so this has been bugging from the moment i got the phone. i cant make google now to work. ive searched all over the internet and no solution. here's what's happening.
everytime i open google now (long press home button/google apk from app drawer) it will just go straight to some screen that i think is the old google search

no cards no anything. If i press the mic, google now works properly and for example if I say weather it will show me the weather card (and if i restart the app the weather card wont be there) or if i say call/text someone it will work. what wont work is the reminders. if i try to set a reminder it will ask me to opt in to google now (even though i already have) and if i tap on opt in it will just take me to the same screen.
on google now settings there is no settings about cards or a way to turn off google now. i got only three options voice, phone search and privacy & accounts. ive done all the settings correct (ticked all the location options on latitude etc, ticked to search on google.com domain, chose us english as language and set home address) and still it wont work.
i already tried to force stop the app and clear cache and data, uninstalled updates and reinstalled, reboted phone and nothing seems to work.
the first time i opened google now it informed me about it and tapped on yes im in and after that it went to that wrong screen (with no cards, no google above the search bar etc).
does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Edit -Also that isn't the old search. You've turned it off from when you first started it... Maybe you exitted it so you declined the terms... Now NSA can spy on you or what ever . Have fun

and unfortunately i dont have these options in the settings. as i already said i only have the last three options (voice, phone search and privacy&accounts).
Edit- im pretty sure i turned it on on first use, but still if its not the old search and its just turned off i cant turn it back on, there isnt an option to do it. and when i talk to it and ask questions it talks back... doesnt that mean its on?
Also, some languages do not support Google Now. Changing your system language to English USA will get it to work. Don't ask me why. English Malaysia doesn't work but Singapore does...

Yes of course, try it - it'll replace the old gtalk app though
I probably deserve to get flamed for this one but....
Is there an indicator somewhere that tells you if the person you are sending a message to is actively logged in? I used to use the chat feature built into Gmail and it would place a green dot next to the people who were online.

Not really. Some people are saying that the greyed out contacts are the offline ones, but comparing between 'hangouts' on my tablet and gtalk on my phone, that doesn't appear to be accurate.
Pretty annoyed by this app. Talk was perfect, and it was a staple of both the desktop and mobile Google experience. And now they've stripped it of some of its most useful features.
It reeks of yet another effort to push us all onto their ****ty social network.

Yeah I agree with you on that one, everything is moving towards Google+.
Which, in all honesty, wouldn't be so bad. The G+ app is really slick, just not much use for me since most of my friends are using other social media sites.
Thanks!!

Its their new approach they aren't gonna change it. Some kind of watermarks appear based on the level of activity - though i haven't figured out how that works yet
I updated it successfully but just cant sign in it failing over & over again, does it not work on 2.3.6 gingerbread?

Ya they did take some actually all useful features from us the online indicator to see whos online away or off there device which is nice so ur not waking people up for a video call or message, Cant merge contacts the same any more or delete them as u could with google talk. It seems like there trying to make it like apples face time which has its own ups and downs but is a lot simpler so i kinda understand linking the phone numbers and stuff but why push this BS feature less app out to all of us with android without having it perfect all this did was set everyone on android back not forward so far

Here's the working way: disconnect Talk from Google Play with Titanium Backup. Now it won't update and you won't have to install Hangouts.
Update: no, it doesn't. Everything is back after rebooting.

A long time galaxy nexus user here, and since i think facebook 2.0 or 1.9 there have been a random rectangle the pops up when pressing back two times in a row from the firends list. Now i thought it was just my nexus, but now on the One i've been getting it too. Its easy to avoid but still annoying. Using ARHD rom. With latest facebook app.
From sense, I enter the facebook app/ fb messenger app, click the the freinds list / online tab scroll down to see who's online, press back twice to go to home screen then bam! A random reactangle appears. Now i can avoid this by pressing back once and scrolling through the timeline/ conversation list on facebook or anything inbetween the 1st back press and second back press (if you know what i mean)
Anyone at all can reproduce this?

I can't find the option now, but it was "chat heads" or something.
I have no idea what that is, but in response to BenPope, I use chat heads and no they don't do that at all.
It happens to me for some reason. I just open the facebook / messenger app. Click on the friends tab. Press back twice and then a rectangle appears.so strange

Can you guts tell me what widgets you're using or your home screen set up ? Thank you!
I tried reproducing what you said, nothing happens. It's odd that you say it happened on your nexus aswell, which would make me think its not a common bug but instead some app that you personally use which is interfering with facebook and causing the rectangle to form. Look around, close background processes and then see if it happens.
And if worst comes to worst..only click the back button....once.

Do you have any old phone laying around which you do reset and try on without any other apps?
I've seen this before too. It simply means the icon is selected. If we had hardware keys, hitting enter would open it. I don't quite know how to remove it though. Does tapping somewhere other than the icon deselect it?

If youre rooted and got custom recovery, make a nandroid and then factory reset your phone and try it out. Thatll tell you if the app itself has a glitch, or if its because of your setup of the phone

So I have a shortcut either in my social folder or just an icon on the main homescreen, open app, slecect the top right corner online firends tab, wait to see the green dots, then press back twice .
Thanks!
Nothing. I did it slow, fast, but nothing happens, I return to the home screen. I just flashed a new ROM as well (paranoid) bit it didn't work on ARHD either. So I'm guessing it definitely has something to do with your phones setup. Something that you had on your nexus and have on this phone as well.

How did you solve it? I'm having the same issue, everything is all grayed out. This happened to me before and I had to do a factory reset, I really don't want to do that again. This incomming call announce just started a few days ago again, and the read notifications aloud is all grayed out under the language and input settings. I have talkback disabled and voice control is turned off. Any help would be appreciated!

Are you restoring any system setting you had backup from your previous phone via Mybackup Pro. That's what was causing problem for me because was restoring system settings I had backup with MyBackup Pro with my S4 and restoring it onto my S5 which causing grayed out on settings.
I never used MyBackup pro. I just transferred my Google contacts. I guess I just have to do a factory reset again. I really do not understand the need for this feature outside of vehicle use. I really don't need everyone in my office knowing who is calling.

Does anybody know how to get voice answering working without caller ID readout? I need the ability answer a call in my pocket while at work, but i don't want it reading out string of numbers, or the fact that my mother is calling. I'd rather tell by ringtone.
I posted the same question in the Verizon section, and the only answer was to turn it all off.
I have all the boxes under (Language and input->Read notifications aloud) unchecked.
bug in 4.4.2
I am on a custom ketan rom
Build XXUFND3
Tried every solution on the various forums but could not disable voice caller id on favourite contacts
Finally I tried this
Hand free mode settings
Even if it is off. ..
Yet untick incoming call.
And lo
The caller id got disabled

After reading many forums and tearing my phone apart, I finally figured this one out. I had the same problem many others were reporting, with anyone in my Favorites having their names announced when they called, even though I'd turned off Talkback and any other voice stuff. What I had noticed was that in Settings/ Language And Input/Notification Readout, all five options were checked but greyed out so I couldn't uncheck them. And "Calls from favourite contacts" was the one causing me all the trouble.
The solution on a Galaxy S5 running 4.4.2 is to use two fingers to pull down the Notification Bar, and then from that bunch of icons you see turn ON Hands-Free Mode (which is the old Driving Mode - it has a steering wheel icon).
Now, go back to Settings/Language And Input/Notification Readout and you'll be able to uncheck all those 5 options. After you've done that, go back to the Notification Bar and turn OFF the Hands-Free Mode. Job done!
Ok
I have a brand new Droid Turbo that is having problems with Google Now. I get no Cards. The Google now screen is blank except for the past 3 searched items.
If I swipe from the left and hit settings/Now Cards the first item is Show card which is off and I can't change it and it has an error messages under it that says "Network error. Check your network connection and try again."
I can browse the internet fine with all apps be it WiFi or Verizon 4G. I have tried to clear data from the Google App, I've uninstalled the latest update, I have done two factor resets. My Nexus 7 gets to this just fine. Any clues?
Thanks.

I can browse the internet fine with all apps be it WiFi or Verizon 4G. I have tried to clear data from the Google App, I've uninstalled the latest update, I have done two factor resets. My Nexus 7 gets to this just fine. Any clues?
Thanks.

I have the same exact issue too. Only it happens with certain apps too. Reddit sync pro is the worst/slowest app with the most lag. I made a thread on XDA a bit ago about the poor wireless/wifi performance,

Seems like many brands of routers paired with the Droid Turbo are acting up. Some report turning off IPV6 worked for them. It doesn't for me. I don't think it's a router issue as HTC and Apple devices work perfectly over wifi.
Hopefully Motorola gets the message...

You have completely misunderstood my problem.
I'm not having any lag nor are there any REAL network issues. My Google Now is blank. It doesn't show ANY cards. The error message says I have a network problem but I can use the phone just fine. Something is screwed up on Google Now. This has nothing to do with routers or anything of that nature.

Well, it just sounds mighty similar to what I and many others are experiencing.
Try it with wifi off and see if it does the same thing. For me, using verizons radio/data app grab data snappy like it should be. Wifi is my turbos issue.
Generally the turbo needs 2-3 tries of refreshing in in the play store, reddit sync, chrome and so on before loading images. For instance, the play store will show app tiles but take forever to load the icon. The wifi lag/poor responsiveness is intermittent happening around 50% the time an app needs data via wifi. Considering you just got your phone it might creep up on more apps as you use your phone. Just throwing it out there.
I also have the app Trend. Different apps show different errors and Trend will say "No data connection found" when my phone is acting shi**y over wifi. Refreshing it a couple of times generally restores data.
Had this issue just two days ago after refomatting my device and may have declined a google location setting. I posted my fix over in the Google help forums and this is what worked for me two days ago and its still working
Another thing to try that worked for me is> Google settings in the app drawer>Account History>Turn off Web&App Activity/Device Information/Voice & Audio Activity/ Youtube search History/ Youtube watch History/Google location History> wait five minutes and turn it all back on.
I tried this after i didnt know if it was my device or my account. so I deleted my google account from the phone and installed my wifes account and found "google now" worked perfect, so I knew it was in my account settings which was a relief. Thats how I found whats above worked for me. Maybe if the above doesnt work for you do as i did and install another persons google account on the phone see if the "google now "works then if it does then you know its your account, and try the above that worked for me.

Thanks,
I tried a second fake google account and it brought the Google Now wizard right up. So it is some kind of authentication issue or file corruption either in the phone or at google. Though my Nexus 7 works just fine so I doubt it is an issue with the account on google's end. I'll try your recipe and see if that clears it.
Let us know if it works.

Good!!!
I searched all of the internets for a solution and didnt find anything. One time I did a voice google "remind me" and instead of saying this "is not avalible on this device" it said " enable web & app activity" so thats how I came up with the solution. Maybe you didnt have to do all that deleting the history, but I did and thats what worked. Glad it worked for you and a couple of others on the google help forum. Makes me feel like a big wig! LOL.. Thanks for the "thanks"

Yep there is no way to really know if that was a necessary step or it was swatting flies with nuclear weapons. But it got the job done and now I can finally enjoy my new phone. Accidentally washed my Moto X so this has been totally frustrating until now.
the above solution is the only thing that worked for me... htc one m8

I am having a dumbazz period. lol. I could not find the above on my Droid Turbo. Google settings in the app drawer is what I can't figure out. This is Greek to me. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

Thank you so much. It makes a lot of sense now.
I had this same problem when I purchased this phone coming from Moto X with 5.0.
Solved this by excluding the cards preferences in google settings.
After excluding this preferences, google now started working.

You can maybe search for a tutorial to mod the framework.
New build is up but sim don't work... again.
So if you are using 0330 don't even download.
Btw where is the chat room
I see. No problem. Good luck !
It's 3 hours now, that it dissapeared... :'(
The second fix .sh script from the RIL thread is also working?
Sorry for the inconvenience! The chatroom disappeared lol. I'll find another which will be hopefully more reliable than the previous one.

Wouldn't it be wiser to open a chat on some service that:
1. has a mobile app (so we can access it from phone too)
2. allows us to send links?
For example Google Hangouts or something like that.

The problem with mobile apps is the fact that you need to make an account, not many people like that. Second thing is, when flashing, having an app on the phone is pretty useless. Third problem is with things like hangouts, your personal profile is exposed and I'm sure not many people would like that ._.
Anyways, I have a surprise in store for you guys and the dev :3, will put up the link when it is done.
