hi i just updated my phone to Indian firmware. but i find it to be very slow and laggy as compared to gb. I've read that doing factory reset and erasing cache will make the phone faster, but as i don't want to lose my data and
get no results. i really want to know is that erasing cache make phone any faster? also how to erase caches. I would also like instructions on how to do that. and should i flash any other kernel, as im ready to root my phone?
It is recommended to factory reset and clear cache if you're coming from gb as gb to jb is quite a big update. It will clear things up for clean installation. You can do this by:
1) Switch off your phone.
2) Enter recovery mode by pressing power+home+vol up.
3) Navigate to factory reset/wipe data. Clear it. Press power button to select.
4) Navigate to wipe cache partition. Clear it.
5) Reboot. Done.
This will not delete all pic/music/vid you have either on ext or internal. It will clear all apps, contacts and messages. Export contacts to ext sd before wiping. For messages, you can backup using sms backup & restore app on GPlay. Just install back the app after wipe to restore.
Hope this helps.

For rooting and Installing custom kernel, Look at the JB guide thread By Maniac.shri which has links to all tutorials. You can find it on the general thread

OK, just a quick background:
I have a G1,
running Amon_ra's Recovery Image
CyanogenMod-4.2.13
OK, so I love Amon-Ra's recovery because it makes all the maintenance things very easy. Wiping the Dalvik Cache is a quick task.
Here's my question: When folks on here say they wipe every month of so, or wipe before each new Cyanogen update, do they mean wiping everything? SD card reformat etc? Or do they just wipe certain things?
I had never wiped before 4.2.13, and found each Cyanogen release more sluggish and crashy than the last. Then I wiped, installed 4.2.12, and it ran like a brand new phone. I loved it. But now a couple weeks has passed and my phone is slowing again. I tried wiping the Dalvik Cache but didn't see any real improvement.
So do I need a full wipe to get things back to speedy? It seems like a big pain in the ass to have to reinstall all my apps, reset notification tones, etc every time the phone gets slow. Is this the case, or is the general term "wiping" refering to a lesser operation?
Thanks for any help,
Tony
It is easy to backup the apps with the command 'pull' in adb, then use the command 'push' to push them back and the phone will install them.
I would just bite the bullet and redo your settings. I know there are programs like backup for root users that will redo the settings, but I have had problems with it and would rather reappy the settings myself.
One other option to try first: download "Cachemate" from the market. It's a paid app but so worth the buck.
The app clears all the temp caches - you would be amazed at how much memory is taken up by the caches as apps run. And the apps often don't release those caches even after reboots.

You can also do it manually by going "setings->apps->app management->select the app, then wipe cache" And sure it will take longer, but hey, for me it is one of the joys of using a phone, actually performing those tasks.
As for wiping, in ArmonRA, wipe data, wipe dalvick, wipe ext, then go to sd partion option, and repair ext, then wipe data one last time. That is the proper way to do a full wipe with ArmonRA.
As for wiping at home, I like Charmin Ultra Soft.

LOL! and for the thread, when they say rewipe, they don't mean to reformat your whole sdcard. That would be such a pain. You just gotta wipe the ext, (if you have partitions on your sd card), Cache, and data.
-EDIT-
Oh wait he already said that..
I am extremely frustrated at this point so I have decided to make a thread.
My hero has been a good phone and runs 1.5/1.6 roms without any problems, and has for 6+ months. However, as soon as the 2.1 leaks came around, I was eager to try them. NONE of them will work. I have tried 6 or 7 different versions. My phone will shut off very frequently, which essentially makes it unusable.
Has anyone else experienced this and was able to fix it, or otherwise have any advice for me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haha. Yeah man, factory reset + dalvik cache wipe. Would a bad SD card cause something like this?
sounds like you didn't properly wipe... once you wipe EVERYTHING.. (after a nandroid).. you shouldn't have problems installing any ROM whether it be 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 4.2 (coming to the htc hero6 in 2013)
edit: you mentioned factory reset... are u doing the factory reset thats installed in the settings menu or are you wiping everything from recovery?
Have you tried to go back to 1.5/1.6 to see if the problem occurred? This might help eliminating the hardware issue.
Which ROM did you tried? The latest one that I ran which is stable (no over clocking) is Fresh 2.1.1, look for this thread title "[ROM] 05/14/10 | Fresh Rom 2.1.1 | Official Sprint RUU + The normal fresh rom goodies"
I have always do this when installed the new ROM.
-Back up all your private apps (not system apps) with Android Commander (search the forums) to your PC.
-Use Recovery and wipe the followings:
1. Wipe Factory / Data reset
2. Wipe Dalvik cache
3. Wipe EXT partition
4. Wipe Battery Stat
Trust me this will save you a lot of hassle and time.
- Re-Installed all your Apps from Scratch using Adroid Commander. This always work best for me. I found less problem and less time consuming doing it this way.
Most of my problems occurred when I am too lazy to WIPE and install new ROM on top of the OLD one with out wiping dalvik and ext partition. An this make it more time consuming.
That's my experience. Hope this help.

Couple of questions. Is wiping the ext partition wiping your SD card? Also, how do I wipe the battery stat? I just booted to my recovery mode but I didn't see that as an option. Maybe I need a new flashrec or something?

what recovery rom are u running? and no wiping the ext partition is not wiping your SD card... just the partition you created..
dont wipe the battery but wipe the sd ext.
the sd ext only wipes what apps you have installed when you partition your sd card. it doesn't remove music, picutres, etc...

The one I am using now is overclock. But the previous one that I used is "recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2-blue.img"
You might have the older version. Battery Stat Wipe is just reference for me every time I using a new ROM to see how the battery life is.
As mentioned above, wipe EXT partition will not wipe any pictures or data on the FAT32 of the SD card.
im having a similar issues i cant get my phone to stop restarting. ive wiped everything you can even repartitioned and it sill does it.
are we doing somehting wrong?
i have a thread i started not seeing this one.

check the hardware
As someone suggested, please be sure to rollback to 1.6 to rule out a hardware problem.
I have a battery -- one of four in rotation -- that consistently reboots the phone after it draws down to 80% or so. This is probably the battery that I misplaced and didn't use for a few months. Before I pinned the problem down to this particular battery, I thought 2.1 was haywire, rebooting all the time. Once I pulled the battery out of rotation 2.1 became relatively stable again.
I am looking for a definitive way to COMPLETELY wipe a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000. I mean the equivalent of doing a full factory restore on a PC. I've noticed that no matter how many times I flash or factory reset that there are still remnants that remain. Files like the license for Titanium Backup, or just miscellaneous files. Is there a way to completely wipe the SD card clean first, then do a fresh flash? I really would like to know that the SD card is completely clean since I've flashed 3-5 different versions of firmware and not one has been stable. I just want a real fresh slate.
Please advise.
Thanks.
setting>privacy>factory data reset. thats what i do...im assuming its a clean sweep.
If you have an sd card you have to reformat that as well.

This will not format internal SD. After "factory data reset" you'll need at least to format this one as well.
Sounds like the OP wants to return the phone
Ha, ha. Not even! This is the best phone I've owned to date when it's working properly. I am tired though of it crashing on me. I'll notice I'm not getting calls or email, then I check it and the phone has shut off. I'm also tired of flashing it every week, and spending days trying to get it back to the state I like it. (I wish there were better cloning apps that saved ALL of the settings including how you have the home screens set up, and all system preferences. It sucks having to reconfigure 10 email accounts, among other things.) I'm thinking if I can wipe it and start totally fresh it will help.
Glad to hear that, that's the spirit!
it just that recently we've been getting quite a few anti SGS fans in the mix, and many people are returning their phones.
Yeah, I have no intention of sending back my SGS. The good far outweighs the short list of negative items; those only being lack of flash and a poor battery life.
I just want a stable system! I'm going to keep searching for a fix.
out of the box i performed a full wipe by doing this *2767*3855# (this code applies to all samsung models i think). HTH.

thank you sir.
Is there a difference between these three ways of reseting?
odin
best way is odin
do the full odin re-partition with pit
then flash the 3 files.
but you will still need to go into recovery and format the internal sd as pictures will still be safe on the internal sd.
What if you mount the phone as a storage device and "rm -rf" the sd-card(s) ?
Windows users could use cygwin...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You may try rebooting your phone and while rebooting holding volume up, home, and power until you enter the factory menu mode. From there select "Format internal SD". That may be what you're looking for?

Hope that this helps!
Same problem in wiping Galaxy Tab
Hello,
I am also completely unable to wipe it properly. downloaded apps (like amazon shopper) remain and function even after formatting internal SD storage, and wiping it like 10 times.
Very disappointing.
Any suggestions more than welcome.
Thanks.
as mentioned above.
boot into recovery > mounts and storage > format system / cache / data / datadata/ sd card.
also do a factory reset, then wipe the dalvik cache.
flash rom thru odin with all 3 files and PIT
that will leave phone completely EMPTY
i thought the factory reset in the CWM should be fine

I have done that with the phone and its really empty cause it wont even start haha so what do i do now? how can i install somethin on it?
Personally I copy everything from my internal sd card on my pc into a samsung folder with that days date.
Then I then delete everything off the internal sd card.
From there I boot into recovery & format sd card. Then I do a factory reset, clear cache, clear dalvik cache and thats it. Everything gone. Now at least if I discover there is something I need missing I have it ready on my pc.
This saved me when I flashed an ICS Rom & lost my IMEI number. There it was sitting on my pc ready to go.
If you have flashed with Odin using the 3 files & the pit file with re-partition checked I've found that I often end up with the phone not starting. Usually a 2nd flash with the 3 files without the PIT file and re-partition unchecked and my phone is then fine.
So when switching between themes, what is the best method to do so?
I feel like sometimes I have to reflash the rom that I was running. I also read on here that wiping fixes stuff, but I'm not quite sure what is the best way to clean off any changes other than flashing a rom that wipes the /system.
Buy titanium back up, back up all of your apps with it. Wipe dalvik cache from recovery, wipe cache partition, fix permissions, flash theme. If it gives you trouble then you factory reset, repeat above steps, restore apps via titanium backup. No issues.
Hi guys I'm new to this forum but i've been a CD-ROM for years...
I have question about upgrading ViperROM to 6.2.1
I'm currently using ViperROM 2.7.0 with sense 5.0
Android 4.2.2
I use Titinium Pro to backup all my apps and....
my question is....how to upgrade from 2.7 to 6.2.1 the easiest way?
without any data lost?
do i have to use the data backup from ROM or i can just use the titaniumPRO for full backup?
please advice
I always copy and paste the contents of the sdcard to a folder for safe keeping on my laptop or usb drive. I wipe, data, cache, dalvik cache, system and user partitions. Reboot recovery, use adb sideload to send the rom.zip over and flash. Setup the phone and copy and paste everything back. The whole process takes min. 25-30 minutes. Works for me /shrugs, just my 2 pennies.
I would follow @DeathAngel66669 advice it is very solid. I also use Titanium Pro to quickly add back my USER APPS only with data. Never restore system apps.

I'm just concerning about my User App data, (whatsapp image, convo history)
so i can just do titanium pro and wipe the phone? cool!
Whatsapp etc backs up it's own data to a folder in your internal storage, when you reinstall it and set it up it will say backup found would you like to restore. Just make sure you don't wipe internal storage.
You could also try and dirty flash as you are on viper one already, just go into advanced wipe and wipe your caches only, do not factory reset and when installing the Rom also select don't wipe data partition.
But again as the others have said, make sure it's backed up first, if a dirty flash doesn't work, you'll be left with no choice but to reflash and wipe along the way.
