[Q] Image quality / unable to focus? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA,
First time posting, hopefully I met all the critera...
I just picked up a "new" HTC One this afternoon, and everything is grand. Except I'm having some issues with the camera: I noticed after taking a few photos, that the images all appear "out-of-focus". Probably not the right term, but they images seem to lack a certain amount of sharpness.
Now, I realize its a 4 Ultrapixel camera, so it shouldn't have as much image detail. But the camera doesn't seem to be producing images with any kind of clarity. At least, when compared to other shots I've seen on this forum / reviewer. I'm coming from a Nexus S, and comparing my old handset / other HTC One's vs this one, the images just seem wrong. And after factory resets, different camera apps, tweaking all the settings... no improvement.
HTC Support has asked me to send it in, but I was hoping to get some external validation from other users?
**EDIT** - I can't post external links on my first post... sorry
>> postimg.org/image/t8248slvz
I've taken multiple of the same scene, trying to focus on the stop sign, house across the street, and the sky. All images have the same level of clarity, with slight variations of color, exposure, etc... Am I just wrong, or is there something I'm missing?... Or do I have a possible hardware concern?

That's really bad. Get yours exchanged quick

Yea, I have tried to update as well as re-install the camera app. I've also installed 2 other camera apps, with pretty much the same effect... Slightly different color and saturation, but the image remains un-focused.
I'm hesitant to flash another ROM, since I suspect the hardware is going back to the service depo ASAP... But thanks, good tip.

[Q] Camera... TW.. A whole lotta curiosity going on here

Didnt know if i should have made seperate threads for each question... Here goes:
Camera
-+---+----+
- is this same camera as SG2? Seems better
- i noticed the galaxy nexus' camera takes multiple single shots at a very high succession rate.. is that contributed because of diff cameras or ice cream sammich's awesomeness?
- i also notice that when im taking photos, it looks amazing right before the shot..(veeeeery sharp) but right after i take the shot, the photo loses its ultra sharpness.
- i also notice this happening on all of my previous android phones
- is this a samsung/android camera app thing? are there better camera app alternatives?
TouchWiz
-+---+----+
- I know theres themes and all that funk for other launchers.. but any way to modify/theme TW? .. I love TW and wouldnt really change anything other than theme it.

Can only answer that the lost focus in taking pictures may be due to shaky hands, focusing mechanism becomes confused as a result..there is a setting which allows for shake reduction; try it, see any differences?
Everytime I see a camera question/comment I am always curious about the issue. Someone always suggests a fix like the one below, whether it's use or settings.
I'm not blaming the respondents, but people need to understand that there is a problem with SOME Notes concerning autofocus. I keep coming back here to try to find a possible software solution, but it's very possible one of the camera vendors simply supplying Note cameras with bonky autofocus in the hardware.
I appreciate the fact that MOST Notes appear to have wonderful cameras, so to those of you, please be aware there is no simple solution to fixing the camera problem that SOME of us are experiencing.
Note (ha!) also that this extends to the Galaxy SII. There are a couple threads in their forum discussing similar camera issues, even though the two phones have different camera modules, and lack of progress getting Samsung to even acknowledge there could be a problem.

anti-shake won't work if you set some parameters especially the ISO value manually! reason: anti-shake does nothing more then trying to reduce the "shutter time", for that higher sensitivity is needed. therefore, if the cam is not being able to use a higher ISO setting anti-shake wont be available!

Is the camera really as bad as the reviews say?

I've currently got a rooted HTC sensation which I'm due to upgrade. My choice is between the HTC one and the galaxy s4, but my choice seems to come down to the camera quality. Is the one camera really as bad as the reviews suggest?
I havent got any examples that I can post but the quality seems much crisper that my previous device (Sensation)
Low light shots seem ok and auto-focus seems to work much quicker. Zoe is also a nice feature!
link to the review?
Why create a new thread? There's at least 3 threads talking about the camera....... :banghead:

Are you just being lazy or just being a troll by opening a thread with a negative impact title? Hard to tell...Anyway, if really interested you could have looked at least at one photo thread which contains dozens of camera reviews.

No need to be like that, that thread has loads of pictures from all the one series. Not specifically the new one. And the various reviews I've read seem to conflict, some saying it's okay, others stating it's useless. Hence me asking for anyone's first hand experience with the phone now it's been released.
Start at the last page and work backwards, plenty of user pictures from the One.

Well, for serious photography I hang a DSLR around my neck and carry a couple of extra lenses in the backpack. For snapping a quick shot whilst I'm just pottering about or hanging with the guys the camera is far more than adequate.

Sorry man but today we have already seen a topic closed for plane trolling and in this context your thread title seemed a little out of line especially since there are already lots of user pictures and opinions available, i needn't speak about dozens of reviews. Didn't mean to be rude but next time better check first what info is available and maybe select a more appropriate title.
In my opinion i was expecting the photos taken to be a bit better but i am also quite optimistic about the fact that software updates might turn it into an excellent smartphone camera.

It's okay, not trying to bash the phone, just trying to find out which phone to upgrade to!
I saw that thread you're talking about and even commented a little, but unfortunately there were a couple of Samsung fanboys who turned it into a company vs company thread instead of just having unbiased comparisons between phones.
I don't have a decent camera, nor do I have the option to carry one around all the time since I'm normally dragging a couple of infants around with me, I'm not really an avid photographer either. I just want it to be at least as good as the one on my sensation since I do use it fairly regularly, but can't make my mind up on handset! I think I may have to just go into a phone shop and compare for myself.
Like I keep saying
The HTC One camera is an extremely well equipped camera, OIS, super fast shutter, low light ability, f2.0, wide angle lens, powerful macro ability, best HDR on phones, all combined gives a very powerful camera
However as usual with HTC it will still require manual efforts from ur side those camera settings are there to be used
Compared to your sensation its light years ahead of it, compared to the One X you loose something and gain something in return
Things to keep in mind always reduce sharpness in HTC cameras and for the One in specific auto enhance or contrast increase might be needed as well due to the extra light in its day light photos
But it's not match to the 13MP detail from the sgs4 camera purely in terms of resolution
I came from DHD, wife still has Sensation. We're in full agreement that the One takes much better pictures.

I am in similar position. For me which phone I choose next will be down to camera. One thing I missed after iphone was the way you cam trim videos before sending to get correct file size. As far as I am aware only htc on android can do this - forward to 1145 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23nQyOpixiU&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
I will no doubt get the one but camera is a worry as htc are not really promoting it in any adverts I have seen so far in uk. More blink and boom ?? Waiting for 64gb too but if we ever get it who knows ???
The camera thread is great but I am now info overloaded so really have to go test one in more depth.

Do you use digital zoom or lot, or blow up pics after you make them? IMO, this is the weak point of the camera. It's lens is 28mm (35mm film equivalent) and you don't have the latitude to zoom that you would with more MP. Personally, I am more a telephoto guy than wide angle so it bugs me, but everyone is different.
(I decided to punt and keep my S3 for now. Camera plus questions on headphone audio. Mixed feeling though, as I really like the low light attributes and boomsound speakers.)
Just wait until release and judge for yourself and decide if it's really an amazing camera.
I have never, in too many years to mention, used a digital zoom. Never saw the point in stretching one sensor pixel to fill 4, 9, 16 or more final image pixels.
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One via xda-developers application
Yeah, digital zoom is terrible regardless of the camera used. I do however sometimes zoom in on my photos, which I assume won't be much good with the one.
Afraid that zooming after the event won't get you anywhere with the One. Granted, although my phone's have progressed from being a phone/txt device that could play snake when I was bored all the way to a miniature computer that can make calls as well I've never viewed them as a camera replacement. Hell, you can get a little 8Mp snapper that's smaller then current headline phones for a fraction of the cost AND they've got optical zoom with a lense that retreats into the body of the camera when you put it back in your pocket.

Camera sometimes blurry?!

Hey guys,
i own my One for a couple of days now and I'm a bit unsure if the cam is really okay.
I'm on 1.29 and some pictures are really blurry on different areas, but then again the same camera shot is completely okay and sharp.
Here are examples of what I meant.
The first two pictures were taken from the same location and you'll see the difference (besides the sky is not in line in one of them).
The third one is really blurry on the right side but this can't be a out of focus thing because of the small sensor and wide angle.
The other pictures I made were completely fine so far.
Is this a known issue? How can I test the camera better? Do I need a replacement?
Thanks
Daniel

I did the same shot a couple of times and here is the difference (this is a crop from the left side of the picture)
Mine does the same thing I don't know why...

The distortion seems to indicate a problem with the rolling shutter, along with movement in the camera. I'd hazard a guess and say your hand was moving slightly when the first picture was taken. The effect shouldn't be that pronounced, though, you shouldn't even been able to see it, really.
I haven't even figured out which way the shutter moves on this one.. hm. Something to look at.
I'm not sure if i understood you right but the Shutter time was 1/1200 so i don't think that shaking should be a problem.
Also it's only partial, as you see the house is perfectly sharp!
Yeah, but CMOS sensors don't capture the image all at once. It's like a scanline renderer or an old CRT television, it starts at the top and works its way down to the bottom. That's what creates the "warping" effect on videos shot with cameras like this (you can Google it, it's typically called the "rolling shutter effect"). If you switch between the two photos you posted, there's clearly some pretty nasty distortion happening on one of them (probably the first one, with the blurring).
But, the bottom line is that you shouldn't see it at all, or it should be so slight as to be unnoticeable on a still frame shot. I've seen it on videos I've taken with my older phones, but never on a still shot, and never as bad as what I see in those shots you posted. I'm not sure if that's a problem in the software/firmware of the camera (in which case it can be fixed), or a problem with the CMOS sensor itself not actually capturing the image as quickly as it was supposed to.
Was there anything particular about these shots that was different from the norm? Were they captured in a batch, or just a single click? ZOE mode, or just straight up? The stock HTC camera app, or a third-party app? And is the phone ROMd? I don't think they've got the camera working quite right in most ROMs right now, although I don't know if the effect would be what you're describing.
Mind you, I don't know squat about actually fixing the issue, but I can hopefully help narrow it down to what's causing it.
Curse my not-having-the-phone-yet-edness. I'd test all this myself, but my One doesn't get here until tomorrow. I do intend on running the camera through its paces over the first week or so I have it, though.
same here
I have the same problem sometimes..
Thanks for your explaination. I also heard that the OIS may cause this.
And as there are a couple of people with the same issue (in this thread and over the net) maybe other users haven't experienced it YET and it's a software issue. I'm really quite unsure what to do.
The shots were taken with the original Camera app, without Zoe, with original non-rooted firmware, with normal automatic settings.
I've experienced this about 4 times now and i shot about 30-40 Pictures so far.
I've also had the problem a few times, and outdoors in daylight where shutter speed should be so fast add to negate slight hand movement. Also the blur will sometimes be in only half the picture... Odd.

I had the same issue with the camera. .. I spoke with htc advisors and they told me that is hardware problem(lense or focus). If you have problem try to take a video and look if it's all ok.. my was keep focusing on the right hand side every few seconds. ...so I send my phone back to them for repair.. waiting now ..

Yes, I'm less than impressed with mine - certainly nowhere near dslr level as they were touted. I get a lot of noise on mine and they are over exposed.
If you manually focus with camera button then take pic, results are somewhat better but still disappointing.
Could you please post some of the pics you've taken please? The reason I got rid of my LG Optimus G was because of the subpar camera, been waiting for the Z1, so I'd hope it's not a lateral move on the camera front

yeah same here...photos appear washed out in low light..also a lot of purple grains appear when attempting to take a photo in low light...for a flagship device which touts camera as its biggest selling point z1 is a massive disappointment...also the microphone did not work for me while connecting the phone to a headphone without a mike...ill be going to sony service centre on monday...hopefully they'll replace my unit..will update whether the other unit's camera is better...
Guys, do we have any informed update about the camera low quality issue? Is it an early release issue which will be fixed by an update or should I return my phone and get another one in a couple of months?
Please share your input because I am really skeptic about this otherwise excellent device.
Use Manual mode with Night setting
I've come across a lot of people complaining about the camera not giving out noise-free images like it's supposed to. The trick is to use manual mode. I agree, if you use Superior Auto mode, it's a miss most of the times, and when it does work, it gives a purple-ish tint at the corners.
However, If you use manual mode and select the SCENE to NIGHT, the images come out amazing and noise-free!
[DO NOT JUDGE THE IMAGE BY WHAT THE VIEWFINDER SHOWS YOU. A lot of things happen when you press the shutter button. The viewfinder simply goes red for making it easy to focus. The final image in the gallery is a hundred times better]
The Scene modes are one of the most commonly ignored settings.
I hope this helps!
Sorry. Most people just want to use auto mode and haven't got time to fiddle here and there.
The scenes help but they are not the cure in that the underlying problem of poor quality is there. I wonder if people who post either are using a different software version, or are being paid by Sony to post positive remarks.
Nor is it acceptable that we should resort to using alternative camera apps. This phone cost £600 or up to.
It should work as advertised on the tin.

Did anyone face auto-focus issues? Sometimes the camera stuggles to auo focus..
No focus issues on mine, just horrible, grainy images. really really unimpressed with the camera. If this is a firmware issue then I am really unimpressed that they saw fit to release it in this state.
Example's here - note the complete lack of any detail, the grainy over compressed background. Zoom in slightly and see the over sharpening that has been done, the bike frame goes jagged.
The camera was one of the reasons I bought this phone, and in its current state, I declare it 'unusable'

Hi Nigel,
I appreciate your frustrations. I have just moved onto the Z1 after holding onto my old but trust worthy Galaxy S2 and after the expense and hype surrounding the release feel let down by the camera as well. Suggestions seem that issues may be resolved once further firmware updates come about, not sure how soon these will happen though.

Some numpty then went and picked up some pics from some ancient ebay auctions on the same site, and claimed that I reckoned these were taken by the Z1. Know your facts Geoffxx !! You are making yourself look like a right amateur!
Since taking the pics in http://scratch.veletron.com/z1 , I have added some 100% crops of the same pics.
Oh, and its no good looking at the pics on your phone, if you want to see their true ugliness quality-wise, look at them on a PC.

[Q] Will the Lollipop update fix the terrible camera?

As we all know the sensor and lens on the Z3 are some of the best on the market right now. However, for some reason, Sony, who make maybe the best compact cameras out there, seems to have failed miserably in regard to the camera software in its phones. All photos come out with little detail, soft focus, artifacts and overprocessed. Do you think that will get fixed in 5.0(2)? Will the camera finally be comparable to, say, the Galaxy Note 4 or some of the Lumias?
Regards.
what terrible camera?
i'm no Ansel Adams, but i think the Z3c has a great camera, especially once you get the hang of it.

In theory yes. With Lollipop we will be able to take RAW images with the camera due to the new api. RAW images are unprocessed, straight from the sensor. The Sony camera sensor is good but the software image processing isn't. Taking photos in RAW eliminates the poor image processing so the images should be much much better.

I actually agree on this, especially when taking photos. All the other devices I used before my Z3 Compact did not try to focus again after I already touched focus a certain area, but my Z3C actually does so as I press the shutter button. It also has trouble trying to focus on really close objects, only able to get precise focus 1/10 of the time.
I personally use google camera for simple, clear, low-processed pictures. The drawback is that the photos cannot be saved on the sd card w/o root.
Or, you can very well use the manual mode - this one also is pulling some nice photos, w/o blur,

Atleast on the regular Z3 you can choose to save photos and videos on the sd card directly.
Camera, the three blocks, settings icons.
I'm currently playing around with the app ABetterCamera and so far images are taken faster and low light photos look much better. They have an option to choose where to store the photos and if you choose external card it gives you the message Android doesn't allow that...BUT there is an option to choose custom folder which I pointed to the SDCard and it worked!
Yeah I find the camera terrible too.
My dads Note 2 takes much better pictures. If I put them side by side at a certain distance and take a picture of a piece of paper, on one I can clearly read what is written on it, and on the other it's all blurrines. I didn't expect this camera to suck that big especially compared to such an old low-res camera.
If that was not enough, colors are much more innatural on the sony, while the note 2 reproduces them much better...

Unless you print out the pictures or look at them on the same screen it's really not possible to compare color reproduction from camera to camera.
Try ABetterCamera app, for me it takes better shots.

If you use the sony camera yes you can, but he was using Google camera that can't save to Sdcard.
Back camera is mostly ok. But the front camera is the worst! I cannot wait to sony fixes this soft skin efect bug. It's driving me nuts!!
I think the camera Lumia 925 that I had, much better than the camera's compact Z3. To be honest, the camera of this device did not please me so much.

You can actually turn the "soft skin effect" off in the menu and if you want better pictures from the front camera make sure the "HDR" option is always enabled.

Camera FV-5 is a better choice. It allows 100% JPG Quality, 100% Thumbnail quality AND uncompressed PNG format option for taking shots.

Regards.

I personally will not get my hopes up that Sony will do anything to the camera software to improve image quality just because 5.0 supports RAW format. Sony may not even include RAW support in their version of 5.0.
So many times, phone manufacturers pick and choose which features of android to implement or substitute that feature with their own.

The formal answer is "no" - it will NOT fix the poor image processing. RAW format is not supported by Sony in Android 5.0

That's sad, I had my hopes up that they would finally do something about it. How can a camera company make a phone camera so bad I can't understand.

You cannot. Try to turn it off, take a picture, then take a picture when it's on. There is apsolutely no difference.
camera is not terrible, doesn't need to be fixed. because iphone has better camera doesn't mean it's terrible, it's just second best after Gs5 in android (third after iphone)

Hardware is indeed great, but software is very bad, and since the combination of both make the picture, the camera needs to be fixed (software part).
I mean look at all the phones using SONY sensors, they take excellent pictures on AUTO. Z3? Nope, rarely. Manual is super, but sometimes you do not have the time to fiddle around with the settings. And no DNG RAW in 5.0.2? Well, totally wasted potential of this phone's camera.
I'm very disappointed with the Z3C camera too... I mean, considering the specs, I was hoping for a lot much better pictures.
I´ve just got mine, I did a lot of research before buying a new phone (I had a Note 2), and the main reasons why I bought this phone are: size/specs, battery life and camera. I also considered buying the Moto Maxx (Brazilian Droid Turbo variant) but the Z3C compactness (is this a word?) made me chose it and I'm kind of regretting it a little bit... lol
