You often read here how N4 owners are terrified of scratching, cracking or otherwise scarring the fragile N4 glass panes. (Quite frankly I haven't paid any special attention to mine nor use any screen protectors, often carrying it my pockets together with keys and coins, and the phone has held up well.)
But if you should crack or scratch yours, wear it proudly like a battle wound. A war scar. A unique badge of honor. And I've attached a recent article which shows that people are increasingly less inclined to rush out to repair their cracked smartphone glass and instead relishing in their uncommon individuality.
Remember: No two cracks are the same.
(Care to show us a photo of your cracked screen? I'll definitely do so once mine does. )
Well.....
If mine cracks it's getting repaired ASAP!
But then again I am OCD about my phone(s).
Oh god, why.

I honestly think that people who crack their screens don't have the knowledge or the money to replace them, hence they try and make themselves feel better about it with this psycho-babble hipster nonsense.

That could very well be the explanation for some of them. After all, my read of the subjects the article was referring to tended to be young smartphone owners. Of course history teaches us that trends are usually started by the younger generation. I'm sure the first pair of jeans with knee tears weren't first worn by the 40-something crowd. Probably a couple of young indigant hipsters cruising around town with their well-worn jeans. I doubt very much we're going to see people intentionally cracking their phone screens like some of us used to take scissors to newer jeans to create the same effect, but then again I never thought that my then 60+ year old dad would be at Levis looking at their distressed jeans collection.
Not advocating a position. Just posting the article for discussion.

Many of my friends have shattered their iPhone's digitizers but still have full touch functionality. I've replaced several of their screens because repair shops have quoted them $80-100 and I told them if they buy it off eBay for around $25 I'll install it for them. If I didn't offer they'd probably still have shattered screens just because they aren't willing to pay a shop that much to replace them.
Recently my little brother shattered his n4's digitizer and it wouldn't detect touch on half the screen. Later that day he dropped it again and lost touch completely. So he has to replace it.

It's self consolation while inside their heart they are crying. If my N4 back cracks I probably going to buy dbrand skin, instead of proudly showing how careless I am.
I know I'm super clumsy. So my N4 has been in some form of hard case since I could get my hands on one. Currently loving my Seidio Convert. I'd rather not have to send another N4 back.

My phone is completely naked, not even screen protectors, and I have yet to contract a scratch. Last night I came close, I dropped it off of my bed and the face of it hit the cross-leg stabilizer beam thing (I'm sure there's a name for it, too lazy to Google) of my bed-side table, which is metal. I yelled an obscenity very loudly and panicked. Lucky for me, it didn't even get hairline scratch.
If I were to shatter the back of my N4, I would try to keep it just because, but I know myself too well. Given a week or two I'd order another back and repair it myself. Especially since there are so many guides on here, and elsewhere, that give step-by-step instructions on how to take the phone apart and replace parts. Most are written by people that did it themselves, too so they point out what to look for, where to be super careful, etc. If the front got more than hairline scratches, I would replace it immediately. I would stare at the scratch anytime I looked at my phone and would go insane if I didn't.
"Son, I noticed your screen is cracked. Are you using drugs?"
True that. I'm waiting for replacement parts for the white nexus to start becoming mainstream. That way I can just switch between the black, or white nexus 4 since that is the only difference with the phone is the back housing.
I worry about the youth sometimes...

Crack in my $550 Nexus 4?? Oh no my friend, I won't allow it... I'm waiting for the moment Rhino Shield or Sir Lancelot is able to meet production demand and will order screen protector from them to replace my current one. It's better to be safe than sorry
Have to say I'm with both camps. If I cracked it I'd be pissed off but at the same time as the phone cheap in comparison to other handsets I wouldn't be in a rush to repair it as I need it every day. If I could use another phone then I'd get it repaired (or do it myself).
It was only £289 to be honest...a £500+ phone would be a different story! I'm so anal about my phone I wouldn't break it in the first place, though!
Flip side, my best mate (who earns probably double what I do) has destroyed his iPhone but can't be bothered getting it fixed as it still works...

First of all, I feel like I got ripped off, this case is nothing but annoying, the flappy door always get in the way even when its flipped around to the back,
you think they would atleast have put a magnet on the door so it has another purpose as a smart cover, I feel like they rushed it, and it's barely worth 10$, let alone 19.99$+Shipping. I would rather have a 10$ leather or tpu case from ebay.
I wanted to state my opinion and get the forums opinion, how do you feel about it?

Not trying to be, but when you spend almost 30$ on something that is worth 7.99$, and is nothing but a bother, yea, im a tad bit mad, but not too much, just got annoyed and decided to make a rage thread about the case.
Not saying its trash but certainly isn't worth the price (prob worth like $15 shipped? Maybe $10 and $15-20 if it had a sleep function)
i saw a video review of it on Youtube a couple weeks ago and it looked cheap. Reminded me of a TPU case with a flap.
I'd buy it off you for $15 shipped.
Overall I like it, EXCEPT for one really annoying flaw: The hinge is WAY too stiff and it keeps trying to close itself if you fold it behind the device.

Hm, make it 19$, and ill ship it to you, and thats me loosing like 8-9$ in a day.
I'm surprised anyone bought it. The first time I looked at the Nexus 7 I quickly looked for accessories for it on the Google Play website, looked at the cover ... said NO, looked at the extra power adapter, said NO for the second time.
Everyone knows there would be a flood of covers and other things for the device in a short while.
It's a pos ripoff. Much better out there at half the price.

Can you just cut the flap off and use it like a tpu?

Maybe I should put some Elmers glue on mine, and sprinkle some glitter on it, or put some crazy eyes on it.
In hindsight (being what it is), Asus admitted that more of these sold than expected. The price reflects a premium on brand, and it was very plain what these were going to be like from the pictures. They looked like basic silicone with no added features, and they are. Asus said nothing about the sleep feature of the Nexus 7. There was no reason to believe that their cover would take advantage of it.
Had I bought one of these, I also would feel ripped off. Not by Asus or Google, but by my inability to hang on to my $20 based on the facts at hand.

Actually I kind of liked how it looked from the pictures - what the pictures don't show is how badly it handles trying to put the flap behind the device.

The look is nice, but what you bring up is what I immediately thought when I saw it for the first time. There's nothing to hold the cover back and it's not hinged in any way. Asus even had pictures of it splayed out on a flat surface. A video would have made it apparent for sure, and like I say... I could have been wrong at the time. I simply put my bet on the other color.
Did you watch the numerous video reviews on this forum that said the cover sucked balls before you bought it?

Glad I waited to see a review before rushing to buy to it.
http://www.autoomobile.com/news/lg-nexus-4-no-glitter/10010798/
The LG Nexus 4 has something special that we haven’t seen on other Android smartphones in a while now – great build quality.
New LG Nexus 4 sports a new rear case?
Ever since it was released, we’ve praised the pure Google phone for its exceptional build quality and styling that even rivals the likes of the iPhone 5. However we did have some complaints about rear glass that seem to be more fragile than we hoped.
Well there may be some bad news today disguised as something good. We’ve been informed by many readers who recently received their LG Nexus 4 that the smartphone looks a little different than what we saw last month. Supposedly, LG may have modified the rear crystal glass case of the Nexus 4 to make it less susceptible to cracking.
On a sad note, the LG Nexus 4 now doesn’t seem to glitter like the earlier batch. No matter what angle you hold it at or lighting conditions. it seems to have lost the glitter effect.
At this time this remains unconfirmed but give that we’ve had a dozen readers complain to us about their findings already, there may be something different about the newest batch ship from the Google Play Store.
We’ve contacted LG about this and will update this story once we get a reply on what is possibly a new LG Nexus 4.

I'm sure we'll get 3rd party back replacements. But still, this would suck huge monkey balls. I love the glass back.
excellent news. instead of a sparkly fragile discoball glass back we can have a sleek, plain black, more solid glass back
win-win in my book
I actually liked their original idea with the glittery back. But oh well if they did the back side more cracking safe then it should be OK.
if that makes them produce more quickly and fix the glitches then am for it
I ordered mine when they still had the glittery back, it looks very nice but I'd rather have a durable backing to my device.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
the glitter may seem nice but in my situation i will never see it with this phone case,
i dont care what the back looks like since i dont look at it when in use
would rather a tougher back so it won't look bad when its all scratched but shinny disco ball it is.
How does removing the glittery pattern make the glass more durable on the back? If I recall, the pattern is under the glass. So if they just removed what was under the glass, isn't it still the same glass?
Btw, if anyone has gotten one without the design, Id like to see some pics please. Just curious, want more than the one in the OP

No space in between the back and the glass. So I presume that the plastic can sit flushed against the back glass pane to provide more strength?
I placed my order about a month ago and should hopefully get it in the next few weeks.
From the devices I have seen, personally, I love the original back and would almost rather not have one if it did not have the back.
Call me crazy but from the first time I saw it, I wanted nothing more than to have the phone in a bumper case and show it off with pride.
I guess I will just wait to see what style of back others get that ordered the same time I did and decide if I want to sell it.

Some of you ppl make the dumbest leaps I have ever read.....Sparkle gone = stronger glass....just retarded.
I'm sorry, I have to vent. I guess I'm trying to set a record because I just broke my third N7 after having it out of the box for 10 minutes. My first N7 was dropped on concrete and the screen shattered, so it was understandable. I didn't have coverage on it so I had to pay for a new one. The only place that had them in stock was Staples, so I got the next one there and paid for accident coverage. The second was in my back pocket when I bent over and my butt put a little leverage on the screen and broke the digitizer (not the glass). I think it might have been defective because I remember feeling the screen pop slightly when I tapped it long before it finally broke.
Unfortunately, Staples coverage plan sucks. I sent it in and didn't hear from them so I called them after three weeks. Instead of shipping me a new one, they only gave me a $199 gift card to pay for the 16GB N7 I broke. And it could only be used in the store, not online, and now all the local Staples are always out of N7s, so I had to wait a week for them to be in stock. When they got them, they only got the 32GB, so I went ahead and paid $50 extra for it. After tax and a new coverage plan, I paid $133 out of pocket on top of the $199, so I was a little less than thrilled about the whole ordeal, but still glad to get another N7.
I got it home, sat down to root it and install a rom and I had it resting on my leg when I sneezed and it slid down my leg and came to rest on my shoe. I didn't even drop it, there certainly was no impact, it just slid down my leg and stopped on my shoe. No big deal, right? Nope, I picked it up and the screen looked sort of like TV static. After pushing the power button the screen went off and won't come back on. It's borked.
I love the N7 but this is ridiculous.
What you need to do is get an American Express card. They have this crazy benefit of unconditionally guaranteeing anything you buy using the card for a year.
I once bought a $250 camera using the card. Shortly after I took a fall when hiking on a steep slope. The camera was in a case clipped to my belt. My hip crushed that baby! Parts and pieces!
I called AMEX and related the story. I had heard the guarantee covers all losses - lost, stolen, or crushed! Sure enough, the person looked up the transaction, asked I send them an email describing my accident, and then credited the full price back to the card!
I buy all toys on the card now.

I'm 90% sure that the static screen is caused by the battery cable coming partially loose. Open up the back cover, carefully pull out the battery cable and then reconnect it. Let me know if that worked for you. I did a lot of searching when that happened to mine.

Those records, LOL, I would NOT be bragging about here or elsewhere - like others above posting said, how about a little bit more due diligence - protect your "investment" and get a non-slip, protective cover or case - and then, urrrrh, enclosed it with high-desensity foam for exta padding. It is a small trade-off for reducing ordinary wear & tear as well.
Given the high cost of repair & reported incidents, I reluctantly got accidental/breakage insurance for it, but it's still no fun to send it away for repair/exchange and wait for delivery after the claim is processed, etc. and live without the device for # of days (or weeks)
How the heck did you get it to fit in a back pocket of your pants? Those must be some mighty big pockets!
In fact, WHY would you put it in your back pocket?
In any case, this isn't a phone. Heck, I wouldn't even put my RAZR MAXX in my back pocket because that could DEFINITELY cause something to break.

Well the first time my 7 year old dropped it. I had only been letting her use it on the couch or carpet or other soft places but she grabbed it without me knowing and dropped it in the garage. As I said, I'm pretty sure the second one had a defect as the screen would pop when I pushed it, and the third time, I don't know what happened, the impact it suffered must have been miniscule.

In fact at the end of the warranty just claim that it took a swim or that it fell down the stairs and collect to buy the next best thing and keep the old one. Anyway the **** man?! If you want to go caseless, your best bet is to install something like the Skinomi full body shield. It should provide protection against scratch on the body.
get a clear case/bumper
I tried going caseless for sgs3, n2, and nexus 4.
Random scratches here and there. Not worth it!
So what If it scratches. You won't notice them when the screen is on anyway.
a pouch
I'm with you in that it seems a dreadful shame to cover up such a beautiful piece of design.
Personally my solution is to use a leather pouch - protected when I'm not using it and all it's caseless glory when I am

Same here, hate using cases for my phones. Went caseless with One X, then S3 then Note 2, Xperia Sola, then 4s, then Nexus 4, then back to One X (I know, I change phones a lot and now I'm planning to get the One ). What I did was buy those full body screen protectors, I used Zagg for the rear and sides, but used the Spigen ones on the screen so that I wouldn't even feel or see any screen protector on the screen.
I sold all my other phones (except N4 and Sola) near the real value I bought it because it still looks and feels so brand new and until now, none of my buyers have complained (I give them an opportunity to test the phones for a week first, if they need help with something, I help them to the best I can, and if they don't like the phone, I give them a full refund, but I ask for a free snack)

I've been fortunate enough to have not dropped my last 3 phones while caseless.
It used to happen when I would get out of the car, so now the phone is either in my pocket or in my hand when I get in/out of the car.
I always have a back screen protector so that the back won't scratch when it lays on the table.
Keys and change in right pocket, phone in left.
Other than that, keep a tight grip!

Does anyone have advice regarding going about using the HTC One without a case, naked and out in the world, without utterly destroying the phone due to scratches, dings and dents?
I pre-ordered my HTC One 64 gb on contract and Im considering selling it in december and buying whatever Nexus phone google is offering in november off contract, and judging by the nexus 4, the price point shouldnt be too bad.

yes buy a pouch
when its tucked away its protected, when you use it, its naked
best of both worlds

It's lovely naked, it's really is, people should have to pay to see it, it's like a peep show!
I'll be getting a pouch very, very soon... until then, I'm holding it like a baby!
This is the million dollar dilemma every time!
I HATE cases, the phone is designed to be held and felt as it is, not with a case that makes it twice the size (some don't I know...)
A pouch kind of helps here, but then if you are using the device and you drop it, I have yet to see a pouch that spots it has been dropped and quickly attaches itself to avoid damage

any recommandation on that?
Everyone saying use a pouch for when the phone is not in use lol. U do know the most damage done to a phone is from dropping it right? You can't drop a phone thats putaway. You can when you are holding it. So pouch doesnt actually make a difference.

its annoying when the screen is off.
your losing resale value of the device

It's scratch proof. I have a 1-year-old One X and it has maybe 2 micro scratches on the screen. Almost immaculate and the same as an Xperia on the second day. lol
Edit: Also not sure how could you dent/scratch a phone in your pocket?!

thats only semi true when you are carrying around taking it out from your pocket etc its always in the pouch
but if you drop while using it yes its true
so a pouch is kinda of half protection and protects against the element in pocket/ bag etc
I have one instance though a sharp object went inside the pouch I put my phone on... I'm not sure how many days it has been on the pouch but it scratched my phone like hell. I thought it was dust or something on my hands when it's dirty until I felt it when I was holding the pouch and meh! A little stone made it inside.
I recommend these. They aren't out yet for the One but should be soon. I used them on my One X for nine months and never had an issue. They are wet apply and shrink when dry so tightly that you can feel the raised lettering in the Beats logo. Their shiny though which may not appeal to every one.

Here's a One X with them on...

A lanyard would be good for preventing drops. Unfortunately, there is no obvious attachment point.

Kinda regret not getting a case now. Luckily everything still works, apart from an annoying buzzing when speaking on the phone. But my perfectionist OCD is kinda kicking in now!
Thinking about putting up with it until a new phone takes my fancy.
Anyone else had shatter experience? What did you do?
Sorry
Mods delete this, didn't realise there was a thread already.
i got one of those as well, two weeks ago. everything still works perfectly though. i still wont use a case or screen peotection.

Spiderman App xD
I bought an N5 off CL for $100 with a cracked screen and I've been looking to replace it. Appears to be pretty easy, but the new screen is going to run you about $100. I recommend getting a screen with the bezel instead of just the screen.

I second that. Cases are always ugly anyway. I'm careful enough with my phone that I don't really worry about it. Going on 8mo+ and haven't dropped it once yet...
At least the way I see it is like this: you get a case in order to keep the phone looking good and protected, but you never get to see what the phone looks like when there is a case around it, so what's the point of the case? haha

It's not always about looks. Some people need their phone to always be working and keeping it protected ensures that.

ive never used a case on any of my devices(since g1 days, and every nexus since). i did buy a case for my n4. i put it on and immediately took it off. i hate how they feel in the hand, it really bugs me. naked is still the way to go for me. and ive dropped my phones many times, but this was the first time in all those years that my screen actually broke. what sucks is that it was all my fault. i had it in my lap(sitting on a bench at night), then stood up forgetting it was there. face down on the concrete it went. by now though, i forget that it did break. its in such a place that doesnt bug me, and the cracks arent visable with the screen on.
I have 2 mains cracks on the top and bottom. Plus a spider crack on the right side. Luckily its a tempered glass screen protector. I'll agree with Simms that I hate the feel of a case, for the most part, but I refuse to go anywhere without one. You can't predict life. Back when I got a shiny new GNex, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident which resulted in the phone getting chucked from the front of the car, out the passenger window and right into a cement divider. I spent like 10 minutes in the car looking for it before I decided to go find a house to call 911 when I saw it. It was wearing an Otterbox commuter case and it survived for the most part, minus the screen.
IDK, I bought my phone from T-Mobile on a payment plan. Technically speaking, I don't even fully own my N5 yet. So I'm not going to let anything happen to it. When I'm in my home I keep it in my Ringke Fusion case. It's a little lighter so it's okay for just in house for a drop if I'm careless. When I go out though, I put it in my Neo Hybrid case. I have the Nillkin 9H anti explosion tempered glass screen protector on at all times. I actually owned the protectors and cases before my N5 came in. My phone hasn't been naked since I got it, really. Got a spare glass screen protector as well. Once this one gets too cracked to offer any real protection it'll get replaced, but for now the cracks are minimal. When I retire my Nexus 5 it will be in as good condition as when I got it (if I have anything to say about it).
Cracked screens annoy the piss out of me. I use a thick ass battery case(zerolemon) not a big fan of this brick but its quite nice having ability to charge phone especially since N5 has a mediocre battery

The ol' "forgot I set it down on my lap and stood up" situation. I see this happening to people on almost a daily basis stepping out of their cars. There's also the "random stranger bumping the phone out of your hand" which can be quite unexpected.
Every time I drop my phone even with a case or not, I have a mini heart attack. I know my case will protect it and I know that the Nexus 5 has a durable screen and needs a pretty hard fall to break but it's that 000.1 percent chance that I'll pick it up after a nasty fall one day and have a small crack.
Seeing a stupid comment on Google Play about an app you love and marking it as "spam". You've done it too.
My screen broke about 2 weeks ago... very upsetting. I thought about getting a screen and doing the job myself, but I figured it would be best, for me, to have LG do it.
Unfortunately, they are rather slow. They got it one week ago today, and it's not expected to be delivered to my house until Tuesday. So a total of 14 days since I mailed it back to them.
Just keep that in mind if you plan to have them fix it... The only phone I had from before is an old flip phone.. which works, but very, very limiting compared to a N5. lol
OP, I feel for ya. If that happened to me; I would have a bad day too!
However, there is a thread dedicated to people having bad days here: Post your broken Nexus 5 thread
Feel free to drown in your sorrow with the other unfortunate members.
