[Q] USB OTG functionality - Sony Xperia T, TL, TX, V

Hopefully someone can help, my Xperia T seems not to have any USB OTG functionality. I've tried 2 different OTG cables and there is no response from the phone. Any ideas?
Otherwise USB appears to be working fine.
Many Thanks.

Yes, version 1.
I tried plugging a Fat32 formatted stick in and it did actually recognise and start to prepare (to mount?) something, however it then said disconnected unexpectedly and is back to doing nothing.
edit: I've ordered a better quality otg cable, otherwise a I think it is the socket on the phone. (But surely that would effect the standard data cable also?)

I've used several usb devices with my phone. My experience is that some thumb drives draw troop much power. The phone should display a warning about this but it might well be this is the cause of your problem. You could try hooking it up to a powered usb hub, that should always work. I connected a thumb drive, mouse and keyboard simultaneously that way.

I just received a Nokia CA-157 cable, and a USB stick I tried previously just mounted without problems.
So I guess the moral of the story is buy one $2 adaptor instead of two $1.5 ones!
Thank You for any advice

i tried 2 otg cables with my xperia T
both cables were of nokia
it always shows a usb power consumption error and it gets disabled
does anyone know why ?

I believe the Xperia T will only give 300ma before complaining, most devices will ask for 500ma upon connection.
Use a powered usb hub to solve this.
A passive hub may also bypass the power check but I guess you risk drawing too much current from your phone.

Try using different usb pen drive's....
Some bigger sized sticks will show error in power consumption.... So use pen drive which is smaller in size and consumes low power....
I have two pen drives , one connects perfectly and other will show error....

No you dont need to be rooted, but we need to know the state of your phone before we can help you. Secondly, rooting the phone is VERY easy, it takes about 30 seconds and involves clicking about 2 buttons. Search for bin4ry root many android and read that thread.

also, for the usb otg thing... i am planning to buy a hard drive that says is usb 3.0 do you think a normal usb host cable and android phone can detect it?? all these technology stuff are so complicated....
btw thank you soooo much for helping me with that question... it has been annoying me for a lonnnnng time already..

Yes, rooting is that easy.
TX and T are very similar, only a few differences.
I suspect that an external hard drive would need some other power supply than just what it can pull from the usb on a phone.
As has been said before, I have two pendrives, one works the other fails, so the limit of USB voltage is quite low.

well the USB is two way so theoretically it should work right?
That's what I was thinking...

If you try this, can you report if it's possible to charge through this while mounting sdcard or using USB. I haven't got the Nexus 7 yet, and will only consider it if it's possible to charge while using usb host. But i'm curious about being able to use external storage and charging at the same time, cause i want a 7" tablet to replace the screen in my car.
I tried to read in the other threads about external storage, and quite a few is asking about this as well, but i haven't been able to find an answer to the question.

That doesn't work with my galaxy note since the reader can only read from 1 source at a time (e.g. It can't read sd card and usb at the same time). I also tried plugging the reader into my note's micro usb port and plugging the charging cable into the reader's micro usb port and it does not charge the phone.
Havn't tried it on the n7 since I havn't got around to rooting it yet to use with stickmount but I reckon the results will be the same.

Thanks for the reply!
I think the only possible solution for this might be an OTG-Y cable
Found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p10LgZFIawo
Which might work, the question is just if the Nexus 7 accepts it. Anyhow, in his description he writes that it's to power connected USB elements, but in the video he claim that the tablet is charging.
Why doesn't someone make this into a dock with a back?
Then you could have a memory card installed, connected to a keyboard/mouse, and power. Then you could just dock the N7 and have access to all that.
that would be sweet
does it work then?

I wasn't going to bother rooting cause there was nothing I needed that the device didn't have as in but looks like I now have a reason to go read the rooting tutorial I saw somewhere around here
Looks like there is a chance that my wish has been granted so i will be able to charge and use microUSB as OTG at the same time.

Hope so
Note: I haven't looked for a solution for this for quite a while, but last time i checked it seemed as a kernel hack was needed.
With this thing I can just watch video and music that I have on the card directly, I don't need to transfer it to the device or anything right?
Sidenote, will the nexus 7 show up with a drive letter when I plug it into my computer after rooting??

i didn't think the N7 could support power and OTG
You want it for video or audio? You could try a wifi solution for audio. Or be the guy that gets the pins to work.
there is NO data and charge at the same time. This is due to how the device switches from charge to usb mode thru the pin 4 . it senses rather a data cable or charge cable is being used . will not charge via otg..
there are several threads with experiments trying to get this work .You could use a wifi or bluethooth drive for data...
I have no clue what im doing but this is what im playing with at the moment. Its a old dock for sgs2 i believe but it has a dc and usb input on the back of it.

Would get the cheaper one but the juiced one has a flexible cable vs the fixed usb on the other one. Would this be pointless though?
Unfortunately OTG sends ground up the sense pin to trigger host mode. Once activated it sends 5V DOWN the USB cable to power your USB devices. Trying to send voltage up the cable at the same time to the Nexus would not be a good idea. The only way around it I can think of would be to hack the firmware to only activate the data pins in host mode and keep the power circuit seperate, then you could power the USB device from a modified dock/hub which sends power up the USB cable to the device.
A lot of work, and without the powered hub, OTG would be useless!
In the long run wouldn't it be easier to just plug in the power lead when needed and have the otg in the rest of the time? (or vice versa). It would mean you having to have easy access to the usb port but I can't see an easy non technical solution to connecting both at once.
Don't use the Nexus 7 for a car install. You can get an Acer Iconia A100 with a full-size USB port to connect to whatever external storage solution you want, and it's usually about the same price or cheaper than the Nexus 7.

Same principle. In normal OTG host mode the tablet powers the peripherals. A USB keyboard/mouse will be no exception to that.

Ofcourse there is charge and otg at the same time by just simply shorting pins 4 and 5 with a resistor,in my case for xperia p , a 100k resistor does it.
Timurs USB ROM from another site is what you want. Has links and everything you need.

Nexus 7 OTG + charging is here

It says it's only been tested with CM10, but might also work with other ROMs. I finally got my Y cable, and I can confirm it works. [Using this cable from ebay, $6]
http://mehrvarz.github.com/otg-power-nexus7.html
This means you can plug in your flash drive or hard drive and use it while on AC power!
Update: for 4.2.x check this dedicated thread over on rootzwiki: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-robust-usb-host-power-management/
Big thanks to XDA member t1mur and rootzwiki Timur for making the kernel!
This is awesome, just need to find a y-cable to try this out. Just hope its a stable kernel that doesn't cause any issues.
This is a great step in the right direction! Can't wait to see where this goes..

I don't think so for 2 reasons. Usually even powered usb hubs don't give out power through the input port [The source port of the hub]. And even if it did, it would be 500 mAh [the N7 charger is 2000 mAh], which [edit:] isn't enough enough to charge the N7 with the screen on. If the screen is off though, it will slowly charge it.
Also, apparently this is already implemented in Faux's beta kernel, you have to use echo to enable it [it's explained on the thread].
i am getting the 16GB. i am tired of waiting. I have one last question though. Can this in any way cause any type of damage on my device?
It's allow usb and AC charging or only usb ?
Awesome news, even though I just bought a regular OTG cable about a week ago for a $1.50 (still waiting for it to be delivered from China to the USA [NJ]). Since I just got a full-time job I'm going to sell my 8 GB and get one of the 32 GB versions when they become available so I won't have to worry about the extra cable
Can anybody confirm that it effectively works ?
Also, It would be good to to know:
- which Y-USB-OTG cable is used ?
- which power source, i.e. from a PC (500 mA) or a charger (2 A) ?
Huh? I have this already in my kernel for a while now... This is NOT something new

Can you tell us some details ?
I am a little confused. The link says...
When a host mode adapter was recognized, charging of USB slave devices will NOT be activated and instead vbus will be raised in order to accept external charge.
If I want to use something that requires external power like a usb thumb drive, and the charging of usb slave devices is not activated; where does the slave device get the power to function? Is that shared off of the Y cable?
I know exactly what your talking about I have one for my old touchpad, ill try it on my nexus 7 see if it works.

Excited!
Can't wait for this! I'll be staying on top of this topic for awhile.
Alright I tried it using stock rooted using motleys kernel and while I could use a powered usb hub with 2 storage devices and a keyboard It wouldn't charge the N7 simultaneously. Although it didn't drain any power from the device either. Now this could be because of what I'm running or even one of the cords since I won't have a chance till the morning to test a couple more scenarios. All in all it definitely should be possible but may require a different kernel/rom etc. Though the OP asked the question regarding doing it w/o cm10 so ill try and stay within those parameters. On the touchpad I used to do it with cm9, as it was necessary especially with that device mostly only working with its 2amp charger. The reason I would only question cords used is I had previous trouble with an older kindle cable and when I tested it on a device I needed 1.5a it was hovering around 1.35a using my multimeter. Which was causing my Touchpad not to charge because it requires alot of power to charge. Ill update you on any progress and see I'f I can find the link foe the Ycable which I got on amazon awhile back.

I just read the code for the patch, its definitely looking like it will rely on the kernel as atleast in cm, USB slave charging mode needs to be suspended when recognized as host adapter. Regardless, I believe another Dev already implemented this and I'm sure others will.

Yeah. Now I'm toying with the idea of mounting a network share from a NAS-enabled router and put that in that in the car instead...effectively freeing up the USB port for full normal charging. I don't really like this route though because I suspect waiting for the router to boot every time the car is started will slow things down.

[Q] USB2 HDD and/or keyboard on KFHD7?

I know the KFHD7 can't power things plugged into the micro USB but assuming a USB hub or power from another source just having the data cable plug into it should work, right? Damn, lack of USB OTG support is a real shame, I was hoping to use the KFHD7 as a portable media centre/laptop replacement but it might be impossible by the sound of it.
One thing i forgot to mention is that my KFHD7 is modified with TWRP and CM 10.1, runs really smooth compared to the stock software. But is USB OTG stillnot possible like it was on the original Kindle Fire? Seeing as this newer one uses a second bootloader and all.

I had it for my old Atrix for HDD's and it's needed 2A. For standard keyboard+mouse and some usb stick You wont need more than standard 1A, 4 port USB hub for max 10$. I paid 12$ for 2A powered. I don't remember brand but before I used 1A powered "no name" brand and it worked too so use any min 1A powered and it should work.
