I think it's awesome! I use it at my house when I can't find my remote control or when I'm too damn lazy and it's too far away lol. Also when I'm at the mall I mess around in Target and Best Buy and amuse my friends by changing the channels and volume hahaha.
Now I've been using the Samsung WatchON app that came with the phone... little did I know there are a million other "Remote Control" apps on the Play Store. Does anyone use the IR Blaster, and if so what app do you use?!
I've used it, but I was disappointed in the remote control functions. Way too basic. I'll have to check out the app store to see what else is available. Thanks for the heads up on that.
I use it all the time with watch on on all my tvs in the house. Don't need a fancy remote to change channels. I love to use it at the bar or restaurant we are at. The look on people's faces when it's close to the end of the game or the winning shot and bam tv turns off....

Same here.
It's a neat feature, but I already have a nice universal remote, so there's no great need for an under-functioned app that requires me to wake up the phone to use. Plus, I'm a sucker for hard buttons.

I was thinking of buying a Logitech Harmony remote before purchasing the phone. Unfortunately, the phone won't recognize my soundbar/AV receiver (JBL Cinema SB400) so I think I'll stick with the universal remote.
Note: Did not know there were other remote control apps in the Play store so maybe I'll look into those first.

The best app to use is Smart IR Remote for Galaxy S4. Let me tell you, this app is worth the higher price! You can virtually control everything with it and customize a remote for multiple devices, set macro functions, etc.
I use the app with my Window A/C units (Frigidaire and Whirlpool), time warner box, JVC TV, Vizio TV, Panasonic Soundbar, Panasonic Bluray player, and even this cheap Lasko oscillating fan I have!!!
Theres no need for a logitech harmony remote. This $10 app will cover everything. The Watch On app is pretty basic and I didn't use IR that much, but with the Smart IR Remote app I use IR every day.
EDIT: I can't find the Smart IR app on the play store for some reason right now, but if you search "Smart IR Remote for Galaxy S4" it's the first link to pop up.
I use it to show people with iphones what their devices can't do. In this case they can't say "I'm sure there's an app for that."

Have to agree with this. I use watchon with this app. Though it is pulled from the play store right now for some unknown reason. I guess people will have to get it elsewhere.

Yep same here with 5&3 yr olds remotes always gone. So its nice being able to control all 3 TVs ect from this. Plus the ability to navigate through my DVR and DVD players just like the real thing is bad a**.
First thing I did when I got this phone was go to walmart and started to turn al their tvs on and off and messed with the volumes. They couldnt figure out what the hell was going on. It was priceless. LOL

As a kid, once I heard about what you could do with them, I wanted one of those Casio remote watches. They were too expensive at the time, so I never got one.
I just emailed the Dev about what happened to their app. Waiting to hear back from them.
so i found a really cool smart remote for ir blaster the app is in the playstore it works for everything tv soundbar lights xbox ect its called galaxy s4-htc one remote by TS it works with the aosp rom im on and it works great
Let us know if anybody figures out why smart ir got pulled from the market. I had just gotten all my remotes set up and flashed a new ROM and the app disappeared.

I have been using the Sony Ericsson MW600 for years and this sucker still works for the N7 as well. Best money ever spent on a bt headset. Also has FM transmitter as well, which is a bonus IMO. And yes I can skip and pause tracks.
As for video, there is lag so I wouldn't recommend it for that usage.
I think they are on sale on amazon's gold box deals for 40bux today.

Thanks for the reply.. actually it wasnt a headset I was after, but just an actual remote. So the setup is that I have nexus hooked up to powered speakers through a lead going out of the nexus & I want to effectively use my nexus as a media player (without have a nexus Q LOL)

I just picked up a MOGA game pad, the flatish one. It's pretty great. Best buy price matched amazon so it only ran me $30. Plus it came with pac man and sonic. It also works with deadtrigger, and nova 3 I believe. Theres a root app you can get so you can use it on app though. or at least you could in theory.
Ive tryed every single one... I always go back to the ps3 controller because of the build quality.
I've used PS3 Sixaxius Controller with the Sixaxias Controoller app. I like it the best. With the app, it's fairly robust with quite a bit of games because of the touch profiles you can create with and for it. Another bonus, you can get something like the GameKlip, which makes it easier for gaming on the go.
I've tried the OnLive Universal Controller. Only works with the OnLive app. I could get it to detect in games like Dead Trigger, but couldn't program it. OnLive did something different to where going into the map buttons sections of games only gives one command.
I've installed Wiimote Controller app and synce the Wiimote, but didn't try any games. It's good for emulators.
Using my moga controller because it was free.

I also got it for free, and I am still disappointed with it. It always takes several attempts to get it to sync, and they have it so restricted to what games it will work on, that ruins it IMO.

You don't need the gameklip, but they are really nice. It just holds your phone for you. If you can find somewhere to prop your phone or something all you need is the controller and the sixaxis app.

Yeah I know i dont need a gameklip though it would be nice to be able to play without holding your phone at the same time.
i use a ps3 knockoff controller and sixaxis. it does the job, but probably would be better with a genuine controller.

Moga looked very promising in the beginning. After using though I would never try it again... It isn't worth your money. It isn't even worth free in my opinion...

I heard the same, that in of itself was the reason I never wanted to try it out.
Controllers
So, I've tried about 15 different controllers with my phone and for me, it's the PS3 Dualshock and a gameklip every time. With Jellybean supporting wireless controller profiles it's just the easiest thing out there. If you do go this route, I suggest the Dualshock controller specifically due to the slight added weight. With the gameklip the phone sits about 1/4" from the controller and with the regular sixaxis controller it feels a little top heavy after a while, whereas the slightly heavier Dualshock keeps that from happening.
Another tip with the gameklip (especially for you guys that already have one) if you get the gameklip you have the option of getting it with a case just for the klip... DON'T. It's crap... But, I've found a great solution! Get one of these vent mounts...

Then, just pop the mounting plate off and attach the gameklip to that. You phone just snaps in and out really easy and is very secure.
The only other controller I would recommend is the Nyko Playpad or Playpad Pro. Great battery life, comes with some cool accessories and a case. The only downside is that being as small as it is, long play sessions are less than comfortable.

I like the form factor of the small playpad to keep in my ride so i can play while my phones docked there. Not trying to really be caring a ps3 control cus honestly there to bulky for me, Small playpad seems easier to store in glovebox

Yea, Sixaxis AINEC imo. Nothing comes close to the accuracy and reliability it provides. Just root already and start rocking the PS3 controller
Well for the $35 dollar price tag with its locked down state is it worth it? I already have a PS3 for netflix (the Netflix app is better on there than on android) but I want a device to stream netflix when my PS3 is in use and also to stream Google music, but it doesn't do much else. I do hope it'll go places but I don't really see that happening. Of people who already own it, is it worth it?

I think so. I have a PS3 also but since I really only use it for blurays I found it annoying to have to update to watch Netflix. I also have a dedicated htpc. Its so convenient to fire up the app on your phone or tablet app and find something to stream then just send it to the TV. Plus I get better quality streaming to the chromecast than my htpc.

$35 can't go wrong. I bought two but might sell the other as I ended up not really using it (only one TV bought the second to move around with) just ease of use. especially for google music which i can simply turn on and start playing from my bed room to get music going.
I watch all my not so legally downloaded movies through chrome and I have good WiFi so it's a great buy for me... Quality is on par with direct hdmi and I can't be happier

Very worth it. I use it daily. A lot of streaming from my computer but also Netflix. I came from an apple TV and I have not looked back. Of course I do use my Xbox for things like HBO to go.

I have 2 Chromecast units. I think the jury is still out on whether they are worth $35. When the SDK is final, there is great potential for a powerful and flexible device that really opens up integration between TV and Android. Based on Google's behavior so far (whitelist and updates to kill work arounds), I'm concerned that the final product will be so locked down as to only be good for streaming a few paid services (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu +, etc.) and some token Chrome browser integration. We have to wait and see what Google does. We have to wait and see if they device allows creative app development, flexibility in streaming (local media from PC, dropbox, etc.). I have no question that the hardware has huge potential, but if Google neuters the device, and keeps tight control on what apps can use it, I don't think it will be worth $35. I also think that if they neuter this device, they will have an awfully hard time convincing consumers to buy Google multimedia devices in the future.
I'd say wait and see if Google is smart enough to realize how important it is to open up access and encourage broad development or if they are dumb enough to cater only to the big money streamers and leave Chromecast to wither on the vine.
I have one and don't use it. Having to go get a phone or tablet to start streaming is a huge turn off. Honestly, these are targeted at single people living in apartments...nothing wrong with that, but that's what it is. No Ethernet, no on-screen ui, etc. just doesn't work as well as it could in a house with kids. I don't carry my phone around with me in the house, and my tablet is often in the study. My kids' tablets are wherever the left them, lol. I just want to pick up my remote and watch the next episode of Top Gear. My kids the same, but maybe the next episode of Ben 10 or something. Just doesn't fit our lifestyle as well as an Apple TV or Roku. Sitting around watching YouTube videos is just not something a 40 something dad does.

Between the time I ordered it, and the time it arrived, Google disabled the apps which provided the only functionality I desired from the hardware. I would have been better off with a roku.
I usually do not buy a device and then wait to see if it will ever grow into the device I want.

I am watching both and I am over 40. YouTube is more then stupid kids doing stupid stuff but it is impossible to find videos with the on screen GUI from the TV or DVD Player.
More and More shows have follow up videos that are not broadcasted. With Cast I can remote into my desktop and play the video on the TV.
The main reason I got the ChromeCast is because Google is behind it. They are not going to stop at Netflix and YouTube

This is what I was thinking, even if it never becomes the device I want it to be, it is a $35 device that I can take and use on most TVs with super ease! $35 is almost nothing, I've spent more on other forms of entertainment that wasn't very good! I do, however, really really hope to see Pandora support on it, maybe Spotify too, then I might actually use that service.

same here I ordered mine prior to the whitelist thing, and it just arrived today and noticed that all the 3rd party apps is locked out... totally blows

It is not a mirroring device. It allows you to stream content from supported services, using your device as a remote control. In other words... if you send a YouTube or Netflix video to it from your handset, the ChromeCast actually connects to YouTube or Netflix and starts streaming.

If you already have some equivalent of a home theater PC, a Chromecast is a little redundant.
I love mine, though - it basically gives me a HTPC in a tiny, low power device that I can unplug and take with me traveling.
It appears that Google has put some hooks into Android 4.4.2 that may support screen mirroring in the future, though.
Actually it can mirror the chrome browser on the PC or Mac. I will assume HBO go has an app coming and plex is semi supported (will be fully in a month or two I'd guess)

ahhh. I am getting my chromecast in a few weeks, just haven't gotten any apps for it yet. glad HBOgo is supported now!
I have one and barely use it but it is pretty cool, kinda a novelty. Say someone is telling you about something on youtube and you are by your tv and want everyone in the room to see it, just cast it to the tv and there it is.
I have one but I really didn't use it that much because it lacked the ability to cast local data. Now that it can it has much more purpose. Android mirroring is in the works from what I've read which is pretty cool.
I tried to explain a chromecast to someone and said it's similar to a wireless HDMI cable. It's perfect for me since I can take it to work and do training in one big swoop as opposed to having my shift sit down at a computer one at a time and hope they actually do what I told them to do.
I use it almost daily, stream my hbo go, and comcast, hulu and other things to it. There is rumor that it will we getting device mirroring in the near future as someone found some code relating to it in 4.4 kit kat.
I just got one a few days ago, after the Plex update, since I needed it for media center streaming.

I have a Chromecast that I use on the small TV in my bedroom. I like it better than the Roku I used to have in there, and it's more useful (Roku, as far as I know, won't stream Google Music, and I use my TV as my speakers in the bedroom). I recently downloaded Real Cloud, because I think you can cast videos from any of your devices with the app on it - so I want to see if I can install the app on my laptop where I have some movies and cast them to the TV using the Android app.

It works way better than PS3 for streaming services and uses a very small amount of power. PS3 is a waste of energy for netflix and what not.
I haven't found any other way to stream Google Play Music All Access (without plugging in), and it's actually pretty great for that purpose alone. Play/Pause, Prev/Next, and volume control, all wirelessly from the phone.
I actually just picked up a second one since I had a $25 credit at Amazon, and they are selling them for $32 with free 2nd day shipping with Prime. Cost me $7 out the door, and landed on my porch 2 days later.

being a parent, having netflix is awesome. and, since we watch zero adult programming, hulu is awesome too. so i have 4 as it works as a perfect replacement for a PS3/HTPC, etc solution - especially where you can't have one of those devices (or multiple devices).
i just disconnected my htpc from the main TV because support on a few items were starting to get scarce. i have my Cc plugged in now instead. the only drawback is its less convenient to stream media from my local drive. i wish there was an easy solution. Real Cloud makes it sound liek you have to upload the media first.

I just use WiFi Direct on my phone and it 'flick' over a YouTube video and it works great. I guess the Chromecast is for people without a Smart TV?

I think you can stream from any device that has the app installed on it. I'm going to install the app on my computer tonight and see if that's the case, or if I have to upload.
Sorry, I'm an idiot. Not only are we not supposed to request apps I just realized that I can pull the apk from my note 3. Sorry for not reading the guidelines first. Won't happen again!
I'm pretty sure that app was sunset...I'm using Peel Smart Remote.

Watch on was replaced by peel smart remote completely. In earlier versions that where included with the phones it was a custom Samsung branded version that was just called smart remote but later updated it to peel smart remote which is the same thing found in the play store. In other words, peel smart remote in the play store is essentially the successor of smart remote and watch on.
