I live in the USA, using AT&T, and is shopping around for Galaxy S phone. The Captivate is the obvious choice under the Galaxy S flag. I just noticed the Galaxy S Vibrant from Canada today and I am really interested in it, especially because of the front facing camera.
How would I go about purchasing it? How would I get it working under the AT&T carrier? How is Edge, 3G, and voice, etc? How would future rom updates be installed? What are the down sides to buying the Vibrant versus a local Captivate?
Thanks
I have a Bell GS and on Bell it works great. Though after a firmware upgrade yesterday is is acting a bit wonky, might have to do reset.
To use it on ATT in the US you would have to buy it outright from Bell or other brick and mortar store that carry Bell phones. ie. Best Buy/FutureShop.
There is an unlock app for GS's and supposedly works on the Bell I9000, haven't tried it myself, no need atm. This will allow you to use a ATT sim card in the phone.
To update, you can use Samsung kies, supposedly what they will be using to push updates to GS, you can get that from samsungs web site. From what I have found so far you need to be in the touch wiz launcher to use kies. only matters if you use 3rd party launchers.
Not sure how the FFC will work for you. That might be dependant on ATT?
Your best bet, if you decide to get one. ROOT and make it your *****!
It would be 100% compatible on AT&T's network. In fact, it's even more compatible because Bell doesn't have a 2G network you can switch to to save battery life.
ROM updates come officially through Kies like normal, although you should also be able to flash most international i9000 ROMs you see floating around here, just make sure before doing so. Flashing a Captivate ROM just because you're on AT&T is a surefire way to brick your phone.
To buy it you will likely need to use something like eBay because even if you purchase it outright almost every store won't let you leave unless you have existing service with Bell. You can unlock it for free though with the method that I am sure is detailed on the Android Development board somewhere.
The obvious downside to buying Bell's Galaxy S is it comes at full retail price (over $500 Canadian) and in all likelihood you're probably going to get a model with the three button download/recovery modes disabled, making flashing ROMs risky. Hold out until the end of this month to see if Samsung Canada announces more about their promised fix for this.
I am using one on AT&T as well and it works fine. Best part is that AT&T doesn't force you on their limited smartphone plans and you can put it on a cheaper unlimited plan.
I got mine in a trade for a BB Torch but you can find one on eBay or maybe talk to a Canadian member here to see about picking one up for you. I would suggest you have them check for the 3 button recovery to make sure it's working before they buy it though.
The downside is warranty issues if it breaks but as long as the 3 button recovery works you should be able to recover from a bad flash and the hardware seems pretty solid so far so no worries there.
Based on the responses, I am definitely going with the Bell/Canadian Vibrant. The only trouble I have now is just finding one to purchase.
How do I post my intentions here to let people that I want one? Who is a reliable dealer here?
Many Thanks
GH
the bell ones got both 850 and 1900 bands?
Also does it have a bell logo on it or is it unbranded.
send me a PM if you want to buy a Bell SGS with 3 button working tested, and GPS tested before mailing it to your address of choice.

Epic 4G (used as 3G on Bell / Rogers)
Hello,
I am interested exactly the opposite: I want to buy an Epic from Sprint (with no contract) and to use it in Canada (on Bell or Rogers) but only with a data plan, no voice (as I will use the SIP / VOIP). If Bell or Rogers offers only data plan, should this phone (Epic) works out of the box (or with the unlocking code) on the 3G network of Bell / Rogers, simply inserting their SIM card into the phone?

the sprint version is CDMA, chances are it's CDMA locked to sprint
CDMA unlocking is done on the server side, is not on the phone like GSM
you need to register your CDMA IMEI number to the say... Bell or Telus, if they see it on their server it's allowed they will let you in, if they see it listed as not allowed then they wont register the phone into their (Telus/Bell) CDMA network

Thanks for your answer.
I am not a tech, but the 4G/3G is also depending on CDMA? Or CDMA concerns only voice? Is it 4G/3G a standard (the same on Sprint and Bell and Rogers) that doesn't depend neither on CDMA or GSM?
we don't have 4G support yet in Canada
CDMA is for voice, but if you can not register the phone in the network for voice, you will also not get access to data
to have data you must have a voice connection
not a phone requirement but a phone network carrier requirement
Thanks.
Anyway, I checked right now with Bell and Rogers and no one offers only data plan... But what they will do with iPad and Galaxy Tab that doesn't support voice, but only data? If I will take the SIM out the gTab and put in a phone (Epic or Vibrant or Captivate), will the phone be able to work on 3G?

Yes, but if Bell already sells the dataonly plan for iPad, why they don't sell a dataonly plan also for a smartphone?
because they can claim a Tab is "not a phone" (whatever...)
and a Galaxy is a "phone"

I currently have a I9000 and am on ATT's network in southern california. I'm all but satisfied since my coverage is poor indoors and in some areas because of the lack of 850 band support.
I'm looking to move instead to the I9000M from Bell to get the added 850 3g coverage. Were you able to get a phone, root, unlock it and upgrade to froyo 2.2? Can you tell me about your experience so far including testing for 3-button boot into recovery? Where and how much you got the phone for out-the-door? Thanks.
Sorry mate, still waiting on mine, can't believe its been a month. An xda member here indicated that the stores in Canada are out of stock for awhile now.
Hi all,
I sold my Nexus One on ebay as being "unlocked" and working with both AT&T and T-Mobile. it worked fine for 3G on my T-Mobile account, but the buyer said when he put his AT&T sim card in it though it only worked on the edge network. He pulled off the battery and checked the FCC id number and it is nm8PB99100, which matches the ID number on the box. This means it's the T-Mobile 3G version and not the AT&T version, the AT&T version would be 99110.
He said the 3G AT&T version is the 850/1900 model, which mine was not.
What exactly can I do in this situation? Thanks for any help.
easy, just tell him to switch carriers

t-mobile and at&t use different frequencies for their 3g network.
That's why Google has a T-Mobile version of the N1, and an at&t version. The t-mobile that works with t-mobile 3g, does NOT work with at&t 3g. And vice versa. The guy is screwed and can use at&t edge network, but not 3g.
He is not screwed, I've been using the t-mobile version on att for about a year and it's not to bag. I use wifi at home and at work.

I think the he's screwed referred to his desire to get 3G reception on AT&T with a T-Mo Nexus One.
You can ask for your phone back, refund the buyer and know your facts next time.

The phone IS unlocked. Meaning it works with Tmobile or ATT. So you did get it right there. Just like the others are saying. Tmobile N1 wont work on ATT 3G and visa versa. If you never stated that it will work on ATT 3G in the beginning i dont see it as your fault. The user should of asked questions prior to buying the phone. Unlocked doesnt mean it will work on both networks 3G's service. Unlock just means the phone will work on any network with a SIM.
Unlocked means that it is not locked to a specific carrier, not that it will work on any network. Depending on your area a tmo phone may or may not be able to ride 3G. In my area it would be edge only. If you said the phone was AT&T compatible for 3G your description was incorrect, a compatible phone would support both 850 and 1900. If you said it "might" work on AT&T, area depending, then you were honest as far as a court date would go. Were it me I would offer to refund so long as the buyer payed shipping regardless of how I worded it. Usually you have to suffer to do the right thing, in this case you can do it for nothing.
thanks for all your help guys, he sent it back and i gave him a full refund and posted it back on ebay with the correct information.

Nope. I think they tired to do that before on the G1, but finally gave up and said it was impossible.
Noo because it is a hardware issue.
For context let me say that I live in the US, currently on Verizon, but not on contract. I have been waiting since February for a device worthy of upgrading from my Droid Incredible. This is the phone for me.
Given that the US carriers seem incapable of getting new high-end hardware (7 months for SGSII to launch here is the US!!!), and that there has been no announcement of this phone on any US carrier, I am planning for the worst.
I am unfamiliar with GSM networks, having been on Verizon's CDMA for 10+years. My understanding is that I simply need a SIM card from a GSM carrier, say AT&T, and an "unlocked" GSNote from the UK. Is there any risk this won't work? I would hate to spend a ton of money for a phone I can't use.
Any news on a US release.
The galaxy note selling right now is unlock and the 3G band will work on AT&T USA 850/1900 bands and get edge on tmobile.

Yes, 3G > EDGE. EDGE is the GSM equivalent to 1x.
The biggest benefit of GSM network is the ability to swap phones around by just swapping the sim card as long the phone is network unlocked.
GNote from europe is network unlocked.
All you have to do is visit and att store, get a sim and a plan.
Once u get a sim and a number, u can put it in any gsm phone and use it .

Im using AT&T and I order the device from mobilecotyonline.com but no ETA but negrielectronics have instock also in the US the two retailers sell the unlock device with AT&T 3G bands and regular SIM Card.
Buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note. Put it on Straight Talk Mobile prepaid for $45/month which uses AT&T's network. You would have to buy a refurbed Nokia E71 phone for $99 to do it and put the sim card in the Note with some settings changes. You get unlimited talk/text/data with no contract using AT&T's 3G network.
I too must have this device. My contract with verizon ends in a couple of weeks and i was planning to renew and get the galaxy nexus but after seeing the galaxy note, well....anyway i'd like to wait for the korean release of the note since it's supposed to have lte. will that model work on verizon or do i need to switch to at&t no matter what? if the lte note will work on verizon, i was thinking getting the nexus with contract renewal and then selling it to get the note.

Verizon uses CDMA which is not compatible if the Korean version is GSM. Only way is if it was released as a world phone with both CDMA and GSM built in.
What about speeds?
It sounds like getting a European version will limit the data speeds here in the US due to compatibility of data technology faster than 3G. I don't know if T-Mobile or AT&T have anything faster than 3G, but the CDMA carriers (Sprint and Verizon) have 4G (WiMax/LTE) data.
So I could wait for any US carrier to offer it, but it seems only Sprint or Verizon would provide high speed data. If only T-Mobile or AT&T carry it I would do better to get one from UK to get it earlier.
Of course all these issues would go away if US carriers would get decent f'ing hardware!!!
Why is it that all the good stuff launches in Europe first anyway?

I almost sure for thi syear non US carrier launch the Note,You can wait to see but if you like a carrier have this device remember just AT&T 3G?HSPA+ version pass the FCC till the moment and I think is because they know users in the US sure buy this device and they test to skip future problems not because a carrier in the US have this.
I am a bit confused. Would it have faster than 3G data if it was released on T-Mobile or AT&T as opposed to importing one from Europe?

The speed of your device is influence by your carrier the device is ready to run like from 28 to 40 M,sorry don‘t be more specific but you can check the database of the device.
OP, if you leave Verizon for AT&T you'll get HSPA+ speeds (aka: fake 4G). You can typically expect 3MBish down in areas where AT&T hasn't upgraded their backhaul and 6-8MB down where they have. Anybody that uses a non-AWS device on T-Mobile is nuts.
Because the device isn't recognized on AT&T's network you can save a bunch of money on voice and data. You can get a $39.99 450 minute voice plan (900 = $59.99) with 5,000 nights and weekends minutes (900 = unlimited). Add unlimited messaging with mobile to any mobile calling (any mobile on any carrier) for $20 and you can add unlimited data for $10 on the data for non-Smartphones plan. So you're close to a truly unlimited plan for $69.99 a month. Also, if you bring your own equipment (tell them you're using a Moto Krzr) you can go contract-less and leave any time you want. I did this in May coming from T-Mobile when I got my ISGS2. I don't know if you travel internationally but, if you do, having AT&T and an unlocked phone is a joy. They have great international data roaming plans and you can also buy a pay-as-you-go plan in any country you visit and just pop the SIM in to the Note. If you want to go the route I described you have to do it over the phone, it can't be done online.

No, HSPA+ is the fastest speed you can get on AT&T short of LTE. The ASGS2 and ISGS2 get the same speeds on AT&T's network with a theoretical max of 21MB down. If AT&T introduces an LTE version of the Note then yes, that would be faster. T-Mobile's a non-starter because: A) they use funky bands that aren't typically supported by international devices, and B) they'll probably be gone soon anyway.

Two things. The Korean versions of Samsung products are optimized for the two Korean carriers. They are tri-band, not quad-band like the rest of the world and don't support AT&T's bands. Also, LTE is a moving target. There are over a dozen different spectrums in use worldwide so there's no assurance a device designated LTE will work with a specific carrier. VZW and AT&T both use the 700 series bands yet their devices are incompatible.

They can detect a phone's model based on its IMEI. They don't have the IMEI's for international phones in their database. The exception being Google phones (including the new Galaxy Nexus) because Google makes that data available to them. So they can't identify an ISGS2 as a smartphone. The ASGS2 is both a different model number and they have the IMEIs for all of those models produced.
Might suggest sticking with Verizon buy the phone out right and get the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot then use that as your data and if you need to talk VOIP / SIP never worry about min. Benefit you can use the MIFI on your laptop and any other Wifi enabled devices. Other benefit is the price a heck of a lot cheaper than those Cell contracts. Just an idea..
Hello,
I have just purchased an unlocked international version of the Galaxy s3 from newegg.ca
I'm not allowed to post the link to the product as I am a new member.
Before I bought it I noticed that it will work on Rogers (in Canada, where I am from) so I went ahead and ordered it. I went back to the site a few days later and noticed that in the details it says that this phone will only work on the AT&T 3g network. In Canada we don't use AT&T so basically I am stuck with a smart phone that I can't connect to a data network with. A useless phone. I can send it back and get a refund so it's really not a big problem. I am wondering however, if there is a way that I can get the phone to work on a rogers network? Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to send it back? Thanks.

So i am unsure about your carrier networks over there, but usually when a phone is locked to a carrier here in Australia, you really just need to pay an unlocking fee to use the other networks. Sure there might be some difference between their networks, but overall you should be able to get a working phone, maybe just not on the fastest mobile infrastructure.

Hey thanks. It is already unlocked. But for some reason, which I don't understand, the 3g will only work with AT&T networks. I'm sure there is a way to fix it if it's rooted or something like that but I just don't know how.
strange, according to wikipedia both AT&T and Rogers use 850/1900MHz for their 3G, so if you buy a phone for the AT&T network, the 3G should work fine on Rogers..

yeah I wish I could post the link to the product. I even called the company and they said it would be AT&T only. I guess this is why noobs should just stick to carriers and contracts.. I can't sign a contract because I may be headed overseas (hence the international version of the phone) but I am just not knowledgeable enough to navigate this situation without risk, I suppose
SO I picked up a 256GB emperor edition from Korea. It is Confirmed to have every single LTE band that AT&T uses. I put my sim in and only get 3G not 4G. Called at&t and they said they need to re-appropriate the IMEI for the USA as it comes up as a 2g/3g phone because the SKoren SK telecom IMEI assigned to the phone is different in the USA. IS that True? Anyone know how and if I can get the Phone to work on 4G LTE on at&t or do I have to hope they get it right? I paid $1400 for this phone I don't want to use a 64GB version I have been waiting to have 500+ GB on a phone for so long.. Any TIps? Hints? Recommendations?
EDIT: for those reading this thread for the first time. As of 10/9/17 I was able to get good LTE speeds as well as WIFI calling and Video Calling on my N950N note 8 Korean Exynos model. In a nutshell here is what I did to make it work.
Flash nemesis n950F rom to my phone.
Flash AT&T CSC to the phone using the CSC tool and you do have to modify one line (user RED FLAME) has this in the CSC thread.
Call at&t and give them the IMEI of a VOLTE wifi calling/video calling capable cellphone (I used my wifes S8+ - and yes you can DOUBLE USE IMEI on the same account)
I also did one other thing - Check page 14 for that information.
I just wanted to give a synopsis of this thread so new N950N and at&t owners don't feel like they are wasting their time searching XDA and google. I only wish other people did this when their problem is solved so people can easily see they are not in the wrong place and don't have to read tons of pages of stuff.

Hi.
There is a thread somewhere here they were talking about similar problems.
What you where told is essentially correct. Though they also said that they needed a new sim card, too.
Hope this helps. Still waiting for my Note 8.
Too bad those devices do not have the CDMA bands...
I have the same model and same problem but with softbank, though softbank has been less helpful.. i read someone flashing a different csc (if its the right one) will "unblock" the phone? Would any exymos model csc work?
My roaming menu is also greyed out... not sure if that is related.
I think you just need to give them the IMEI and have them set it up for LTE in their system, since they don't by default allow LTE on bring your own devices.
Did you change the apn? I have the same phone on tmobile and i changed the apn to the tmobile apn and i have no problems with the phone.

Just a quick comment - I think you mis-spoke. ATT Does allow LTE on Bring your own devices. I have been using G955F variants for the last 4 years and never had to do anything other than put the SIM card in for it to work. HOwever, LTE Enhanced Services are not available on Bring your own Devices. This includes HD Calling, Wifi Calling and Video Calling. BUT, LTE will work.
I don't know anything about the Korean Model so I hope the OP is able to get things straightened out - but other variants have always worked on ATT - including TMOBILE PHONES and international variants as well.

That's probably what I meant. I haven't been an AT&T customer for many years, and have been with T-mobile for all my smart phone career, and they don't require any special setup on their end for VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, etc as I can confirm with my Korean Note 8. After somewhat jankily switching CSCs with a modified script that was originally made for S8 and 8+ phones I definitely have VoLTE and probably have Wi-Fi calling working without any communication to T-mobile.
Waiting on at&t now.. to see what happens.. SPEC for SPEC this phone is exactly the same as an at&t phone. It has every single band, not missing a single one. If you put the specs side by side there is ZERO difference. I changed the APN - there are 3 at&t choices. One gives me 3G the other 2 do not work. SO waiting on at&t to re-appropriate the IMEI to register as a note 8 on their network. I had not idea it was going to be this much of a pain in the arse. I was told by a few sellers, pop in your sim and your good to go. I did need a new sim since my note 4 sim did not fit in the note 8, so They gave me a new sim. I put the sim (using an adapter) back into my Note 4 until they change over the IMEI and the new sim works just fine on the note 4 - all my video calling, wifi calling and tethering work fine. So hoping I do not need to return this phone and use a 64GB model. I wish samsung would just release the 256 here on at&t like apple is doing with the iphone X. I would pay $1200 for it no problem. (and since the iphone X is $1149 with 256gb - I am sure samsung would do $999 or $1099 to undercut apple. But Samsung is going to epic fail and never give the US customers what they want.
Hi there, I would also like to have the Emperor's edition, and use it in Canada (Bell) and USA (T-Mobile or AT&T). Is N950N the correct model number for this edition? Does it come with dual sim? Thanks! So far I found an Ebay seller from Hong Kong with F950FD which looks to be 256GB Duos - I'm wondering what the difference is with N950N and whether I will have an issue with region lock?
Thanks for any comments...
I have the unlocked version on at&t and this is my son, just in case...

No, I was using it on a HTC10 and previously on a Note 4...
Totally DIsappointed... No way I am keeping this $1300 phone for how crappy it is on At&T.
They Finally Updated the IMEI so that is shows up as a next gen smartphone on at&t network and I get an LTE logo. I set my own ACCESS POINT as well as used all 3 that showed up automatically. ATT Phone, ATT NEXTGENPHONE and ATT UTDATA (Nextgen) + I did what was recommended on att.com for bringing over a phone that might not get the access point which was the same settings as ATT Phone - all of them gave me LTE on my bar and showed AT&T as the network. Every single LTE Band on this phone is the same as the official ATT note 8. Yet on my speed test I couldn't get better than 4MB/s down and 1.56MB/s up, my note 4 (pop the sim card back in there) even with 1 Bar on my phone I get 42MB/s download and like 10MB/s Upload.
IT is too late to call at&t tonight but I am extremely disappointed. I have wanted a phone with 256GB of memory for like 2 years now, and to have MicroSD expansion for just MUSIC (NOTHING ELSE).
If At&t can't get this note 8 to perform exactly like a at&t version would, then I either going back to my Note 4 or Perhaps the US Samsung unlocked version (which I already have but is not opened as I hoped to sell it and make a few hundred on it to make up for the $1300 I spent on this Emperor Edition.
Any advice?
Anyone want to buy it.. I paid $1299.99 Shipped from NK. Instead of returning it - if anyone wants to buy it, id do the same thing $1299.99 shipped anywhere in US or Canada. Perhaps it will work better on another network...

Have you Odin the CSC and IMS? From what I have read that needs to be done?
Sent from my SM-N950U1 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
No, I haven't flashed the CSC profile, no wifi calling or VOLTE but internet speed is fast...

tl;dr - Under Settings->Connections->More Settings there's an option titled Reset Network Settings and, i had to use that on my Korean, Note Fan Edition to get LTE working.
more detail on how i got VoLTE and HD Voice working.... i grabbed an ATT (Snapdragon) S8+ CSC and manually applied to the FE. To get HDVoice and VoLTE working, i called ATT and told them i was going to use my (no-longer used/retired) ATT Samsung S7Active with my cell number. this step was a must to get VoLTE working. once they associated S7Active IMEI with my cell number, i rebooted the Note FE and VoLTE was active. i occasionally receive calls and the HD Voice icon appears on the dialer screen; i assume the other person is calling me via Wifi when i see the icon. Video calling and Wifi calling haven't worked for me on none of my international devices. once i got my UK note 8, i applied the same CSC content (after rooting my device), i inserted the same ATT sim used in the Note FE, reset network settings and VoLTE and HD Voice (when receiving calls) still works.
I don't know about the Korean model, but here is how you get Volte on ATT on the Note 8 F model. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73851525&postcount=308 After you slightly modify the zip and flash this, you must call ATT and give the friendly customer service person the IMEI of a phone purchased from ATT directly that is roughly equivalent and had Volte and wifi calling features. I used an old S7. ATT will NOT accept an IMEI of any phone not sold by ATT. Once they put it into their system, reboot your Note 8 and whala - wifi calling and Volte work perfectly.

Kind of a NOOB when it comes to all this. I haven't flashed or done any phone hacking in a few years (my s4 was the last phone I really played with).
SO I downloaded the CSC Selection V1.2.1 on Android Filehost
I honestly do not know what to do from here.
Thanks.

did you try resetting network settings to at least get LTE going? Under Settings->Connections->More Settings there's an option titled Reset Network Settings and, i had to use that on my Korean, Note Fan Edition to get LTE working. Or are you good to go on LTE?
