If the phone is running stock rom and recovery, does a hard reset return the phone and the system folder to their unroot state?
What?
Stock ≠ root.

Hard reset doesnt get the phone back to unrooted state.
so to unroot I have to flash the original rom?
Once you unlock your boot loader your phone is unlocked forever. If yet load stock ROM that does not have root then of course you won't have root access. But you just load back a ROM with root access and you have super user again. Root just depends on what ROM you are running.
I think there's something I misunderstood, so correct me if I am wrong. Isn't there a recovery partition where the original ROM is stored so that if you factory reset, the phone will be restored to whatever the original ROM is? If I root my phone and keep the stock unrooted ROM, wouldn't factory reset return my phone to the unrooted state?

As long as you haven't changed the recovery, this should be true. The phone should be unrooted when you recover it, but the bootloader will still be unlocked.
Thanks for the clarification. I understand the unlocked bootloader part. BTW, I think I read somewhere that you can root the phone without unlocking the bootloader.

not really. if you load cyanogen ROM on your phone, then you do a factory reset, i believe it just loads the cyanogen ROM fresh. you would have to flash a stock ROM to go back to factory.

There is no recovery partition, and there is no "original ROM". There is System partition and Data partition, System being read-only for non-root users, and Data being R/W (but some folders invisible in file managers). System is what contains the "ROM" as you know it.
SU and Superuser.apk get installed into System.
Factory reset wipes Data and Cache. It doesn't touch System.
So, if you sum it up - you get that even if you do a factory reset, you won't get unrooted.
Thanks. It makes sense now.
Hmmm yeah it looks like I misunderstood that, then. Sorry.
Better idea! someone try it and find out.. and there are now ways to root n1 without unlocking bootloader.. as i would think it would actually do unroot if you do a factory reset from a stock recovery.. am i willing to try... NOooo...
But from previous post ahead it does make more sense.. that it wouldnt.. but still good idea to give it a try

I've done this and it worked well. Running the latest CM6 nightly.
Not too sure about unrooting - i did have an issue (caused by me i'd say), and i downloaded EPE7x stock room, renamed it to PASSIMG, and the bootloader recovered it for me, and i was back to stock.
Not sure if it was the correct way, but it worked... As opposed to when i tried to flash the recovery, boot, etc, i received an error about verification failure.

Yea... We are talking bout being on Stock Everything, but having ROOT, you have full mod from recovery to ROM(having CM6)
questioin was if have fully stock FRF91 with only root, if going to recovery and doing a factory reset/wipe would it take off root, at least thats what i read or remeber reading if this is the right thread
So can someone tell me how to get back to stock from rooting? I believe I used french Toast.

I want breakfast now.. But by no means at all not trying to sound like a **** head here, but there is a thread in the Dev section on how to get back to stock .. its one of the stickies in the dev section.. or i think it is
Not sure if this has already been posted somewhere, but after my experience I figured it might be useful to someone. If it's been posted already ignore this and move on with your day/night
1. flash sbf
2. phone will go in the boot loop of death, thats fine lol.. when rsdlite says 100 percent pull the battery
3. put the battery back in, hold down the home button plus the power button till you see the moto logo followed by the triangle
4. hit search button, your now in recovery
5. do a factory restore
6. once complete reboot phone
7. thank god and swear you wont flash your phone ever again (ofcourse only to do it in a day or so after you have calmed down)
rsdlite and sbf can be found in this thread CLICK
If you made a nandroid backup of 2.1 couldn't you just restore that? I'm pretty sure you can. I remember doing it with the Moto Droid.

Do not restore a 2. 1 nandroid in 2. 2. The update changes the bootloader and recovery versions which aren't part of the backup. The phone will just hang at the MOTO logo. I learned this the hard way. You have to use the sbf. You can then apply your nandroid to get everything back.

what i meant by my experience was downgrading 2.2 to 2.1, My g/f has the droid x, and i am the one to root or mod her phone for her. She wanted to try out froyo and liked the rom alot. there are little bugs i noticed
1. odd little animation hiccup when scrolling home screens
2. lag in gallery
3. what seemed like market delay (but the market has been slow lately, same thing on my vibrant and g1)
but this is a test build not a "final rom"
Like i said downgrading the phone is a little different than other android phones Ive used and i thought this post may help someone out. Im the type of person who wont mod something unless i know i can get back to where i started and with this sbf and "how to" you wont have to worry about that.

also i believe it updates the radio and kernel.. thanks pj for explaining that
If I wanted to go to 2.1 ,don't see why...at the moment.
Before I do a SBF would it be ok to to do a data wipe and a partition wipe in recovery mode then do the SBF bootrecovery deal???
Thank You
after you upgrade to 2.2 koush has a new DroidXBootstrap.apk out
go back to his website and DL it and reinstall then rerun bootstrap.
after that rom manager can do backups or recoveries.
sucks you all get bootloop with sbf, ive done it twice now and has worked fine
keeps all my apps and stuff
goodluck

I'm kinda confused what you mean? I did a nandroid backup of 2.1 with the latest bootstrap and clockworld.
I just remember using a nandroid on my girl's moto droid and I went from 2.2 all the way back to 2.0.1.
when trying to sbf on my Mac I get this -bash: ./sbf_flash: Permission denied? Any suggestions I have been asking for 2 days now hopefully someone can help. Thanks

I also did the same from my Eris. The major difference is that the recovery on those devices were completely replaced not just patched. When you restore a 2.1 nandroid from a 2.2 droid x the android 3e recovery is not replaced. When the system tries to boot it sees that as an invalid recovery image and won't boot, it just hangs at the moto logo forever. When you upgarde to 2.2 on a Droid or an Eris your still using clockwork recovery or amon ra's recovery and not upgrading to the android 3e system recovery. Maybe it was just a fluke that it didn't work for me but it makes sense as to why it would fail, otherwise we would be able to have a full custom recovery.

From my understanding sbf_flash is for linux only. To flash on mac you need to use rsd lite with a virtual windows os.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/38671-flashing-sbf-mac.html
i cant get my phone to flash. i have done this 2 before with my droid x on 2.1 but now that i am on 2.2 every time i try to use RSDlite, i connect my phone and select my SBF but the START button will not light up so i cannot proceed. any thoughts.. im running windows 7 64 and i have all the drivers working for my phone.
failed sbf flash
Hey guys, i got an error in RSD that says "Failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. Phone[0000]: Phone is not compatible with muli-interface super-file. (0x703B); phone connected
Any ideas, i'm really new to android stuff, been using WM forever.

Tivo to the rescue! (edit: added numbers to make it easier to specify where to look for users caught in the middle somewhere)
1. You can do one of two things to get back to 5.5.886
You can use RSD Lite to sbf back to stock 886
http://briefmobile.com/droid-bionic-receives-fastboot-recovery-files
Or you can use this One click restore and root to get back to stock 886
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825
Both of these will erase your data (but not your sd card). There's no way around that.
Because you already updated your radio files and theres no way to downgrade that, the one click root method will not work anymore. There's no stopping that, its already been done.
2. Because of P3droid, however, there is a manual method of rooting that still works.
Follow this link
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...-your-phone-back-upgrade-path.html#post106072
Look at the second post. I tested this method after I, myself, went to 893 and SBFed back to 886. It works.
3. After that you can follow this guide starting from step 5 to get keep root through any upgrade.
http://androidforums.com/bionic-all-things-root/434407-how-flash-893-update-maintain-root.html
4. Then download the 886>893 file from here and put it on your SD card
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...found-update-files-read-before-you-flash.html
5. Boot phone into STOCK RECOVERY (not clockwork mod recovery). When the triangle is up, press BOTH volume keys. Use Volume Down to navigate and Volume Up to select the install zip option. Select the 886>893 file you just downloaded and let it install. It will take a while.
Boot back up after that and you should be rooted and be running 5.5.893

Yeah you wont be able to use the current version of any one click root method anymore because you upgraded your kernel and radio and those cant be downgraded.
The only method I know that works after updating kernel/radio is p3droid's manual method.
What if you flash the original full FXZ file using RSD lite, will that put back the original kernal and radios?
No. It is currently impossible to downgrade kernels and radios.
OK, so question, pardon my newbness, coming from a Thunderbolt and bought the Bionic yesterday, I rooted, flashed bionic bootstrap, and made a backup of my stock rom. Then I flashed Blurred 2.0 which is based on .893. If for what ever reason I need to go back stock, can I do so, or am I hosed?
You can always go back to 886 by flashing the system.img file.
If you're talking about doing that while still running that ROM, I don't think you should. I don't kno what would happen.
You will never be able to downgrade your kernel or radio files though (these keep you from using the root method most people know). P3droid's manual method works though.
Wait, so when I want to sell this phone in a few weeks, can somebody post a method to return back to stock, etc?

This is basically just a guide putting everyone else's guides together in one place.
Hi,
I have the non-Taiwan Butterfly S. I unlocked it via HTC Dev, and installed Clockwork Recovery.
This week, the 4.2 update was released for Singapore. It seems to have been in two parts, one which was a minor upgrade (235MB), and after that was applied, I got the option of the larger, 4.3, 700MB, OTA.
Applying the OTA seems to have left me, at boot time, with a blank screen (there is some backlight visible, after the HTC splash). I read tonight that OTA should not be used with custom recoveries, so I have (using fastboot) been able to flash the stock recovery.
I can now go into Fastboot, HBoot, and even Recovery. But I think I may no longer have an actual "system".
How can I flash either a custom ROM, or investigate the situation?
And also, after I see the Recovery screen (the battery icon), what can I do there?
Thanks,

What I would do is get TWRP Recovery (Just a matter of personal preference you can get clockwormod too) do a full wipe, clear the cache, dalvik cache and install a custom ROM hope I helped somehow
Do you still have the OTA zipfile on your device? It should be possible to force the stock recovery to install it, I just don't know how exactly. If you manage to achieve that, it should fix any corrupted files or inconsistent state, unless something went completely wrong.
Also, did the CWM recovery actually succeed to install the smaller OTA? I find that somewhat weird, but then again, I haven't tried to install OTAs using CWM, only TWRP and that did fail early.
If it was a 901S, I'd suggest installing the stock ROM from scratch, but since your phone is 901E (as far as I understand) and my stock ZIPs are for 901S, that's not guaranteed to work. Still, you might try to do that, but make sure to make a backup of the current state first, just in case it only gets worse. If it does work, it's probably going to be the easiest way out.
Another option would be to get someone else with the 901E to post a backup of their /system, I could turn that into a ZIP, which would solve your problem.

Well, to install custom ROMs, you'll have to use either TWRP or CWM, I don't know about a way to do that using stock recovery.
Ok, I did this:
Installed CWM Recovery
Flashed the Stock zip from koniiiik's archive
Rebooted successfully. Lots and lots of force closes, Everything from android.core to ...
Used Rom Manager to restore a backup made a month ago
Rebooted. All OK now
Flashed Stock Recovery (again, thanks koniiiik)
Booted. Checked OTA. Got a small update (1.x)
Applied. Rebooted, Checked OTA again
Got the 4.3 package. Applied.
All is well
Between Step #3 and #4, I got my entire backlog of SMS delivered, which I lost in the next step. But that is a small price to pay.
Thanks to all of you helped,

I say nearly stock, because it was taken after HTC Unlock, Clockwork Recovery was installed, and root flashed

Don't worry about that, of these three, only root affects /system and it should be not too difficult to revert.

Is the split to avoid files greater than 1GB?

Most likely – FAT filesystems, depending on inode size and other factors, only support file sizes up to a certain limit. Sometimes it's 2 GB, sometimes 4 GB, sometimes probably as little as 1 GB.

That would be most helpful. Thanks.
Dropbox is back up, I have sent you a link.
Thanks
I am returning my phone back to stock so I can trade it in. I found a few threads on here that have ways to unroot but some seem questionable. Can anyone point me in the right direction to unroot an official Kit Kat updated device?
Thanks
Assuming you have supersu, uninstall all of your apps that have root access (for safestrap, busybox, etc make sure to uninstall the in-app stuff first), i would reboot here but that may not be necessary...then open up supersu and choose "full unroot". Then factory reset and double check status is official ☺
If you get a custom screen after that try rerooting then full unroot with supersu again
Edit: I stand corrected - flashing NC2 with Odin is easiest
Yeah I have su. So before I do this should I restore my stock rom I have backed up via safestrap? I am currently running dynamic kat 5.0
You can also reinstall factory firmware with Odin, then factory reset.

Awesome, I will give that a try when my upgrade is closer. Thank you

Yea @440bro 's suggestion is way easier since Odin removes all of that! unroot with SuperSU does work but it's a long way around for just returning to stock
please help

]I have similar situation except I have an iMac running OS X Mavericks. Could anyone tell me if it's possible to unroot my AT&T Note 3 to stock ROM to sell? I installed stock custom rom using safestrap but when I reboot or turn device on, I get a safestrap enabled cartoon thing asking to continue or recover. I don't think people will want to buy phone if they saw this sick looking robot thing when they switch it on. Please help...Phone too big for my hands. Thank you

Did you backup stock rom before you flashed the custom rom in safestrap? if yes, reflash your backup in safestrap then the steps in post #2 should work. If no, I'm really not sure how going through that unroot process with SuperSU while still on a custom rom would work out...Odin is much easier and more reliable so if there's any way you can get to a PC you might want to go that route.
Also if you're selling online you might find some people who do want to buy a rooted Note 3...I sold a phone on swappa a few months ago and there were people looking specifically for rooted phones. The 'cartoon thing' is safestrap and is exactly what you want to see when you turn on a rooted AT&T Note 3

Thanks for your feel good message...made my day. I thought I backed up stock rom however being an obviously root virgin...When I went to factory reset, everything was gone except for my ugly cartoony friend. Luckily I am able to read in small doses so I was able to do whatever it was I did to get her running factory...still rooted and unlocked. When you mentioned that people on swappa might be interested in a rooted device WITH my lonely friend at startup? I felt all fuzzy. I will post an ad on swappa later today in your honor my mysterious phoneguardian angel. Thanks again.

Looks like I'll need to go the long route to unroot. I have a Mac book and I can't find Odin for it
