Hi . Can someone tell me how close their camera can get to anything before going out of focus . As mine will not get any closer than about 15 cm before getting blurry . I cannot take pictures of any text close up .

Have you tried using the Macro setting from the menu?
EDIT: Yep, looks like you're right... hmmm... If it's just readability you're going for, you can always use the digital zoom slider to zoom in. The text looks fine, but the background's a little (a lot) grainy.
Have tried a few things to make it better. The macro shots I get are useless. Any object is totally out of focus until i move about 20 cm away .
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Can anyone else verify this as macro mode is useless to be honest and need to know if it's just mine that is faulty or it is the way the camera is .
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
With macro on i can get as close as 45-50mm
John.
It depends on what you're trying to get a picture of. Certain things with certain lighting will be easier/harder for the camera to focus on.
I just tried it for myself. From one angle I couldn't focus very close. Maybe around the distance the OP was saying. From a different angle, with the light bringing out details better, I was able to get much closer. If my first attempt was about 10-15cm, maybe my second attempt got around 5cm

I'll get some examples of how mine is over the weekend and post them . I'm not trying to push the limits of the camera. Just can't even focus on normal size fonts on say a bank statement for example .
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
This is how things come out about 20 cm away . I wouldn't say it's much better 30 cm away . Is this normal . ?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
It just doesn't seem to want to focus close up but rest looks ok . Doesn't matter how I take the picture it happens .
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Can someone please post some pictures to compare . Would be grateful for some to compare some close ups . Thanks

On mine it is no perfect but looks better:
This has been shooted at 5-6 cm of distance, mine can focus properly.. Someone decompiled camera.apk and the focal length is set to 5cm,over that will not focus ..
Done in artificial light, macro mode

here is a small test I did with my HONE and I'm kinda pissed, 5cm no focus, 6cm no focus, 7cm no focus, 8cm almost focus and then 9cm clear focus all on macro mode.
Perhaps my handset is defective?

Yeah me too, did some tests with real mesurment and when I'm really close I get quite the same results as you Cynikal
I was right about 10-15 cm away . Just over did it a bit saying as far as 30 cm . But have had bad experiences at 20 cm at times .

Depends a lot also on rom
I noticed a important improvment on 4.2.2
The focal distance is 5cm,so is software related, and i can focus from that distance on 4.2.2
I have tried most roms on my phone with not that much difference to be honest . There is no way I can get to 5cm with any useable results . I know this may seem a minor problem but I need to use this for work to take pictures of part numbers . My one x and incredible s used to be able to handle these distances even in low light conditions .

Not a big fan of the camera neither, I can't figure out how to take clear pics. Many pics isn't sharp.
I have 3 different camera apps and none of them is good on inside photo..
I have the original app, camera zoom fx and lgcamera, where lgcamera is the worst. Only on auto focus the camera actually focus (original). Still I get pics that isn't sharp.
I'm on 10f... For me it seems like it got worse after the latest update...

Yes..
In the original camera app there's only auto and face reckoning...
In camera zoom fx it won't focus in fixed mode, macro and infinity just taking the pic with ones. Lgcamera is the same and camera360 focused a bit (macro)..

I don't think it's bad and I don't really have any problems with focusing. I just touch the screen where i want to focus and when it is focused I press the the shutter button (or volume button).
I also had the N8 (well 3 actually) and woow I liked that camera, though I had problems with the screen, pink tint and things like that. After the third phone I took the money back. It would have been very nice if the N8 was an android phone.

I recommend u to use Camera ICS+, I purchased it and it works perfect for me. You may try the free version, which is Camera ICS, it is actually the google stock camera with some mods, but I personally think it is even better than the stock LG camera app, hope u enjoy it.:good:
I use lgCamera, both free and pro version can provide better pictures with ISO and focus control, but sometimes it cannot save picture properly (resulted in picture without thumbnail)

If this has been posted already, my apologies! i've been reading in the forums for months now and haven't seen it posted yet unless it came and went down the list faster then i could see it.
so the main issue seems to be, after taking a few pictures over time the camera app just freezes with the LED on like a flashlight and won't take another picture. until i found this google code submission
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=40996
i've always had to reboot my phone just to take pics again. it's been embarassing when in public with friends i've bragged to about this phone... its a good laugh thats for sure, but not what i expect out of this phone. has any of you experienced this? do you guys on custom roms have this issue? is this a google code issue only or are all roms experiencing this issue? i haven't rooted yet as i always wanted to take updates automatically and stay up to date, but with this camera issue i'm in the process of rooting right this minute but want to make sure its worth my hassle.
discuss.
I've had this issue as well. It only seems to affect the stock app though as other camera apps continue to function. A reboot is the only way is been able to fix this bug.

It happened to me for the first time on New Year's Eve but happened three times. The app reset when I either closed it from the recent apps list or switched to video camera and then back to regular camera. Not sure what caused it and hasn't happened since.

So what you're trying to say is whenever you try to repetitively take photo, camera freezes with led light on? Never happened to me. Then again, I barely use my camera
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I've had this happen as well, although I don't think I needed to reboot, just closed the app and it stopped. But I've had this happen several times, not recently though. I'm very disappointed with the camera on this thing, it seems to take lack luster photos and the app is very fritzy and the rotation animation awful, as well as this occasional glitch.

that's exactly what I'm saying. I take a lot of pics especially when we go out. it does it all the time... it just freezes with the led stuck in. I can hit home but when I reopen it and take a pic it gets stuck in again. I just read I can switch to video and back and it should work, but that's annoying. my girlfriends gnex just works and she always laughs at me when it happens.
question, does this happen on anyone's rooted nexus with custom rom?

Happens to me all the time. The camera app on here is pretty disappointing. I don't get it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I just got it to produce that problem and I see what you mean by annoying. One easy solution that I heard people using is using a third party camera app. Try a free camera app and tell us how it goes. Tried to reproduce the problem with camera zoom fx and couldn't do it. Also I believe this is a problem with terrible auto focus of nexus 4. Because when this happens the focus ring looks like as if it's still trying to focus into a object. Hopefully this gets fixed with software update. Cheers
BTW, using a rooted stock nexus 4 with Franco kernel and camera mod that'll increase the quality of the image and video.

Me too and I've now "Starred" the bug.
Hopefully everyone here has too so it gets noticed by Google.
Same issue. Experienced it for the first time on New Year's Eve. Both my Nexus 4 and my wife's had the same thing happen. Only happened to mine once. Happened to hers about 3 or 4 times.
Used the camera the most on New Year's compared to any other time so that's possibly why I never experienced it until then.
Happened twice when asking strangers to take pics of us too, which was extremely annoying and embarrassing.
The LED flash stays on and you can't take any pics. Closing the app and swiping it from recents and reopening does nothing. The same thing will happen on the next try. Need to reboot the phone. It's the only fix.
My phone did this on new years eve too.

Happened the same to me more then once. I don't use the camera that much but when I really need it doesn't work.

Try the Camera Zoom FX app. When I say amazing control, I mean AMAZING control of the camera. ISO, tap to focus and shoot, programmable hardware buttons for shutter/gallery etc...
The ability to control ISO means you can get rid of noise for stills/landscapes in almost any light. It works great. Furthermore, the pictures appear to be better from this app. When I started the app, I played around with it and thought "hey this is great, I have control over each shot, but the quality of the picture in auto mode appears the same as stock." Then I found in somewhat hidden "All Settings" menu a SAVE menu which was defaulted to 85% for jpeg output. I put it on 100% output and the pics look very good if not better than stock. The hardware is decent in this thing so the pics should be good. Take a look at the app and try it out for a few minutes to test it.
Disclosure: I have NO financial or personal interest in the company or developer of this app. But I do have a personal interest in photography.
I notice on the nexus device camera you have to hard press and hold the camera button and wait until the dialer lock into place. its a twisting dialer that goes from left to right from 9pm to 12. There is a green light at 12 o clock. You have to let go of the shutter button when the dialer hit 12 o clock. Simply just slightly tapping the camera shutter button cause the screen to get a lil out of focus but it produces a clear shot also.....try it out.
for better color reproduction in day light use -1 in the iso/ white balance /exposure setting
In low light use these settings. Turn on flash....change the iso/white balance to -2. pics should use way less light and get better pics

in day light hold down the camera shutter button. The dialer should start at 9 oclock. as you hold down on the shutter button the dialer moves to 12 olock when it reaches 12 oclock the dialer turn green. release the camera shutter button at 12 oclock....
The big circle is the dialer
I noticed that i get a better color reproduction with -1 in the camera ios/white balance setting....
In low light use these settings. Turn on flash....change the iso/white balance to -2. pics should use way less light and get better pics
Dialer is the Focus Circle !
kinda confusing when you refer dialer as focus circle. By holding the shutter button you're forcing focus to stay locked on.. Just like on any regular camera(PNS,DSLR) Phone Shooters come with continuous auto-focusing which is kinda annoying... always preferred single focus over continuous but then again single focus would be terrible with video..
Nice find :good::good::good::good:
I always do this when taking pics. Even on the s3 I would hold the shutter button til focus locked in instead of just tapping it then focus isn't 100%

so you're saying that exposure compensation menu also controls ISO? like 2 in 1? because ISO it's the other thing which weirdly cannot be adjusted manually as well as metering.
I think Galaxy S line (2-3 and 4) have those for manual adjustment. I can live without ISO adjustment no problem.. anything above 400 looks terrible anyway. But Google Or LG had to put Metering mode for a proper exposure...At least N4 got HDR mode as workaround

Hey there, As I said in the other topic, your phone seems to be defect, I suggest switching it with a new one.
Has anybody else noticed that you can zoom only up to a certain extent i pics, I guess only to 100% of thr pic size. Sometimes the photos are very hard to view so I need more zoom. I searched a lot and the only thing I found out is changing accessibility settings and tripple tapping to zoom. This isn't a real solution to the problem, as it's very ugly and not practical. Does anyone know any mod to enable more zooming?

Thats a good question! i was never impressed with the camera on the HTC One and let alone the zoom. I had to pull the photos off and use Adobe Photoshop to zoom to the level i needed for detail. Doubt this is what you want to do but, if worse comes to worse.
FYI - HTC work on a better camera on these phones
The way HTC handles zooming in the gallery is by it's resolution. In order to zoom in to a photo more is by using a 3rd party gallery

Doesn't anyone understand there is no zoom? The so called zoom is the same as cropping, which is limited by the resolution. Lower megapixels = lower level of cropping before pixelation

I'm pretty sure he's referring to zooming to photos he has saved on his phone or photos he is viewing on Facebook. I realize these phones don't have zoom and only digital zoom which is essentially the same as cropping. What he is trying to do is trying to bypass the limitations that HTC implementated to the zooming level on the photos he is viewing

Did you ever read my question? I was pretty clear I am talking abour SAVED photos, not camera app. I have had many phones, but this is the first that limits the zooming so much, it's absurd. My old Sensation can zoom up to 300%. I think HTC had done this because of the ****ty resolution of the camera

This limitation was set even before this phone with its ultrapixel camera. I believe it was implemented starting on the HTC one X series including the evo lte but I could be wrong. You can try aosp the zoom limitation isn't there
