nope not possible unfortunately, the n7 doesn't even have HDMI support.
Would you really want to do this though
The Nexus is a great device for a tablet, but used for a PC screen is totally not gonna work. Its too small.
You can get 15" monitors for hella cheap, I mean hey, I'd give you a 15" monitor if you paid my postage !!

I think most of the replies leading to where to get an lcd and hdmi support is kinda deviating from the op's principle inquiry and purpose.
As far as some constructive help, the only thing that I could think of is possibly taking advantage of the usb host feature and trying to find a way for a form of vga/dvi/display port conversion to usb. Then there is still the issue of whether you could get the tablet to use that in put from the usb host as a full screen display.
Its not a straight how-to or answer, but a good place to start looking for a solution.
Best of luck.
Way too much trouble to go through. Get yourself an IPS monitor, they are cheap now. TN panel monitors are so ridiculously cheap too.
Hi, I want the same thing too. We could simply use remote control apps through WiFi but it would be much of a hassle since we only need a display.
There are even apps that enables using the device as a second monitor.. there must be a solution via WiFi network

If you have a Wi-Fi with the same lAN with your pc than you can go with Splashtop. Just sign in for the first time using a display on your pc and keep start with system on and you are done. Just turn on your pc connect your nexus with the Wi-Fi and connect.you can also use the touch. Last of all its free in the play store.

Depends how cheap the laptop is.. I love my htc flyer tablet more than anything (thanks to the pen) but there's still many things you wont be able to do as easily as a laptop. If you dont have a pc at all i would recommend the laptop. If you decide to go the tablet route just make sure to browse all tablets before deciding.

I use my tablet for university. Far more portable. Absolutely love it. But in saying that, a laptop it even desktop is far more comfortable for long term typing when you get home. I have my tablet (iconia) sync all my documents with drop box so i can access and transfer as soon as I'm home

Well , it's kind if a "take your pick" situation .
A laptop is good because it is a compact (or rather slightly smaller) version of a desktop , so you can have the features of a desktop at your hands .
A tablet is different . It is a even more compact version of the desktop . While it is more portable , the features may be less than what a laptop can do .
However , it does have some "phone-like" features too , so......goodluck !

And IMO offline storage is more useful, especially on a Wifi-only device, but also for anyone else with a limited data plan on their phone or data connection capable tablet. Also, pretty sure a $9 16GB USB stick is more cost effective than pretty much any 16GB cloud storage option.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
There is actually a thread over in the Themes and Apps section that the developer made. He is really open to input. I like the app, as I don't have to root to use a flash drive with videos saved on it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well, isn't that a kick in the teeth, because I just rooted last night simply to use USB OTG. At first I kind of felt "meh" over the read only factor, but then I got to thinking, am I really going to need to transfer from tablet to external media? I'd much rather transfer from external media to tablet, do what I need to do with watching whatever content I may have, then simply delete it off the tablet... no reason to transfer it back when it's the same darn file. Some people may have uses for having a 2 way setup, but I'm sure this will fit the bill for a lot of people. I do find it a considerable bummer that ext* file systems aren't supported, but meh.
Thank you thank you thank you!

i dont understand the bickering of cloud data. it is nice but i have 20 hours of plane flights coming up. cloud data will not be a very good solution for me compared to plugging a hard drive into my tablet.
Being a non-root user, this is great news for me. I always used splashtop to watch my videos directly from my computer, though it gave me no trouble, I would much rather have the movie with me.
Can't wait till the developer puts it back up.
What is the name of the app? Can anyone share the APK?
Downloaded Nexus Media Importer yesterday. It works as needed on my GNex, Nexus 7 and Xoom. No root necessary. Amazing! I'd pay for this app in a heartbeat! Sorry have no place to upload it.
Looks like the developer is now charging for it:

I was really fired up about getting my N7. I got it, rooted it, flashed it, bricked it, fixed it, flashed it, and then loaded it with all of the best games and every emulator… 2 days later I’m now bored and have no use for it no more than my android phone… I might try running a virtual PC but…I’m a little sad I lost interest this quickly. What is everyone else using their tablets for that keeps them from collecting dust?
I use mine all the time for gaming, Web browsing, splash top, wifi remote control, browsing forums, news, entertaining my 2 year old, navigation, banking and managing all my rss download feeds on u torrent, I am sure there is more I do I am not thinking of too
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
If you truly loaded up the tablet with the best games you would still be playing them and wouldn't be bored after 2 days.
u could always get a comic book or ebook reader and read some stuff idk.
I bought mine primarily to replace my older Kindle so I could get books and magazines with photos that the Kindle sucks at. I like playing Angry Birds on it, but do that mostly on my phone. I also fly my AR Drone with it. I didn't buy it to be using it all day.

Almost 5000 posts since April? No wonder you can't find life.
I just keep trying the different emulators now for gaming but i dont spend a lot of time with the tablet in my hand at all
For me it's mostly the form factor. Browsing the web, reading text, etc. is very, very nice on a 7" screen and many games just look better and play better as well. Plus I love the fact that I can install Ubuntu naively on it and basically use it as a laptop replacement if I need to.

I use mine for the same reasons others have posted here, but I also have been tinkering with integrating my nexus into my (rather crude) home automation system driven by arduino. With an arduino, tasker, a bit of tinkering and programming, I'm able to open/close my garage door and control my lights with tasker using voice commands or tasker widgets on my home screen.
I have been an iPhone and ipad guy since they came out years ago and recently switched all of my devices over to nexus ones and can't be happier with the openness. When I do get a bit bored with it, I try to come up with an idea to use my nexus to make my life easier and hopefully learn something new along the way.
Good luck with your quest. And by the way, if any one is interested, I can probably throw up a tutorial describing how I achieved this.

As far as I'm concerned my phone is for when I leave the house, while my tablet is for everything else. If you're bored, then it's not the fault of the device, it just means that you don't have enough interesting content on it.

I have a nexus 7, it has a good purpose.
My computers purpose is to run high end software such as 3ds max and the adobe design suite, as well as a bunch of games.
My laptops purpose is to sit in my room until i buy it a new power cord, then its purpose is to be sold, or something...
My phones purpose is to text and call people, and when i dont have my tablet on me its so i can play games and sketch.
My tablets purpose is so i can browse the web, read books, play games i dont on the computer, and to be a digital sketchpad until i can afford a medium intuos 5.
Bored with your tablet? Find a purpose for it such as netflix, reading books, sketching, incessantly flashing software until you break it, etc.

Hey guys, according to this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050380, given the right kernel and hardware setup, you can have a USB hub, mouse, keyboard, and a memory stick all powered off a charger that is also powering the Nexus tablet.
If this is true, then I am going to start working on a TRUE dock, one that would turn the Nexus 7 into a sort of PC.
See the attached image for a rough outline of how things would be setup.
For the body of the dock, I will 3d print it. I'm pretty good at 3d printing, my previous project (Andraxis, a cellphone mount for PS3 controllers) was probably much more difficult than this would be. Like that project, this will be open development where anybody can suggest changes, and eventually buy their own.
So here is what I need from you guys: Suggestions for USB hubs. I need something that is so readily available anybody could buy it, cheap enough they won't mind paying for it on top of what will likely end up being $40+ worth of a 3d printed case and USB cables, and of course, super small.
Let's make this happen guys!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
this is great. I might model my own dock, and create a prototype with a 3D printer.
Just use Bluetooth mouse and keyboard? I assume you can use them both at the same time?
