[Q] Why clear Dalvik and cache?

So every single rom for any phone I've seen says to clear the dalvik and the cache (or maybe its just the "dalvik cache") but when I went from stock to Thriller, I forgot to, and nothing went wrong. In fact, all my settings and apps were all intact from the previous stock rom.
I've considered that the only other phone I'd done any flashing on was a backflip, without Apps2SD and maybe that's why all my apps and settings were intact, so that still leaves me with the question: why clear it?
This may be a noob-ish question, and I apologize. Thanks for any help!

If there are any compatibility issues between the apk dalvik cache of your previous rom and the apks on the new rom wiping dalvik clears the previous apks stored dalvik cache. In most cases you can flash without a problem. But I recommend wiping between rom flashes just to eliminate any potential problems. Flashing something like Thriller over the stock rom you can probably get away with not wiping anything since all the apks are essentially the same. Flashing kernels you don't need to wipe anything. When flashing a rom with a completely different firmware I recommend a full data wipe. Restoring recovery backups such as nandroid require no wiping at all.
Also, wiping dalvik shouldn't affect any of your settings.

When switching ROM with different base apps, it is generally better to wipe caches than to get stuck in a boot loop, or having your apps and launcher FC on you. You never lose anything as the cache rebuilds itself on the next reboot, except maybe a few minutes

so, when i flashed thriller and followed the instructions, did I do a full wipe or not?
I mean if it doest it on its own, and if not, should I do one?

If you followed the instructions you did a full data wipe. When you do this the dalvik gets wiped as well. To just wipe dalvik look under the Advanced menu in cwm recovery.

clearing cache
i am using a nand rom in my HD2, and i also want to install another rom via SD in Magldr, but because of kernel issues i cannot load the Rom from SD unless i use the kernal i am advised to use. I am instructed to clear the dalvik and cache, but does this mean that i would lose anything from my current NAND rom? I still want to be able to use that of coarse so i just want to make sure there are no major risks when clearing cache.

Clearing dalvik and cache wont make you lose anything, used to do it with my shift because I'd flash about 10 zips a day sometimes...
Also when it comes to flashing any ROM I format system data cache wipe dalvik cache and do a factory reset just to be sure nothing from a previous ROM is left over also wipe my SD ext partition when running an a2sd ROM, my question is can I safely manually format the emmc partition of the thrill from the mounts and storage option of cwm

[Q] Sammobile firmware after System-Preload wipe?

I had my phone stolen the other day, but I got it back (thanks Cerberus). I want to do a complete system wipe (as in deleting current firmware and reinstalling, not just factory reset) as I'm nervous about what they might have done to it, and because it still seems a bit slow, even after a Factory reset, Cache wipe, and dalvik wipe. I have already rooted using method 1.A. from this forum, so I have the "Wipe Data-Cache-System-Preload" option in PhilZ's bootloader (which I'm assuming does what I'm looking for). I would like to use the firmware on the Sammobile website for my country (Chile (ENTEL)), but I have a couple questions I haven't been able to find an answer to.
1. Is what I'm doing safe? Can you use the Sammobile Firmware's after doing a "Wipe Data-Cache-System-Preload"? Will it raise the counter or change the fact that I have a safe kernel currently?
2. Will I lose my current root access and/or PhilZ's bootloader? If so, is this a problem at all? Will I be able to re-root with the same method, or will that mess something up considering that the bootloader had already been modified the first time I rooted?
Sorry for being an overly anxious noob, but I just barely got my phone back, and I don't want to brick it.

Yes, what you are doing is safe. the method for flashing stock rom is also in the above link. it will not raise the counter, you will lose root and would be back to stock kernel and there is no problem in that.
Yes you can flash philz kernel again once you are done flashing stock rom.
Edit: flash .zip file for philz kernel after flashing rom again to avoid raising counter.

Ok thanks! Is this process of re-installing the firmware going to actually delete the old firmware first? As opposed to just write over it? Will it have the same effect as the "Wipe Data-Cache-System-Preload" option in PhilZ kernel?

it is the process of over writting if you do not clear up the data or system or preload (which you already did and if the rom is non wipe rom). As you have cleaned up data, system, preload and rest it is the process of reinstalling the firmware as there is no ROM to boot to at that point (i.e once you have cleaned up everything).

So in the thread you linked to it gives these instructions:
Installation
1.a Pre installation : (For clean installation, optional)
- Make backup with Titanium Backup or other similiar app.
- First wipe cache and data
And you are saying I should do this instead:
Installation
1.a Pre installation : (For clean installation, optional)
- Make backup with Titanium Backup or other similiar app.
- First "Wipe Data-Cache-System-Preload"
And then continue with the rest of the process?

if you are rooted already and have backed up apps+data (non-system apps) with TBP you can follow any of the method (preferably 2nd) and once you are done flashing, root again using philz kernel and restore apps+data using TBP. Also if you go to philz recovery and then to wipe data/factory reset you will also find option for clean up to install new rom (something like that). Usually this method is often used if you are flashing custom rom but you can still do it even if you are flashing the stock rom (even same) again. Under mount/storage you can also mount USB storage while connected to pc and delete everything from internal sd before flashing too.

[Q] Trying to unflash ROM - very overwhelmed!

I recently rooted and flashed a custom ROM onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. I'm very new to this thing and find everything quite overwhelming, but I want to learn.
I flashed this ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119219 (the v6 No Wipe version because I was petrified about losing my data if I factory reset), but the phone is now extremely laggy and buggy, so I want to go back to the stock ROM (so I can do a nandroid backup) and then try a different custom ROM like Dmod.
So, my question is, do I have to factory reset my phone to go back to stock? Or can I just flash this file (http://hotfile.com/dl/189271016/833...T-I8190N-BTU-I8190NXXALL6-1356151513.zip.html) using the CWN recovery menu without wiping? I'm asking because my phone keeps giving me an error everytime I try to backup using the CWM Recovery menu.

That firmware is a zipped odin-file. Can't be flashed in CWM.
Make a cwm nandroid backup of your "/data" to your external sd (that's your installed apps)
You can also backup your apps and appdata using titanium backup or similar, for later restore.
Just remember to never backup/restore systemapps.
Backup internal sd to computer just to be sure, if you in any situation have to make a factory reset. Make sure any kind of backup is on your external sd before you make factory reset, or it will be lost forever

Backup your data in CWM, flash my ROM and restore your data with CWM.

CWM has NO choice to backup/restore only parts of the device. Only a full backup is possible.
This is only in TWRP. Pity! I only use CWM because TWRP makes corrupted backups (three times) for me.
Or is it possible to pick out only DATA from the backup? And what is happen with the dalvik cache, which
consists of the byte-code for all installed apps, optimized for the ROM which created it?
"advanced restore and restore only /data". Is this the way in CWM that you mean @benz?

Yes that's exactly what I meant, "advanced restore and restore only /data"
You don't have to worry about cache and dalvik because it's automatically created on the initial start.

I was surprised that after flashing stock ROM by ODIN, phone was not cleaned from the user data.
I mean: account settings, applications installed by user, etc.
I know that flashing dont erase data from internal/external SD card, but why all data was still exist?
Only Wipe Data / Factory Reset will erase all user data?

Nope, factory reset will not erase all user data. Go into setting/storage and delete from there (not sure cause I didn't have the device now). If you want to erase using odin, tick the repartition box while flashing the firmware. This is the easiest way I think.

Odin flash doesn't wipe user apps and their data, but it may cause bugs if you come from another ROM...
E.g : if u soft bricked on stock JB, just odin flash is necessary.
for other ROMs, it may or may not lag.

I will describe my way.
I tried to install CM 10.2
I did factory reset, next steps follow procedure.
When I did first start, unfortunately keyboard stop working, so my cyjanogen install failed and I decided back to old system using backup.
After restore and start, phone required settings like on first start after factory reset.
Lol, big surprise.
Ok, I entered necessary information but after reset -
again same like after factory reset
I tried from another backup with same result.
Hmm, big mess.
So I flash stock ROM by Odin.
And new surprise - phone with fresh system and all my own settings and applications from last restore.
Two disappointments:
1. Restore from backup does not cause a return to the initial state.
2. Flash ROM by Odin don't make factory state of phone.
I have question, if format partitions: system and data and next restore backup will do real state phone on this backup?

1. Almost every restore from backup for me it returned phone on state when backup was made. Only if my backup was bad (did not have enough place on sd for backup or something corrupted it).
2. Flashing stock ROM by Odin do not touch data partition (or folder whatever it is). So if you want to erase that, you need to make factory reset. It is like that on every Samsung Android device - I am not sure for other, never used.
When you come back from any CM10.2, Omni 4.3 and CM11 based ROM - first flash stock with Odin, do factory reset - and after that restore backup (ofcourse first root, install CoCore kernel for CWM before restore - you can't use restore in stock recovery).

Explanation for that, TeamJanica used preload partition for swap, and it is patitioned in other format than the one stock ROM use. That partition is not used on CM for files, but it has it's use on stock based ROM.

Ive got a problem with frp protection my daughter forgot everything so i restored to factory and used odin 3 v13.3 and correct firmware to flash it but when odin says pass the phone erases itself of the flashed firmware it’s a galaxy s7 edge any help would be grateful im pulling my hair out now .

i accidentally wiped vendor,syastem and all and now i can only install custom gsi roms.
While flashing stock frimware it stuck at set partition adn cannot install stock frimware please helpe to get this fixed?

supposedly you have downloaded the stock FW, flash via Odin with re-partition ticked. if it fails, extract the PIT file from CSC_OMC_OXM_XXX save it in a location and load it at the pit session via Odin the re-flash again with re-partition ticked.

Problem with my TMO Note 4

Hi, Im having problems with my phone. In the 3 different roms I tried the same, The 3 nandroids I made I can't restore and give errors, Cant restore user apps from titanium backup apps alone or with data, optios for restore is unavailable and now this message at startup "uids on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable"
I think this problems are related. Someone know what it can be? Bad partitions or something?

Quick question, are you doing a Wipe Data/Factory Reset when changing roms?. If not try going booting to recovery choose Wipe>Advance> choose everything except Internal Data and SD> wipe 3 times to be sure then install Rom and after it finishes Wipe Davik/Cache then boot up.

Like I said I followed directions by the book and that includes odin the base of the same baseband and bootloader.

Then it's likely your partitions been corrupted somehow, you should rma for a new device

Yes I think something like that but Its not possible to test it and be sure? I bought it used and I don't think I can send it back anyway apart from that phone works great.
