Waterproofing - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Ok so there is a few solutions out there, liquipel being one of the easier/better solutions. but with the new neverwet spray how many people are considering just paying 20 bucks and spraying all their devices (instead of 60 for just their sgs4)?

You first.

Not sure what brand it is but in the computer world we use some stuff to coat the motherboard and videocard and everything else when water cooling in case of a leak. Works very well and isn't anything new but would work for phones as well.

Looking at that samsung test video, isn't our devices already waterproof? Lol just kidding. ..

Corrosion x works wonders. Been using it on float plane and boat electronics for years. 10 oz can is 10 bucks. I spray the phone iPods everything. I haven't ever had a problem. Its kinda stinky for a day or two. Just make sure to spray and let it set overnight then dry outside off and you will be good to go.

A lot of that stuff is silicone based (hence the stinky for a day or two) and can cause big respiratory problems if inhaled. Not something I would want to have near my face on a regular basis.
And @eskomo, Muck Fichigan.

I've used this product for that same purpose:
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Techspray/2102-12S/?qs=MUyZ%2buhSCNXjsRg3GS2VTw==

Water proof it so you can water cool it. Overclock it to 3.0 GHz per core! :silly:

Wish we just could've gotten the S4 Active as well...

Dropped S4 in Toilet
I thought people might find this interesting.
I was out of town last night and my wife called me from our house phone and let me know she dropped her S4 in the toilet
She knew that she needed to get the battery out asap and pull sim and sd card and put in a bowl of rice until I got home and could disassemble to let the innards dry out.
So I just got home and disassembled the phone and to my amazement there was not a bit of moisture inside. Not even under the main board.
I reassembled and turned it on and it's still like new. Both speakers (earpiece and back) sound fine and I have listened on the other end of a call and mic seems to be fine as well.
I'm not recommending that you try this for fun but if it happens and you act quickly you should be ok.

All I can say is WOW!!!!
Over 2 mins until failure and no sign of water damage after drying out. I am very impressed. No wonder why water didn't even makes its way internally in just a few secs in the toilet.
Thanks for the link :good:

My DIY in 2 minute tablet stand for the lazies

Hi guys,
I wanted to buy a tablet stand for a while, but they're either bad or way too expensive, which means that if I want crap, I better do it myself.
The UPS carton from the Nexus 7 was hanging out next to my desk for weeks so I decided to just take it, cut a piece, and make it look like a stand. I did it pretty randomly and it turns out not bad at all. This definitely solves my stand issue. I'll probably improve it a little more by adding some duct tape so it can last a bit more that 2 weeks.
This will literally take 2 minute of your time if you wanna give it a try. I love it so far.
Pictures: http://imgur.com/a/jr464
Not bad if you don't have spare DVD cases laying around (that stand is a little more stable and longer-lasting), but edit your pictures and downsize them, they're too big for the forum!
-Ara
Woops, replaced it by an imgur album, thanks
I made one from a dvd case. Thing works awesome. It holds my N7 while in a case too. I often use it at night to charge.
I used a spare Xbox 360 case so mine is neon green.

Cool...I saw that stand at Walgreens and thought it was pretty cool. But they want over $10 for it, and I've already got a $30 stand ( bought for my old ex-Prime ) and another simple silicone stand. But the one you have does tempt me every time I see it
What about this?
I got this for my nexus 7:

For $4.89 (plus free shipping), it's a good deal. And from a top seller to boot.

Gawd I never thought i'd be shilling for gamestop but for $5 you really can't go wrong.
Sorry for the (gnex) crappy pic but you get the idea, the slots that the tablet fit into are super soft rubber (coated) and it folds completely flat.
Just go around your house and look for an unused picture frame prop.
I just thought I'd share mine.
I still need to trim off the glue, cut off the excess cardboard and paint it.
That's a cool idea. I make one for my kids.

Cracked Nexus 4

I don't post much but i had to post this. If you have a nexus 4 get a case ASAP. I have had many phones before this and i have never seen a phone crack so easily. I have Thrown my vibrant and nexus s ( not new of course) and they never shattered. This thing fell out of my pocket onto the floor while sitting at my desk. I measured the distance at approx. 2.5 feet. It looks like i flung it off a cliff. Gorilla glass my ass. I could understand if it cracked but this thing had chunks of glass coming off of it some of it splintered into my thumb.

I am not pissed just shocked at how much damage. I only posted to let others know not to hold out on a case and get one ASAP until they find something that suits them better. But ill let this thread die since it seems like the CRACK crack police (pun intended) is on the prowl on the forum.
Ouch, that's painful to look at.

Are there no waterproof rugged case for the note 2?

I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find a waterproof & rugged case for the note 2. the Otterbox defender seems to be the closest thing to what I want but it's not waterproof/water resistant. My main purpose for the case is to use the note 2 as a handheld GPS device when I go on hiking/backpacking.
Does anyone know if there is such a case exist or anything similar coming into market?
Start harassing Seidio to make a note 2 version of their OBEX case that they are releasing for iPhone5. This case seems to be close to the end-all for rugged cases.

Might email and ask Otterbox as well, they are making a waterproof case for s3, iphone4/5; new series called armor.

cdnmaplechick, yea I've seen it and it seems to be nothing more than just a plastic bag and offer no protection at all. While ideally I want the case to be waterproof, ruggedness is still more important than waterproof.

what about "liquipel?" they coat your phone with a special agent of theirs that protect it from water. google will tell more but its something ive come accrossed just reading tech articles.
If you have the note 2 already use a ziplock bag .... and a bluetooth headset. Isn't the whole point of fishing to be outdoors away from cell phone towers? I bet after fishing season a case should be out. Accessory makers should have cases out sooner since most phones almost always are announced a month or two ahead of time. Im still waiting on seidio extended battery convert case for this phone.
yes but when I am in the outdoors I want to take pictures shoot video txt my group I am with if nearby run gps tracking mapping navigation software. run ramp finder run charts when on the water play pandora or listen to an audio book etc.. etc. etc..
people seem to forget. I don't carry a phone. I carry a powerful portable hand held computer with me and oh by the way it happens to have a phone somewhere in there if i need it
I got this case for my S3
http://dx.com/p/protective-waterproof-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300-black-176052
I will be sure to post pics/review when I get it.
I hope they end up making one for my Note II as well.
as a "go between" till nice stuff comes out I also got this for my Note II
http://dx.com/p/bike-protective-wat...-samsung-galaxy-note-i9220-n7100-black-175949
it says water proof I would take that to mean splash resistant. IE don't go submerging it but if it rains on it or something your "probably" ok.
I hope my Note II fits inside without having to remove it from my cases.
Liquipel is very cool but at almost $100 including shipping & insurance, the price is too high for my occasional need just to add waterproof protection. I only paid $450 for my phone new without contract. Not to mention I need to send in the phone and wait for about week for the turnaround.
Maybe it'll tempt me more if it's available somewhere I can get it done locally in few hours...

Liquipel is available for Note I, so I just assumed with the note 2 it'll probably also work if I ask them, as I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't be able to coat a very similar phone in terms of physical design. But you're right, it's not officially on their list and it might not even be available for the note 2.
and they won't water proof guarentee ANY level of water protection anymore. leads me to believe they have issues with their process. you don't see them running phones underwater anymore.

I would give it a liquipel treatment and then slap on an Otterbox Defender case. Liquipel applies a nanocoating to your device making it water resistant, see here: http://www.liquipel.com/

They make cameras that can take pictures under water that are now cheap. With your portable computer (smartphone) becoming more powerful it needs vents in it to let the heat out. There's trade offs when you add a lot of features to a single device that a specialized device doesn't run into.

Broken S-pen; Please Help

Please help.. A couple weeks ago I was using my s-pen, just like normal, and suddenly the ass-end of it just SHEARED OFF.
I attempted to repair it by shoving a piece of a toothpick into the part of the ass-end that broke off, and the part that remained inside my phone. This did not work well as, in my attempts to do this, the toothpick snapped in two and now I just have the parts with toothpick pieces stuck in them.
I clipped off the excess toothpick and have been using my stubby stylus as such since, flicking it to insert it into the phone and smacking the bottom of it against my hand as if I were packing a pack of cigarettes in order to remove it.
Point being: I cannot continue to use and abuse my phone in such a manner, even if I do have an OtterBox on the damn thing. I need to repair/replace my stylus, this is obvious, but I don't feel like paying $30 for a brand-new stylus when the only thing wrong with it is the ass-end. Does anybody know of anywhere I can purchase [a] new ass-end(s) so that i can replace just that part of the stylus?

Well, like I said, I attempted to repair it with a toothpick first. when that didn't work, I shaved some of the plastic off of the exposed broken pieces with a knife to make it flush so that I might Gorilla-Glue it.
You're going round robins barn for no reason. If it broke legitimately (which I don't see how) then you can easily get it replaced under warranty. Why you would even attempt a repair is beyond me, unless you broke it yourself and are feeling guilty.

Sheared off, whilst in your hands, using it? Or left on the table/etc, came back and found it sheared off? Or sheared off, whilst you were inserting it back into the S-pen slot?
You weren't playing fruit ninja, were you?
Perhaps, your brother snapped his and simply swapped it with yours?
Because, I'm holding my S-pen right here, and the only way I can see it having broken as your photo depicts, is for it to have been snapped by hand.
Defective workmanship, would more likely result in it not being glued/affixed/assembled properly and it separating from each other, but not snapping/shearing.
If it truly was as you state it, then see if you can get a replacement under warranty. Otherwise purchase another one from ebay/etc or glue it back together and use it ghetto style.

Sounds and looks like S-Pen Ninja.
Again, that is just the two pieces. I have shaved off the extra plastic with a knife. That is not what it looked like when it broke. I pulled the s-pen out and when I held it like a pencil like you are supposed to, with the ass-end resting on the crook between my thumb and forefinger, it just sheared off.

sheared
past tense of shear (Verb)
Verb
Cut the wool off (a sheep or other animal).
Cut off (something such as hair, wool, or grass) with scissors or shears.
So you cut it off? I'm just giving you a hard time. I would def call into the carrier or Samsung. If you came to my store, I could probably get you one at no charge.
Anyone who would just cut up their s-pen is insane. But yeah, I've been attempting to get this resolved for a couple days now. Samsung won't put me on with an actual human, so I think I'm going to contact AT&T about it.
Ohhh big spender.. Try being deployed on the other side of the world and having to spend $869 to get one

Self made duct tape case

So I work as a lifeguard and I need my phone in the stand for music and ideally I'd like to have a waterproof case but there seem to be none available. i dont want the salt air to corrode the ports and internals of my phone so i usually use a sandwich bag but it doesnt provide any protection from sand really and its annoying. So I'm pretty crafty with duct tape so I decided to make my own case. I just did it about a half hour ago I'll probably make a better version in the future after I figure out the flaws but here's a few pictures of it. Let me know what you guys think.

well since you're a life guard why not buy those universal waterproof cases with neckstrap for less than $5?
Or you can get those disposable waterproof sleeves for note 2

Something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/iOttie-Sams...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item1c330f7348
or this http://www.ebay.com/itm/DRiPRO-Spor...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item4d0de9f4c3
Those are good ideas but it would be expensive for me because guard all summer 6 days a week and would need to change it everyday. Also the bag would be bulky and would take up room on the stand. I really want a case like the life proof but I know there are none

Well you could purchase those knock-off Otterbox Defender or Survivor cases. They should give you relatively ok protection from sand, drop impact, and minor splashes of water (for more water protection, those sealable cases I suggested earlier, would be your only choice).
This case http://www.ebay.com/itm/DRiPRO-Spor...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item4d0de9f4c3 is reusable, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I work beach volleyball and know what you mean, sand is the thing I fear most. I usually use two sandwich bags and scotch tape them tightly around the phone. Back camera's unusable then but the phone is safe the screen works just fine. I've also saran wrapped the phone itself and put it back in the case.

I was doing the same sandwich bag scotch tape method but the sand was scratching the phone thru it. I used this home made case for half a day now and its working awesome

Absolutely fugly, I would never desecrate my note like that. You could have done better with the knock off survivor case, an sp, and a sandwich bag.

That's certainly a lot more compact and efficient than trying to find a product that just doesn't exist (I have the same problems as the OP with a different model). There's no long term water/sand proof solution for any of the Notes. Desecration? I guess a scratched up, worn out phone is preferable. I've been working on the beach for six years, I know what I'm talking about.
I've been using freezer bags lately for working beach volleyball; they seem thicker.

I offered a solution in my post, one that would prevent scratches from sand, and wouldn't look like cellular Frankenstein.

I like it. Obviously we share the duct-tape sickness!
It works for you, great, sand and humidity everyday, rough stuff.
Otterbox or Survivor indeed will do nothing for you here in this regard.

Personally, I didn't find it fungly. I thought it was crafty and humorous. The worst thing, I was waiting or Jeff Foxworthy to finish the "you might be redneck" punch line, LOL. It was also something I could see my grandpa loving. Duck tape fixes everything.
But hey, if ziplock bag wasn't working for you, that couldn't have cost more than $1 in parts. Maybe fifteen to thirty minutes of time. Obviously this is not a case about drops, but about keep tiny scratch particles from getting in. A prime example of function over form.

Exactly. Who cares about what it looks like I only use it at work on the stand. Thanks for your input.
