[Q] Which files/apps find & assign ringtones? - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, thanks to this forum my skills are improving but I'm still messing up regularly ...
After flashing a stock ROM of Gingerbread 2.3.6, I went about removing the bloatware. Now my Ace only knows one ringtone (manic beeping, seems to be called "60") and my only option is to silence it. Screenshot attached.
Does anyone know what I've deleted, but shouldn't have? I removed the native 'Music' app - that's not it, is it?

I think you deleted the audio files so...
go to system/media/audio/ringtones and check your audio files

If only it were that simple! Ringtone files are still there - some .m4a tunes in sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ and .ogg ones in system/media/audio/ringtones For some reason, it either isn't looking for ringtones or doesn't know where they are.

LOL!!
Do a backup and then restore the last configuration which it was working properly. Be careful with the stuffs you'are going to delete XDDD
The fastest way to barebone any stock rom is flashing Stocklite rom, in my opinion, plus deleting more useless apps such as Gapps, default browser, twwallpapers, animated walls, useless widgets...

Restart ur phone & let "Media scanner" scan ur sdcard (if u haven't done yet) & use .ogg files(preferably) or mp3/mp4 for sdcard/media/audio/ringtones

Just had a look at this thread re Stocklite - never heard of it before!
Now all I need is to rescue my phone from its bootloop - I've been re-flashing the poor thing all day, now it won't accept root and only completes boot every so often.
If network providers would ship ROMs without all the pointlessly duplicated (but branded) system apps, none of this would be needed would it??!
<finishes rant, embarks on fourth emergency reset of the day, takes deep breath, drinks vodka>
Thank you for your patience

well... to avoid the bootloop do wipe factory reset and cache via stock recovery after flash a fresh stock rom and about root... Root+CWM 5.0.2.6. FIXED

Sorry to say, I haven't found the ringtone culprit.
Following your advice, Viper, I've re-flashed the stock ROM then CM4 followed by CM5, then Stocklite! It was a trial but I got there :victory:
I'm going to take out a bunch of apps, but keep making CM backups as I go - can't face another day like today!
Thanks for the recommendation, I like this ROM.

I found the missing ringtone culprit!
It's Media Storage 2.3.6 (PLAYLISTS). Without it, the phone sets all ringtones to Silent, with no other options.
I ended up having to wipe & redo everything, as simply copying the file back to my devices didn't work. I'm still re-installing the first device I buggered up (phone), so if anyone can tell me how to get it working on an existing setup in time for the tablet, I'll appreciate it!

[Q] Phone is wigging out, need techsperts help.

Hi guys,
I have been searching the forums for 2 weeks now trying to fix this myself, but I have put my pride in my pocket and am asking for help.
Backstory: Rooted phone, flashed CWM, used tons of custom froyo ROM's (doc roms mainly) and most recently Darky's 9.3 (awesome).
But then i decided I wanted Gingerbread (this is where the trouble began). Gingerbread worked just fine, but as there is no custom roms, I flashed back to 2.2 (obviosly screwed something up), because since then I have been plagued with process com.whatever.android.somethingelse has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.
please don't ask which force close message I am getting, lets just say, I am pretty sure I am getting them all!
I have flashed stock 2.1, custom 2.1, stock 2.2, custom 2.2's, I even went back to gingerbread a few times trying to fix this ***** of a problem. I tried re partitioning just the .pit file and then the other 3 files seporatly. NOTHING WORKS.
So, I am calling out to all you guys and girls who are heaps smarter than me to please help. the phone functions, turns on, make or receive calls and texts (not mms), emails work sometimes, but if I turn the phone off and on all the settings are wiped and I need to reload all the user details.
Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything, I cannot take pictures unless I select the external SD card, I cannot install apps from market or .apk. I cannot even move data to it when its mounted on the pc.
I am completely lost. please help me.
And thanks in advance.
I
C'mon guys, I know there is a lot to read, but please, can no-body help me?
Sounds like it might be a dead internal sd card. You said you tried a re-partition with 3 file firmware? That should fix pretty much anything. I think your only option is to return to samsung at this point.

Thanks for the response.
is it possible to fix myself?
As Samsung will not cover it, even if I flash the stock Telstra ROM, it will still show that it has been rooted?
In doing your research, I'm sure you've heard of the internal SD problems that plague the i9000, are you by chance with Bell Mobility? This line concerns me..
"Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything"
When I experienced multiple FCs (force closes) and incompatible system UID's, I tried flashing every kind of ROM there was with every kind of PIT file as well to no avail. However, one in particular worked for me and others. It is usually referred to as a full ROM. It contains the .csc and .sbl in it as well as the usual ROM contents.
The ROM I used is called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar. Note, flashing this ROM with a pit file (be it 512, 513, or 803) wouldn't help me at all. What fixed the problem was flashing ONLY the ROM file in ODIN. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread where I found this ROM. I suggest searching around for it, if you can't find it PM me, and I will up it somewhere for you.
I'm not sure if this will help with your specific case, but its worth a shot. Also, wherever applicable, do a factory reset, clear your cache, and a full wipe install.
Good luck.
[edit]
Do a complete wipe and install with a stock 2.2 or 2.1 ROM in ODIN, there will be no evidence of a root.

I do a factory reset, wipe cache and data every time, however after doing all of that and flashing a new rom, it still has my google account details in the phone?? this is wierd, as I factory reset from recovery mode AND wipe all data from within the phone? Any suggestions?
Edit: and no, its is an Australian Telstra i9000

I am using odin, this is the wierd part. I have tried repartitioning, not repartitioning, I have tried 512.pt 803.pit, full wipe and reset from both in the phones settings and recovery mode. reboot it, go through settup wizzard (which eventually force closes requiring me to reboot), go into accounts and there is my google account still set up???
Edit: also, I cannot find a file called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar, I am downloading i9000UGJH2.tar as we speak, but i doubt it is the one you were reffering to, if you are able to point in in the right direction, that would be ace.

If you're entering your gmail address in during the setup wizard, our google account will be linked. If you're not setting anything up and it is remembering your info, then something is definitely fishy.
I would flash back to a stock rom, and see what Samsung or your provider can do for you. In all honesty, the only thing I would be able to suggest is flashing and wiping
[edit]
When you download that ROM, open it up (using a program like WinRAR). The point of a full rom is that it contains
-cache.rfs
-dbdata.rfc
-factoryfs.rfs
-modem.bin
-param.lfs
-sbl.bin
-zimage
I'm unsure of any incompatibilities between the Canadian and Australian versions, but I will upload my copy for you to try.

I'm not entering any info during the setup wizard?
could it be something to do with the file system gingerbread uses? these issues only started when I went back from gingerbread to froyo? (and before you ask, I have tried going back to gingerbread with no solution)
I may have to bite the bullet and shoot it back to Samsung... or just buy another one! would love to try FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar if you could remember where you got it?
Thanks again for your help.

I seem to have remembered it being in this thread, which is why i had it on bookmark, but I'm not sure if the link has been removed or if i had been mistaken since I can no longer find it. I'm uploading for you to Rapidshare, where you can download as a free user...~30 mins . Again, I'm not sure if there are modem incompatibilities or not since this I am in Canada, and you are in Australia.

The way you're referring to accessing this internal SD....are you flashing your ROMs to an external microsd card?

Hey mate, no go, i got some functionality back on the phone, but still force closes and I cannot save anything to SD (or install apps).
another email account (an exchange server account) that was previously deleted has appeared back set up and working (I have not been able to set this up for a week), it appeared on its own which leads me to think there is a hidden partition on my internal sd, hence I cannot access it. must be something to do with Gingerbread.
Thanks for all your help though.

Hi mate,
I have tried that several times, i think there is a hidden partition thanks to Gingerbread.
I would be sure that your internal sd card is screwed but since everything worked fine before gingerbread something else has probably happened. Also your data wont delete and that seems to be the source of the problem. Try to install the lagfix from k13d and see if it had any results. This should reformat all partitions on the internal sd.

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

[Q] Custom Rom Help

Hi folks,
I’m looking at trying to make a custom rom for myself and learning along the way. I’ve read a couple of tuts on here which have been very good reading. I have a couple of questions that I hope someone would be able to help me with.
I plan to use Myth2 as my base rom, which seems to be the best rom out of the custom roms that I have tried. I wanted to have a stock base rather than a CM7 base.
I want to use the same launcher and keyboard that’s in Acopalypse, also I want to remove the following apps:- email/Radio/gmail/latitude/local/maps/memo/navigation/news/search/talk/youtube
As far as I know, I would need to do the following:
1)Extract Myth2 rom onto my computer.
2)Delete the aps that I mentioned above in the system/app directory.
3)Add the apps that I want in system/app directory.
4)Zip up the new rom
5)Get the rom ‘signed’
6)Install on my phone
Would the above work ok?
I’ve looked for the keyboard app in Acopalyse, but not able to find. Can anyone tell me where it is in the rom and if I can swap the keyboard in Myth2?
Thanks
EWF

I think the keyboard is LatinIME.apk
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
That would work, sometimes the apks are not there when you boot the rom for the first time, then you should just reboot...I usualy install the rom then the stuff I wanna add make a system dump copy to my pc and then edit from there to avoid errors
excellent! Thanks for the replies. I only have one phone and did not want to brick it, even tho I can fix it by flashing with odin.
Will let you know the result, once its done.
Thanks gain.
EFW
^^^^^^^^
For now while your still new don't touch the boot.img and META-INF folder and file.....IF you only mod system folder (Almost everything you can mod at the moment are in there) then the worst is a soft brick which can easily be fixed
My first go went pretty well. I swapped the keyboard from Acopalyse and replaced the keyboard in Myth2. I installed the rom, and only got one error. The keyboard was not working and always force closed.
So, I went back to the other keyboard, reziped and signed it, then flashed it, and it worked perfect. Removed all the apps I wanted to remove apart from one I forgot (silly me) and added the ones I wanted.
The only problem, maybe a problem. I installed FB, but it installed on the internal memory and not on the SD card. but other aps like opera and di.fm app went to the SD card. Not sure if its a FB problem or a apps2sd problem.
Will make a coffee and think about what I can add/remove/change for the next time.
Thanks for your reply

URGENT HELP! No sound from speakers after volume mod. Heaphones are okay.

I just got my verizon turbo xt1254 and have it unlocked, rooted and xposed installed, on SU4TL-44, and just put all my apps and data on it, then stupidly flashed the higher volume mod from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-maxx/development/motomaxx-volume-mod-t3019203 onto my phone. Now my phone has no sound at all from any source through the speaker. Headphones still work. Is there a way to fix this? Preferably without wiping my data or having to reroot and install xposed and all again?
Restore from backup, it's better from stock rom. I had a similar problem with another mod, i personally recommend viper4android, thats a good mod for the turbo, but it must be on compatible mode (using computerfreak excellent ROM)
Unfortunately I was an idiot and didn't make a backup. Lesson learned I guess. Would I be able to flash the pre rooted system image from this post http://www.theandroidsoul.com/update-droid-turbo-to-android-5-1-1-with-mofo-root-retained-yes-its-possible-now-81652/ and then just reinstall xposed? Or would that wipe my data partition also?
Have you tried just dirty flashing your current ROM?
I just got back into the game of flashing phones after being out for a tear it two, what us dirty flashing, and in on stock 5.1 just unlocked using sunshine and rooted and installed twrp.

Dirty flashing is flashing the rom without wiping any cache or data. You should go ahead and make a backup in twrp now. Also install titanium backup and then make a backup of your apps and data. Copy. Both twrp and titanium backups to your pc so you can get back to them if need to. The twrp backup is not in the directory you might expect. I'd tell you but I don't remember off hand. If you search these forums it won't take you long to find.
After that you can flash a rom. The one you linked earlier was to get to 5.1 from 4.4 via mofo. If you want that one go to First Encounters thread. It will tell you what to download and how to flash it with twrp. You could also try Computerfreeks.
I don't know of a way to dirty flash what you are on, and guarantee that that you won't lose your apps/data. If you have your titanium backups it will be easier to restore. Still a pain but easier. You'll download titanium again, then restore your apps. That's better than downloading all of your apps again. If you haven't used titanium before, you need the pro version and should practice freezing, backing up and restoring before you flash any rom's.
To be honest, I'm not really THAT concerned with losing all my data. I still have it on my old droid maxx. I was just hoping for a way to fix my issue without losing it all if possible since I literally just out it all on there yesterday.

The mod that you flashed replaced /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml. You don't have to wipe anything to fix this. Unzip the mixer_paths.xml file that I've attached to this post and place it in a convenient location on your phone. Then use a root browser to copy this file to /system/etc on your phone (replacing the file that is currently at that location). Then set the permissions of this file to rw-r--r--. It should be good after a reboot.
I just tried that and I still have no sound, and now when I try to play a song in Google music or watch something on YouTube, I just get an error. And still no sound at all. Could I get the 2bd mixer paths file from you also by chance?

I'm running Computerfreek's mod of SU4TL-44, and there is no such file. However, there is a mixer_paths_i2s.xml file.
I had assumed that CF had not made any mods to this file, but that might be incorrect. I'll try to find the file from a stock SU4TL-44 image and that should fix the problem.
But like I said before, the only thing that the Moto Maxx volume mod that you flashed did was replace mixer_paths.xml, so you should not need any other files if that's all you've done.

Here's a flashable zip of the stock, unmodified mixer_paths.xml from SU4TL-44, courtesy of Computerfreek. Simply flash with TWRP.
Yeah I had apparently tried to fix it by replacing that file earlier with a different one, plus also tried to manually fix it too. I now have it fixed. I had the permissions wrong. My sound is back and working now! Thanks billion!! Any chance you know what I need to change to make my sound louder? I don't know what line to edit. But I miss the loud volume of my droid maxx.

Volume is definitely louder, still not as good as my maxx but at least it's an improvement. I appreciate all your help!! My phone is now fully working again, and customized to my liking :victory:

Awesome! No problem. If you feel adventurous and want to go louder, you can increase the values of RX(1-7) Digital Volume and DEC(1-10) Volume. Be careful with that though. You can break your speakers if you go too high.

CPL1 Firmware/ Rom Stock Plus

CPL1 Stock Plus Rom
I would just like to share an enhanced version of stock note 4 with the only "foreign" app being the grace InCallUI mainly because I have yet to locate a guide on how to make all the buttons layout correctly and there is also very minor cosmetic changes (removed words from lock screen and extended the drop-down panel to go all the way across the screen). All features and modifications were done by me using guides from @Kamy, @ikrom, @jovy23, @asc1977, @EMSpilot, @tdunham, @daxgirl, @tkari4, @Hani K., @Misterxtc and the InCallUI ported by @Albe95. Last but certainly not least, all this was made possible with @ASSAYYED's great rom kitchen and @Ticklefish's Tickle my Android.

Yes, the firmware includes everything except recovery and aboot. Also a few things I forgot to mention, the switch to turn on volume up for flashlight is in the display settings and to set the apps for toolbox you just long press on the toolbox icon (when activated) and then drag it up to the edit section at the top of the screen. Sorry guys I'm terrible at writing the info and summary for these roms but hopefully I can get it figured out one day.

I understand. Please clarify for me...
I'm on pj2 unlocked/rooted. I want to stay unlocked/rooted. Do I flash the "partial".zip, or Odin the "full" ? :fingers-crossed:
When I read through hsbdr's post's, I must have 5 or six tabs open
I prefer instructions simple, and retail and Dev posts/instructions separate from each other. As well as return to "unrooted" or "keep root" posts. Many have accidentally locked their BL as a result. There is no reason to include a "return to stock-locked" link in with a custom rooted ROM post/links. Uhg
Thank you for keeping it simple for us, and all your work!

Yeah it does get a little confusing. That's the main reason I just posted my own link just to make sure I'm not linking to the wrong thing. Fun fact while testing all this out, I was able to flash pj2 roms while I was on the cpl1 firmware and everything worked. I just tested one rom but it seems like once you upgrade your firmware you may not have to downgrade again if you want to go back to another rom.

oooh really! So probably there is nothing new in the upgrade only that it's un-downgradable:silly:

The first couple times I tested a firmware that I made, I was terrified of locking my bl. I flashed the one I posted and then tested for downgrade and all is good, but it doesn't seem to be necessary to downgrade again. As far as differences between them the only thing I noticed was more security stuff and some different bloatware.
Forgive me...
So the "full firmware link" (download file name: "cpl1_tar_32bit_ext4") doesn't include the recovery and aboot files(?)

That's correct. If you flash it and let it boot you'll have your custom recovery, unlocked bootloader, no root, no busybox, cpl1 modem/kernel, and odexed system. That way if someone wants pure stock they can just flash the supersu file and your set.
She's running great for me! I installed xposed and oscar kernel and it's stable as a rock! Any chance of the additional grace apps - email, contacts, etc? Great work man!

I just tried the email zip at this post and it worked. When I get off work I'll test those others. They all should work but if you don't want to be the guinnie pig I can do it.
So oscar works? I thought it might need an update but that's good to know.
Yes, Oscar 13 works great. I'll give the grace apps a try - thanks again!

For some reason after flashing grace email, I see high battery usage for email 19-30%. Tried clearing data but still see the drain. Am I missing something?

Honestly, I only use that app when testing it and I haven't noticed any battery drain, but I can't say I've ever checked either. I wonder if it just needs to settle in. Maybe someone that uses it more can chime in to see if it's an issue for everyone. If you want to, see if after a while it goes back to normal range and if it doesn't try to get a log and we can see what we can come up with.
Hello @kevintm78. Need a little help. I just odin'd the full firmware and now my phone won't boot. I get unfortunately System UI has stopped. I was on CPJ1 before I did this. Should I just try to restore a backup? Thanks

If Odin completed it should have at least updated your firmware. If that's the case you could just go ahead and flash the rom. All the files from the full firmware get overwritten anyway. Just make sure you do a complete wipe (everything but your sd/Ext sd) and you should be good to go.

Thank you. Yes I just restored a backup just fine and it's also showing my baseband is now CPL1. Now I'm going to flash your rom so I can have stock whenever I want it. Thank you for your time and help. And for the upgrade.
@kevintm78...thank you for this. I had lost 4g somewhere in all my flashing. I tried reflashing partial firmware and even restoring backups wouldnt give me 4g again.I was getting ready to go through the entire lock, unlock, root process again when I found this thread. I downloaded the full firmware in the op, flashed with flashfire, rebooted into recovery, wiped dalvik, data, cache, and rebooted system. I now have 4g back. I made a nandroid of stock, and then clean flashed LOS and still have 4g. So thankful to you!!

Yeah man, I'm a bit of a flashaholic too and was having the same issues a while back when experimenting with data fixes and thought that I fried my sim card. Like you I tried the partial first but the only thing that got my 4g back was flashing a full stock firmware. :good:
