Excuse me if the question is dumb. My last droid was the Evo. Trying to pick everything up again.
I know when you lock/unlock the bootloader, the phone will be wiped, but will it wipe when you flash a 3rd party rom?
Does it always get wiped? I know bootloader and RUU will clean it, but what about flashing roms?
Can the internal storage be treated as an SD card so my contents dont get wiped?
also, is this what i read about the virtual SD that started in honeycomb? is that located in /media?
It's /data/media or /data/media/0 on 4.2.2 and the recoveries understand it, so it doesn't have to be wiped.
Always take a backup though.

Hi, flashing ROMs doesn't wipe your internal storage, and neither your apps.
(on any base 4.1.2 / 4.2.2)

So I recently flashed Pac Man for my Vivid. I also flashed the gall-jb. I have a couple of questions.
1. Does it matter which version of gapps I use? Obv you want the most recent one, but will having an older one make you not be able to access your internal storage?
2. If it is the way I flashed my ROM would you suggest flashing it again or first flashing an ICS and then reflashing a JB ROM?
As always feedback is appreciated.

No - you need the 4.1.2 Gapps from October, any other version won't work properly.
More than likely it's your recovery. Are you now or have you previously used CWM recovery? If so, you need to get a new recovery (WCX or TWRP), boot to that recovery, connect to your computer, attempt to mount internal storage to your computer. Your computer should prompt you that your storage is corrupt and needs formatted. Format it. Then flash the ROM

This is the gapps I just downloaded, I was going to try it out.
gapps-jb-20121011-signed I think this is the one you are talking about...
So I have had cwm, but needless to say, I hate it since it sucks!! hahaha..I switched and now have WCX.
So I boot into recovery, while in recovery I connect to my PC. From there I essentially follow the prompts (it will prolly tell me my storage is corrupt and needs formatting.
Format my storage and then flash my rom?
When I format my storage will I lose my data on my SD card? This is where my ROM is. Should I remove the SD card?
Sounds like a simple fix if all goes well and Murphy's law doesn't take effect.

No. If you're having trouble with internal storage, that's what needs formatted. If the ROM is on your external SD, it won't be touched. If the ROM is on internal storage, you still have to format it. Once it's formatted, put the rom back on storage

Your help is appreciated.
External SD Card is FAT, not FAT 32, does that matter at all? I am still able to get to the files using root explorer.
BTW, the format did not work. ugh.
You did use the mount USB storage in wcx no?
If not it will never find your emmc
If that don't work try twrp... same process

Does your phone boot after the format?
See if android trys anything after the format via windows then boot

Initially it was saying there was not an external storage available to take pics and what not. In my not so genius thinking I didn't put two and two together and think that was not possible. I formatted the internal which is what was wrong. I can now access the external as well. Both mount perfectly

Yes. The camera on PAC and other AOSP roms saves to internal storage, but refers to it as external storage because it's not /system storage. Glad it's sorted.

If you mean storage/emulated/0/ that It's correct.
/storage/sdcard0/ internal sd storage path for compatibility with 4.1 apps.
/storage/emulated/0 4.2 internal sd storage path.

Both of these paths are symlinks, they don't "eat" your disk space, and you don't need get rid of it.
Under root (or in recovery file manager) check /data/media , all your files shall be in data/media/0, if any files are duplicated just in data/media,
that it not correctly... delete them.

It actually was eating my space, i had duplicate of everything, booting into recovery and doing a data wipe fixed this.
I've got the same problem after flashing cyanogen mod 10.1

Can someone help me out with this? What's the EASIEST way to fix this problem on my GF's phone?
I just want to copy over all her data onto a PC, Titanium Backup everything (apps, settings and all) and just fix this mounting issue. She definitely has duplicated around everywhere, but it's hard to understand what is a duplicated or not.
I have her running a CWM recovery.
Hi guys!
A few hours ago, I flashed a custom rom, but now most of my storage is "gone".
Before flashing, I had like 16GB (of 26GB) free, even with some movies/pictures on it.
But after flashing, I only have 7GB left and I didn't put any movies/big files on it.
I coudn't find the place that takes up most of my storage via normal apps.
How can I find this and delete the uncessary files?
Matt

Probable because all your files were copied to data/media/0
This is your new SD card so you can delete whatever you don't need

You probably wiped system (your ROM) and factory reset - this doesn't wipe 'data/media/', which is where your content is, such as music, movies, etc. It's basically because 4.2.2 has multiple user support. You have one storage directory (your sdcard) but there are different paths that are symlinked to that directory..

Well, if you want to keep them (your old files) just move them into the data/media/0 folder. If you have CWM backups, leave the 'clockworkmod' folder in data/media/.
The way to do it from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 was backup your content to PC, format your system and sdcard in recovery (this would wipe everything), then adb push or sideload your 4.2.2 rom and then transfer your content back to the phone from your PC.

In storage under other it seems that every time I flash a ROM, it's taking up more and more space. I deleted all backups and ROMs that I'm not using. How can I tell what's taking up all that space? It's like 8gb and climbing.

Easy way to tell is to take a few pictures. And rename them **something. Then go around seeing which is which. It's sloppy to have so many duplicates lying around. Tsk Tsk.

Yeah, the 0 was added for multiuser, there are plenty of links for backwards compatibility.
Most stuff in /data/media should be moved to /data/media/0, check the guides if you're not sure what (check /data/media/0) for inspiration.

they should not be shortcuts but actual files of full size, they are duplicates.
I find it so hard to believe people are still falling for this, many many examples of people asking about this and stuff their phones up.
It is the multi user of 4.2.2 that has changed SD Card location, in old data/media are the media files you had from an older rom, going to 4.2.2 or 4.3 has duplicated these files to a new location.
Delete the duplicates from data/media and you should recover this lost space. I had 16GB of other I tried to reclaim but i chose to format SD card to clean up instead.. DO NOT DO THIS, dont format or factory wipe SD Card, you will BRICK YOU MOBILE.
I feel sorry for anyone in this positon but am starting to laugh at how many are failling foul to this issue, all I can say is read the forums before doing anything to your One..
i have nothing in data/media
I really can't find what's taking all the space. i've explored all the folders

Ok so after some digging around here is what I have found...
I have a backup ROM on my phone just in case I have to do a quick wipe and install something.. did a search for it and it comes up 2 times:
/storage/emulated/legacy/roms/whatever.zip and /storage/sdcard0/roms/whatever.zip
Did a further test and created a folder in TWRP (called testfolder) on /sdcard/TWRP/Testfolder
now when I go to /storage/emulated/0/TWRP/Testfolder I see the Testfolder
when I go to /storage/emulated/legacy/TWRP/ it's not there
finally when I go to /storage/sdcard0/TWRP/ it's not there either...
Now, are these just sortcuts or is there duplicates here that I can delete?
I'm wondering because I have 4.6gb of photo and video if they had got copied somewhere also... Because I have seen the files in 2 different folders.
I also had this issue of very large storage under "other" after flashing a few different roms.
I flashed ViperOne over another rom with just the wipe option offered in aroma and had just over 12gb in "other" and then flashed again with a complete wipe in recovery first and now have 7gb in "other"
Found that the easiest way to solve this (as long as you don't mind losing data) is to do a complete clean install , wipe everything in recovery including internal storage.
So now when I flash a new rom I just boot to twrp recovery, click "wipe" - "advanced wipe" then select "dalvik cache", "cache", "data", "internal storage" & "system" (I don't select usb-otg as I don't have a usb-otg cable). I then reboot recovery, connect to pc and adb sideload a rom.

I've tried your recommendation & it still fails.
My htc One is international & comes with 32gb storage.
I'm using latest TWRP & have done the following:
- Format data (type YES). Done. Reboot Recovery.
Then
- Advance wipe: "dalvik cache", "cache", "data", "internal storage" & "system".
- Adb sideload the ROM.
I've done that TWICE but "Other" still has 7gb.
I plugged the phone into the comp via usb to verify the storage, it shows I have only 24gb available.
That means no matter what I wipe & format, I still have 7gb of junks in the storage & can't get rid of it.
Please advice.

Hi guys, just a quick question. There's a lot of junk on my phone from old app installs and I want to clean them up. I was thinking of simply formatting /data/media or using the factory reset on Philz recovery(not clean to install a new ROM) but I saw my modemst1.img and miodemst2.img files in that directory. So I was wondering if anyone could explain why they are there and would it be safe to format my /data/media partition? I've tried searching around and haven't seen any info I've considered reliable enough to just five in and risk screwing things up. So if anyone could possibly she'd some light on this that would be appreciated.
