[Q] Battery Apps not updating on lockscreen - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there...
I have been using my Lumia 620 for a month now. But, I still haven't understood one thing.
I tried installing around 3-4 Battery apps so that I can see my battery status on the lockscreen. None of them update themselves, even after many hours.
However, when I keep my data or wifi connection ON, I can see them updating every 30 min.
So, my questions are:
1. Do all battery apps require internet to update battery status on lockscreen?
2. Why does it work that way when apps on other platforms like android can update the same offline?? Is there any workaround?

1) Yes
2) Because Android allows apps to run in the background forever. That in itself lowers your battery anyway. WP only allows background tasks at a specified interval to save battery and increase lifespan of hardware.

Thank you
Do you think an update can change this? I mean status of battery can be obtained from the phone itself right?? So the app can update the status every 30 min, without a data connection...

Right now, it updates sooner using the data connection.
It should work with every 30 mins update offline.

[Q] Battery Drainage cannot be stopped!

I need help with my battery drainage, I cannot seem to track down what is the cause of my problems here. While at work I get a drain of anywere from 30-40 percent in about 5-6 hours! now that seems like ALOT.
I've tried stock, CM 6 R2, and Enom - I am on a custom kernel (2.6.35-925mV-CFS-SVS-720p-Monks-081010).. I am currently on that kernel and Enoms latest rom.
I've tried many things I've found on this forum. I installed "ShutUpBatterySaver", I removed my task manager, removed TiKL (heard it wasted battery while not in use), uninstalled ALOT of apps that I dont use/need just in case, Installed OSMonitor and watched to make sure nothing is using the CPU while its trying to sleep (I get less than 10 percent in use at any given time while the phone should be idle from android system mostly), I've stopped using live wallpapers and made sure my auto dim setting is on..
I'm not sure what else to do here Please Help!!
Thanks

Your system is using 10% cpu while the phone is IDLE??? Yeah, that's not right. Mine is in the noise (<1%) when idle.

me too the battery life on n1 sucks for me... i would unplug it then when i get to work on idle i turn it on it drops like 10 -15 percent in about an hour or so...??
Here is what I did.
1. Try to use black themes. I installed black desire bar and use black wallpaper.
2. Install SetCPU and set it to "on demand"
3. Change Wifi sleep policy to never.
4. Turn off autosync and use Shutupbatterysaver (This app automatically closes even after adding to task manager ignore list)
5. Remove widgets that auto refresh.
6. I'm using the same kernel as yours.
I also have **** battery life. Is it almost a must to calibrate the battery if you want to achieve good battery life?
Some people comment about how they have 36 hours of battery life OVERCLOCKED. If only my battery could come remotely close to that!
Unplugged my phone 1.25 hours ago and I'm already at 92%!
Edit: hmm, it tells me that my phone has been awake for 28 of the 75 minutes which is essentially impossible. Is there an issue where the phone takes too long to sleep?
I just recently got some very good usage out of my battery. Over night it only dropped something like 4%.
I'm not sure exactly what to attribute to as I've tried so many ROMS etc recently but the main things are probably
Installed SetCPU and set to 245min 500max
When in wifi location connect to it for data sync instead of 2g/3g as it uses less power when idle.

Something you're running is keeping it awake.. Most likely you have online/syncing/notifications on IM, Facebook, Twitter, something like that... Not the apps themselves, but them set to sync etc..
Spare Parts should be able to tell you what's keeping it awake.
What's UID 10018?

Some details I forgot origionally:
1. I have a black theme and my wallpaper is dark not black though
2. SetCPU is not installed but via spare parts I have my max at 107520 and govenor is on demand
3. My Wifi policy is never
4. i tried shutupbatterysaver and switched to juice defender but will probably switch back
5. I removed all widgets that auto refresh except the facebook widget (set to never refresh but it does anyway for some reason), and beutiful home widget set to update weather every 6 hours.

Here is a bit of my partial wake usage: Android system (Most), UID 10020, Dialer, Facebook, TiKL (anyone know what that is?), then News and Weather (I never use this not sure why its there), JuiceDefender, Handcent SMS.
OTher Usage shows: Running 54.9%, Screen on 27.1%, Phone on 15.9%, Wifi On 90.1%, Wifi Running 49.6% - All since last boot

In the process of calibrating my battery by draining it COMPLETELY (as in I can't even access the bootloader) and then charging it fully. I'll let you know if that helps!
Seems as if it's helped quite a bit. I managed to boot up, deal with the phone for a few minutes and download a 65MB file over WiFi and when I unlocked I was still at 99%. Try re-calibrating.
Try removing handcent. I used on my g1 and out was a serious battery hog.

Samsung Galaxy S Battery Drain

Hi,
im having battery drain problems the phone wont last more than 5-6 hours send 20-30 texts listen to some music, i have turned off backgroud data and live wallpapers, im using something called advanced task killer free to kill the apps that are running, but i close them the re open the task bar and stuff like music player has reopened
ive also seen a post about which batterys are better is there a better one i can buy? my batterys a G7
any ideas ?
cheers
Stop using the task kiler and you'll probably see better battery life. Task killers have been proven more harmful than helpful on the newer versions of android so using it is pointless. Also pay attention to what you have synced and how often. tons of web apps synching will drain the battery faster, as will having the gps and wifi turned on--if you're not using them, disable them.
thanks for the reply i will remove the task manager,
auto sync is turned off and i only use email by refreshing the inbox
Come here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884816
In short: Have you recently updated via Kies to JPY version? If so, stop using your wifi. There is a bug with wifi with this newest firmware.
hi,
i update to 2.2.1 through kies
Do you use wifi?
If yes, switch to data, battery life will be better. You should be able to get around 48h of light active usage (i mean browsing and calling and what not) with 3g data on.
i dont really use the wifi, signals really good around me, i only got the phone friday, brought it of a friend,
charged the phone fully before i went out last night about 7pm by 1.30am the phone had cut off, that was only using the facebook andriod app and sending text messages.
Than there is something terribly wrong. Do a wipe and factory reset, if you didnt after getting a device from your friend.. It seems that some application misbehaves and drains battery.
You can check it by typing *#*#info#*#* in dialer
Several options there, if there is something strange you will see it. (suggest looking into Battery history, usage statistics)
i dont know how to type in dialer sorry sounds very stupid all i have are digits

Have you tried reconditioning your battery yet?

About my battery life:
Previously I was on Darky's v5, with that the phone lasted 2-3 days with normal usage.
After flashing to v7 (with 100% battery) I also got the fast drainage problem. Here is what I did:
1) Turn OFF phone
2) Charge till it says it is FULL
3) Start in RECOVERY
4) WIPE battery stats
5) RESTART android (yes, it might already be on 98% or so)
6) USE phone heavily. Don't worry if it drops too fast. Use it till the Android system turns OFF automatically (it happens when your battery is below 1% - for me the phone was on 1% for about 40 mins. This is where it heavily myscalculated
7) PLUG IN your charger, TURN ON android and wait till it is FULLY charged again. (It is better if you don't use the phone at this charging up)
Now, after you disconnect the charger, you should still have 100% for some time (I've been using the phone for 32 mins - writing this post - and it is still on a hundred percent) and with this, I got back the 2-3 days battery life with normal usage.
Also, you should set WiFi to: "Never when plugged in" and by default I disable Data Network. But my phone is using WiFi all the time so it doesn't really matter
So to summerize this method, the key is to show the phone the battery's minimal capacity too, by using it till it is on null. Because with charging to 100% than wiping or flashing only introduces the maximum capacity to the system and the minimum is only guessed. THIS gives the faulty reportes and makes us think the phone drains too fast.
Try this method, than feel free to share your results

Same problem
hi
I have the same problem. I bought it 2-3 days ago. today i charged it full while fone was off, switched on at around 8AM my usage detail was
3g was on
gmail on sync
skype on sync
5-10 min of skype calling
5 min of normal calling
5-10 min of facebook browsing through android app
30 min of chatting on skype
at 2PM the fone was at 20% battery. My wifi and gps were off all day.
is there anything i can do to get atleast 15 hours of battery with normal use
regards
harris
If you are having issues with your battery, before you try killing tasks, changing setting and what not and especially if you are running custom ROMs, then you need to recondition your battery. The same goes for anyone who is having high drain issues.
If you follow the steps I posted from someone else's post and then find that your battery is not having issues, then start looking at your modem (if using a custom ROM or you've upgraded to new firmware).
ive done a factory restore, ive found what my usage says idle 4% the display 80%
contrast is switched right down
i know im not using any custom roms im using the firmware that you download through kies

When data network deactivated phone die after 2 days!
I installed whatsapp, gtalk and one email account with 10 mins refresh.
I never use wifi.
Drain 7 - 8 % per hour when phone idle (Phone on with 3g data but without using it)
I really don't know how to "finger pointing" suspicion app via battery history.

'How To Get Better Battery Life' tips and tricks

I haven't seen one of these threads yet, and I think it will benefit users of our D4 forum.

Here's the biggest....Widgets and Social Networks.
Watch your widgets (weather, news, facebook, etc..) that update/refresh. Most will allow you to adjust the refresh time. Set it high or to manual refresh.
Social Networks.....set them to refresh only. You don't need them refreshing their data in the background, just have them pull the latest down when you are actually using them (Facebook, Twitter, Google +, etc..). Set to manual refresh so that they only refresh when you are using the app. You don't need the latest status messages your friends are posting hitting your phone when it's in your pocket.
WiFi and. 3G/4G.....if you are in a location that makes your phone drop/search for signal and WiFi is available....use WiFi. The constant searching/seeking and establishing a 3G/4G network connection will kill your battery faster than having a constant 4G connection. This leaves the cellular band free for calls and all your apps that sync/pull data from the internet can happily run over the WiFi connection instead of killing your battery.

I second this, keep your widgest, number of home screens, and social networking apps down. Phones haven't reached the point of being able to be computers quite yet. Here are some apps to keep it snappy though:
Fast Reboot (by Great Bytes Software)- same as a battery pull without having to. Clears up a lot of RAM.
Lte On/Off - with this, you can switch to 3G (CDMA) only, and have it set to automatically default to that setting in the case of you switching to airplane mode for some reason. But it does reset the app if you turn of your phone. Fast Reboot doesn't clash with this app.
App Cache Cleaner - clears out a lot of the cache you otherwise would have to go to Manage Applications to clean out.
That's all I can think of at the moment for non-rooted users. I won't go into rooted b/c this is not the right place. But here are a few battery saving settings:
GPS - have only the Google one on, it's the fastest in my experience.
Display - have it set to the lowest setting when at all possible. Only lowers color distortion in my experience.
Developer optionss - go in here and turn on the force GPU settings. This may not be the case with everyone, but it gives my phone a little more zip and makes things smoother.
Apps (this is the very bottom of the developer settings) - Adjust these to your liking. Perhaps try setting the max number of backgrounded processes to 4.
I wonder how it looks on you ...
on my droid 4 and with Jelly Bean i lost ~5,5% battery by hour no matter what i do even on airplane mode.. still aroud 5% by 1h
please can you advice how its look from your side ?
I had the same thing with my Droid 4. I finally sbf'd it, and reinstalled everything one at a time. This fixed it.

Is there any way for the Droid to use only 2G networks? 3G/4G while idle seems to be the biggest battery drainer.

The Droid 4 firmware just isn't very battery friendly... and it's not a new phone so your battery probably isn't either. Two things to consider.
LiIon batteries lose capacity over both cycles (cycling losses) and time (calendar losses.) If your battery is 18 months old and was charged nightly, you've lost 25% or more of the life anyhow... much more if the phone was kept plugged in after the charge and ran warm. And the drop accelerates with more cycles. It may be time to change the battery.
Adding JuiceDefender ( I use Ultimate) triples my battery life even in basic mode.
Replacing the battery is really simple; buy one from Amazon, open the back, carefully pry out the old one (it's held down by a double-sided tape), unscrew the connector (very small Torx, but jewelers screwdrivers work), swap and reassemble. $30 later (and a few hours to charge), you have your capacity back.

Turning off auto sync, turning off WiFi while on 4G works. Also make sure there's not any apps running in the background. Being root, there's apps you can download to close any open app

with CM it is an easy to safe much energy! and if you really want to do this on a right way, you really need to own a rooted system....
1. underclocked my cpu for 200mhz, dont have to comment.... if you use lightweight lounchers and care for background apps, it will noprob
2. use only 2g-networks, those are more available than every other networks, and even tcp/ip works with it, for whatsapp etc it is way enough bandwitch
very important!!!!
3. check your internal recievers after installing an app!! with "autorun manager" on a rooted device you can uncheck every function from every app, even autostart of an already killed facebook app, or statistical functions from apps which comes with most of them
4. get your brightness automated, if it is dark, you can automatically safe energy by a automatically regulation
5. maybe you would prefer to deactivate vibrations/haptic feedback/call vibration completely, its very energy consumpting.....
6. deactivate the gps-reciever complete, and just turn it on if you need it
7. set your display timeout as less than possible for your behaviour, 15 seconds may be enough
8. know what runs in background, evrything in background, sucks energy.....
9. deactivate nfc
10. deactivate bluetooth
with this i get a standby about ~1-3 days! and if im phoning and writing to much maybe not fully to one day. if i watch now on my energy tables, my display is consumpting still 40-60% battery per charge, but i dont think that even more safings would be possible
and with the app "tasker" you can even script this in endless environments

How does JuiceDefender save the battery? I have used many battery saver apps (including Juicedefender) and I always find that they run in the background and kill the apps which I would close anyway. Does it do anything besides kill background apps? By now I've deleted most background apps and have only kept the apps I want (which are few) and I still find battery life subpar.
Also definitely keeping 3G/4G off is a huge help. Wouldn't be able to make it very far without turning those off
I use Autorun Manager pro to freeze Google Play Services. Funnily enough, Play Store and Google Maps still work like a charm yet Google Play Services don't run background
Edited: With stock rom, install SetCPU and change the governor to hotplug. Underclock max frequency down to 800 MHz. You won't notice much different for normal tasks like watching videos, sms,...That setting is enough for me to play FF4 on MyBoy but playing heavy graphic games might not be snappy tho.
For me not using gaaps improve battery life. Every one knows for google play service that you cannot stop Instead I use calldav for my contacts.

5.0 Lollipop Battery Saving Guide and Sharing

If you're like me and you are sadly having less battery life than you were on KitKat try following this guide, and see if this helps improve your battery performance.
Required;
No-Frills CPU Control
ROM Toolbox
In the below screenshots are how I set up No-Frills and my Kernal Tweaks for the governor (interactive). Also, powersave mode. You don't have to use gray scale, but it helps tremendously. I would use applications like leandroid, but for some reason they won't work. At all. If anybody knows a fix please share and I will update the OP.
Have any other tips? Share the knowledge with us! Have anything you changed and helped more? Share the knowledge! Many thanks will be given to those with knowledge.

Hey this is the developer of LeanDroid. I'd be happy to help if you are having issues, just ask in the LeanDroid thread!
Near constant usage of screen time. About 3 quarters of the way through was when I arrived home. Decided to go all the way and overclock my device and see how long it takes to die.
I am stock 5.0 and not rooted... I have been getting 6 hours + of screen on time with heavy use. I keep my data off since I'm always on WiFi at home, even when away it stays off unless I specifically need it for something... Not sure about kitkat, but lollipop has the automatic data feature, where, say u have your data off, someone sends u an mms message, your phone will turn data on long enough to download attachment, then turn itself back off again... pretty cool imo...

Wish I didn't have to use my 4gLTE as much as I need to. Would love to get 6 on screen with heavy use.
i guess my usage would be the equalivent of hypermiling a car.. This is the first run since updating, although didnt beat my longest run of 3 days. ive used power saving 24/7 since i got my phone and it was connected to wifi virtually 100% of the time. On screen time 3h 42min.

How are you turning off data? I don't see it on the drop down menu.

Thanks, however I was wondering how he turned off data because he mentioned that he was stock and not rooted (as I am).

Settings>Data Usage>Mobile Data
My battery use has been good until the last couple of.days. Given houses of the phone not being touched, lost 10%. Now I am getting this huge spike drops any time I use my phone. I might have to reset, just hate to. I'm in a microcell so signal is great. I haven't used power saving, just turned it on a few minutes ago. I don't know my brightness percent, but it is low. Any ideas?
Also a couple of odd things for me.. Why is this app showing in my data when I either uninstalled it or disabled it. I can't remember now if it is one that can only be disabled.
Oh forgot the screen on screenshot.
Corporate email account can really drain the battery
Be aware that corporate email account (both exchange or IMAP) can heavily drain the battery due to security setting in the background, regardless Android 4.4.4 or 5.0.1. I had an IMAP based corporate account (which enforces some security measure by adding the company as an administrator). I have only 20% left by 5pm with minimal usage. In the Battery stats, both "Andorid System" and "Android OS" show 20%+ usage. After I deleted the corporate account (moved to Aqua Mail), Andorid System" and "Android OS" shows 10% usage by 5pm. I usually have 50%+ left around 6pm with minimal usage.

Mobile Radio Active being the main reason of discharge

Hello, I bought my Oneplus 3T recently and I'm using stick ROMwith ElementalX. The main problem I found is that everytime I look at what consumed the highest percentage of my battery are things like WA, Google Play Services, etc. If I click on the to see what is happening, I always get the Mobile Radio Active working like pretty much all the time.
For example, in a normal use for me which is between 26-30 hours until I decide to charge my phone(between 10-20%), I get a SoT of 4 hours and a half more or less. The problem is that from the total percentage of battery used, these applications which have the Mobile Radio Active problem drain between 10-15% of the total amount of battery, while my screen is like 7% of that total value.
Researching on XDA, I couldn't get any solution to this problem. I call this a problem because, every day I see new photos from people with between 7-9 h of SoT in maybe 20 hours of use. Of course, you can't really call this a bad performance of my phone but I think that this difference of hours with screen on is greater than the amount of time my phone stays with my screen off.
As a consequence, I wanted to know if there is a solution or some tips to reduce that Mobile Radio Active bug in order to extend the time between charges.
Thnk you very much.
Additional information: I cleaned flash stock today + ElementalX kernel + SuperSu to see if this kind of bug dissappears.
To "solve" the Mobile Radio Active bug you must take some extreme steps:
First, Root your device. This MUST be SuperSu unfortunately, as the app I'm going to suggest doesn't allow you to toggle the required settings with Magisk or Phh.
Install LeanDroid.
In settings, allow disabling of Wifi, Cellular Data, Bluetooth, Network Location and GPS Location.
Set to "0 min" after screen off. Click "Except".
Configure this screen to your taste, but I have "Except if tethering", "Except if charging (AC). Under Wifi I have "Except if connected to <my home WIFI>" and I have "Except if active: Limit" set to 100KB/s.
Bluetooth "Except if connected"
Location "Except if GPS in use"
and "Network Mode except if original strength OK."
Go back to the main panel.
Restore "After Screen Unlocked"
"Every 60 MIN after screen off" (Configure this to your liking)
With SuperSU and the above, turning the phone screen off disables the data modem when the transfer rate is low, this effectively shuts down the radio and prevents the Mobile Radio Active bug.
Run this with tools like Greenify and ForceDoze to really pump your battery life.
It's not unusual for me to see 8 hour screen on time with these apps and the above configuration.
and without root?
Just curious, how is the status of this bug ? I followed that Bug for like 1.5Years...since Lollipop i think. I myself tryed several things in Sultans ROMs in a OnePlusOne, but no Solution so far ;-(
Bug is still active. As far as I can tell, it remains active in Oero too.
The only option if you are not rooted is to close all apps and toggle airplane mode before you switch the screen off. This only solves the issue until the next time data is accessed by any app, though
THX for reply. Jepp on Wifi i get 4-5days @3-4h SOT. On Mobile only 2 days

Obviously, it takes more power to send/receive signals to a cell tower 10 miles away, versus a WiFi router that is 20 feet away.
Also using WiFi doesn't ensure the modem is Switched off. Modem power doesn't mean data.

This this bugs even remain active in Oreo i will never use android again.
It's existed since Lollipop and I doubt Google will fix it any time soon.
To get 7 hours of on screen time, you will of course have to sacrifice something, the laws of physics are always with us, reminding us from day to day things that can and can't be done. But hey, if you live in a cardboard box next to a cell tower should give you much better battery time without sacrificing the phone-part of your smart device. ? ?
