[Q] Lost some contact, where are they? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use a programme called VAULT where i can save lots of private number ect.
i recently installed a new rom, so before i did that i went into vault and it asked me do i want to save all numbers to phone and remove them from vault. i said yes and then went ahead and cleared data ect.
now on the new rom, i cant find these contacts.
where will the be?
their not on my phone list?

it saves the contacts to some file in the internal storage... install vault again and search for them.. or if its stored in VCF format, use the import/export option in the contacts menu

thanks for the reply,
I'm not that clued up when it comes to phones ect.
can you please explain a bit more where i'll be able to find these contacts.
I really do need them.

search in internal SD card for new folders .... check for .vcf files... open contacts app and hit the menu button and select import.. and it will scan the SD card for you., also try to install vault again and check the restore feature

I've installed it again and it has no restore feature.
i think it has 1 if you pay for the full VAULT, but i dont have that.
it clearly asked me before i erased it, do you want to transfer your contacts to phone memory, and i clicked yes.
so they must be saved somewhere

I just tried to go into contacts, click menu and import from storage, it then come up saying 'searching for vCard data on sd card'
and after a few minutes it comes back with nothing

Why don't you ask the developer of the product where the exports are stored?

hmmm may be in that case it may have moved it back to your contacts and when you installed a new rom.. if you wiped data then it got erased again,.,

this is the programme...
Vault-Hide SMS, Pics & Videos
NQ Mobile Security (NYSE:NQ)
so would the developer be NQ Mobile Security?
if so, how do i go about contacting them?
I also went into my sd card and searched for .VCF files but nothing come back.

no, their was nothing i was really concerned about losing, apart from these numbers,
i've changed roms a few times and always just went into the play store to re-install anything i wanted back.
all my pics and videos stayed where they were.
its just this time, i totally forgot to write down the numbers i wanted to keep off this programme.

the only change of getting them back is if the app stored those numbers on the SD card.. if it moved it back to contacts .. same as it deletes when we add a private contact, then its lost... still as ThaiDai said... go to playstore and there is an option to email the dev...
i have also used this program but where is the option to restore the contacts back, other than cloud?

If they were at some point synced with your PC & your talking about losing them in both places you can use XP system retore for the PC & then re-sync.
Otherwise there's not much you can do.

System restore, isnt that just system files ?
I am pretty sure that no data at all is altered, it even says that no data is changed when you run it. Could be wrong though.
If your contacts were synced to an exchange server chances are that the IT department running it conducts regular backups and you could restore your contacts that way.
Basically, is there any copy of your contacts anywhere? Home computer? Laptop? Work server? A backup? Or perhaps someone stealing (touch wood) your data
System Restore works? It happened to me. . . LOL but that works for sure?
Try this in the future https://zyb.com/ . that might help
If you use Activesync with Outlook.
Look in your deleted items directory in Outlook on your PC/Laptop, you will find them there. Just select all and move them back to your contacts folder and when you next sync it will put them back on the device.
Same goes for anything like Outlook mail, Notes or Calendar items...
THANK YOU!!!! How do you select them all? I have 2007 version BTW so how?

Usual windows, left- click the first then SHIFT-click the last or CONTROL-left-click to select seperate ones. Right click and move to Personal folders/Contacts.
BE CAREFUL here.. when you choose where to move them, select the small '+' symbol at the side of Personal Folders to open, DON'T click on the actual Personal folders as it will just push them straight into the root folder and cause you problems.
EDIT: when I said select 'all' I meant all the contacts...Don't just select everything including mail to put in the contacts directory. Contacts to contacts, mail to mail etc...
I just clicked edit>select all and just moved them all to contacts!! THANK YOU AGAIN YOU SAVED MY ASS!!!
System restore doesnt restore the content of pst files or mailboxes- that would be insane! Imagine doing a system restore and losing your appointments/emails/contacts that you have received since...

How can i tell where my contacts are saved?

How can i tell where my contacts are saved?
When i first got my phone I synced my phone with my outlook contact on my pc. Now when i want to add a contact using my phone it's asking me if i want to save the contact to either my phone or my sim card. I would like to keep things consistent and save it in the same place as the rest of my contacts. So does anyone know how to find out where my current contacts are saved?
Thanks.

Good questions, I don't have the answer but I'd like to know. I have a similar thread that no one has answered yet.
BTW, when I go to add a new contact I don't get your options!
My choices are:
1. Phone
2. Google mail
That is very strange. I'd like to get SIM card as an option.
If you want to know where your contacts are saved then go to your contacts, click the settings button, go to display options and from there you will be able to select what contacts to view, sim, phone and google. Click on one to view and that way you will know where they are all saved.
No idea why you cant have sim contacts mark, maybe your sim is full??

First of all, if you have your phone set up as I do,
Settings/Wireless Networks/Flight mode, 99% of the time, then you won't see SIM card as an option when you go into Contacts/Settings/Display.
This is one of many deficiencies of the SGS. I hope they change this in the next upgrade.

See above.
Furthermore, having just experimented with the SIM card setting now, it is quite 'limited'. It will only save the name, tel. number and e-mail address of your contacts, nothing else. You lose pics, home addresses, groups, and any other fields that you added etc.
But back to my original question.
How can you find the folder/files that the contacts are stored in on your phone?
Also, if you export your phone contacts to your SD card and then delete your phone contacts, will importing the contacts from your SD card bring EVERYTHING back faithfully? No lost pics, home addresses, groups etc.?
Has anyone here tried this?
TIA

[Q] Lost contacts going to Cog 2.2-6

Ok...I totally F'd up. I flashed from 2.1 to COG 2.2-6 not knowing that my contacts on the simm card were going to be erased. Is there a way to get them back?
Click on the phone icon, then click on contacts, then click on the far left button on the bottom of your phone the one to the left of the home button(forgot what its called) there will be a import option. Your contacts may be saved to your memory card if you put them there. Worth a look.
Also next time use this to export contacts before flashing.

well...I'm really hosed now...back to square one...I tried Titainium back to get contacts....that f'd up the contact app in the phone app...keeps force closing...then I tried to restore to JH7 using Rom manager.....that f'd up my log on. Now it gets stuck at the welcome screen....so I then tried to go back to my very first backup.....same results....looks like its Odin to JF6 for me....
But...I was wondering.....does a rom manager back up save the contacts stored on the simm card?.....could of saved myself a bounch of trouble if I knew the answer to that question ahead of time....
Contacts saved on the sim card should not be effected by flashing a rom at all, it is only contacts saved on the actual phone that would be lost. I'm amazed that so many people these days don't sync their contacts with the cloud, all I need to do after flashing a ROM is enter in my Google account info and then all contacts etc are synced up automatically.

Either use Ringdroid from the market to assign ringtones to Gmail contacts or just create a phone based contact with the same name that should automatically link to the gmail contact and allow you to set a ring tone, kind of annoying to do though but much better than losing your contacts.

UPDATE...got phone back up and running on Cog 2.2-6. Found my .vcf backup with Astro....uploaded it to Google and then sync'd back to phone...all better....on side note...for whatever reason my phone is not picking up the .vcf when I try and restore it from the contacts menu. I Googled the issue and seems to be common. Thanks for the responses.
Same problem, but I found that turning on car mode caused the contacts to suddenly appear. After turning off car mode contacts worked properly. I saved the contacts to the sim card between update tries & the contacts import would never find it. Guess Titanium had it but left it hidden for some reason.
Hey, here's a better answer. You'll something like Root Explorer. Seems the contact app saves the contacts in /sdcard/sd (provided you exported them to the sd card. When you try to re-import them the app claims nodda. That's because the app is looking at /sdcard/external_sd for whatever reason. I just copied the .vcf file over to that location & bam contacts will import.

Since the thread is now here it would be nice if you shared that info for anyone else that might be interested.
For the future, you can do this without an app. Simply go into the menu while in Contacts, select Display Options, turn off everything except SIM Card so that only the contacts on the SIM are displayed, then just click Delete, Select All, and get rid of them. Then go back to Display Options and turn on the ones you want.

I didn't, they were there from previous phones where I had used the SIM as a backup. Unfortunately, when you copy contacts to the SIM you lose their original formatting and the SIM splits contacts with more than one number into individual contacts making them useless for exporting. Better to just keep the SIM clear and backup your contacts via Google or, as I do, via Android Manager, which I use to sync to Outlook.

Thanks. I knew there was a way to do this but never had seen.

Contacts appear three times in messaging.

Certainly others must have this problem. It stems from, I believe, having identical SIM, Google, and Phone contacts.
But that's what I WANT. But I don't want everyone's name to appear three times when I want to send someone a text message. Is there ANY solution to this?
long press one of them, then "join contact"
day one...
I had double names appear for texting that went away by ungrouping them in contacts. I believe all my contacts became "grouped" when I tapped my backup .vcf file twice after a rom install...which may not be the same situation as yours.

Just change the view to only show you contacts from one of the three databases. Either Google, phone, or sim.
From contacts hit the leftmost softkey and then select more. Then select display options

My Contacts only displays my phone contacts. This has no bearing on the following:
1. When I want to send a text, everyone's name appears three times.
2. When I click the call button in a text, it asks me which number I want to call, then lists each number three times.
Something is up.
Open a contact and hit edit. If the contact is grouped there will be a + sign. All my contacts were grouped. After ungrouping them, they showed up twice in contacts, and I had to delete one.

That WOULD solve the problem.... except:
1. I do not want to delete my contacts off my SIM. The SIM card carrying your contacts is a great feature.
2. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Phone. The Contacts menu looks a lot sleeker without the icons to the bottom right of each entry, and the pictures I feel load faster when they are stored on the phone.
3. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Google account. It stores my contact pictures as well as makes it easy when I flash over to a new ROM.
I will not delete these entries. They are all important. I want a real solution, and I am pretty sure one doesn't exist.
Edit: There isn't a "plus" sign, but each contact has three separate entries.
it was a little hard to understand at first but this is your poblem
#1 where do you want all your contacts saved to? PICK ONE (phone/sim/google)
open contacts> menu button > more > settings > save contacts to...
(google is better than sim or phone IMO auto backup and restore to net) but pick ONE. (uno, une, 1)
#2
open contacts> menu button > more > display options > choose contacts to display
only check the thing you picked above. UNCHECK the others

There is the problem. And yes, I do see the "Remember this choice" option, but that is also not a solution as 1. I do flash my phone often and I would have to remember it every time, and 2. I would have to remember it for all of my contacts, which would be a pain.
Trusselo's instructions in post #10 are dead on, except in your case, i'll ask that you choose to sync your contacts to a single google account rather than the other 2 options (phone or sim). Unless you often swap your SIM card to a dumb phone, this is your best option anyways.
To ensure we save all your contacts among all your storage locations.. First, adjust 'display options' in Contacts so that ALL your contacts are displayed from all your locations (duplicates are ok).
Next, still in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export/', then choose 'export to sd card.'
Now follow Trusselo's instructions in post #10.. Make sure you save contacts to a google account. Also when choosing 'display options', uncheck EVERYTHING, and ONLY check 'my contacts' under the google account you save contacts to.
Go to 'Accounts and sync' in settings and ensure that auto-sync is ON, and that 'sync contacts' is ON for the google account you're saving contacts to.
Now, in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export' again, and this time choose 'import from sd card'.
Open up GMail in a web browser, go to Contacts, go to 'my contacts', click on the 'more actions' button, choose 'find & merge duplicates'. Now just give your phone a minute to re-sync all your contacts with google..
This will clean up any duplicate contacts and phone numbers you may have. So you should only see one entry for each contact and number. It will also sync all your contacts regularly to your google account, even for new entries, which imo, is a lot safer than storing them directly on the phone or SIM card.
I've tested this method, and it should work for you if followed exactly. If there's anything that needs to be clarified, let me know.
I want them saved to my SIM card. And I want them saved to my Google Account. But I want them stored on my Phone.
I believe you want me to delete them from my SIM and from my Phone in order for this to work. I simply do not see why I would need to do that. If that is not what you are saying, then what is it? On my Contacts on GMail, there's only one number for each name.

To be clear, this will NOT delete contacts from you SIM card, nor from your phone. What this does is force ALL your contacts from your SIM AND your phone AND your Google account to be synced(copied) to your google account. Once that is done, all your contacts will appear on your google account and will be immediately copied back to your phone (as a locally saved copy).
Then what we're doing is just "hiding" all the duplicate contacts from your SIM card and 'Phone location' (not deleting them), so that we only see the contacts that were synced with your google account.. so its less confusing than viewing the same contact from 3 different locations.
All your old contacts will remain on your SIM card, only now all your old contacts and newly created ones will appear in contacts and be synced (backed-up) to your google account. This is useful because.. say you lose your phone, you will still have a copy of all your contacts in your google account and can be easily synced with a new phone, if they were stored on the SIM card or the 'Phone location' then they would just be.. gone.. lost forever. They will also sync back to the phone (with pics) if you flash a new ROM.
On another note, should you ever want to get a new phone and simply move your contacts, you can sync your contacts via your google account like I said, OR you could just go menu>import/export>export to sim card.
Make sense?

No, i'm asking you to do the opposite. I'm asking you to store all your contacts to Google, and ONLY display Google contacts, and UNCHECK (hide) SIM and PHONE from 'Display Options' so that you do not see any duplicate names or phone numbers.
This will most likely solve your problem with seeing duplicate entries and is a much smarter way of managing your contacts.

Actually, by your own admission, you're not.
"if you're asking me to change the display option to only display SIM/Phone/Google contacts, it is already set to do that."
Right there, you just said that ALL your contact locations are turned ON..which is the cause of you seeing 3 identical phone numbers for each contact. Earlier in the thread it was pointed out you need to ONLY select ONE option; the same location you are storing contacts to.
Let's say you already have all your contacts save to Google, that's great. That means you don't have to go through that entire process i wrote up. All that was meant to do is ensure ALL your contacts from all your locations were saved to google, but if that's already done then there's no need to go through all that.
It really goes back to Post #10.. assuming you have only have no duplicate phone numbers set up in google, then you just need to follow those instructions and you won't see those duplicates anymore.
Sounds like you either didn't follow the directions correctly in post #10 or not at all. The key thing is save your new contacts to google, then change the display options so ONLY, ONLY, JUST ONE, option is checked, and that is the Google account you are saving contacts to. Once this is done, you will not see duplicate entries anymore.
