[Q] CWM, custom roms and warranty - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i've just bought a stock SGS+, with stock rom and recovery. I'd like to install 4.2.2, and my problem is that the phone is still on warranty. Will my warranty be void if I install CWM (I know it will if i install custom roms, but that can be easily reverted to stock), and if it will, can i return to the stock recovery in any way later? Thanks for help and sorry for my bad english

Type *#1234# and write down what you seen in screen. Inorder to claim the warranty you must need that to return to the exact stock Rom which your phone was shipped with. Also take precautions before you start flashing. Take backup of efs and persist. Once you lost these files you can't get them back.
Always be prepared to face an unexpected brick/bootloop/freeze/random reboots etc. Get ready with all the informations to overcome these situations. Happy flashing..
Edit : Flashing stock Rom will overwrite all the previous custom installations. And revert to the stock. Don't worry. There will be stock recovery.

Hey man, thanks for the reply! So, if just download the right rom (Build Info : Tue Feb 21 11:10:17 KST 2012 i suppose), and install it through CWM, will it delete CWM and revert to stock recovery?

No. You have to flash stock Rom via Odin. The details of which you can be found herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922505.

Hey, one more question - when I install CWM can I install 4.2.2 straight away from 2.3.6? Or do I have to do something more?
And which one is better, CWM or TWRP?

Yea you can install. But don't forget to wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvic cache before installing the zip.
I am using CWM 6.0.3.2 and not facing an issue with it. Haven't used TWRP yet... so can't comment about it. Those who are using says its good.

Really thanks for all the help man! Btw, I see that you're using liquidsmooth, same one that i'm planing to get. How's it running?

Well, that's great to hear
I'll try flashing it in a week or so, I'll write here if I have any questions and then let you know what my results are ^^

Hey, once again I have a question. I want to be fully prepared, so i found a tutorial as illustrated as possible, and I would like to ask if it's a good one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776095
Also, is the stockification process the same, but with stock ROM package, or is something different?

It;s a brilliant tutorial. Explained there is a method installing CWM, Rooting and Deodexing of untouched stock ROM users.
You can use the same method as explained in CWM installation using Odin to revert back to stock. Only one difference, instead of that recovery image you have to select the stock ROM image.
Give a Big thanks to Broodplank1337 for such a wonderful tutorial.:good:

Thanks for all the support man ^^
In the tutorial i see CWM v5.5.0.4, and you have 6.0.1.3, and on one thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843825) I've seen that there is 6.0.2.6 already, but they're .zip, not .tar. I should flash 5.5.0.4 with Odin first and then install new CWM .zip through CWM, am I right? And when i'm revering to stock, do i have to download the right firmare, or can i just backup my own? Or if I backup it with CWM will it lose the stock recovery?
And also, I can't find any /efs /persist backup tutorial :C Sorry for all your time taken, but perhaps you have any link? Thanks again

Recovery
Well when i need waranty i just need to restore the rom but what about recovery ? can i leave it on CWM 6

Yes you can install CWM 5.5.0.4. If you are looking for a newer version, you can use Alireza7991's CWM 6.0.3.2(thanks to him). you can find both .tar and .zip files there.
When reverting to stock, you have to download any stock. If it's for warranty purposes, you need to download the one for your region.
In order to flash the stock rom, you have to use odin, not CWM.
Here is how you can backup your /efs and /persist
Good luck.

As i said before, when you flash the stock, all your previous customizations will also lost. After that there will be only stock recovery.

Thanks again for all the answers, still got one question - when is the possibility of losing efs or persist? During rom flash or CWM flash? Can i flash the CWM without the risk of losing esf?

Risks will be there all the time. No one can assure you that any step or method is 100% fool proof. That's why all the developers in here underlying that "Try it your own"., they take no responsibility of any damages.
I can only assure you one thing. If you are in any trouble, the awesome Devs in here will do their best to sort it out.

I mean, when comes the risk of losing these partitions (even after successfull flashing), after flashing CWM or after flashing rom? I'm asking that because i have to root the phone to backup them, and the easiest way to root is to install the .zip through CWM

Why did I lose root? Please help!

First off I would like to thank everyone on this amazing site for all the advice, guides and tutorials.
I unlocked my nexus bootloader and flashed a couple different roms. I really like the rom manager so I've used that to download roms and then flash them using that app.
When I downloaded the stock version of 91and flashed it, the phone no longer seemed to have root or clockwork recovery but my bootloader was still unlocked. When I downloaded rom manager, it could not get super user permissions, this being useless in flashing a backup or new rom. So I used universal one click root to gain root access and then rom manager was able to flash a backup.
I know this may be a dumb question but hope someone could explain to me why I needed to re-root and why I lost clockwork recovery...?
Thanks for the help in advance.

Right theres your problem. stock roms dont have root built in you have to root them again. unless you download a prerooted stock rom. hope this helps.

Yep this seems to be your problem. If you're wanting stock with the basic add-ons then the first link in this thread is your answer: Link.
Thanks very much. That does make sense. I thought unlocked bootloader meant I was rooted regardless of rom! I'm in way over my head lol. Looking forward to learning more...thanks for the new rom link as well

The advantage of unlocking your bootloader means you can flash a custom recovery from Fastboot mode, without having to "root" the ROM. Next time this happens you can just boot into fastboot and flash clockwork from there like this:
fastboot flash recovery PATHTO\RECOVERYFILENAME.img
so say you download clockwork and save it to c:\sdk\fastboot named recovery.img from a command prompt you enter the following
cd \sdk\fastboot
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
once it is done flashing you can do this
fastboot reboot recovery
and that should take you into clockwork where you can flash your favorite ROM (or restore a backup).
Thanks for the help. I will be sure to try that method out next time. Very helpful.

[Q] ICS (or any other rom) won't install on my Samsung Captivate!

Hello. Well i have a big problem with my Captivate. All custom roms that i have tried (Cyanogen, MIUI, Cognition, Serendipity, and the ICS rom by teamhacksung) won't bother to install. I always flash back to stock 2.1 via Odin-1-Click, root it via Samsung Galaxy S 1 Click Root, and install the Hardcore Speedmod Kernel for Clockwork mod. I follow all the directions completely and with Cyanogen i always get a boot loop, and with all the others clockwork mod freezes while it is installing the rom. I thought it was taking it's time so i left it overnight to complete. About 8 hours later it was still at the same screen where it said "Installing Update." Can anyone help?

What do you recommend to install the roms? Odin restores the captivate back to stock perfectly without any problems.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Here's what I would do:
Odin1Click to stock
Master Clear
When the phone reboots, copy this and the ROM you want to flash to your SD card
Reboot into recovery, and select "install from zip"
Select the update.zip you just downloaded
It will cycle thru once, do it one more time, you'll then boot into CWM
Select to install from zip again, this time select your ROM
and you should be good to go

Flashing the kernel was getting you in bootloops.
---------- Post added at 07:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:38 PM ----------
Which ROM do you want to run? CM7/Miui/ICS are VERY simple, GB is a LITTLE bit more complicated, you have to flash the boot loaders first(and has a bit more risk of bricking too). With GB, just make sure you read very well, and fully understand what you need to do BEFORE you do it
I want to install the ics rom and thank you I will try to do this tomorrow and see if my problem is resolved

Make sure to do a Master Clear first. Save everything you want to keep on a ext SD, and back everything up. Master Clear will return the phone just like you got it from AT&T. It erases EVERYTHING
Also, I remove my SIM and ext SD before I M/C just to be safe

Don't hit it with a brick?
When you are using Odin1Click make sure you don't disconnect your USB, or knock the battery out, make sure your battery is more than 50%(100 is best).
If you look under your battery, is there a tag with numbers like, 10.06, 10.07, 10.08 and so on there? If there is, what is yours?

I have a quick question regarding upgrading to ICS from GB. I'm running KK4. If I were to CWM to ICSSGS or TeamHacksungs ROM, could I just do an Odin oneclick back to KK4 if I don't like them (without problem of bricking)? I know the basics of flashing , just wanna make sure coming back to my stable ROM will be as easy as a 1click. Thanks!

You definitly made a mistake somewhere. Try the v20s bin/fls files from my noob how to, since they also work for me. Did you wipe everything when you were in recovery + flash superuser.zip? Unroot ROM is ready, but you need CWM to flash it and will lose all kind of root access.

That's cause you didn't follow all the steps.. When you flash higher versions, it has to repartition. Therefor a couple flashes are needed. If coming from gb and going up to 10.2 or 10.3, you'll have to flash cm7 first and then make your way to cm10.2, once again by flashing twice to rewrite the partition.
All that is clearly mentioned in the instructions. Just gotta take the time to read and understand it.

I'd probably start fresh at this point. Flash Odin kk4 without bootloaders and see if boots up correctly. Also try your sd card. From there you can flash korn kernel using odin 1.87 and go back up to whichever ROM you want using their full instructions.

Getting impatient is the worse thing you can do.. Now you'll have to flash the gb bootloaders cause you just flashed 2.2.
Now flash this: http://click.xda-developers.com/api...e</b></font>&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13811531834186
And please, be patient. Don't interrupt it for any reason!!
From there, follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
I'm sorry but I can't hold your hand through all this, I'm in class.

In that case, flash the first link I gave you. Which is the non-bootloaders version.
Usually, the older one clicks flashes the bootloaders.

So this is my problem. I have the AT&T Note 3 which as far as i know has a locked bootloader or somthing like that. I cant find anywhere to install CWM or TWRP i cant find any downloads for that recovery tool for my phone, from what i see they dont exist so can sombody please help me get this script installed to my phone. Is there some other app that will flash the script to my phone or do whatever needs to be done so i can get it to work. My phone is rooted and i have tried to get CWM and TWRP and it doesnt work. Is there an alternative or somthing i can use. Any help would be great thanks in advance. I have the MJ5 build and on 4.3

Yes we have a locked bootloader. We have to use safestrap instead of the usual recovery like cwm or twrp.

Hi there, I have a question also,
Do I need to flash a custom rom using safestrap and then flash the script, or can I just use safestrap to flash the script on my ATT stock rom?
Thank you in advance.
