back to my phone to fix it.
I've got LinkedIn for HTC Sense, Facebook, Google and Google+ contacts viewable at the moment.
Wondering if there is a way to completely erase my phonebook without doing a factory reset on my phone? I've got it set up how I like it and would rather not have the hassle of wiping it completely. Plus, I have a nasty hunch that HTC's backup would just restore everything I don't want anyway...
have you tried the merge duplicate and link all options? for me it suggested to link all my google+, google contacts, whatsapp and skype contacts together based on the firstname and lastnames

Yeah, it got to the point where it wasn't linking everything so I started linking them manually to force it all out of the way. Worked for a time but it seems to keep happening. I have had one friend split into four entries now - two of which are apparently Google+ profiles. Sure enough I look it up and on my Google contacts I delete both the incorrect entries, but it just doesn't sync to my phone. And because they're linked Google contacts I can't even delete them manually! Very frustrating.

I have all sorts of weird bugs right now (been using BakedGoods 1.1) with my nexus: phone freezes up sometimes when i'm trying to answer a phone call, phone freezes up when trying to reboot/power off, text labels are misaligned sometimes...
So I've decided to flash to the cyanogen's latest ROM... but after flashing without wiping - I get infinite error popups of "process com.android.launcher2 has stopped unexpectedly", I can barely even power off the phone...
When I wipe the phone and then flash - everything seems to be alright... so I guess that's the only option left.
I've installed MyBackup and Titanium Backup - and backed up everything on my phone, but the only thing I couldnt backup was hundreds of links between contacts stored on google and facebook contacts (it took me FOREVER to link those, since my google contacts are saved in Hebrew, while the facebook contact names are in English...)
I really don't want to link the contacts one by one all over again... So my question is: is it possible to backup/restore the links between contacts?
Thanks in advance!
My question has ended up being on the bottom of Page 3, without any reply :/
I cant update my nexus without solving this issue, and I'm stuck with a buggy phone right now that freezes every now and then...
Please help, if you can :'(
Thanks...
I had the same problem but only with my gmail contacts + sim contacts, so after the second lost of "joins" I decided to do it the proper way.
Contacts were synced with my gmail accoutn and then in the gmail web I used the contacts manager to fix all the accounts for once (at least until I get a lot of new contacts), now everything is oganized in my gmail contacts and my N1 just fetches them, if I add a new contact in the N1 it will also end up in the gmail account and to make it better I used an app to sync all my contact's pictures with those on FB.
Good luck!
neoranga: thank you for your reply
I have a whole different scenario with my phone...
My contacts are already saved on my google account, but since many of my contacts have a Facebook account, I like them synced, so I can see their profile when I view a contact, and their profile picture on the phone is always in sync with their FB profile picture.
Since my contacts are saved in Hebrew, and the FB account names are in english, the phone cant 'Auto-match' them together... So I had to manually link each and every contact with its correct FB profile...
It took me so long to link them all together ( I have hundreds of contacts) and I'd **hate** to do it again, without even knowing if it'll be the last time of doing it...
There must be a way to backup these links too bad it cant sync with the google account...
Anyone else have faced this problem and got an idea of how to solve it?
OK.. so i come across a second hero that i want to keep stock... I was going thru it and adding things when i tried to sync facebook i noticed the contacts did not sync... the updates work and what not.. and my contact card was updated.. but contacts appear in contact list.. Any help would be appreciated..
EDIT..before i get flamed i have searched XDA. havent really found a solid answer or anything that worked
If I remember the stock people app correctly you'll need to click link inside of any contact that you want to link to facebook.
I know i can do it that way...but at one point in time it would import my contacts from facebook to my contacts on the phone... i would have their emails, phone numbers, etc.. just by syncing facebook... i have heard s few people say this will not work with 2.1 bc something is wrong with facebook and the phone communicating... still trying to figure this out
thats the only way I know how to do it,on cupcake it was automatic as long as you set up the contact to sync when you put it in your contact list originally. I think they took a step backwards in that aspect when the did the update.
almost makes me want to downgrade..lol...i really miss that feature...
The Facebook contact sync should work just fine. They didn't remove that feature in 2.1.
Try deleting the cache and data in your Contacts, People, and Facebook apps. Go into Settings-->Applications-->Manage applications and then scroll down and find Contacts Storage. Open it and Delete cache and data. Then do the same in People and any Facebook ones too.
!!!Warning -- This will delete all the contacts from your phone, so make sure they are all linked to Google before you do this!!!
Afterward, it will take a few minutes for all the contacts to be re-synced/re-added back to your phone, but this may fix the issues you're having and get your Facebook ones in there now.
Hi,
If I add an entry on my HD7 it doesn't appear in my Google calendar. I manually sync as well as use the timed function but entries still won't go from the phone to Google calendar.
Whereas if I delete an entry on my phone, it gets deleted immediately from my Google calendar.
Has anyone got an idea how to get entries entered on the phone to appear in Google calendar?
Note: Windows Live is a dead loss with both contacts and calendar so Google might be my last chance of syncing Outlook & phone.
Cheers...

Are you using multiple calendars? WP7 doesn't support multiple google calendars, maybe its something to do with that?

Does that mean you can add, edit and delete entries without problems with your Windows Phone to Google Calendar?
I have been doing that since day one and so far it has always worked like a charm.
Check your settings going to Settings\email & accounts\Google and make sure you are synchronizing the Calendar.
What I really find odd is the fact that the entries are deleted but not added...
Anyway, I add and delete things to the calendar in my HTC HD7 and they reflect to Google as soon as I sync and vice versa. It works!
As a foonote, MS calendar also works flawlessly.

Thanks for you post... whilst I find MS Calendar works fine (if starting from scratch), it's the fact that existing entries in Outlook wont's sync. I've found that custom categories, complex repeat reminder and attached pictures do not sync correctly. As with MS Contacts, the photos attached to each contact doesn't sync. Where as with Google Contacts and Calendar do.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way a fan of Google, I want to have my phone sync with my PC like I have for the past umpteen years; I don't want my private data uploaded 'somewhere in the cloud' possibly in another country with different privacy laws and complete strangers having access to it. As my MS Calendar has crashed completely now after trying to import from Google Calendar, the reliability is far from what they can expect people to use as a 'standard'.
I'll try creating a gash Google calendar from scratch and see if that can have entries added from my phone.
Thanks again...

It seems that my new google mail account works fine with outlook being sync'd using companionlink 4. The only reason I can think my older gmail account didn't work correctly is that I tried to link it to my ms live account. The ms live account is still dead and I see no way of getting it going, but my phone is now registered under it and apps downloaded against it... hence I'm stuck with it. Major screw-up by Microsoft imho... let's hope they do the right thing with the next update.
Alternatively... HTC provide their own FREE outlook sync'ing software for Android... why not Windows Phone?
Ok I've done some digging and can't seem to find anything with my exact problem.
Yes I have looked up duplicated read only contacts BUT everyone seems to have this issue with contacts synced from another app. Mine is no.
Got this baby this past Sunday (found out that I can upgrade 7 days early so of course I did it. Love the phone and think I will be okay without root. Got Helium backup to backup my data. Only thing left is for them to add a Restart in the power menu then I'll be fine with no Root. OH and they need to get Lolipop out ASAP)
But ever since then I've been having this issue. I've been having new contacts made, same name as a contact I have, but with not info (most of the time. Sometimes it has their number in it). Now here is where it gets weird.
They are Google contacts that it says are saved under my Gmail. I go to Gmail, No duplicated contacts there, I try to delete, says they are read only and can only hide, AND it seems like the contacts that are getting duplicated are contacts that I seem to call most often. I have all other apps and their contact sync turned off so I know it's not an issue with them, and since they are saved under Gmail and when I turn off the local Phone contacts they are still there so I know they are not local saved/SIM contacts.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I felt like I had this issue loooooong ago with another phone but pretty sure it was back when Facebook synced its contacts and I had to link them.
I'm a savvy guy and know my way around Android.
Thanks
Ok well i ended up getting it myself.
For people with this issue:
Turn off google contact sync. Then go to apps in settings and then look for the contact storage app. Force stoo the act and clean all data. Check contacts to make sure its empty. Then enable google contacts sync.

Contacts in Android are stored in a database, and as they come from multiple sources (synced from Google, Facebook, Whatsapp, LinkedIn and copied from SIM or stored as "local phone" contacts...) it's easy to have multiple instances of same contact with different info or even duplicates. Contacts app let you "join" multiple contacts from different sources so they will appear joined in your contacts list, but they will still be stored inidividually in the database.
Anyway, there are multiple apps that let you manage your contacts at a deeper database level. With MiniContacts https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brapeba.minicontacts you can see all raw contacts one by one showing its original account source (group). And you can delete all contacts from a source (i.e. those coming from LinkedIn, or Facebook) or choosing manually those you don't want. Notice that if you don't disable the syncronization with the source those deleted contacts will reappear again. So, first disable syncronization! If you want to delete the contacts permanently from everywhere instead of just from your Android database, go to the source (LinkedIn, Facebook...) and delete them there.
Hope it helps...

I could kiss you right now. I have been scouring the internet and downloading apps for hours trying to figure out how to fix "read only" and "can't be deleted" contacts on my second replacement dud Turbo 2. Duplicates galore, and they wouldn't go away. Thank you, thank you, thank you! No more Verizon Cloud - that really messed it up both times. Merry Christmas! :good:

The app Simpler Contacts can merge duplicate apps. I've used it on friends' phones to do that.
Of course, Simpler Contacts also would like you to keep using their app and even their backup service, and they have a Dialer app too. But you don't need all that. I just use Simpler Contacts once in a while to check for duplicate contacts.
But this solution above is good too.
I also used Simpler Contacts to export all contacts from a "local" account. Helped to friends do this when they switched from iPhone to Android and the carrier store exported all their iPhone apps to "local" phone account -- which is STUPID. All the contacts need to synced with Google.
Recently picked up the Note 9. Ive noticed in my contacts I have several google accounts called Started in Android. I have 5 or 6 of them. I dont have any contacts starred. Anyone else notice this on any of their other phones or know a fix? Its driving me nuts. Ive looked through contacts, calendars, gmail, and duo to find where these potential groups are and cannot find any trace of them so not sure how they got there. Was able to remove my google account for the play store and confirmed the numerous starred in android contacts groups were removed. Readded the account and they were added back.
Anyone else have this on the Note 9 as well?
EDIT: Screenshot attached

My suggestion was based on your comment. Everything you mentioned that you have done could've been done from your phone. I have noticed in some of my situations that some things only cleared up when I did it from a computer. I just wasn't sure you had tried that. The only other thing I can think of is that you have multiple accounts selected to show contacts that are duplicating things

I do have multiple accounts selected to show like the screenshot you provided, but only sync contacts from my Google account under the account settings. Removing the google account specifically removes all the contacts and Starred in Android groups so there isnt anything on the local phone. I can also replicate the issue by going into Google contacts on a PC, removing all contacts, syncing the phone, everything disappears including the duplicate groups. Recreating a single contact adds 5 more Starred in Android groups that are irremovable.

I am out of suggestions then. If you find a solution please be sure to post it. This will surely be an issue as more people get the Note 9.
I found this thread with the same issue:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/gmail/w1ew71ab0Lw/tqDPM7t2AgAJ
Looks like Google is aware of it, started working on it, and ultimately dropped it.
