[Q] Why is rooting impossible! - Motorola Atrix HD

I have another post named How Should I Root but I tried everything there and no success. Here is my problem:
I got an Atrix HD used that had AT&T but unlocked it for T-mobile. I then decided it would be fun to root right? WRONG! I tried every damn way possible and got nothing! Skeevydude provided me with two links:
1) http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/19962-script-droid-razr-hd-utility-121-windowsmaclinux/
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226527
The first one didn't work at ALL I ran everything to the T and all i got was failed attempts.
The second one spent like 20 minutes waiting for my device meanwhile my phone was booted into fastboot and connected to my laptop.
I have no idea what to do. Should I try Samba method? I mean my phone won't even boot up normally. If i turn it off and turn it on it goes immediately into fastboot mode. And the phone won't even recognize signal at all. It only logs into wifi. No service what so ever.
UPDATE: Phone boots normally. Still no service
UPDATE 2: Phone is finally unlocked and rooted after 10 hours! Still no signal but will flash a custom ROM or stock to see if it works.

If your bootloader is unlocked and you have access to a Windows machine, you could try this to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262726.

I think you can root without an unlocked bootloader. Try this for rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40111716

I don't know why your having so much trouble. I've taken 3 Atrix hds from the box and had them running pacman in under an hour each time.

You could try and reflash a stock rom using Myth Tools on a Windows machine to try and get your phone to boot normally, then try rooting/unlocking again.

Update
Phone is now booting up into normal boot. I don't know how that happened but it did. Still no service though.

Check your APNs

Guys please I am really desperate here. I'm on my 9th hour trying to fix this phone and it aint working. I can't get service for the life of me. I know that if I flash the stock ROM it can potentially fix the phone but how am i supposed to do that with no root and no unlocked bootloader. All the root methods have failed for me and I don't have access to a Windows pc

I was waiting till I was finished everything before updating this but I finally got root and unlocked my boot loader. The problem was that my root commands weren't sticking and my phone kept getting on the sticky fastboot. Now all I have to do is fix the damn service since it's still not up. Should I go ahead and download cwmr and a custom ROM? Maybe that can help?

Please help. Phone not bricked but cant root

Good Evening everyone. As the title says i need help.
I have had my phone rooted fine in the past but went ahead and did the .893 update wich is where something went screwy. It booted fine after doing the .893 update however after doing a reboot it would not boot. just stayed at the M dual core. I think something went wrong on the update because all my apps were still there when it did boot.
So i tried doing a return to stock using the RSD lite program..that fails right away no matter what i do.
So i went and tried to do the One click fastboot system restore program.
Now when i did that the INFOpreflash validation failure showed up however everything else went through fine. the phone reboots and everything works just not great the signal strenght is very low.
The version that got installed says 5.5.1_84_dbn-55. So i try Pete's root method and it go thru to step 2 but then fails at rebooting for the second time saying it could not get root via local.prop.
If anyone could please help me get back to normal stock it would be much appreciated
Not to be a jerk, but did you READ any thread on here before you did this??
1) Unless you used p3droid's forever root method, you're done. No root.
2) Wrong forum - should be in general
3) RSD won't work.
4) I don't feel sorry for you. You should have researched more. If you would have taken the time to read a few threads, you would have known the answers before you did this.

And i also have googled this but cannot find an answer hence why i am asking on here..all options i have found to try to reroot have failed

Well, you didn't list that in the OP.
At this point, I don't know. Here is all I got: enter stock recovery and wipe everything. Reboot. Cross your fingers.

Breathe in, breathe out!!!!
I'll breathe when this .893 goes through and I keep root
There is also some very seriously contradictory info in the OP. While castigating him for being a noob did anyone notice that he claims to have flashed the update and then reverted to stock?
This is impossible from our current understanding of how the bootloader works.
More information about the exact steps followed and the exact results at each step would be very helpful to try and figure out what really happened.
OK?
Less heat and more light...
I just got a little frustrated, as every time I open XDA today I see the same/similar post.
Cell - I didn't see in the OP where he said he flashed back. I read where he tried, but I didn't see any mention of 896.
I could not get the .893 to boot after a reboot so i used the One-click fastboot restore and root which brought back to stock but also made it so that i can no longer root. It fails every time on the local.prop process saying adb could not get root access. I did try the stock recovery and still no go. I also tried the adb fix that was posted to remove local.prop but when i tried it says file not found. I have rooted and messed with many phones in the past from Droid 1 and up and this is the first problem that i couldnt solve so as i said any help would be appreciated.
Oh and i have also tried to unroot it..it also fails at adb not being able to gain root access

This isn't going to help your current issue, but how long did you let it sit (after installing 893) before you decided it wouldn't boot? I ask because the guy who was ballsy enough to do it here said the first boot takes about 7 minutes.
EDIT: Nevermind - mine booted in 2 minutes.
it was fully booted and operational. i just did a power off after a half our or so and power back on and it just sat at the M dual core screen...i dont know why it would not boot. I tried pulling the battery. taking out the sim card and all that. the only thing that would get it booted was the One-click fastboot restore and root program so I at least have a working phone but for some reason the signal strength is horrible

Try to do the fastboot again and root it through there. Or, if you did that already (root in fastboot restore) try rooting afterwards.
Might sound dumb, but did you forget to save the chmod changes to the build file? It's a fairly easy mistake and it is the only thing I can think of.

IIRC, you should just be able to `adb pull /system` to get the important bits. It's not a full dump, but I think you need root level access for that. And the only way I know how to get root access is to flash a zip through recovery, and TWRP/CWM hasn't yet been released for the First.
I couldn't disable LTE but I don't see why I would, the battery is awesome. Can't dump anything right now I'm out. Am I the only person with this phone already?

So in all seriousness, I have the First, I have the bootloader unlocked via htcdev.com, I'm rather familiar with adb and fastboot, and I would love to upload a system dump if someone can tell me what commands to run.
I'm trying `adb pull /system` right now, but it's getting "permission denied" on some files, so I don't know how useful that will be. I've also tried looking around online, but just about everything I find is assuming that you already have a custom recovery or a rooted system; nothing wants to tell me how to get myself to that state from scratch, and I'm very hesitant to just start flashing stuff at random without a proper image dump to fall back to.
Anyone have a good idea where to start?

Humor me for a moment, if you will. Connect your device to your computer and run `adb root`. You should get a permission denied error of some sorts. I'm curious to see if Facebook is shipping with root enabled.

That's what I figured would happen! It looks like this may be an option to root the 4.1.2 build. It worked on the One S and the Nexus 7, which gives me hope.

No good, but thanks for providing the link. The only shot we have left is waiting for the RUU to be leaked so we can pull recovery out of it, and get a CWM/TWRP made from it.
What is RUU and how does that help us? Sorry, just coming from a Nexus-only world, so I'm not familiar with modern HTC/Samsung devices.
Sent from my HTC first using xda premium
RUU stands for ROM Update Utility and is a Windows executable file that can flash and restore a HTC device. There are ways to extract binaries from this file, and if there are no root exploits that will work on this phone, we will need to extract the original recovery.img from that RUU to build a custom recovery, in which at that point allows us to flash SuperUser.apk to get root.

RUUs for the HTC One were first available on March 26, just about a month after its announcement (and, oddly, a few weeks before it's general release). Since these have to be leaked by HTC, there's no telling when we will see those. Is there any chance another root exploit exists in stock Android 4.1.2 that we could exploit in order to get root?

[Q] Accidentally installed GSM ROM on CDMA Sprint HTC One

A couple of days ago I thought it would be a GREAT idea to install a GSM ROM (Android Revolution HD) on my Sprint HTC One. I am now able to go into the recovery and flash a different ROM, but the ROM will boot up but shut down several seconds after reaching the home screen. I have been told that using an RUU might help, but will that work even if my computer doesn't recognize my phone as a USB device? All help is appreciated

Maybe you screwed your radio but i'm not sure this is the answer to your problems... To be able to run a RUU your pc MUST recognize your phone in fastboot mode.
I repaired a friends device that did the same thing. When it boots you will see a lock screen with no wallpaper and then it will shutdown.
An RUU is the ONLY way to fix it.

There's nothing special about an RUU, it's just a self extracting archive that uses fastboot to flash stuff.
It can be done by hand, such as with a nandroid backup.

If you have S-OFF it will...
These instructions are for the Sprint variant only
You will need to be unlocked and have twrp installed for this to work (I'm posting this here because of my work schedule if you need further assistance PM back hopefully you and Matt can get it working )
1. Follow this guide Guide - Get s-off on 1.31 HTC One (Sprint) Update:
You will get a failed warning after issuing the echo blah blah command this is normal and nothing to be worried about and after the echo command type exit to exit the adb shell and continue.
2. Get the RUU here click the first link in the thread(extract it to your desktop/open it and click setup it will scan your device,go thru the various screens reading the warnings and checking the boxes, once it starts it will take 10-20 minutes to complete) once it's done you will be back to completely stock.
Optional:
Use revone to gain s-off (if you go with this option once you are s-off you won't need to use HTC-Dev to unlock your bootloader because revone does it for you) A sidenote about revone it will fail several times just press the UP arrow on your keyboard to issue the same command and press enter.Watch the cmd window for instructions to reboot and continue.
or flash a Sprint rom from the Sprint forum
Any other questions or concerns post here or PM me

Bigdaddy please push to make this a separate sticky in here.
Also, could you post a warning/guide in the international forum?
Would be appreciated.

[Q] How would you root? I'm on day FOUR of unsuccessful attempts

It started here:

I followed this post.

Got nowhere because of the puttytel window timeout problem.

I have an unlocked bootloader on Moto X from sprint. I just need the easiest way to root.
This looked confusing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536200. Gotta be another way.
Have considered restoring to stock and taking the dang thing back http://atsgadgets.com/how-to-restor...lite-att-t-mobile-sprint-verizon-us-cellular/. So frustrated.
I've offered paypal to those who can do it successfully. I am so burnt out on trying to make this work. This PITA is not worth android. I have a one click jailbroken phone now. And I have successfully rooted and installed custom roms before but this is totally out of hand how complex this is for me. Maybe I'm just remedial but it seems several are having trouble with this model. For open source, this should not be this tough.
/rant. Almost ready to throw in the towel, but still listening.....
Sorry for the multiple posts. Just trying to get some new opinions. HTC Evo 4 g was done in 10 minutes. This has taken 4 days.

Here, go into Settings -> About Phone and tell me what your Build Number is (at the very bottom).
Do not put in the cmd window mfastboot, just try fastboot flash recovery twrp 2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img. Now also put the recovery image in the same folder as fast boot, I believe its SDK tools folder

The method that you thought was confusing, is the one you should use. If I have time, I could try helping you with it.

Plug in your phone and put it into fastboot by typing adb reboot bootloader then type fastboot devices does it show that you are connected?
I will try that as soon as I can and get back to you. I have two computers one at my hotel and one here. I'm not sure I have the ADB tools on my netbook

especially since he already unlocked the bootloader. Just flash recovery, then flash supersu.zip.

ya during his four days of misery, he could have just read for 1 hour on the stuff so it would seem confusing anymore and then he would have had a rooted phone. But either way, his problem is solvable with a few simple instructions.
OK Jay/Aooga.
Finally back from work.
Plug in your phone and put it into fastboot by typing adb reboot bootloader then type fastboot devices does it show that you are connected?
open cmd window, typed adb reboot bootloader, and got:
T063202TFL and fastboot, and then a prompt.

Phone is in fastboot mode with white, yellow green text.
Device is unlocked. Status code 3.
Battery OK Charging
Transfer mode USB connected.
It looked as though I had to be able to accept the 4.4 kitkat OTA in order to get this done. but when i went to the usual spot to look for system updates it said there were none available.
Anyhow, I am super grateful for your help. Sorry to be such a remedial doofus
Looks like we can wait till tomorrow. Or today. Or whatever timeline it is.

I'm helping a friend on the same situation.
Phone doesn't boot.
Stuck on M logo.
Locked bootloader.
Able to go to AP fastboot
No custom recovery.
Particularly this is my first time dealing with a motorola phone. Have flashed HTC and have owned mostly samsung phones.
But I know my way a bit on adb and fastboot.
Anyways I'll keep an eye on this thread and let you know if I find something on my own.
I'll try with RSDLite, Myth tools and fastboot.
Maybe one of them will work.
Good luck.

From fastboot, I recommend unlocking the bootloader, install Philz, and flash a custom KK ROM.
Manual fastboot didn't work. Always stuck on flashing boot.img and system.img
The same happen on that step in rds lite and myth tools.
Phone said can't downgrade or something like that.
So I haven't had any luck yet.
Open to suggestions.
