[Q] CWM recovery won't mount SD (and other problems) - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While trying to get a new ROM I installed CWM recovery and it can't mount the SD card to install update.zip for CWM and the new ROM. The Jelly Bean OS I have installed won't boot (it says that it has unfortunately stopped working) so I can't put anything on my internal memory.
Any ideas?

You need to flash JB with Odin first, if you was on GB. Then you can install custom JB ROM. And you need to repartition SD card if nothing is visible in CWM from it. For that read this thread. You need to use USB Mass storage to mount SD card, and be able to do that.
And if you got JB before instaling ROM, you need to do Factory reset in recovery. Probably that cause that "unfortunately stopped working".
P.S. What CWM you used, temp one? Use stock recovery, and root phone. Than use Frapeti's universal kernel flasher (it is in develeper section of I9070), and flash CoCore 6.2 (unpack it first and use kernel.bin.md5).

It was on Jelly Bean before doing anything. I tried factory reseting multiple times and it didn't work. I'm using CWM recovery 5.8.1.5.
So if I can't get into the OS and recovery doesn't work, what's my first step? Will Odin recognize my phone?
Thanks
Edit: never mind, it just worked. I don't really understand how and thank you for your help.

Use CWM that is integrated in kernel, like CoCore 6.2 kernel. You used temporary CWM?

[Q] CF-ROOT 3.7 JVI only standard recovery

Hi,
I flashed CF-Root-XW_DBT_JVI-v3.7-CWM3RFS, which worked fine and I have root access now.
But my problem - actually I dont know if its a problem - is:
I cannot boot into CWM Recovery using the 3button method.
I can successfully boot into CWM Recovery using the CWM Manager app.
The reason why I am asking:
I want to flash [ROM][ICS][4.0.3][BUILD23][BETA2.02]AOKP.
And in the instructions they are mentioning:
--COMING FROM STOCK ROMs/SAMSUNG BASED ROMS-
[..]
*WHILE FLASHING THE PHONE WILL END UP IN A BOOTLOOP, NO PROBLEM.
*SWITCH OFF BY REMOVING BATTERY.
*REBOOT INTO RECOVERY.
*REFLASH .

So I tried whether I can boot into CWM recovery using the 3-button method.
I saw on the CF-root thread for SGS2, that it only boots standard recovery, if there exists a samsung package (What is meant with package? firmware?).
But on the SGS thread chainfire writes:
- Booting into recovery will immediately give you CWM. The standard recovery is completely gone.

So I dont know if its an error, that I cannot boot into CWM with the 3button method,
or if its ok, because I still have the stock Samsung ROM running.
Thanks for your help!
Georg
I solved the problem. Maybe it helps someone.
I flashed AOKP Beta 2.02 and the SGS didnt end up in a boot loop!
It just booted into Semaphore CWM and from there I flashed AOKP again->Reboot->Finished.
During installation I had another problem: I put the AOKP zip onto the external/real SD-card. When the SGS booted into CWM after the first flash, the SD Card wasnt mounted But thanks god, the 3-button method still started the standard recovery mode, and I could reflash the original Samsung firmware using Odin.
I then re-rooted the phone and started the whole process again, but this time storing the AOKP zip on the internal SD-card

[Q] rom manager recovery mode

Hi guys,
posting here as i've tried searching and nothing comes up (anything that does has out dated download links or just doesnt apply)
Problem: after rooting my phone when i try to use rom manager, nothing happens. I've bout CWM touch, I've downloaded the normal CWM but when i try to either load cyanogen from the zip on my sd card it does nothing, it prompts me to back up, wipe etc but then when it says it will boot to recovery nothing happens. Also tried other apps to reboot and none of them work
any advice on this?
I've seen a cmd prompt set of instructions for Superoneclick, but im lost as to the getting to the directory through cmd tool.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi , if you have CWM touch, install QtADB on your computer => http://qtadb.wordpress.com/download/
reboot recovery from menu
or install android sdk and in a command prompt : adb reboot recovery
or at reboot OB, press G-key
Did you flashed recovery? First option in rom manager.
Trolling in the deep
yep clicked the first option, the prompt for the device comes up, i hit it, then the bar loads... then "succes".
then when i try to install from SD card nothing happens
Thankyou YkZ_1967 !!! However I installed qtADB and got reboot recovery, but it just reset the phone. Any ideas?

that's depend what you want to do, if you install custom rom, reboot in recovery, wipe data/cache / dalvik , then install zip from sdcard and choose your rom, then after success flash, reboot now.
I want to install cyanogen but when i try to load from sd card in rom manager it wont go into boot recovery.
when i managed to get it to boot recovery in the way you suggested it only reset the phone.
I feel like i'm missing something, did not think it would be this difficult

That means actually no cwm recovery installed yet so it will reset your phone everytime you want to enter recovery mode. This is the best thing you should do : reroot your phone like in this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487105. It will automatically installing cwm recovery touch. After that, you can go to recovery mode by using quick boot (download it from playstore). Therefor, you can start flashing roms, but remember don't use rom manager, coz it wont detect your cwm recovery touch and forcing you to flash the non-touch cwm recovery.

follow the method with smartflashtools and v20.x patched with cwm touch by SnegovikRZN , then you have OB rooted with CWM Touch, you will be able to install CM7 and unbrick your phone.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Got it to work that way all i had to do was flash that then clear data/wipe cache/wipe dalvik and then load from sd card and it works! very happy now
how can I boot into recovery , from a turned off phone

after you try to install zip from SD card and fails, check to see if it shows: error can't mount /sdcard. or something like that. ???
if it syas so. try a different recovery like TWRP, i was having a problem, similar to what you describe, an hour ago while rooting and flashing my mother's in law OB, i flashed the CWMT recovery and for some reason it couldn't load the ZIP from SD and it showed this error, so i flashed TWRP recovery and then it was fine, i manage to flash marvel rom and all was good.
hope it helps.

you are right, but i had a problem, the CWM was flash and ob went into CWM recovery mode, but for some reason it stated an error that it cannot mount /sdcard, so i tried via recovery menu to mount sd card, didnt work, then i tried again to flash a different version of CWM, same error, then i went and flshed TWRP and it worked.
i wonder if its a specific OB bug, bcoz this problem happen on my mother in law OB and on my OB it was rooting and flashing just fine, exactly like the guide.

Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2 issue - SD card not getting mounted - and solution

After upgrading my phone to CM 10 and installing ROM Manager 5.0.2.1 (which
includes Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2), I had a problem in that nothing could be
installed because the SD card was not being mounted.
There was no way of downgrading Clockworkmod Recovery because nothing would
get installed.
After numerous methods, I solved this by paying for the premium version of ROM Manager.
Once that was done, I got the option of reverting back to an earlier version of Clockworkmod Recovery from
within ROM Manager. I chose (arbitrarily) version 5.0.0.0 and now the problem has gone away.

Weird, I did the same with the free version, downgraded to 5.2.something (that I had working before) and its working correctly.
In summary: DO NOT INSTALL THE v6, usb mounting does not work... yet

But if you're making a backup on CWM6 and you want to restore on CWM5 it won't work. The backups in CWM6 are a lot smaller and diferent from previous vers

Actually, you can change the way that CWM recovery backs up your system so in fact maybe by changing the back up method, you can restore CWM6 back ups on CWM5. This includes difference compression methods, file type, etc
Just FYI, you don't have to buy Rom Manager Premium to downgrade your recovery image. The 'free' way would be to inject it into a kdz file and extract AP and CP binaries then flash with SFT.

[q] galaxy note froze during a jelly bean upgrade. Internal memory corrupt. Bricked?

hey guys
my sister was attempting to flash a jelly bean rom on her galaxy note which was running a stock ICS rom at the time and it froze during the process it froze.
it now shows a yellow triangle and refuses to boot.
i attempted booting into recovery and flashing a new rom.
i tried to do a full wipe first, but the phone freezes. i booted into recovery mode again and cleared the cache. however when i tried to wipe the davlik cache, i got an error message but it proceeded anyway.
when i try to go ahead and flash the new rom it fails.
i suspect the internal memory is corrupt. what should I do?

You might be able to repartition the device with Odin, you will have to wait for a more experienced member of XDA though, I don't know all the steps to repartition the device andI wouldn't like to get your Note in worse condition. But even after repartitioning you will only be able to run slim ROM's - such as slim bean.

Thanks for the help. I'll try repartitioning. I don't know how so I'll google it. But even stock roms wouldn't run? and what's a slim rom?
Basically a very lightweight ROM. Slim Bean is only about 95MB + 25MB for the google apps which you have to flash too.
Here is a link to the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060391
You might also be able to run slim versions of TouchWiz (that is the what you get from Samsung). SlimWizz is about 187MB but that will probably be too much.
That may be a softbrick "only". Are you able to get into Download mode? (Volume Down + Home + Power button) If so, you'll be able to flash an official ROM with PC Odin.
Out of curiosity, what procedure did you follow to flash your Jelly Bean ROM? Directly from the stock ICS recovery?

I guess you have flashed the Speedmod kernel/recovery. Then internal (emmc) and external (micro SDcard) are swapped (that's "normal"). So formatting emmc will format the external SD card and formatting external sd-card will format the internal storage. You just need to be aware of this (if you fear you might lose your data in your SD card, simply remove it from the phone before wiping).
Do a full wipe and then follow the procedure detailed in the thread of the ROM you want to flash. Or if you don't know what to do, just get into Download mode as I explained above and flash an official TouchWiz ROM through Odin PC (you can check Dr Ketan's thread here: everything is nicely detailed. Don't forget to hit the Thanks button on his first post as he's really helpful with people).

That sucks. It seems you've been a victim of the emmc_CAP_ERASE bug. It's a shame you don't remember how you came to this. Anyway, one of the best solutions in this situation is to send your Note to the service center. The problem here is you have that yellow triangle which will void your warranty (if you still have one). Unless someone has a better idea, I think you have 3 possibilities:
1) Use the PIT file method. That will partition your internal storage card. Don't hesitate to ask questions in the thread if you need. You'll find people to help you.
2) Use a JIG USB key to remove the triangle before sending your device to the service center for repair. You'll find one for a few euros on eBay.
3) Try the JTAG.
To be honest, I haven't tried any of these methods as I've always been careful when flashing stuff. Good luck!

Clockworkmod Recovery Galaxy s3 problems

Well guys this is my first time on the forums. My phone is rendered near useless right now. A few days ago, i rooted my phone via towelroot. as a friend reccomended, i installed ROM manager and flashed clockworkmod recovery. I backed up my stock, perfect ROM with CWM and decided to try installing cyanogenmod 10.3.1......... it wouldn't install. I even tried other apps like ROM installer. Then i came across the handy dandy Cyanogenmod Installer. This seemed great, i didn't have to do anything except click a few buttons on my PC. as i was ready to enjoy a new custom ROM, the following message popped up, "Root access possibly lost. Fix?". I was given the options of "No" and "Yes - Fix root (/system/xbin/su)". i chose the second one, and waited for my device to boot. when it did, it was stock Touchwiz Android version 4.4.2, just like i had initially. what's more is my imei and bandwidth version were both "unknown" and i my sim card was undetected. I decided that technology had gotten the better of my and i tried to flash my old stock ROM back on. i found the file in recovery mode but it kept saying "no files found" whenever i clicked on it. I tried the cyanogenmod installer again, this time choosing "No", resulting in exactly the same scenario. At this point, I would be fine having the stock ROM since i have had such bad luck with the "developer's world" of Android.......... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

it´s the best if you also do a format of internal sd in recovery before changing the recovery, because sometimes there are some folders left of it in interrnal memory and you cant delete it, do that if this will be the case. but i think Philz and CWM use same folder, so if you flash philz it will be okay if im correct otherwise you can always format internal sd afterwards
Edit: dont use rom manager for recovery actions, use recovery itself, much more reliable
