Hello forum:
Im a doctor resident in training so i dont know a lot of the technical language you would use...I'd really appriciate it if someone could help me wiht my wakelocks....ive almost given up and if this forum doesnt solve it im throwing it away...
I have a S3 i9305 LTE...just rooted it the rest it all stock, ROM and kernal (JB 4.1.2 on BLL5)
I had this MASSIVE battery drain by the fastdormancy but i solved that by rooting and installing the toogle switch for i9300 (works for the i9305 too mercifully) so solved that....just as i heived a sigh of relief then crops up the
1) audioOut_2 wakelock
2) GTALK_ASYNC_CONN_com.google.android.gsf.gtalkservi ce.AndroidEndpoint wakelock
3) PowerManagerService
4) mdm_hsic_pm0
5) RILS
thats what the BBS says...and on the side if somebody could help me with the scroll lag as well. surprising that this phone has mosr power than the combine used to send man to the moon and it cant scroll smoothly! samsung is an utter nut-head for making phones that aren't useable for the common guy.
this is really a HUGE problem for me cause i get calls at all hours of the day. I went home after 30h shift and fell asleep on the couch. i had about 50% batt so i though i had enough and my battery dies somewhere in the heavenly sleep i was in...my prof kept calling me and i missed out on a surgery and he was absolutly mental with me (not that i blame him)...so you see I cant have this happening to me again. Im forced to carry the charger around everywhere i go and its a matter of time before i lose my phone leaving it around. Please help and be simple.

EDIT: So heres what ive been able to work out so far...
i flashed varioud ROMs and not all are the same...my suggestion is to try different ROMs and especially of your in a bad connection area and have sync wakelocks my advice is flash a different kernel (list of i9305 compatible kernels available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206898 goto the baseband/modem section). in my case my stock modem was LLB5 and it was horrible...i flashed BMD1 and i get full signals all over the hospital! this should help reduce the sync wakelocks esp like google's to a good degree...just remember not all modems and kernels work for everyone...thats just a hit and miss...you'll have to figure that out on your own....one phone may vary from the other...
The other thing esp if your phone heats up a lot on the most trivial tasks i highly recomment flashing a different kernel....again the list is available in the same post linked earlier...i had persues 36.2 work a bit esp with undervolting but not where i wanted it to be...so my plesent surprise i flashed the latest stock kernel and i dont even get the slightest bit of warmth anymore! that was a big surprise since i was told over and over that a quadcore will always heat up.
as for the battery try different ROMs...im currently using X-power by smaberg....it lasts me about a day and a half with approx 6h of screen time...i dont use it for gaming so you might have a varied preformace.
I doubt some wakelocks eg the audioout_2 wakelock cause the wake times dont add up with the audioout_2 lock....they do if you exclude it....like wise the download manager wakelock is the same thing, somehting is downloading in the background like a fix etc....
I'll keep posting if i make more breakthroughs....
EDIT:
FASTDORMANCY wakelock:
Im going to keep this short; fast_dormancy is for 3G only (maybe also lte) and its some over the top thing. more info by erica griffin on youtube. suffice it to say that if you install fastdormancy toggle by gokhanmohal from the app store you can easily switch it off. works for the i9305 as well. requires root.

I get around 2-3 days with the standard battery, 4-5 days with a 4300 mAh and 6-10 days with the 7000 mAh zerolemon (the bigger numbers are for scenarios where I only use the device strictly as phone - no games, no hours on internet).
The tricks that I use on the standard i9300:
- custom ROM, very little bloatware (I still keep the Samsung stuff that is to be used in case of lost/stolen phone, but no longer the free Avast - which is vastly superior for that purpose but the i9300 only has 1 GB of RAM)
- power-saving mode activated at all times when a serious game is not playing (this basically keeps max CPU at 1 GHz and is more than enough for anything on normal use; this also is very effective on stock kernel - on custom kernels it is less important, but on stock it is essential)
- every app and widget is set NOT to automatically refresh (or to refresh very rare and only on WiFi - my provider sucks on data plans)
- I use the toggles a lot and I keep stuff started only when I really need/use it - especially cellular data and wifi
- also greenify seems to help a little ; I also keep some stuff frozen with Titanium backup
- another thing that helps is a good custom kernel - on i9300 I use Siyah, Perseus and now GoogyMax - but you must be very careful with kernels since the image for i9305 is always different than the one for i9300
- if you want ultra-fast UI I would recommend Apex launcher (kept locked in memory) and exDialer (also kept locked in memory).

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply...
i do use nova launcher prime....honestly other than the sauce-e-ness i think the touch wiz is about as fast.
I dont have apps on auto update....infact ive never used my gmail via the app on the phone...i check it via the browser. i have twitter but all the options are on manual updates only.
I dont use wifi unless i have to (which is quite to a minimum) cause im always on the move and routers are password protected. i dont even use the 3G (the reason for toggling off the fast dormancy) only GPRS, which is on all the time for whatsapp.
Ill try the greenify and the power saving mode...thanks for that.
Now for the kernel and rom...i love having the toogle switchs and the brightness on the notification bar...i dont want to loose those. I dont want to change the rom and kernel unless i reallly have to, so ill maybe hold on that for now. But is there a way i can maybe just turn the locks off or better yet fix them is its possible...
I miss my BlackBerry days.....so simple were the times!

The Apex/Nova performance should be rather similar - I only mentioned Apex in the context of the 'slow drawing" that you mentioned initially. For that one you should also force GPU rendering, set animation delay to 0.5x (double speed), eventually test with and without hardware overlays.
Unfortunately there always are apps on auto-update (maps, taks/hangouts, play store, weather widgets and so on). Facebok is really, really bad - I always freeze that one in Titanium Backup. Also Twitter is said to create problems under certain conditions - but I never use that (and I also freeze this one).

How's your signal strength? If you have a crappy signal(and I assume you do because most hospitals I've been to have crappy signals) it really messes with your battery uptime.

Yeah sigal strength isnt excellent but i get all bars nost of the times...ive enabled the force GPU rendering and the hardware overlay....i read somewhere that the hardware overlay saves rom cause it creates seperate channels for the GPU processing each app seperatly rather than sharing a pooled ram space...i noticed less RAM being used after that so i left it on...as for the scroll lag i turned on the GPU did wonders for the scroll...not the gallery though but i think that might be because im on a class2 card...
For the others that may read this about the wakelock fastdormancy, I had the same issue but i fixed it....luckily the other tutorial out there was to code your way out of the wakelock but for someone like me (and i consider myself fairly well interms of following instructions) the tutorial way a crashcorse in jibberish! understood nothign not to say in the least wasted my time....thought im sure it does what it says....
MY ADVICE ON FASTDORMANCY is that you guys head over to youutbe and search for : "fastdormancy erica griffin" shes got a tutorial that explains what it is in the first 5 mins and in the last 5 she tell you how to spot if ur carrier provider has it and how to turn if off THE EASY WAY without coding!!!!! so cheers to that
HEADS UP: shes using a i9300 and the play store software is also labelled "fastdormancy toogle switch for i9300" but rest assured it works for the i9305 (atleast it did on mine thankfully) REQUIRES A ROOT though....but if ur rooted that itll take max 15mins to turn it off
say thanks if it helped you out....its the least you can do!
Fast dormancy is activated within each networks CSC settings .
Yes the I9300 Faqs and What is Fast Dormancy posts say turn it off unless your network supports it .

You mentioned AudioOut_2. Do you have Viber installed? For scrolling, well I don't have a problem with that, or with performance at all. This smartphone is super fast. Now a little basic education; you have a computer in your pocket with a lot of different services and apps installed, and not all of them are built equally well. Theoretically any of those apps can be a problem in your configuration. That can happen even to super computers. So it doesn't have to be a Samsung's or phone's fault. Though Samsung puts a lot of bloatware, but you are free to remove it and tweak your device as a power user . You have already rooted your 9305 . Now remove all sh* you don't use/need, install a custom kernel like Perseus or Boefla, OC a little and tweak your phone for performance. In settings under developer options section, force GPU rendering. Maybe try disabling hardware overlays, but just try. It will depend on a lot of things if it is going to help actually.
---------- Post added at 12:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:18 AM ----------
And to go back to your battery again, the problem is probably one or more of your apps. You cannot have a bunch of viber like apps running in the background 0-24 and have a low battery drain. Viber is one of the worst I had on this phone, GN2 and Galaxy Nexus. It was draining the battery like crazy with the AudioOut_2 process. Also if you have opportunity, use wireless instead of mobile provider internet. That will save your battery too.
---------- Post added at 12:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:23 AM ----------
Also when you can, turn off the mobile data, or better turn on the airplane mode. For example, if you are going to sleep, and you don't have to answer to no one in first 3 h of sleep, turn on the airplane mode, and alarm, wake up, and turn of the airplane mode, continue sleeping . You'll do that only if you are really desperate to get the most of the battery of course.

Turn off location services, if you don't use them. Turn off auto location in weather widgets, if you use them. Turn off motions.

So i tried it last night with the data off...blimy was i surprised! i lost only 2% over night...approx 6h!!! thats was mind numbing!!!! so i think its safe to say that the problem is an app thats connecting all the time...i have most apps greeneefied...but accourding to the BBS the network usage is by android (OS and the system) mostly...how do i turn that off???
Ive already turned off all the location services and nothing is on auto sync or autorefresh...hardly any of the apps i installed are showing up int he network tab in BBS...just a quick question what should i pay more attention to, the total time awake or the number of wakelocks or the numebr of times waking the device (im also using GSam battery monitor...i think its got a better UI and equally good monitoring as BBS)
No i dont have viper or skype or anythign like that...the only thing i have is whatsapp...you think the problems will go away if i chenge the kernel/ROM?
Usually the most important tab from BBS is partial wakelocks. Total time awake is important, it tells you that your phone spends a lot of time awake for example, but in order to find out why, you usually check partial wakelocks. There you look for wakelocks who take a lot of time. If disabling data helped that much, you probably have a bad reception. At home you don't need mobile data, you probably have wireless network, so use that. I don't think changing kernel will help. Changing ROM maybe. ICS ROMs were using less power than Jelly Bean.
---------- Post added at 04:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 PM ----------
Regarding network usage, how much is that mostly? If you are connected to any network, there has to be some network activity because of the network protocols alone.

I dont use the mobile data a lot mainly whatsapp to communicate with friends in other countries...i could leave it to wifi when im home but in the hospital a lot of them are passowrd protected and i move around a lot from floor to floor so i dont think that will be feasible...im perplexed that network activity alone would cause such a drain!!!
do you think if i turned system updates off that might help? i doubt it since on wifi there arnt much wakelocks outside my screen time...
and another quick question s3 (i9300) has a lot of custom kernels and roms but i see that i9305 not as many and i can obviously use the former for the latter but which is the best kernel/ROM for i9305 for a smooth and fast experiernce....I really love the notification toggle buttons on the stock ROM and i saw that null ROM has it but there isnt a i9305 version

Yes, modem uses more power then wireless in normal circumstances, but when the reception is poor it can drain the battery almost like screen.
Regarding performance, try Boefla or Perseus kernels with stock based ROMs, but remove all stuff you don't need. You can search for 'apps safe to remove ob S3' or similar.
Use one of leaner launchers. I like Nova, but you can try something leaner.
so i finally figured out most of the wakelocks....the gtalk is really acting up...apparently when i disable the google framework services in the apps the wakelock disappeares altogeather! but you cant work the play store or gmail without that....what do i do? any updates for that available maybe they have fixed it?
btw i tried a new ROM the x_power rom...its much better in terms of battery life and equally smooth, more customisable and so far i think im loving it more than the touchwiz.....but unfortunatly i still have the wakelocks...alas! im tired of all this!
anyway can i turn off the android system and android OS communicating (with God knows whom) through my internet permenently? im tired of it and thts the problem behind my wakeloacks (atleast some of them)
thanks
You have said that when you disable mobile data things get better? Now I don't get this, why wakelocks are there only when mobile data are used instead of wireless?
Further, having wakelocks is perfectly normal, it depends on how much CPU time they are taking.
If you want you can use Rom Toolbox Pro, or System Tuner Pro or even a file browser to remove system apps you think to cause a problem, after you are sure the system works ok when they are disabled (frozen).
With apps like I have just mentioned, you can freeze (permanently disable, until you defrost them.) talk or hangouts or even framework to check how it works. Then if it's ok for you, remove them completely.

But if disabling mobile data helps, and you don't need them all the time (the connection sucks where you are in hospital, so you have no use of it anyway.) why not just doing that, disabling data when you are at work?

And yes, regarding 'with God know whom' in order for connection to be active, the protocol needs to exchange some data, so that you can receive new messages for example etc. But yes, some other things could happen too . For example a couple of months ago, or even a year, a guy from Germany traced the packages of Samsung's voice app (I forgot the name, since I am not using/having it.) to NSA or something like that servers.
Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk 2
Have you updated gtalks to hangout and see if the wake lock persists ?
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda app-developers app
no i havnt updated to hangouts instead of google talk...i had that frozen for awhile but found out htat the gtalk wakelock wasnt by the talk app but by google services (apparently including the play store and gmail etc)
but ill give it a go and see where things go....
Samsung updating to NSA? what the what?!? im perplexed and bewildered!
yeah i dont have the waklocks on wifi or when i restrict the data connection in the setting menu...someone pointed out it might by the relentless attempts to the tower by the phone so i think that shots down that theory...oh by the way i turned off the data connection one night and left the wifi on and to my utter surprise i lost only 1% total battery in the night! now thats what i call preformance!!!! so i think 2 days on a single charge and good use isnt out of ambition alone..
i read a post by some guy (on XDA link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=221339) hes getting round 9 hours of battery life and another one who says 10hours thought this one is a more mature dev i think... for the life of me id pay them to help me get that preformance!!!
the wakelocks are approx over an hour with only 3-ish hours of screen time total between charges....i think for that little use and hour of wakeup time is a bit excessive...but its begining to really tick me off....ill try undervolting....but for now my biggest enemy are the activitymanager_launch , and the GTLK_ASYNCCONN and another new one taht popped up with this new custom rom the EM/android_talk638c986c851e....
oh by the way whenever i charge my phone stays awake despite screen off....that not only heats up the phone whenever i pick it up but also slows dows charging...like i said my schedule is very tight all the time and i need approx 3-4h for a full charge from 10%...thats messed up...
can we get a dev in here?

alright it is with great pain that i am writing this, but i really need some help here. for months i've read the forums, searched for answers, asked little individual questions, IMed with people directly for help... and i'm still having trouble.
i rooted my T-Mobile G1 all the way back when cupcake first came out. everything was great. life was grand. everything ruled. i was a happy android fanboy, talking friends into switching to android, talking crap about iphones... the works... but slowly things started getting slower and slower and slower...
the obvious thing was to wipe and reflash. i was constantly just updating to newer cyanogen roms at that point without wiping. so i wiped to the newest cyanogen at the time (can't remember at this point, but just picture it was like a couple months after cupcake). so things were good again for a little bit, but then it started slowing down again, getting FC's, etc. so a friend recommended i switch to superD... i did, and again, everything was great for a while. i consistently upgraded superD roms (sometimes wiping in between sometimes not). eventually i got to the point where i was on the most recent superD release. it lasted about a day before things started slowing down. examples include when i hit home to exit an application and go to the home screen, the whole screen would either turn black or just show my wallpaper for a good 5 seconds before my home screen would appear, or opening the browser would take like 10 seconds. lots of slow down.
so with the help of a friend i decided to completely wipe and reformat/repartition my sd card. i bought titanium backup but i didn't even bother with it, i said to myself, look, you barely use any of the stuff you have right now, how about just start fresh and reinstall things as you need them manually. so i formatted, repartitioned (using amon Ra's recovery, using the menu option that helps you do it automatically). i made sure i had the most recent radio and spl (this was just a couple months ago), and reflashed the most recent superD (i think its 1.11 if i remember correctly)... again, maybe one day of good performance before everything slowed down. this was also about the time when my battery life started becoming an issue. i'm not exaggerating when i say i couldn't make it home without breaking under 20% battery by the end of the day... and i really don't use my phone THAT much. i'd say i'm a little above average on my usage. i'll get into my widgets and apps in a second, but i really don't use that much stuff...
SO... continuing my story (thanks for sticking with me if you're still reading...). when cyanogens 2.1 for the g1 rom came out (5.0.8d/s) i decided it was time for a change. i reformatted AGAIN, repartioned AGAIN, and flashed 5.0.8. basically, i've got the same story going on. slowdowns, poor battery life, etc.
so here i am with my cyanogen 5.0.8 flashed g1. let me tell you about apps and widgets and stuff. right now i have a regular wallpaper (not live), 14 icons between my 5 screens and just the google search and power management widgets. i used to have calwidget, the genie widget (both news and weather), and the setcpu widgets too, but i decided to take them off to see if it would help with performance. zero help. apps that i either know for sure are always running or i think may have some impact are twidroyd, newsrob, craigsnotif (craigslist notifier), and dealdroid. i don't think any other apps are running and/or do automatic updates for content and stuff like that.
i also use cachemate (purchased) regularly to clear my caches. apps2sd is enabled.
i'm not sure what other information you'd need to help me out, but just let me know and i'll try to give you more details.
right now, i've got slow down like almost all the time. things are constantly pausing, slowing down. i feel like i'm back on my t-mobile mda with winmo5 haha. and forget about it with the battery. i left the house with 90% battery this morning. i went to the gym. went home. picked up lunch. came to work. its been like 4 hours. i currently have 19% battery. all i've done is make 2 phone calls, about a dozen text messages and i've sent 2 tweets (about my battery problem haha). i also used google maps once to look up a number. my wifi and gps is off.
so there we go. really guys, please please please. help me out if you can. any help would be appreciated. i'm so sick of this. and i'm stuck in contract until july 2011. so i'm not getting a new phone any time soon. i gotta figure this thing out.
i really appreciate your help.
thanks.
Dave
OH... and PS... forgot to mention that I just got a new battery this week thinking maybe the battery was just getting old and bad. obviously, no such luck.
I had the same issues till I flashed a SuperD, then everything was fine. I just recently flashed the Froyo from Cyanogen and its like it fixed everything and I'm on a brand new device (knock on wood)!
How old is your G1? Do we know if there are issues with the first run out of the factory? Is that even an issue?
i got the g1 last july. so it was already out for a while at that point. it was new from a store though. i suppose there could be something actually wrong with the phone itself, but i don't know. i was thinking of trying the cyanogen froyo but because its not a stable release yet i figured it would be just this bad or worse...
I promise cm5.0.8 has wonderful battery life when no custom apps are installed and not on any network..
so the question is what is your phone doing, and ought it be doing what it is doing.
There are some nice built in tools for this
Applications->running services
And
Applications -> manage applications (check out the filter in the menu from that screen)
You may be surprised by the apps the think they need to constantly have a service running for some painful trivial job the android API has better interfaces for.. if in addition to that you don't need the app uninstall it.
Otherwise experiment with comp cache and lock launcher in memory.
another example, as i was reading this i was on the phone and i just finished the call and hung up, and i was previously in text messages, it took 12 seconds for my text messages to come up. thats just insane...
as for running services:
- GTalkService <--- I use GTalk all the time
- GenieRefresh Service (Restarting) <--- weird considering I disabled this widget, although I'd LIKE to have it back
- Maps FriendsAppWidgetUpdater (Restarting) <--- never used this in my life
- NewsRob UnreadWidgetProvidor (Restarting) <--- never used the widget before (as a matter of fact, you have to pay to use the widget and i have the free version... weird)
-Twidroyd Background Service <--- understandable, I use this constantly
- AKNotepad Snaptic Update (Restarting) <---- umm... I use this all the time but I don't know why a notepad program would need an updater service running... interesting...
- Swype <---- gotta have that
- CM Updater (Restarting) <--- Don't really think that needs to be on all the time. Can easily manually refresh that...
So that's it. I didn't realize this was included now. Very cool. On older roms I had to use task managers which don't seem to really work. I'm going to stop everything except twidroyd, gtalk and swype right now and see how that does... at the bottom it says Avail: 3.2MB+0.00B in 0 ... Other: 55MB in 4 ... While typing that the Maps FriendsAppWidget just popped back up... I'm gonna see if theres a setting...
In the meantime, does any of this give you any ideas? thank you so much for the advice. Also what does (Restarting) mean?

oh and i have compcache not checked and launcher in memory IS checked... i just tried turning on the compcache option... lets see how that goes...
ok so...
now that i know about those things that were running, i stopped all the ones i don't need, and also went into the apps to see if there was any options for turning off automatic updates, background syncing, etc etc for those things... i'm gonna charge my phone while getting ready to go out and then we'll see how it goes throughout the evening. lets see if i make it home with more than 20% battery left (i'll be gone for like 5 hours). if so then we're on to something here still i find it weird that i can't have a few widgets loaded. but whatever, i'll take a smoothly running phone that lasts all day and i just have to click on icons to get to stuff any day... thanks for the help, i'll let you know how its going tomorrow.
the next day
ok so i tried the compcache and keep launcher in memory options last night, messing with both settings. i found that every possible combination became very unstable other than the one i already had (which was compcache off and launcher in memory on). after trying to shut excessive running services like i mentioned yesterday, and also restarting the phone and then shutting them again, i got NO difference in performance OR battery life...
so back to square one... any ideas guys?
thanks so much for any help you can give me. i really really appreciate it.

Um... The compcache instability scares me a bit
Compcache has had issues (maybe still does) where the first time you enable it the phone crashes.. but then works fine with Compcache on reboot. Otherwise it really ought no make the phone unstable. (it may or may not speed things up depending on how memory is being used.. usually however it allows 12MB of memory that is rarely used to be compressed, allowing a little more active memory to be utilized) You may want to look into wiping dalvik-cache both on the internal memory and SD card:
Enter console and run (this will restart the phone)
Code:
rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache/*
rm -rf /cache/dalvik-cache/*
rm -rf /sd-ext/dalvik-cache/*
reboot
if you get an error about no files found thats not an issue; but other errors may indicate a problem.
This may help system stability (with or without compcache) .. but won't do anything about the battery life (nor speed unless something was seriously wrong)
-------------------
Unfortunately you will either need to erase all your apps and just run stock CM5 [maybe slowly restore your apps you really need] -- OR -- be very patient and debug whatever application(s) are causing issues on your phone (and maybe complain to the dev for failing to read/understand google's documentation on how to write android applications.. not that some of the google apps haven't quite figured that out until recently)
Thus again the main question is what is running on your phone.. The places I mentioned before allow you to see the services (most of which usually restart if you run the related application again) but not strictly all the details to look for.
Example 1 An widget service is likely holding onto memory starving timer services (those not listed) and swapping out other services (phone/launcher making everything feel slow) At the same time the widget is not very active usually and may not connect to the internet at all; thus may not reduce battery life.
Example 2 An IM client on the other hand may requires a service to keep TCP/IP connections alive, and if not coded properly may be very persistent and cause a slow continual stream of data from your phone requiring a large amount of power to keep the phone on 2G/Edge.
Example 3 A Task killer an kill tasks that re-spawn, or kill a task in use if it doesn't know better causing things to behave in strange ways.. so can killing services/applications from the setting screens btw.. but at least that is a one off by user decision not a automatic operation in the background. Tasks when re-spawned may require more data from the internet thus more power to 2G/Edge
User: Then the one that causes me the most problems: A user that keeps the phone in his/her pocket rather than surfing the web, checking XDA, or continuously checking the battery level is using the device less thus will have longer battery life. (careful to not fall into this trap)
Other Ideas:
SetCPU: set the sleep CPU low in profiles (sleep for me is 245/160)[/*]
Verify End action: Settings->End Button Behavior->Go to sleep[/*]
Set longer periods between polls in applications that poll the net (example twitter every 10 or 20mins.. not 5)[/*]
Larger net transfers on wifi if available (example tell newsrob to sync on wifi only) wifi drains the battery faster than idle, but is much cheaper if larger amounts of data are involved.[/*]
As you can see many things will impact the system. You will need to find the ones eating your battery
Another helpful screen for debugging this may be Settings->Spare Parts->Battery History and Settings->Spare Parts->Usage Statistics
I get between 4h and 12h batter life under semi-normal conditions. 4h = surfing 3g + tappatalk + games.. 12h check email/tweat if i get one.. otherwise stays in my pocket. I've seen my test phone hang out for days on a 2g network without data. (so you can always set your apn type to mms if you just need it to be a phone for many hours.. mms keeps mms support btw)
Ebuddy (and most other MSN/AIM/ect chat clients is frequently one of the biggest problems on my phone.. so if I need more battery those are the first to go.. and whomever it is can poke me on gtalk/txt/or wait
Good luck in your search.. Took me a while to make cm5 work as long as cm4.. most of it was mis-behaving apps that I either know to shut off when I need longer battery life.. or have found replacements for.. or avoid widget functionality if the widget was misconfigured. (
Hello. So I already made one thread but didn't get much of replies. If you own LG P920 or not you can still help. I have some questions and problems with phone If you could answer any of these please do it.
Questions: What is the best ROM for O3D. I never used any different roms than stock.
Does ROM make change in GPS accuraccy? (Accuraccy of my GPS is pretty bad sometimes.
Does Rom change the battery life? And If yes count battery life in question 1
In User manual it says you must use only official LG batteries otherwise the phone may explode. Is that true?
Is overclocking safe and does it have any downsides?
What is the difference between Mod and Rom?
Is There Any Way How To Change backlight brightness. It just wastes battery at night
Problems :
Bluetooth doesnt work. I tap it but nothing happens.
TTS doesnt work either .anytime Im trying to get in TTS settings I get a force close
My media volume keeps randomly going to one state. While Im listening to music or even when screen is off. Im using audioguru but in every profile is media volume set to 0.
Phone reboots after turning on Wi-Fi. It works First time after reboot but when I turn it off and then on it reboots.
CPUs second core seems to be offline all the time. I'll post photo taken right after playing a game while CPU is set on 1 ghz . Sometimes I hear something from back of a phone when playing games but Im not sure if Thats it. I dont often get lags when playing games like asphalt 6 so i dont really know.
Another Problem is what I already mentioned. eXtreme battery drain. 2-5 hours depends if im browsing and watching videos or my phone just sits in pocket.
And The last thing not that big deal is that norton antivirus is showing that location service or whatever it is has a malware in it (I 'll post photo)
If you could Answer any of these please do it. Thanks . Sorry for bad english

I've had some performance issue with my Optimus 2X for a while now. It really seems like a memory problem because let's say I unlock my phone, and just want to swipe the pages, it'll hang there for a couple seconds, then it will swipe the page in a very choppy way. But after a couple swipes (3-4), it becomes normal and fluid. This is just an exemple, often I'll try be doing something on my phone and it'll just take forever to load and it will end up saying "xxxx isn't responding, do you want to close it, WAIT, REPORT, OK". Then I just click wait and everything is fine for a little while.. another exemple: Just now I had my GF send me a text message, I click the txt box to reply and it took close to 10sec for my Swiftkey keyboard to show up.
I had been running CM7 for a while and recently decided I could try other Roms/Kernel and it might just help..A month or so ago I went in Paranoid Android, but if anything the phone was even slower.
Last week I went with CM10. At first the phone seemed more responsive but the more apps I reinstalled and the more widgets I put, it slowly became the same again.
I had some free time today and decided to investigate a little further. First a look in the System Tuner Pro app, I noticed my memory was almost full (<100mb left) right after a fresh reboot! There was about 250mb in use.. Then I looked in my "About Phone" page already and it says I have 342mb of memory! isn't this phone suposed to have 512mb?
Screenshot : http://i.imgur.com/nZNAh6U.png
Well I think this could explain a lot, but wtf is happening to my phone. I can't really tell when exactly the "being slow" started, it seems like it started gradually.
It's been a very frustrating phone in the last couple of months, I decided to end my contract as soon as can get my hand on a Note3, but until then I use my phone a lot.. and need it to work properly.
**edit** : Ok nevermind the 342mb, I searched the forum a little and found out the rest (170mb) is used by the Video Memory. Well, anyway, my phone is slow either way, so hopefully you guys have ideas that could help me, perhaps just tell me tools that could help me find the problem, anything...

This is a common problem of our phone due to the low amount of ram, as you said, 512mb, they are simply not enough. Why do you think most recent phones come with 4 time bigger amount of ram (2gb)?
Man, to keep thus old phone responsive, you have to choose the best rom / kernel for you, and setup them for your needs, first find your favourite rom / kernel, I can suggest you what I personally use, therom cm10.2 by tonyp with kowalsky m1 with 32mb ramhack, for me is the best at the moment, but after all, it is a personal choice, there are a lot of good roms. Well, if you want more ram, so multitask, then you have to use a kernel with ramhack, at least 18% ram spended I'm zram, and something like value 60 of swappiness

Also, I saw you have many notification of apps in your status bar.. This is a phone with a low amount of ram remember it. You seriously can't keep all this app installed, especially if they send you any kind of notification, because if they do it this means they take ram = less ram available = slow phone.
Listen to me. This will surely help you. If you don't still using it, you must try the app GREENIFY, it hibernate, means that if a app takes ram, it will no longer take it = free ram = fast phone!
But if you do it of course you will not receive any notification from it, but it's certainly worth it. What is the sense to multitasking from notification to notification if the switch takes 1 year to do?
For example I greenifyed Facebook, which I don't need in ram as I deactivated any notification service from the app but without GREENIFY it still suck like 45 mb of ram, while doing anything, with greenify it doesn't suck anything! Same thing for Google maps, YouTube, and all other apps that suck memory when I don't need them to, but sometimes I use them so I need to keep them installed, but anyway don't use so many apps that aren't indispensable keeped in ram, because they suck ram, and everything sucks ram sucks the general speed of the phone and a bit of battery remember it. My personal suggestion is when you see that a app that you won't greenify because you need its notification sucks much ram, like 15mb.. 20.. Etc, my suggestion is: unistall it, or if you won't to at least greenify it and use it only when you need to see the app itself, then when you're done greenify it again. and hey, saving ram means that you will save battery too. So speed + multitask + battery. What else?

Yea it looks worse than it is. Out of the 6 icons on top, there's really just 3 that I use.
3G watchdog to keep track of my data plan
Lux autobrightness
Weather app
The 3 other icons were just
USB debugging cuz the phone was pluged
System tuner pro, was currently recording data so I could analyze my problem.
And the last app I was testing to monitor bandwitdth (turns out it did take to much resource)
Also earlier today I installed a memory manager app named Memory Booster, it did seem to help .. just a little.
But alright, I'll give Greenify a try as well.. it sounds good
edit: So far it looks very good, I've freed much more ram with this. But I accidently hide some apps, anyway to bring them back in the list?

Greenify worked magic, it's night and day with my phone now, good catch.

Third Android phone and also 3rd older phone I've upgraded to 4.x. I basically went from stock, rooted, switched to new BL and fixed internal storage all using the O2X AIO tool, and finally flashed Slimkat (this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551925).
It was great for about 30 minutes but then started to slow down badly so I froze a bunch of packages I don't use and have frozen on other devices without issue (using performance control tools). Speed went back up. But 30 minutes later it's back in the crapper. We're talking 30 seconds from power button to lock screen showing up. Stock camera takes a good 2 minutes to be ready to take a picture. Just now I was trying to set something in GPS Test and literally the statusbar clock was at 11:00 until at least 11:03 before I was like ok battery pull.
Anyone have any suggestions? Did I miss a step? I've been through all the related posts and everyone seems to love Slimkat. I'm coming from phones even older than this so I'm used to slow but come on...
Really appreciate any advice! Thanks!
Edit: I should mention I have installed FB Messenger with some modified permissions, Gmail, Now Browser, Root Browser, and Touchpal keyboard... That's all.

I think that the memory is maybe running full, FB Messenger isn't always the best on memory usage/Battery usage and about the other apps I dont know, But There are apps which are resyncing, rerunning and which stay in background so it doesn't completely closes even if you do so.
Thanks for your reply! Actually afterward I switched OOM to aggressive (or something more aggressive, can't remember). Seems to be a lot better. I don't care about battery, I just want speeeeeeeed Oddly enough I still need to "double tap" the power button (!) to get it to wake. Weirdest thing.
If you're finding Slimkat at all slow then stop suffering and flash CM11 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2769730

I had the same problem, so I had to uninstall it.:crying:
Hi all.
Have been modding and playing around with Note 4 and the emmc fault is a bi*ch. If it works, you never know when the damn thing will stop functioning. And the phone itself is always a bit buggy with custom roms. I noticed that several people here compare it to Note 3 and mean that Note 3 overall has certain advantages, easier to modd, less buggy, and of course, is not plagued with emmc fault. Don't get me wrong, i have several units and i really like the damn thing.
So i would like to ask all you who actually HAVE experience of both, write here a line or two, and compare those two. Which one is actually more thankfull for modding? N4 being of course newer, but does it make that big of a dirfference?
Hi, i don't have an note 3, i have and use a note 4, very happy with the phone running android 6.01 heavy customized and with the best kernel (ram Kernel v8.1 never had any issues with emmc or any other for that matter, it runs very smooth with no problems, battery last for a week, standby 0.4% per hour.
Ok. Difficult to make comparison then since you have no experience with Note 3, but thanx anyway.
Sounds good tho. May I ask then how your setup looks like, since having a battery last for a week is really an achievment?
System:
I Installed stock PHN DRI2 Build with ram Kernel v8.1 removed a lot of user apps that i don't need and also a lot of system apps that drain your battery, i use magisk for root and have two modules in use GPU Turbo Boost (not sure if this does anything but i leave it anyway installed) and Swap Torpedo (no swap file that saves battery) i use for tweaks the L Speed app and some build.prop tweaks most of them are from goldeneye rom.
Apps:
I use Ungoogled Chromium, this browser is memory and battery friendly as it does not call home all the time and i don't use social media apps as they are all battery hogs, i have about 50 apps installed and i use afwall for firewall and as email i use exchange push email with stock email client.
I tried almost every rom available for the note 4 910F but all suck in battery or the pen is not working, with a lot of trial and error in debloating the rom i stick with the one i have now, i am running it for 3 years and i am a happy camper. I love this phone with the pen the screen size and the exchangeable battery, it runs for a week with one charge 7 days with 3 hours and 43 minutes screen on, the onscreen time (backlight slider at 1/3 and dark color wallpaper) is about 7 hours in one go and it uses 0.4 battery per hour in standby (measured with GSam Battery Monitor since 1 year). I had newer phone they are all made of glass, no battery exchange and no earphone connector. Long story short, great phone . If you like to have the build.prop tweaks i can give them to you. The L speed app you can download from XDA https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/l-speed.6156/ .

Thank you very much for the offer, but build props are way over my experience level, i think.
Btw, love the phone for the same reason as you do.
Besides, i am quite happy customer also, running @AnonVendetta s version of really bareboned stock 6.01. No Google, microG instead. No root. Not many apps. I probably could get a week out of a battery also with light use that i usually do. But i use Signal, and i just yesterday discovered that the damn thing just chugs battery like mad if you don't have Play Service installed. So with it installed i get at best a days use, with very light using of the phone.
I am currently rocking a Note 3 on Sprint and running Android 10 (Superior OS) and works great. All the convencience of Android with my removable battery and IR blaster (yes I use it for multiple TV's in multiple buildings I control). I use the S-Pen on Squid to take notes and jot down info and even mark up pictures so don't need Air Command. I sync with my FitBit Versa and run multiple smart home devices from the phone (including my whole home entertainment with the PEEL app).
The only 'complaint' I have is the bluetooth. There was a major problem past Android 7 of geting the thing to work. It does now. Voice and music work good. But occassionally it will just drop the device it connects to. I will re esablsih about 10 seconds later but still, that loses the lock on my Jeep radio and therefore keeps allowing the screen to lock. This is a minor annoyance but does need to be mentioned.
I JUST bought a Note 4 so thinking of loading LOS 17 on it and see how it goes. However I see most people here just kept stock Marshmellow. I dunno aobut that... isnt the UI buggy and limiting?
I look forward to any advice I can get!
Hi Dave,
I also use the IR remote for all my home appliance (dvbviewer TV on my pc, living room and bedroom tv and Bose audio system, i use the ir plus app great remote control app and it still gets updates, about the roms available for the note 4 i have the snapdragon version and i have tried all roms but i stay on stock 6.01 the MM version is not buggy at all, it never have problems, hangs crashes or reboots, i use the stock launcher smooth and fast, the UI interface is not important, the apps i use are all in dark mode, for me it's important i can use it the way i like it and it does. NOTE 4 still rocks like a champ with all the advantage it has. If this one breaks i will look for a other note 4, no newer phone for me. I dont know what version you have but try some rome you will see you will go back to 6.01 mm, its rock solid and battery friendly. Bluetooth on the note 4 sucks for battery use but does not crash or breaks anything, i have a gear fit2 pro but i dont connect it with the phone all the time just to sync .
Cheers

I am currently rocking a Note 3 on Sprint and running Android 10 (Superior OS) and works great. All the convencience of Android with my removable battery and IR blaster (yes I use it for multiple TV's in multiple buildings I control). I use the S-Pen on Squid to take notes and jot down info and even mark up pictures so don't need Air Command. I sync with my FitBit Versa and run multiple smart home devices from the phone (including my whole home entertainment with the PEEL app).

For me LOS17 was a no go because of the SIM issue and lack of encryption. I saw other having other issues. If i were you and needed something newer than marshmallow, then i would try LOS16. I found that one to be very stable, no issues so far for my use. Will perhaps migrate to that one with my daily driver in a while, when stock starts failing.
As for stock 6.0.1, not sure where you heard it was buggy?! I read that marshmallow was if not the least buggy Android OS ever and that is also my experience, at least on Note 4. I totally agree with @Qosmio-. It is the most rock solid rom i have ever had on a device. NEVER had any bugs, issues or anything. Battery friendly. I find launcher smooth, and run UI in 'easy mode', which i find the most appealing, colorwise and all. The perfect OS basically, if there ever was one. I have heard people starting to find apps that are no longer supported, but all apps that are important to me still work.
but wait - you use PEEL app as remote?
Wasn't that completely hidious advertisment-prone bloatware that was utterly unpleasant to use?

I only meant 'buggy' as outdated and unable to use the full Google Assistant features etc... Thats why I moved to newer ROMS Not as smooth and primitive features. I should try myself before I speak the negative about it!
So let's talk about PEEL.
The magic is to use this with Titanium Backup. I must say, PEEL can be set up to use and manage "scenarios" (Home, Work, Friend's House etc). If you set it up..
1.go in and click to NOT auto detect WiFi connections
2.disable advertising and lock screen and persistant notifications for 30 days.
3. Set up a Custom Remote Scenario
4. Create a Widget for the App to default on Custom Remote
3. Do a TB of the app!
I have found, on the newer ROM's it stays Ad Free.. but if it gets weird to annoying just do a TB restore "data only" and then you are golden!
Ive tried lots of other 3rd party apps but I keep going back to PEEL. It stays ad free and as a remote (not as a channel guide) it works exremely well, is desined well and functions well.
Hit me up if you want more specifics! Maybe I should start a 'how to' thread..

No not at all, i protect my use of internet at home and phone ( i am system engineer for 35 years so i know what i can and can't do), if you look what still need to be patched for android Exploits vulnerability-list , every new or old version of android user is @ risk. When connected with my phone to internet via my provider it will change the phones ip address every 15 minutes, i use a firewall (afwall) on my phone and disabled ipv6, i am connected to my home with openvpn to pfsense firewall for internet access and i use my own MS exchange mail server and dns server resolver with ad and privacy telemetry filter with pfblocker. There are things you don't do with old version of android and that is visite websites that are shady, porn websites and browse without a strong ad blocker or privacy filter.

I had tried using some Liniage Versions but on the Sprint Variant they woulnt make phone calls or text so I had to ditch them. I am downloading now so will give it a flash and see! Thank you for the heads up!
Dave
EDIT
Ok.. loaded up the Crdroid ROM. Working well, but with my SM 910P I am having bluetooth problems keeping sync with my Fitbit, Lack of LTE (but works on 3G) and a few other bugs but am managing. What carrier are you with? I would appreciate any tweeks you have found to help out.

Hi Dave,
Sorry for the late reply, i just read your post in the cdroid section, i am with simpel carrier i dont have any problems using LTE and have no problem with sms (i dont use mms) , the only tweaks is with the L speed app and kernel auditor to lower the idle frequentie of the GPU and set it to 166 instead of 240 to save battery. My gear fit2 pro on bluetooth works fine to so i am a happy camper. What you could try is other modems from other stock roms if you did not try that already maybe that helps with you LTE problem.
Cheers

Sorry for all the bouncing around in the forums. Trying to play Note 4 catchup...
Well that is an interesting thought. As a CDMA carrier customer (Sprint) I feel I am locked into my own island.
Can I just do a stock modem restore in TWRP onto my CRDroid ROM ? I am not at all sure why my Bluetooth is having such a problem with my Versa 2.. Maybe it is the versa problem?
Anyways, I can see a bit where the Note 4 gets laggy with camera use and running a few other commands at once. I know this is older but my Note 3 did not seem to hesatate this much. I like the idea of considering lowering my GPU.
Let me know if you have any other thoughts?
Dave
Np Dave there is so much information to take in that i can't blame you when bouncing aroubnd in the forum , You can and must make a backup with twrp of your modem in use and then fiddle around with different versions, its very easy to rip modems with 7zip from different original roms and zip (7zip) them to flash it with twrp. As for bluetooth it can be a pain in the ass with custom roms especially with asop roms, do some searches in the forum maybe someone has the same issue as you have.
Cheers

I found a forum that says to go into the application and wipe data and cache and then I went into TWRP and wiped ART/Cache. That seems to help with the 'Bluetooth Keeps Stopping" error. I have tried to load several other ROM's but they wont install due to Error 7 codes. I supsect becuase I updated to the Q15 version and these older ROMS arent being updated. So I will keep trying to nurse the CrDroid 10 version and see if it can be improved..
I'm not an expert but for me.. note 3 is more stabLe than note 4 when it comes to custom rom. Easier to mod, and Less buggy. ( thanks to aLL deveLopers at kay Lodi @jprimero15 )
TiLL now stiLL Looking for a rom that can fit note 4 for daiLy usage.
Thanks
I am using Emotion Kernel, and Xposed. I will just to Android 12 at the moment it will be available.
I never used the Note 3, but i wonder is it faster than the Note 4 in daily usage. The Note 4 Snapdragon CPU is a frying pan and it can strongly reduce its performance when it gets hot.
My phone will in consequence randomly reboot, but i have a simple script that detects overheating and lower the CPU freq (works good)
Is the Note 3 quick and doesn't overheat when browsing internet?
