So I just got a HTC one from ebay (maybe not a clever idea), set it all up, put my sim in and get signal (2-3 bars) and 3G data, but if i try and send a text it fails to send and if I try and make a call it never dials out.
I've never come across this problem before, does anyone here have any ideas?
Thanks in advanced
the phone is imei barred. I see this a lot where I work. That's the problem when buying from an unknown seller, it can happen. I would go back to the seller, and get your money back if possible.

IMEI barring should only happen on that specific carrier though.

Could be unlucky and using the same network as the seller on eBay :/
OP, do you have another SIM you could try just to make sure?
IMEI barring affects the phones behaviour to accept SIM cards, at least thats what happens in the UK, which is where the OP is from

Ah right. Cos from Googling and XDA, American IMEI blocking only applies to that particular telco and any other telco it shares their blacklist with, and in my country such a thing as IMEI blocking doesn't even exist
Really?!?!?! Thats pretty mental.

Sorry, I've been out today, you all seem sure it's an IMEI bar, I'll do a check later see if that comes up with anything
I thought the IMEI bar stopped the phone from getting signal full stop, not allowing 3g data, which works, I can load Web pages.

This may sound silly, but is your sim card a data only plan, like those given for tablet contracts?

Its a normal contract that I've used for over 12 months, works fine in my Gnex
Does anyone know of a free website to check the IMEI status for UK networks? Can only find Australian ones free.
Also, is it definitely an IMEI bar if I still get signal and can use the 3g data?

Last update on this, did a check via checkmend, and you are all correct. It has been IMEI blacklisted, so it will be returned.

Glad you found that it was IMEI barred, as for the data goes, yes it will still pick that up, the amount of times I've seen it with that fruit based company is stupid. Buying from CEX and wondering why it was barred. So easy done.

I can't text myself with Google Voice, and I've had several people ask me if I got their text that never went through. I can send just fine, but I don't seem to be receiving them. Is there any troubleshooting for this?
Edit: My calls also seem to be going straight to voicemail. I can make calls, though.
Get a new sim card. Happened on my TBOLT. They will NEVER figure out your problem. Just take it to Verizon and say my SIM card isnt working, I cant send/receive texts.
I can send them and make calls, though. I've also noticed that when I leave a voicemail though Google Voice I never get it.
Yup. Need a new SIM. You could also try reseating it. Its the SIM, trust me.

They are free, just ask for a new one. I went weeks on my TBOLT before they figured out the problem.. trust me it sucks..
Thanks for letting me know. Hopefully the folks at Verizon will be happy to hand it out. Should I unroot before taking it in?
i just started having the same issue as the OP....but it only does it to me while at my parents house in rural northwest oklahoma where i have to rely on roaming. Every other verizon phone i've had up there has been able to roam without problems, but this bionic cannot keep a steady 1x data connection up there and keeps giving me a popup message stating that i am data roaming and no longer in the USA and have to accept something o data roam outside the US...the second i drove back near a verizon tower bam i was hit with 22 text messages i had been missing throughout the day...i'm hoping this is something they are working on...

If I already have an extra 4G SIM card, can I install it and activate without going to a shop? How can I do this?

That I am not sure about.
Did any of you dial *228 when you got your phone? If so that will destroy your sim and can cause things like you are seeing now. Thats NOT what you do on these phones to update tower info.
Took it to Verizon, replaced the SIM, and it still didn't work. The Verizon people had to call their own support, and they couldn't fix it, so now they filed a support ticket to the upper level people to resolve it on their end. **** everything about this.

I've tried texting myself from Google Voice and having other people I know text me along with the Verizon support people. At this point, I believe that I can only receive texts from Verizon numbers, but I cannot receive calls from them.

Where is your number coming from? T-Mobile or did you port it to Google Voice before coming to VZW?

Okay, glad to hear your issue resolved itself.
I've seen alot of issues with porting numbers back from Google Voice which is why I asked when I saw it mentioned.
My wife likes her Captivate but never uses data capabilities. AT&T requires a data plan for any smartphone. Has anyone thought about making it emulate a dumb phone? Is it even possible? This would save me $15 a month by not using data. I would be willing to pay for instructions for such a mod.
This would be better in the q&a forum, not development.
No, you can't. Att uses the phones IMEI number to determine if data is needed.
Mod pm'd...
My wife is also on a captivate. She doesn't have a data plan. This is what I did. I backed up the efs folder on the external SD card and I also put a copy on my computer for safe keeping. Delete the efs folder on the sdcard. Then reboot the phone. You look at the imei number it will be a generic number. Hence non detectable by atts systems. She's had it for about six months and no data plan yet.

Do you mean that you want to use the phone as it is without the internet plan?
If yes, go to Settings >Wireless and networks > Mobile networks . uncheck the Use packet data box
Advantage in this method is that you can hop on a wifi network when it is available.
If you mean you want to fool AT&T network to recognize your captivate as a non-smartphone and continue to use the dataplan, I believe this forum doesn't allow such discussion.
Not that I know anything, but couldn't you wipe the phones EFS data and replace it with a "dumb phones" information?
Like I said I know nothing. I don't suggest you do this, or anything like it for that matter.
FWIW, I bought a Captivate on EBay (put Pinnacle on it), put my wife's SIM in it and she uses it without any requests from ATT to get a data plan...
If you want to make the phone look dumb, you could just paint/theme it to look like an iPhone.

It's not illegal to ask questions (which this is the wrong thread to do that by the way @ OP), and nobody has broken any laws its just web chat. Informing someone how to do something is not against the law, freedom of speech corrects that. I can tell you exactly what to do to rob a bank, but you won't be charged for robbing one until you do it. Talk of terroism, treason, or any communicative threat...now that is illegal.

I was answering his question. Changing the phone's IMEI is illegal...

But will it still function as a phone if it has an unknown IMEI?
Suppose I call AT&T to cancel her data plan and re-activate her old Motorola Razr, then take the SIM out of the Razr and put it in the Captivate? Could they still tell I was using a Captivate if I disable data on it?

Without changing the imei, yes.
I bought my Captivate from AT&T last year and not once have they questioned me about not having a data plan. I had an LG Incite before that without a data plan. Maybe I simply lucked up but I'm not complaining.

you need data plan only when buying phone from at&t. if you bought captivate from ebay/somewhere else then you can just put in the sim card and use it without getting data plan

Which part? If they can add a tethering plan or drop people from unlimited data, they can add a data plan to your line if they gave proper reason to do so. Check the Terms of Service.
So I purchased an LTE Galaxy Tab about 3 weeks ago and have been tossed all around by At&t customer service Samsung customer service and just about anyone else who could possibly know anything. I work for a retailer have have talked through my inventory director to an inside Samsung rep as well.
The problem is that whenever I drive further than say 5 miles (or 8ish km) the tablet will drop the signal and I will have to restart or cycle airplane mode to get it back. This happens regardless of wifi conditions or signal strength. I have tried 3 different SIM cards and also done an exchange for a new device. I haven't sold any of these to see if someone else has had this issue. Anyone else having this problem?

I've had 2 of them do this with and without root from day one. Is re-flashing really going to do anything?
Here is some more info. Samsung customer support told me to re-create the stock APN and see if that would work. Well the tablet won't stay on any other APN except the default. i have also tried a "pta" APN (like on the skyrocket) and the "phone" APN (just HSPA+).
I cannot seem to get my T mobile Note 3 to work on ATT LTE. I used the settings under APN that has been posted on this forum to no avail. I just get a circle with a line through it. Thus far all I can get is 4G using APN Cingular.WAP.
thanks.
