[Q] Need help with installing ROM and a few Questions - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA forum, I'm new here and only recently obtained my Android Device. I have a few issues which I would greatly appreciate receiving help from, and this forum seems like the best place to do so.
My Sony Xperia Z was bought from China, so when I first turned it on, it didn't appear to have the Google Play Store or any other Google Apps. My theory is that the Android Firmware on my phone is a Chinese version, which doesn't include anything Google related. From my research, I've been thinking about flashing a non-Chinese version of Android onto my phone, however I do have a few questions related to this before I undergo this procedure.
Assuming I do successfully install another version of Android onto my phone (Australian Version was what I had in mind), will I automatically get the Google Play Store along with everything else Google or will it not work?
Secondly, does flashing a new Android onto my Xperia Z require my device to be rooted and its bootloader unlocked?
Finally, I also read about the custom recovery which is I assume compulsory for a new ROM to be installed. As I do not have a Google Store on my phone, can I just access the download website from my phone and directly download it to my phone? If so, what does the custom recovery actually do?
Thanks.

Android phones sell in China don't have google Apps installed by default. You need to
1) first, root your phone (unlocking bootloader is NOT needed, just root)
2) second, install a custom recovery (cwm for example)
3) download gapps from goo.im
besure you choose the proper version. and put it in your SD card.
4) reboot to recovery, flash gapps.
good luck.

or, there are many custom ROMs in place and most of them consist of google Apps, so another option is to root and flash a custom ROM

Do the Stock ROMs that can be downloaded from XDA which are "Global" or from any country other than China come with Google Apps when flashed into the phone without being manually added from goo.im?

Yes they do. The easiest way for you to change your rom is to download a generic ftf then flash it with flashtool. I am personally using the generic Spanish version of 423 (Android 4.2.2).
You do not need to root, unlock your bootloader or install a custom recovery to do this.

[Stock][Lollipop 5.0.2][Root & Recovery][LB/UB] D6502/03 23.1.A.1.28 | Complete Guide
Dear friends,
AsI have already given the complete guide and necessary files to install the pre rooted Lollipop 5.0.2 with the build number 23.1.A.0.726 for both the D6502/6503 variants, now I'm here with the pre rooted latest release of 5.0.2 Lollipop with build number, 23.1.A.1.28
For those who who don't know about the previous post with the pre rooted lollipop of 23.1.A.0.726 for D6502/6503 variants installation guide, can go through this link.
This method is for both Locked and Unlocked Bootloaders . It includes root and XZDual recovery 2.8.15
Requirements
Download the proper flashable zip from below links.
1. Flashable zip of 23.1.A.1.28 for D6502 variant
2. Flashable zip of 23.1.A.1.28 for D6503 variant
Steps to install pre rooted 23.1.A.1.28 firmware.
1. Download the proper D6502/6503 flashable zip from the link given above.
2. Copy the flashable zip into external sd card.
3. Boot your phone into recovery (TWRP is recommended)
4. Flash the zip.
5. Clear Cache/Dalvik and reboot!
6. The first boot may take some time. (No need to flash ftf for kernel. This time I have included the kernel with the zip itself)
That's all!! check your root with this application from playstore. Its a free application only. (Credits to the developers)
Steps for those Non rooted users
It doesn't matter, whether you are in .726 or .28 firmware. All you need is just follow all the steps given below.
1. First goto this thread.
2. Download the first five files from that thread.
3. Follow upto the 19th step.
3.1 Among that 19 steps, the 5th step needs a modification.
5. Copy the flashable.zip to your external sd card and remember the location, where its been copied. And, Switch off your phone
Here you have to copy the above given 23.1.A.1.28 flashable zip.4. After the 19th step, just flash the flashable_65XX_23.1.A.1.28.zip file. (XX refers your variant i.e. 6502/6503)
5. Clear Cache/Dalvik.
6. Reboot the phone.
Congrats!! you have installed the pre rooted Lollipop 5.0.2 with the build number 23.1.A.1.28 for your Xperia Z2, D6502/6503.
The complete guide for root your Xperia Z2 with the newest firmware lollipop 5.1.1 (23.4.A.0.546) is available in this thread.

Yep, if you are already rooted you just need to install custom recovery and then flashed this one that is already pre rooted and that has recovery already. To install recovery in an easy way you just need to download XZ Recovery apk you just need to tap intall recovery and if everything goes right it will reboot into recovery, remember that after you flash the rom you need to wipe dalvik and cache.
Thanks

Any word on what the difference is between Taiwan firmware and any european country customization?
I doubt it's the usual case of essentially no difference, given the SGP311 has only a handful of generic firmwares compared to xperia devices with mobile radios. It's also the only non-europe firmware available (from what I've read Customized PH is grouped with europe in spite of the geography)

I got the root guide from this post:

As for languages, all languages are available. When you first start the tablet, a first start guide will run. The first screen lets you select virtually any language. Once you select it, all future prompts will be in the language you selected. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, by installing lollipop you loose recovery...so there's no easy way back
In a nutshell, you must go back to a kit-kat ROM, root it (e.g. install .283, then install .230 KERNEL ONLY and force towel root from flash tool. Then install 283 KERNEL back) and then install NUTs dual recovery.
More detailed instructions can be found here.

Thank you very much for your reply. I feel pretty stupid - I was very happy with CM and only wanted to try out the stock rom, never would've done so if I had realized it was not easy to go back.
Any ideas then about a possible resolution for the random reboots? Never happened on this tablet before, stock or CM. When I flashed this stock lollipop rom I did not do a full wipe, I did wipe the caches.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 AM ----------
Well I've gone from bad to worse I used those instructions - I had used this process before to gain root - and got the the part in the procedure where flashtool reboots the device to flash 10.5.1.A.0.283.
Now the tablet cycles through the Sony Xperia screen over and over - it will not boot to system and will not go into flashmode. I can get into fastboot mode but I'm not sure what I can do to resolve this from there.
Again, any help is appreciated.

OK - looks like I got it - I simply flashed the twrp recovery image in fastboot mode and that did the trick - restoring my lovely cm 12 now.
All set - thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
How did you install it? Downloaded the zip file but not sure which tool I should use.
EDIT: Never mind. Flashtool has really come a long way. I used it to get the firmware and then install it. Can't ask for more than that.
has anyone tried using philz touch 6?
Hi, just wondering where did you get the twrp recovery image that you can flash in fastboot? Thanks in advance, I'm currently in bootloop as well

No, you must upgrade to the marshmallow bootloader and unlock that one by following the directions in hsbadr's other thread. Then you flash the Stock Restore in Odin.
So i have a developer edition, can i just odin this and go? or do i have to install and unlock a bootloader as well? root/unlocking took so long i didnt keep up.

The only time you guys can flash directly any MM ROM is when you already on MM Unlocked bootloader and rooted. If you are on 5.1.1 Unlocked and rooted, you have to follow the OP instructions, doesn't matter if you have retails or Dev Edition.
And here we go.
Anyone have any recommendations on how to backup my Android install before I flash this?

The first link goes to the BPA1 download. I didn't notice, and ended up waiting about 30 minutes for it to download before I saw it .
This method is exclusively for Developer Editions, right? Retail users have to follow the steps listed in this thread? Otherwise both methods get users to CPD1?
Never mind, I see it says Retail/Dev in the thread title...
Missing Applications Manager?
So I went through this process twice, the first time because wifi wasn't working and the application manager (Settings -> Application) was missing.
On the second shot, wifi was working again, but I'm still missing the app manager.
Where I expect Applications, I see Application Settings (the part where you can set the default program, etc.)
Did this happened to anyone else?
Anyone have a fix for this?
I have a developer edition Note 4 and am currently on 4.4.4 ANJ5. If I upgrade to CPD1, can I safely downgrade to any prior release (4.4, 5.0, 5.1, etc.)?
Would I follow the same process as going from 4.4 to 5.1 and vice versa?
I've found that I like 4.4 better than any of the 5.0 ROM's, but I want to try 6.0 now that it is out.
Thank in advance for your help!

If you unlock it and install twrp, you can try flashing SuperSu then. But if you root the stock rom it might not boot, that was the case with LL. Had to flash custom kernel.

If you use the Jasmine ROM v6.0.1 by hsbadr - which is almost like stock MM - you can get root. Jasmine ROM has the custom Multisystem kernel for MM to root.

I did, but not with the Applications manager. After going ODIN back to 5.1.1, unlocking and upgrading the bootloader and then applying the MM Safe upgrade, twice, I got wifi, but not Applications manager.
I ended up using the full firmware found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937 and just flashing straight to 6.0.1.
I don't have root, a locked boot loader, complaints about dm-verity and DRK in recovery mode, but I have a working MM with Wifi and Applications manager and Android Pay.
I'm happy at the moment, thanks for the help.

Root ZE550KL with no pc.

Hey guys! I have an Asus Zenfone 2 laser ZE550KL, and I'd like to root it. I tried to root it following this guide:
https://devs-lab.com/root-asus-zenfone-2-laserze550kl.html , because I didn't want to wipe all my data. Unfortunately it didn't work (at least my phone is still alive), and I honestly got angry because I unlocked my bootloader, losing my warranty, and I can't even root my phone without deleting all my data. Can you please, guys, try to do something to make rooting this phone, way more easier and faster? Thank you and have a good day.
Why dont you transfer all of your data to an sd card? And I don't know if rooting the phone without pc is a thing yet..? You could also try doing a backup of your settings and stuff on a sd card, do the root, fetch the backup from the card and execute it. It sould work with some apps from the playstore that don't need root, atleast I think.

You should update your phone to MM and go to the Asus's support page there is a .apk for the bootloader, that application will unlock the bootloader, and you're good to go with rooting and furthermore modifying your phone. But first unlock the bootloader, otherwise you will brick your phone. Trust me official bootloader unloocker works fine.

I've already unlocked it with the official tool, I was just looking for a better and easier way to root my phone
Phone based rooting tools are unreliable as they rely on exploits that may or may not work depending on various factors

It's just I'm so scared to brick my phone, damn it
You should just get a pc, and you need like 10 minutes to do everything, from bootloader to root..

And I recommend you to update your phone to the latest firmware, MM, and do that on your phone in System Update app. After that unlock the bootloader, you can find the official apk on Asus support site for z00ed. Just fire up the application and go trough all steps, your phone should reboot. Don't worry, this wont hurt your phone, if you do it the way I wrote it. I'll post the link to the unlock app here later. After that you just go with the adb root method, I'll post the link to that topic here also. Nothing to be afraid of.

how to?
How did you made it?
Nothing different as with Android P,
1. boot unlocked
2. installed twrp with odin.
3.Instantly restart in twrp after installing.
4. install magisk
works normal
Hi,
i cannot get my phone to reboot once twrp is installed.
Got any clue?
Thanks
Is there any procedure that properly roots Android 10 stable without leading to an infinite bootloop?
I am able to root but biometric stopped working.
Not sure how to fix that

Right, install twrp through odin, make sure you boot straight into twrp from download mode. Then wipe date and reboot recovery not the system. Then flash the multi disable zip from the download link. Then flash magisk and reboot. All done
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TBp5hIrzIljYvOquI1H9L78YFtskxMDn/view?usp=drivesdk
So what if I already have twrp on my android 9 ,but now I wanna flash android 10
You got me there bud, My advice would to try a dirty flash to android 10 with Odin, but chances are you may need to flash twrp again not to sure.
Thanks, so what would I need to install twrp on my android 10(s9)
Just follow the instructions above with the link you need to flash that file after you flash twrp to stop the boot loop. Obviously you need Odin to flash twrp
Hi there does this work also for Andriod 10 latest UI2 on S9 ? Looking to root my S9 as well . Got it yesterday updated to the latest software . Tried to use it without root but too many apps that I use depends on it . Thanks

You can do this as long as Indian firmware also labels as G960F. I am on Philippines and I'm using firmware from United Arab Emirates.
