[Q] I have a rooted Nook HD and its running extremely slow - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have a Nook HD that I have rooted and was running on a SDcard CM10.1 install. After Barnes and Noble gave the device the option to use the play store, I returned to the stock installation because even on a Sandisk Class 4 SD card the CM10.1 was a little laggy for my tastes. However, the device feels even laggier now than it did on CM10.1. Things like the settings drop down often take 5-10 seconds to pop up. The brightness slider doesn't follow the finger at all and lags behind where I tell it to go. In addition, auto rotating causes some ugly behavior where the wallpaper will black out part of the screen and then fill in a second or two later.
I never had any of these problems before I started using the CM10.1 install when I was just running the device stock-rooted. I'm not sure what to do to fix this, other than a factory reset which would wipe all my apps and books and things and hope for the best. Any advice guys?

You did not say which HD you were running, 8GB or 16GB, and you did not say whether you were running the Hybrid CM10.1. In any case you are probably running out of space in your internal memory. Look at sdcard and see how much free space you have. If it is less than 3GB, delete or move some of your media files from there. See if that helps.

I've got the 16 GB edition, and I've returned to the stock OS. (No more CM). As for storage, I've got 53% available of the internal storage and 94% available on my SD card so I dopn't think that's the problem.

The reason I was asking about Hybrid is just getting rid of the SD does not remove the internal Hybrid files and they can take up a lot of unnecessary internal space. You need to remove those manually.

Ah, no I was simply running the SD Card installation of 10.1. I wasn't comfortable mucking around in the actual installation files, although I was interested in the hybrid install. The main reason I went back to stock was that CM10.1 was running pretty slow from the sd card and with the play store now available to anyone, I figured I had no reason to worry about flashing g-apps and all that jazz.

EMMC install, multi user, and adb
1] When I first got my Nook HD+ ( a Mother's day present for my wife) I installed CM 10.1 on a Kingston 16 Gb SD card and it was very slow to the the point of being unusable. So I installed via the EMMC method and now it runs really good. CM turns a mostly lame product into a totally awesome one.... Thanks verygreen. Thanks Thanks Thanks.
2] CM is the only way I have found to get true multi-user capability. The stock Android with any launcher I tried did not switch accounts(email accounts were for the other user)
3] One program (MightyText) installed perfectly on my wife's account, but Google Play reported that it is not compatible with my device when I tried to install it on my account. I am guessing this is not specific to CM or the Nook.
4] I enabled ADB wireless and I am able to ping my tablet, but both Windows 7 and Ubuntu report device offline wehn I "adb devices"
5] CM 10.1 runs sooo great for being an early build. I experience a little touchiness with the wallpaper and an occasional wallpaper stopped responding. Thanks verygreen. Thanks Thanks Thanks.
6] I really want to run TWRP recovery (installed without SD card) but no luck yet. I'm not sure i'm doing it right. I copied the .zip to my boot SD, selected install from the Clockworkod recovery menu, and it reported installed. But when I reboot without the SD card, it boots back into CM 10.1. How does recovery know how to install a recovery to the recovery location?
BTW Bonehead Experience:
Don't install the wrong GAPPS. GAPPS for CM10 (not 10.1) goes into a forever loop reporting the Setup Wizard stopped

There are two ways to boot to emmc installed TWRP.
First is to hold the power and n keys together when booting.
The second is to go to settings, about tablet and tap the build number several times. That will enable developer options. Go to that and check off Advanced reboot. Then when you use the power off menu it adds the recovery option to the reboot menu.

Hey thanks a bunch this works. Actually I think it worked all along. When I hold Nook+power, after the Nook screen, I get a black screen. I then tap the power button and then it reboots into TWRP. Is this normal to to have to tap the power button?
Also, I have tried the Quick Boot app (Quick Boot -> Recovery) but it just reboots. Anyway, I'll try the Advanced reboot stuff next maybe that will fix reboot apps.

I use CWM so don't know about TWRP and tapping power. But I did have that happen on an old CWM SD. Just had to touch power and it appeared after the blank screen.
Quick boot recovery has never worked.
But the advanced reboot should work.

Stuck boot "Read Forever"

Hi!
I have a problem a Nook of a friend which is stuck on Read Forever screen
I had install the rom of CM on it. and after I went to rom manager to make an update of the recovery i tried to reboot the device.
after of that the nook is stuck in this screen,
I tried to make a bootable SD recovery card but it does not boot from the SD either.
Any solution.
Is CM7 installed on the card or the internal memory?
sorry guys I had made a bad copy of my sd card recovey.
everything is ok now.
please Mods delete my thread if possible!
Thanks in advance!
merry x-mas guys
Got a problem,
Step-son got a nook color from his grams, intended to put CM7 on it so he has some halfway decent tablet, so he can play his flash games on it.
- after setup of the Nook color, it downloaded version 1.4.1 of it's own B&N OS
- did the uNooter from an 8 GB SD card (according to these instructions http://wiki.cyanogen...ll_Update_Guide), worked almost like a charm, at reboot i got a popup reading "default action: Home OR [that special menu-loader from the uNooter on the SD card]. after tapping the special menu-loader i was able to go into ROM MANAGER, did FLASH CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY, 5 minutes later gave SUPER USER/ROOT permissions, reboot, worked fine.
- tried to put the CM 7.1 on said 8 GB SD card, noticing that the uNooter image only has a ~70 MB partition and the rest of the 8GB is unused, so the 100MB "update.zip" doesn't fit (obviously).
- DOWNLOADING Roms via ROM MANGER directly is obviously a no-go, because it has no premium license, and loading it from the 8GB SD-card isnt working because the partition was only ~70 MB small.
- ASSUMING that the uNooter is NEEDED EVERYTIME to get into that special menu-loader for the Color Nook, I selected in ROM MANGER the option PARTITION SD CARD, thinking it will lead me into a menu where i can make another partition, beside the uNooters, to dump the CM 7.1 update.zip to flash the Nook Color's Rom with CM 7.1
- next thing I know, it reboots, and its stuck at the "Read Forever"-boot screen.
I PRESUME that ROM MANAGER's "partition SD card" screwed with the internal/virtual 'SD-card partition' and not my actual microSD chip loaded into the Nook Color's microSD-slot.
Is there a way to restore the device and/or load CM 7.1 on it, and if so, how; or am i ****ed ?
cheers
@
PS: is there a way to force-reboot the Nook Color? like as it's on phones often the case, by force-crashing it by holding down a combo of keys ? if so, which ones?
Atlana, same question answered here, as well as over on CM forum.

Hold power button for 20 seconds or so to force power off. Do it twice until you see it start to boot.

Hello XDA community let me start by saying thank you for sharing all this great info. I finally made the decision to install over my B&N HD OS and go full Droid using cm-10.1-20130615-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc. Its running like a damn beast BUT one little thing is irking me. Whenever I download an app/game EVERYTHING seems to go to the internal memory and not my freakin' empty 32gb micro sd :good:. Furthermore, I don't even see the option in apps to "move to sd". How can I remedy this issue?
P.S- Yes the Sd card is formatted correctly and can be seen in storage.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Apps2Sd is not supported in CM10.1.
And verygreen has the emmc version of CM10.1 set to use internal memory by default and there is no setting to change that. But I have developed a flashable zip that will swap internal and external SD's so that the default goes to external. See my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and look at item 4.

Is this fairly reliable ? I purchased a 32GB model, thinking I would need it but, after 2 weeks I am hardly using any space. Perhaps I should return and get a 16GB model instead...

One last question - is it normal to see a1 or 2 reboots a day. They seem to happen by random.

I don't get any reboots, but many users do. I think it depends on what apps you have installed and which run in the background that might be causing the crash and reboot.

Hey Leapinlar I tried your advice and I'm not getting any results. Here is exactly what I did.
1. Boot into CWM wiped the system and cache
2. installed cm-10.1-20130624-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc
3. installed NookHD-HDplus-SDSwap-for-verygreen-CM10.1-on-emmc-rev2-(06.16.13).zip
4. Boot into cm-10 went into settings then storage (Verified MicroSD is detected 29gb)
5. Installed HD Widgets and it automatically goes to the Internal Storage
Am I doing something wrong? Please tell me I am lol...
I also do a reboot and try again but no luck. Any other advice? Maybe something I can do manually?

The swap does not effect where things get installed. They will always get installed to internal memory. The swap only effects where apps download and save their media files.
If you are running out of room to install apps, delete or move some of the media files from internal memory. App installation files and internally stored media files share the same free space. If you get rid of some internal media files, more apps can be installed.

Nook HD+: bootable SD after 2.1.1?

I have a new Nook HD+ on the way, I plan to register it and then install CM 10.1, but I'm concerned I saw in another thread that someone wasn't able to boot off an SD and the update automatically installed. Can anyone confirm they were able to still boot of an SD card after installing 2.1.1?
I was able to boot off a Transcend Class 10 SD card after installing the 2.1.1 update.
Some HD/HD+ units reportedly have difficulty booting off SD card, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2288688. The problem has nothing do with the stock ROM, new or old.
Ok, thanks. Should have it today and will go ahead as planned. Just concerned me it was a brand new update and I'd only seen the negative response, but it sounds like it should be good.

My HD+ would not boot with a 4gb card or a 2gb card, I tried it at least 10 times apiece, however I did get it to boot with a SanDisk TransFlash 256 MB with just the boot image files and CWM.
It boots to the 256MB card first try everytime. So as soon as CWM loads I swapped the 256 for the 2gb and did a stock backup, rooted and installed CM.

Try some of the tips here:

It can be hard to get the SD to boot sometimes. In particular try the one where you hold the SD in.

but i forgot to copy universal root onto my sd card..............so can i root my nook later after installing cyanogenmod?

I am tempted to dispute this. I had a brand-new HD+ with stock firmware v2.0.4 which consistently (and always at first attempt) booted from sd card (Kingston 4GB, cl 4).
After upgrading to stock firmware v2.1.1, but with no other changes, it wouldn't boot once in 50+ attempts. The sd card was unchanged, the HD+ hardware was the same, so this behaviour would seem to point to the firmware change as the culprit, doesn't it?

It does, but booting is controlled by the hardware chip firmware. There is no way for b&n to change that remotely.
A way to test your theory is to do an 8 failed boot with stock recovery installed and go back to 2.0.4. Then see if your booting trouble goes away.
Edit: If that is really the case, the solution is to revert to 2.0.4 and immediately upgrade to CM. Then it should boot SDs ok.

My HD+, which originally came with 2.0.4 and got immediately auto-updated to 2.1.0 and then later to 2.1.1, (luckily) has not had any problem booting off SD.
The boot-device selection process is controlled by the hardware configuration and bootstrap code in ROM (this is the device's real ROM, as opposed to the Android OS software that is commonly but incorrectly referred to as "ROM"); see http://omappedia.org/wiki/Bootloader_Project for an overview of the boot process, and more gory details can be found in http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swpu270s/swpu270s.pdf.
Have you re-checked "bootability" of the boot partition of your SD card, or tried a freshly burned SD boot image? I have had a few instances of Recovery or ROM SD cards rendered un-bootable after the stock ROM created files/folders on them.

As I wrote in my first post, the sd card (which booted properly with v2.0.4) was unchanged. I deleted all stuff the HD+ had put on it (a bunch of empty directories, if I recall correctly) and it had only the 5 CWM boot files and 2 zips I wanted to install. To the best of my knowledge the sd card was unchanged.
Never mind, it's probably one of those things...

Hi,
Ok that installed ok but still having issues: on boot all apps and processes crash (stop responding) when unlocking the nook if I clear cache in cwm it boots fine and I can see that the swap has occurred internal still shows 5gb but is actually my 32gb sd card. However I can't side load any apps I get an app not installed message even though unknown sources is ticked also as soon as I reboot the nook its back to square one and all the processes and apps crash.
I never saw any instructions for installing this i simply flashed from cwm recovery. Is there a set install order or process for this maybe I'm doing something wrong? I.e. does it need cm 10.2>sd swap>gapps all on initial flash? The only thing I can think is I'm installing the sd swap after I have installed a few apps
Cheers for the help,

Remember this is a kludge, so everything does not work perfectly. I have found that sideloading apps from one of the SDs (I can't remember which) fails. Just copy the apk to the other one and try. And the setting storage shows wrong.
But I have not had apps and processes crash. If you have apps that were using internal for media storage, you may have to move their media files from internal to external. Like you say, you may want to start fresh with CM10.2, gapps and swap before you install any apps.

Hi,
ok I cant seem to get this working. I have a similar mod on my S3 which works perfectly. I have done the following:
1) Tried it WIth 10.1 RC3. Boot to recovery wiped data and cache flashed 10.1 RC2 > GAPPS > SDSWAP on boot the swap hasn't happened if I then reboot and flash the swap again and go into storage the calculating space hangs at calculating and no apps will open when you click on them.
2) as above but tried flashing 10.1 RC2 > SDSWAP >GAPPS exactly the same results as above.
So it doesn't seem to work with 10.1 or 10.2?
EDIT: This is driving me insane lol
Ok if I flash the cm 10.1 and SDSWAP then look at es file explorer the swap has worked and apps open ok SDCARD0 shows 29GB and SDCARD1 5GB but I have the same issue as with 10.2 if I try and install an .apk from SDCARD0 it opens and displays the app permissions as normal then as soon as you click install you get an app not installed message ? IF I copy the .apk to SDCARD1 (the internal) I get a problem parsing package error. So the swap works but I cant install any .apk's

I told you that settings/storage does not work. Why try it again and be surprised that it does not work?
And I just tested it again on the HD and install fails if you try from the real external SD. But it works from the internal SD. And I get no app crashes.
This is on the 7/08 CM10.1 from verygreen. I will now try on CM version.
Edit: I just updated to CM10.1 RC2 and it works the same.

Ok Thanks for checking that's strange as it definately doesn't work for me. I will just have to use the SD Card Install instead as I only have an 8gb nook and its not enough space.

[Q] Dual Boot Nook HD+ with Rom Selection at startup?

Hello,
I have been doing some searching on the forums for the past few days and I have not come across this question or if the process exists.
I was wondering if it was possible to have a dual boot of the Stock Rom and Cyanogen where you would be given the option of selecting which one you wanted to boot into when powering on the Nook HD+ ?
I've seen some posts about having both and having to pull the SD card during the boot process to have the nook boot stock. I also recall reading about a method of having both the Stock and CM both loaded on the internal memory but i believe this was abandoned.
Mostly what I am looking for is a simple method to have the both without needing to pull the card.
Thanks in advance to any recommendations or suggestions.
EDIT: it looks like a similar question was asked that I missed:

When you Dual Boot, is it simulare to a linux/windows dual boot, you pick a default OS and time out period ? - OP

It is possible to set up a boot menu to leave the card in and let you choose from a menu, but verygreen's stock SD does not use that. - Reply

Is there any links or tutorials showing how to do this?
Yes, this is possible if you have stock on internal memory and CM on SD. If you use bokbokan's version of CM10.1 or CM10.2 on SD it comes with a boot menu that allows you to choose. If you are using verygreen's version of CM10.1 or CM10.2 on SD, his does not have that menu. But if you look at my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, I have made a zip to add that menu to his version. See item 9.
