1) +1 (a bug. I believe if you disable STAMINA power mode it works, but haven't tried it)
2) +1 (the rest probably consumed by Android system)

Any one know how to free up more RAM without root. My free RAM is very low and I think thats the reason why Firefox crashes randomly.
And where is the rest of my 1GB RAM?

Actually, I'd also like to know what's using the remaining 200MB or so of the 1GB RAM. Is it the system? Surely the system is already included in the used RAM indicator? Or maybe it's for the graphics?
I do find it annoying that with its advertised 1GB RAM the SP all too easily appears to run out of memory. Loading up complex pages in Opera set for "desktop" user agent frequently causes background apps to be kicked out. Sometimes even Opera appears to be booted out for using too much RAM! This shouldn't happen on a modern 1GB RAM device, when there's still around 200MB RAM free, and a further 200+MB "missing". It's a bit of a joke really... Now I can begin to understand why the latest hardware has 2GB.
Seems 200MB is reserved for the system. And also XBMC seems to use alot of cache memory. Removed XBMC and turned of alot of Sony apps and now I have a decent amount of RAM left.

So, I think everyone still dunno what the "1GB" RAM mean...
usually in android phone, the 1GB RAM was not exactly 1GB, normal scaling is 7XXMB user and system access RAM + 2XX MB system hardware reserve RAM (usually ur GPU - it's like the old Intel GMA)
Then 7XXMB user and system access RAM is further separate to user access RAM and system process reserve RAM (just see how's they scaling)
And it same as other market advertise 2GB, 512MB, etc Android Phone, even S4's user and system access RAM also approx 1.8GB instead of "2GB"
U all are still haven see how's Samsung stock ROM make their RAM usage always in busy usage (If someone got use S Advance with updated JB Stock ROM then u should know)
If got time u all should read this:

What's xbmc?
Sent from my C5303 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
XBMC is Xbox Media Center. It was first developed for the original Xbox.
Now its available for all platforms like Android, , Windows, Linux even Rasperry Pi. Its a complete media center solution with any function you can think of.
Google it, its really interesting. It has full media functionality with its own UI. You can watch movies, stream tv shows through internet, listen to music, run software, its almost a stand alone operating system.
Under Android you can even use your phone as a remote/ keyboard to navigate through XBMC while having it installed on an Android tv stick.

i got the xpeia sp recently and im a bit sad about the multitasking of a mid range android phone and i want to find a solution, i have another really cheap chinese quad core phone and the ram is 1gb too, in the info at antutu benchmark it says 971 mb whereas the sp says 766! im sure there is a solution out there to make the most of the ram and get better multitasking, can anyone with cyanogenmod rom tell us their ram value please?

also some of it s used by the Adreno 320 GPU.
both phones when empty from bloatware, the xperia sp free ram is 260mb and the chinese phone is 422 mb, why?!!!! i want the value to change at antutu benchmark device info to 971 mb instead of 766 mb is there a way??
We have 1 GB of RAM. Aprox 200/250 mb is for system. For:
- Camera; filming does not work without enough RAM
- GPU; If you have a PC and you game a lot you know what i mean
Also for being able to connect, and have the system running smooth there is RAM needed.
About your LED issue:
Stamina mode enabled? If yes disable it or download illumination bar pro
It has been stated many times by sony that stanima mode disables the LED to save battery

The Chinese "Super" phone you refer to more than likely has no manufacturer skin like Touchwiz etc, and zero bloatware thats why it has more free ram.
with a MTK Cortex A7 processor, as for performance goes it cannot compare to the Xperia SP.
you've already been told some of the Ram is reserved for the GPU/Imaging camera system etc.
tweaking androids internal Minfree values can with multi-tasking.

Does the froyo update make the full 512 mb ram available? I had heard earlier that only a part of it was available due to 2.1 limitations.

They were always available, ~300Mb for Programs and the rest for the system files... Why should that change?
I think what the OP meant was whether one had more memory for apps as ht tp:// developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html claims that the 2.6.32 kernel upgrade would bring "HIGHMEM support for RAM >256MB".
At the moment, we do not have the full memory available in the Linux system:
Code:
$ adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
$ free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 333420 329988 3432 0 34724
Swap: 0 0 0
Total: 333420 329988 3432
I do not know whether that is related to the graphics hardware taking some of the memory, or to the kernel version:
Code:
$ uname -r
2.6.29
Edit: What do you mean by 'system files'? The OS is stored on mass storage, right? And Dalvik and friends should appear as userspace processes taking up regular memory.

You do understand that this does not compute, since there has always been more than 256MB available
Or has there?
I was wondering about the same thing, kernel 2.6.32.9 (JP3) also shows a little more than 300mb...

Are you sure, max i got on my nexus one was 312MB in some rare cases, using it without closing apps at all, never got below 100MB... But my Galaxy's max is 170MB, is almost half what my nexus gave me, that kinda suck (don't know if it matter bu tit feels bad in my head )
Desire has 576MB memory.. N1 has 512MB

As long as it doesn't go below that ~70mb when the phones actually start lagging
Might also want to take into consideration that the counterpart Desire used in this thread is also an android phone, sure too much free memory is wasted memory but too little usable memory = lag and if there isn't a lot to use in the first place then it won't take much for the phone to start lagging.
Some help in JG and onward firmwares but it's still quite funny that a simple user can make a fix to create a solution for the entire problem and Samsung hasn't either thought about this or taken it into consideration. (Mimocan is my hero <3)
edit: WOO my first post after actually following these forums for almost half a year, just registered recently
Hey,
Actually you do not need that much RAM. Im running on JG5, which IMO is the most stable and usable firmware out there. Has been running the phone for 3 days straight without any ATK like apps, and has not experience any lags.
Another thing is that, IMHO ATKs slow down the system.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The current Samsung froyo builds do not support highmem. It is a kernel compile time config option. Samsung will hopefully enable it in later builds.
Highmem made a noticeable difference in performance on my nexus one.

Nonsense. You are not entitled to more free ram in any way.
Every os uses a part of the ram for the kernel code and its buffers.
In addition the advanced graphics will need memory for its texture storage and graphic representation.
A froyo kernel will not make a major difference.
The sg has 512 memory today and it is using it as it should...

lagging is actually not caused by to less free ram, in android there is no such. the used ram is caused by apps that you opened and then exited again. if you open a new app that needs more ram than aviailable (actually with a little gap of some mb) the system will close apps that are not used anymore and only kept in ram for faster opening. the lag comes from bad i/o speeds of the nand (internal memory) where apps data is stored. on i7500 there is 192mb of ram and it works ok with froyo (thanx to drakaz and gaosp team!) only thing is that every app you open forces the app you opened before to be kicked out of ram what makes switching between apps makes somewhat a pain.
also free memory and usable memory is apples and pears, useable is all memory that contains no actually running in foreground app or service. and free memory is the rest that contains absolutely no information and thus WASTED
edit: btw i7500 is running well with 20mb free ram.
I often have no more than 30 MBs free, and not running THAT many apps. What is strange is that sometimes there is 70-80 MB free, and I have not done anyting. What happens in the background is a mystery... Any suggestions?

just wondering, there's a pretty low amount of available ram (~300-350 somtimes 400 after cleaning memory).
currently im running stock 4.1.2
so, if i will flash any cm rom or any other rom, will there be more ram available?
or that's it?
thanks in advance.

Because it's frustrating to close apps\clean ram all the time. it would be nice to have about 50-100mb for extra free ram.

Free RAM is wasted RAM... RAM is way faster that the usual storage. That's why the system preloads as many apps as possible, to start up directly, without loading too long. So, the more used RAM you have, the better. Linux is not Windows. Windows is known for its bad RAM management.
Also, 300Mb is quite a lot BTW regarding 1GB total RAM. Killing apps to "safe" memory is the worst thing you can do. Let the system decide what's needed and what's not.
Also, Questions belong into the Q&A section. Thread moved.
my friend , android works that way. it caches everything to ram so that is faster. you dont need more ram and of course u dont need any task manager to close the background apps. the system on its own knows when to free ram and use it somewhere else. if the case is u need to play a game which need more available ram than the phone can have ( for example lets say the phone needs at least 200 ram for the basic system functions so u have available 800 ram and the game needs 1gb ram then thats another case.) u can install swapper to use some disk space to do what ram does. thats all. but if u dont need or play such game then no need for swapper , no need to clear cache and no need to close background apps. if u think u will get more battery life like that , its also wrong. there is another way to get battery life. thats all. hope i covered u.

You told that there is no need for task manager , so what's the use of these many task manager apps ??
I'm really confused , because as I clean my ram the speed boosts .
So we should not use task manger apps ?!!
And sth else is that , why our ram capacity is 977 instead of 1024 ?

where do u see speedboost when you clean ram in android ? Really ?
the only case this can happen is only if u play for example one of my favorites : dungeon hunter 4 and forget to close the app. At least for some time until the os decides that ok u just forgot it there and close it , u have a decrease of fps at your phone ... eh ok if u forget to push the little button to close an app that needs a big amount of resources, then the task manager is usefull. The apps are apps. There are also 10 different apps to sync google contacs but why use them if google contacts are syncing by default if u dont close the sync ?
lol thanks now i understand

I tried clean master yesterday but the result was not great... I search some tuto about how to use it and if I understand well, it's just a task killer.
I also tried an experiment : I enabled the little widget (in clean master) which show the percentage of RAM used in real time, then I opened a game (dear hunter 2014).
After 1 minute in the game, the percentage of RAM used (if the information of clean master is exact) was 67% and suddenly, the widget disappeared : I think all the app in background had been closed. So why? It shouldn't happend because a lot of RAM was free.
And finally, even with all app in background killed, after 2/3 minutes, I have a FC in the game...
So if someone has an idea/theory about what happen with RAM management, I would be very happy to know!

First of all you can click the thanks button .That's why it is there to shorten the length of telling thanks.Back to our point.
LMT things that your game is eating a lot ram and doesn't know if you are really using it.So it kills it to save up ram.
Each games uses different amount of ram.Like a 2d game would use 50mb ram and a 3d game may use 100mb of ram.
It depends on.Xperia SP has a bad ram management for now and onwards to the next version (4.3) it will be fixed a lot.
The rollout starts early Feb / ends of Jan...You can wait a little can't you?

My RAM usage is about that high, 700mb. But since the Z1 has about 1.6 gb of RAM, you shouldn't really worry. If it does get to the point where apps stop working or services become unresponsive, restart the phone or kill the app that's using the RAM. I believe when your RAM usage is about 1.5 GB it starts becoming a bit unresponsive.
Nexus uses less RAM because it only has stock apps. Sony has their own software running in the background along with some of Google's apps.

That doesn't makes sense. As long as your device isn't unresponsive or laggy you shouldn't bother about RAM-Usage. Android handles your available Memory quite well.
Try looking at it like this:
There isn't any use in having more and more RAM, if people on the other hand go and try to keep the RAM-usage low. As long as you don't have problems (lags or such) having free RAM is just eyecandy.
Additionally:
For every app killed, Android needs to load it from storage the next time, resulting in more battery drain than just letting it idle in memory

It's a kind of thread like this one for Arc
but for Z1 somewhere, I remember a saw that thread with a list of apps to uninstall, search for it.
Hi,
I'm a bit surprised that if I add free memory and used memory from the Settings app the total is about 1.7 gb. Ain't we supposed to get 2gb? I hope sony didn't do the hdd trick (see wikipedia page on Kibibyte, I cannot post link as a junior member) and even so 2000000/1048576 = 1.907 ... where's my ram?
Under CPU-Z that show : 1.732Mb.
Your OS doesn't need RAM to function right?

yes it does but I thought it will be included in the "used memory"... if the OS takes 300 mb that's ok but why I only got 900 mb free when I kill all apps? I used to have a nexus 4 and with the same amount of memory on chip there was a *LOT* more available in the settings menu.

That 900MB figure is about the same I normally have free. Various apps and services take up about 800MB on my phone, which seems excessive but I've turned off all background stuff that I can (some Google and Xperia services just won't go away, however). The only good news is that Android will free up memory if it's needed so that 900MB is not a finite figure (at least that's what I assume).
Hmm. I generally have no more than about 300 mb free memory at any given moment. Even just a few minutes after reboot. No weird apps or excessive widgets. Do you guys really have 900 mb free? You can check your memory on the fly using Cool Tool from Google Play.
The Z3C has 2GB of RAM, don't worry. What you are missing is used by shared graphics memory. BTW: This is exactly the reason why the Z3 has 3GB of memory (instead of 2GB) for its screen resolution is full HD opposed to "only" HD on the Z3C.
Anyhow, is it really necessary to start another thread on the same topic if there already is one?

I have never had any doubts about the two gigs. But how much free memory do you have on your Z3C after a reboot and after a few hours of typical usage? My other phones with this much ram have generally had a lot more memory available at any given moment. Not that *free* memory is of any particular use in android, but I'm still curious to see whether your Z3C's are the same.

When I boot up the phone and immediatly check it shows some 800MB of free memory. About 500 to 600MB after a couple of days, fluctuating though. However, don't think these numbers have any meaning for Android keeps as much in memory as possible in order to increase responsiveness. It also depends on the Apps installed and the bloat disabled/blocked. Further, comparing it to other phones you had earlier might also be misleading since the version of Android could be a different one, hence comparing apples to apples would just not be possible.
