Hi, I bought an unlocked galaxy ace S5830M a few months ago, and I rooted it as well so I can install a new ROM. I've read that I need to back up my EFS folder, but I found out it's empty. Is that normal? Do I need to backup anything at all if the phone came factory unlocked? I've looked for the answers, but couldn't find anything either here or on google that could tell me it was safe to install a new ROM. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

FORGET EFS FOLDER!!! AND DON'T TOUCH IT!! You could ruin your device because managing it could erase you IMEI number so fotget it! you don't need any backup from esf folder! I'ts imposible lose IMEI number using or flashing the correct files and here XDA FORUM all roms/patchs/mod that I've tryed are safe

really thats kinda weird because i flashed 2 roms without having any problems about losing my imei number.
Or maybe i did but i didn't know!
do a search on imei, but i think some people have had their imei restored after flashing stock rom. dont forget to backup efs afterwards, you may have a backup already as some apps back it up (search for efs)
Sent using TCP/IP
If you don't have back up the solution is to flash a stock rom through odin. This should restore everything. I think you can also flash darky resurrection rom but not 100% on that.

How to back up the IMEI http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914
Flashing back to Stock ROM or Darky's 10.2 should restore your IMEI
o seu Inglês não é tão ruim
and have you made a backup of the /efs/ partition after you have lost the imei, there might have been the correct file backed up - now it is a mess probably
so here is the simple guide how to revert the imei [GUIDE] Recover your IMEI in 9 steps.
i think you were missing chown 1001:radio /efs/nv_data.bin
and here gereat tool to backup /efs/ partition
[TOOL] Updated! 13/04/12 - EFS Pro v1.4.7 - Advanced '/efs' Backup and Restore!
pick backup to tar and location pc - worked for me, sometimes app likes to crah but it works. jut check the tar file if all files are there after proces
good luck

be sure to chown when you are # (superuser) after renaming backup nv_data.bin
you might try it when phone in airplane mode.
your imei is most probably in the backup file
just those dumbasses from xda or darky do not know jack about phones and android how is that ll working. flashing rom will not fix your imei

I've already tried to flash darkys or stocks roms, but nothing happens about the IMEI. I think the problem is that the files nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5 are already corrupted files too so i cant restore my Imei and all the times that i try to flash a stock rom i think the files that my SGS restores are the corrupted files: nv_data.bak / nv_data.bak.md5 / nv_data.bin / nv_data.bin.md5
i really dont know what i have to do but i think that the question is not about to recover my imei. i think the question is about restore my imei, but i really dont know what i have to do, i've tried all..

This also happened to me. After trying literaly every method of restoring it i had to send it for repairs. Cost me £50 as my warrant had expired. I had to go to some local repair shop.

Flashing a stock ROM will restore a IMEI if the IMEI has not already been corrupted.
I can say this with 100% confidence as I have been in a similar situation. However I did not play with the nv_data.bin file before flashing a stock ROM.
To the OP.
Do a search of the I9000 (SGS) threads for a post about restoring IMEI to nv_data.bin I am sure that a XDA user has posted that they can restore the IMEI number. This may be the only option before returning the handset to Manafacturer for service
I had this problem. Did you install the "sgs unlock"? This is what caused mine to show a bad imei number. I had to take it back to manufacturer and play dumb!

Hi everyone,
I recently got a i9000 that was on icm via devils kernel. I did a factory reset on the device and think this corrupted the EFS folder as i was given the generic IMEI and had no signal. I flashed back to a stock GB 2.3.5 and managed to get my own IMEI back on the phone. I still however have no signal so wondered what to do next?
Thanks

You'll have to flash back to stock KK4 (without bootloaders) to restore it. Once on stock, make a backup of your efs folder. Get back up to Captivating and if you get the error again, simply replace your efs folder with your backed up one (with the right permissions) and reboot. Should be good from there.
P.S.: There are plenty of little guides explaining how to recovery from IMEI error/lost. Use the search next time
Thanks for answer, is it safe to modify EFS folder? in case of anything goes wrong how can i restore the original state?
P.S.: Is this a general issue regarding 4.2.2 for this device or a rom cooking error?
Thanks in advance!

It's not a general issue, it randomly happens and lucky for you, it's easily fixable.
Yes, it's safe to replace the efs folder. Know that without it, you won't have signal nor data so you don't wanna mess with it. Going back to stock will flash the correct one on your device (which will fix your IMEI problem) and if you get this issue again, you'll have a backup of the correct efs folder.
Great! Thanks again for your answer!

The OP got his phone fixed by the guarantee. I would suggest to flash stock firmware from Google's download pages. Get it back to stock and see if the problem persists.

I had an LG G2 that it happened to. Something must have went wrong during the flash. Just happened. Nothing I did wrong, just happened. Started backing up EFS after that. Backed it up during initial flash of N6, save it to Gdrive. Haven't worried about EFS since.
Can someone with a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 N910T3 that has a TWRP backup INCLUDING the EFS please upload that and give me a link. I screwed up my EFS and if someone with the same phone could please make and upload their TWRP backup (just with EFS box checked very small and not your data) for me it would be greatly appreciated. I know I will have to go into it and edit my serial # from yours, but it should get me back working.
Thanks
Efs backup from another device will never work because it's related to your phone's specific hardware.
You did big mistake that you flash backup and efs from old phone to new one that completely screw up your efs partitions and drk ( device root key ).
Sorry but you should make always efs backup from twrp in microsd card before start messing with phone. Cuz flashing always risky job.
Trust me odin or twrp will not going to help you.
Dont waste your time You should go to repair center cuz they have tools like dongle box to fix efs and imei.
They will write new cert files and restore your efs but i dont think they can fix drk cuz i see many drk damage cases but didn't see any working method unless changing entire motherboard.
